In December of 2014, Lisa Ann announced her retirement from the adult entertainment industry. She released her first book, The Life, in December of 2015.
On New Year’s Eve, she received a phone call threatening her life—a call that came from inside her own home.
For Lisa Ann, this was only the beginning of a terrifying year that would spiral completely out of control. In public, she was still entertaining her fans and maintaining her persona on her wildly popular Fantasy Sports Radio shows. In private, she descended through layer after layer of depression, isolation, fear, and darkness.
But the more her life contracted physically—as she retreated into the small, quiet places where she could feel safe—the more her mind began to open. The force to be still created a silence that gave her room to listen. Room to learn. Room to change.
And the chance to break free.
The Life Back chronicles her three-year odyssey through terror, chaos, forgiveness—and becoming unstoppable.
Was gifted this book as a joke. Very poorly written and boring (blaming the ghostwriter here).
Only a couple interesting moments, one of them being the relationship and struggle she had with her family. All the parts where she talks about her finances, new-found minimalism, and trivial drama felt like filler. Giving it a 2nd star due to the few genuine moments within it. With a better ghostwriter, this could have been a 3-star book. Maybe.
I read Lisa Ann’s first book both out of curiosity and the fantasy football connection and it was fine. I noticed this book on Spotify’s new audiobook offering so listened to it over a few flights. It’s pretty bad. I don’t want to minimize the trauma she talks about (and didn’t include in her first book) or the harassment she apparently got from many in the adult community, but (and perhaps this is because I listened to HER reading it) she just seems like a LOT. She often sounds very impressed with her successes (and, I’ll add, she’s quite good at her job) and probably someone who needs a lot of people telling her how great she is. The writing itself isn’t good and in reality she’s not telling a very long story - more like an explanation of how and why she returned to being an adult film actress. I’m glad I didn’t pay for it, and wish her all the successes, but this was fairly skippable.
The first half of this book is brutal to get through. I made the mistake of picking up the second book instead of the first, so I may have missed context.
My problem with the author is her detailing the grief of going through lawsuits while not wanting to give her plaintiffs the satisfaction of taking up real estate in the book. It left me with questions like: who is this even about and why is this happening? Not necessarily a feeling you want to leave your reader with.
Because I didn’t understand the problem in full detail, it was hard to care about the journey and redemption arc. It wasn’t until the author ironically returned to the adult industry that had scorned her that the book started to turn around. Still, it felt like more of a journal for the author than a story for the reader. You could probably find something more interesting to read.
This was a really good book. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of hers or if you’ve read her first book. There are some spelling errors but nothing to really take away from the experience.
This woman has overcome a lot. Alienation ridicule and just plain hate. But with a new attitude, beauty, and grace, she carved out a new life for herself and she has come out on top.
