This educational non-fiction book from Lerner comes from their Lightening Bolt Books imprint which provides beginning reader books for ages 6-9. This title is one title of eight in a series about natural disasters.
In four short chapters with easy to read paragraphs, children will learn what droughts are, how they begin, when they become dangerous, and how to stay safe during one. Bonus material includes a true drought story, a glossary, a list of additional resources and a page of facts. Content aides include a table of contents and an index. This book would be a good choice for students looking for an informational book on a weather topic.
The illustrations are full color photographs of which many are full page with the text over-laid to make maximum use of the space. Others are presented in box format that take up a little less than half the page. Visually, it is appealing to the intended audience and the use of text bubbles with arrows help give context to the text.
I would recommend this book for purchase by any school or public library. This book was provided by the publisher for professional review by SWON Libraries.
Dangerous Droughts is a nonfiction trade book perfect for children ages 6-10. As an elementary librarian, I find that students in this age range are fascinated by natural disasters and any kid of extreme weather. This book is filled with very clear, easy to follow text features such as table of contents, captions, maps, index, and glossary. The information presented is not alarming and is just dangerous enough to captivate young children without instilling fear. I am always on the hunt for new informational trade books for my younger readers and can't wait to add this to our shelves!
