this was a fast paced read and the world building was incredible! but, having to wait through the slow burn of two books for only one scene at the end sucked since there was no romance. I found the character development to have improved. astrid is getting more confident and castiel is changing his old ways.

can’t wait for the third book and see how the story progresses!!

Disclaimer: spoilers below. I loved this book so much:D
Low key the first half made me feel like I’m waiting too long for the Castiel’s appearance, but it was well worth it when he showed up and almost ran to her before realizing she came with the enemy (and then both guys fought 🥵)
I loved the building plot and twists, and the banter between all three lmao. Also obsessed with the fact that the one bed trope is for both the guys that hate each other
Tropes: jealousy, guy falls first, both guys fight over her, court intrigue,

This was a tough journey for Castiel and Astrid. It was as much about finding the means to stop the enemy as it was winning a more personal battlefield. Astrid is taken captive, and Castiel can do nothing to stop it. As Asteria slowly withers away, Astrid finds her world isn’t what it seems. From her capturer to even what she believes about herself comes into question, and it shakes her to the core. All of what she has managed to do, she dismisses it and only dwells on what she perceives as her weaknesses. Then she reminds herself that’s she’s more than the sum of her now shackled magic and wrestles again with the inner battlefield that grips her.

And then there’s Castiel. He’s desperately trying to find a way to get back to her because he has always seen her strength and so much more. All he has ever wanted was to find a way to tell her, rather than direct his own pain at her in countless horrible ways. Finally, he had glimpsed hope of that possibility. For her, he had started to pull down the walls he had built around him and show her the true person that always existed. And to his credit, Castiel does give it his all on that front. Yet Astrid has put up her own walls. She can’t let go of the past hurts inflicted by Castiel over the years. For a moment, she allows a crack in her wall of hate when Castiel shows her the Castiel that’s always cared for her. Yet in an instant, she seals up the crack because their venomous history rears its ugly head. Even worse, she throws fiery darts of fury at him, calling up the wounds again for both of them. In her heart, she doesn’t want to keep doing that, but rather embrace the Castiel who vows this to her, “You had a part of me that no one else did. That no one else ever will. That part of me is yours. It always has been, and it always will be. I’ll support you. I’ll be your biggest advocate. If it means I can stay at your side, I’ll do whatever it takes.”

And to defeat the true enemy and save Asteria, that’s what it will take. Castiel and Astrid must put the wounds of the past behind them and fight as one.

Book Two of the series picks right up after book one, continuing the scene where Astrid lost the challenge to Ryken. Astrid must try to adjust to her new life in the Dark Court, while plotting her escape and trying to save Asteria from Valerius.

If you have read A Twist of Night and Day, I highly recommend doing so before diving into this book. You'll find things make a lot more sense, and you'll see connections quicker.

Book Two was a lot more developed than book one. The plot was fast paced, but you weren't missing parts of the story. We get to learn more about this world and gain more insight into how magic works. Astrid has evolved significantly from book one and really grew into herself throughout this book. Ryken is a character I was on the fence about. He's incredibly annoying, but as you learn more about him and his family, he doesn't seem as bad.

There were some plot points that didn't make sense, and even though they were minor, it still made stop and say "well that doesn't seem right". But overall, the book was great and the overall plot was fun and adventurous.

A fast paced read with incredible world building and an exciting storyline that keeps you glued to your seat. Astrid is continuing to find her way and becoming more confident as the story progresses. Ryken is intriguing and Castiel is changing, which is for the better and their journey is fantastic. A fantastic adventure that I hope to continue on!

The first book was slightly better but I loved the intro to the new characters and the dynamics with another villain who isn't a villain. Would have loved more tension here though.

Rating: 3.5/5 Stars**

Synopsis: This story begins where the last one ends, with Astrid losing the Challenge battle with Ryken in her attempt to win back the Day Court for Castiel. This sequel follows Astrid as she tries to adapt to her new circumstances living with the Dark Court and plan her escape and eventual plot to protect Asteria from Valerius. We learn more about the history and politics of Asteria, including Astrid herself, along with learning about what the dark fae siblings truly seek by taking over another court.

Review/Thoughts: This book was an enjoyable sequel in the Asteria Chronicles series. Dare I say I enjoyed it more than the first. Part of that could be because what I wanted from the first was more development, and that was done in a much better way in this book. I still think there could be more, but I found this one to be an improvement from the first. With time and more experience in writing, I think Aubrey will get better at this.

First, we see more development of the world and plot in this story. It's clearer to see and understand the selfishness of the faeries, which helps explain some things from the first book. This also helps to set Astrid apart as different from normal faeries as she shows more empathy to others, even to those she considers her enemy. This happens through Astrid getting to know those in the Dark Court and comparing their lives with how she grew up. It's a great way to develop the background for the courts without just her telling the reader by breaking the fourth wall. It's more of an internal monologue she has while learning about the Dark Court.

I found the character development to have improved here too. I enjoyed the portion with Ryken and Astrid and seeing them form their bond, trading healing with questions. They had great banter that was fun to read. This was also a great way to teach us about the Dark Court and their history and people, without just being straight up told like we got in the first book. This also was a fun way to create a little bit of a love triangle, although it was not equilateral as we definitely saw one of those relationships as much more of a reality to happen. The development of relationships really shone in the book and was one of my favorite parts of it. Also, waiting through the slow burn of the first two books for that moment near the end?! What a way to get the Vorukael to appear!

We also saw a lot of personal growth for Astrid. We begin the book with her magic being suppressed, and soon come to find that her magic has changed. She spends the book learning more about herself and embracing who she truly is, including realizations about her heritage. I loved the exploration Astrid has in finding out what this revelation means for her and doing what she can to process it. We see her come to terms and accept herself and see her kindness and empathy as strengths and not weaknesses.

It's still hard to compare the story to ACOTAR, and I think a bit unfair to do so. She is a new author, so comparing to these fully developed series I think just can't happen right now. However, when comparing and viewing this as an indie, self-published work, I think it's good. **I gave this book 3.5 stars because I do really think it was an improvement from the first and was an enjoyable book. I found this book to be better developed and with less inconsistencies than the first. The writing and story telling was well done. It still needs work to compare to anything of ACOTAR caliber. There were some questions still and parts that could have been given more detail, but as a new author, I would rate it well.

Again, this book is short and easy to get through. I'm thoroughly excited to keep an eye on this author and read the next in the series along with seeing what she comes up with in the future. I think with some more writing and experience, she's could put out some excellent works.

Also. I forgot to mention with the first review, but I LOVE Rowan. I need one of him in my life.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow (free on KU)
Would I reread: Yes, I would love to see this series “refreshed” by Aubrey in the future. I would reread this series if/when it has more development to see what has changed and what more we learn about Asteria.
Would I recommend: Aubrey has talent in writing and is a new author, which admittedly shows in her writing. However, if you like to support new, independent authors, I suggest checking out her books. They're short, and while this leaves me wanting more detail, they are easy to read through in a matter of hours.

This is the second in a series I read to prepare for an ARC copy of the third. I was pretty excited to read this one after the cliffhanger at the end of A Twist of Night and Day. I enjoyed this one, too! The characters are a little immature and predictable, but it is a YA novel, which I’m out of the habit of reading. I kept thinking I knew where the plot was going and being annoyed about it, then it continuously went somewhere I never imagined. I really enjoyed that.

Astrid finds herself a prisoner of the Dark Faeries in the Day Court after losing the Challenge to Ryken. He claims to love her and is waiting for her to return his affection. Ryken and his sister, Euphelia, put magic cuffs on Astrid’s wrist that keep her from leaving the Day Court or accessing her magic. Astrid tries to escape to no avail.

One day, while walking the grounds, Ryken walks out of the Other Realm right in front of Astrid. She sees him bloodied and exhausted, and decides this is her chance at a long con to win her freedom. Astrid agrees to heal him on the condition he allows her to use her magic for the process. Left with no other choice and a desire to win Astrid’s hand, Ryken agrees.

With their new found agreement, Ryken begins to tell Astrid about his life. He is battling, Valerius, who is very dangerous and evil. He and his sister can’t kill him because his life is somehow tied to theirs. He needs to be sealed in something to protect the world and the siblings from him.

This begins a series of events where Ryken begins to see Astrid for who she really is and Astrid to realize Ryken isn’t as evil as she thought. Wanting to please Astrid, Ryken agrees to another fight, telling Astrid if she wins, she may go free.

What happens from here is an engaging story of enemies to friends to allies, a fight against a greater evil, and twisty revelations. I appreciate how unpredictable the plot is. I kept thinking we were going one way, then something unexpected came out of nowhere. If you enjoy YA, fantasy, and very light G rated romance, I think you’ll enjoy this one.

I was incredibly surprised by how good this was. As mentioned in the review of the first book, there are a few points where it’s obvious that she is a new writer. I wouldn’t write that again about this book because it’s beautifully polished. Having the privilege to read a draft version prior to this final version, I was also amazed by how much she has honed her craft and is able to make a great change in our understandings of character depth without adding thousands of words in.

The first book is an easy read with a fast paced plot, and this carries onto this book as well. However, this book also tackles so many more things without making it overly preachy. For example, I mentioned that the romance set up was abusers-to-lovers. In this book, Winters takes this head on and shows the non-linear healing process of forgiving your bullies. I also love the non-linear process of realising something about yourself that challenges how you view yourself. Another aspect that she begins to cover in this book that I expect to extend into the last book is the idea of reclaiming lost culture. As in the first book, she also touches on mental health problems. She weaves these ideas into her book without detracting from her plot—these are points that, when solved, push the plot further forward.

Another cliff hanger of an ending and obviously my withdrawals have IMMEDIATELY kicked in.

I struggled initially with the 180 from Ryken- I do think that if I hadn’t already been all Team Castiel he could have been a contender. The books are so fast-paced that I can’t feel the feels for him yet. But I think there’s potential for him. I’m just firmly on the blonde prince. Don’t get me started on their first kiss. FINALLY.

Was not expecting the twist for Astrid’s court but it all makes SENSE. Aubrey again has woven the story so that it all has been building up to the reveal. When you look back you can see all the hints that were embedded through the storyline. Where did her mother even get her? Related to someone in the Lunar Court? Part of the attack? Just passing by, like? QUESTIONS.

I love the Elder fae. Think they’re so interesting like- I always want more from Freyin and the Vorukael (who gives off Suriel vibes and y’know I love him)

I know it’s all gearing up to the big bad fight and I really want it to FEEL big. We’ve only gotten glimpses so far of his power.

Just need to throw myself into book three to get all the answers I need. To quote Castiel:
“There are some things we have yet to speak about.”

This bite sized sequel was a surprising improvement over the first.

Astrid has lost the Challenge, freed a mysterious faerie from within the Forescua Serpent, and has been defeated by the dark faerie Ryken in combat. Even worse, he wants to marry her.

Now Ryken’s magic bound prisoner in the crumbling Day Court, Astrid is desperate to find a way to escape and reunite with Castiel and Rowan, or succumb to Stockholm syndrome. Not all is as it seems with the exiled dark faeries, or with Astrid herself.

Astrid, while still a rigid character, has shown more depth in this sequel. The pacing and voice are more fleshed out, a closer inspection of some different faces and prying off Ryken’s mask refreshed the plot enough to be interested in the outcome.

I feel almost sorry to say that I kind of prefer Ryken over Castiel. I feel like he has more of a reason to behave the way he does, and he doesn’t see that other options exist until they are pointed out. Castiel knew better and made a choice to be a crappy person, he comes across as petulant and the only thing going for him in my books is Rowan.

All in all, I am enthused to see so much growth in this installment, it’s not often that I like a sequel or middle book more than the first!

Thank you to the author, Aubrey Winters, for providing a copy of A Curse of Sun and Moon (Asteria Chronicles book 2). I have reviewed honestly.

A Curse of Sun and Moon features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
○ YA fantasy
○ Fae
○ Faerie realms
○ Cruel princes
○ Enemies to lovers
○ Curses
○ Magic

My overall rating for A Curse of Sun and Moon is…

3.5 Stars!

The second chapter in the magically rich Asteria Chronicles was an unexpectedly delightful read. Our kickass MC, Astrid, is back with new complications and revelations. We don't travel as much in this instalment, which is slightly disappointing as the world building in book one took my breath away, but the plot was more strongly character driven which definitely balanced the tale out. Unfortunately, the big reveal at the end was disappointing as I guessed it during the book, however it was from subtle hints so I don't think everyone will come to the realisation so soon. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but it didn't feel as enrapturing as A Twist of Night and Day.

3.5/5
A short and sweet continuation of the Asteria Chronicles.

The book while enjoyable felt bland, there were no big twists or surprising and original plot points that caught my attention. Parts felt rushed however that could just be that it’s a smaller book, better to read when you need something quick to get through.

Character wise I normally dislike first person however Astrid is aware of the things around her and not oblivious and stupid. Her feelings however towards the two love interests does annoy me *slight spoilers* especially Cassian, I think he’s a bum head and I hate watching her get attached to him. Ryken on the other hand is my baby and precious and I feel nothing but love for him and I hope in the end Astrid does too.

Astrid also coming to realise that caring isn’t weakness felt slightly forced however the message is important and I’m very glad it was written in.

The end leaves lots of room for the third novel to have completely original ideas which I cannot wait to see what Aubrey does with their world.

I really enjoyed this second book a lot better than the first. I think the relationships could have been fleshed out just a little bit more, but there was already more in this one than in book one. Same with the worldbuilding. This book definitely found Astrid trying to discover herself, as well as her surrounding world. She realizes how little she truly knows and she's trying to learn more now. This still had a lot of Cruel Prince vibes, but they were no longer as prominent as they were before. I actually felt some Red Queen vibes in the beginning, but it was not overwhelming. In fact, I thought it was interesting. Ryken was an interesting character. I started to like him, and even felt sorry for him at some points, but I can't fully trust him yet. I haven't decided how I really feel about him and his story, especially regarding his siblings. I'm sure there's more at play there. I really enjoyed seeing Castiel and Astrid trying to overcome their pasts together. I'm rooting for them. I look forward to the next book!

Astrid, now a prisoner of the Dark Fae, must discover how to regain her freedom. She also must find out more about the poison that’s affecting her magic, and figure out a way to stop thinking about Castiel, the golden haired Prince of Day.

Okay, so this was a really good second book!!! I was really impressed with how much action there was in this one. It was fast paced for sure, but that doesn’t take away from how good it was!!! I also absolutely adored Castiel in this one, although at times I felt extremely sorry for him. I hope he and Astrid can explore what is building between them more in the third book!!!

Astrid is going through so much, and she discovers things about herself and her magic that I never would’ve expected. I loved how she’s slowly starting to work through her fears and self doubt. I’m excited to see how Winters continues her journey in the third installment of this series. I personally cannot wait to read it!!!

Really enjoyed the book. First, let me just say that I am team Castiel. I disagree with my sister, I like him and I like them together. Saying that, I like that it’s not instant for Astrid and that she is now standing up for herself against him and making sure that he knows she’s not okay with their past and not sure when she will be able to forgive him.
I like that the whole “kindness” thing is different. Most books you read being kind is considered weak. Female characters are not strong if they’re kind. Astrid believed this but now she’s accepting that it’s who she is and that it makes her strong. I just really like the different outlook on that.
I’d also like to add that the authors details of the fights really help me enjoy the book. I don’t like when a book gets a fight scene done in a couple sentences. It doesn’t seem like a big deal then. With this series it’s there and it helps us see that Astrid is actually badass other than people just saying she is.

This was such a good follow up to book one!
Astrid is really coming into her own, she's learning to accept herself the way she is, because there actually is nothing wrong with the way she is and that's amazing!
I'm glad Castiel is changing for the better, no longer a tormentor, but I can't get on board with their relationship. While I think they'd be great friends and maybe there is some attraction there, I feel like it's being forced upon me and the characters themselves.
While we've see little of Ryken, maybe it's the darkness or that he's a lost soul in need of help, but I would love more from him... whether it's in book three, a spin off, or a prequel.

I feel like the action/battle scenes are described in great detail and the authors world building has developed.

I've enjoyed the adventure and cannot wait to see where we go from here.

I was so excited to immediately pick this one up after A Twist of Night and Day!
Astrid is looking to break from after her Challenge went wrong. Desperate for the chance to escape, she takes whatever opportunities she can to leave the crumbling Day Court. Now free, she finds herself on a deeper quest to unlock hidden movements within Asteria.
In book one we got a lot of background into Castiel, so it was great to get some insight into Astrid here. Loved learning more about the history of Asteria as well!
I definitely cannot wait to get my hands on book three because I need to know how the story ends and if Astrid and Castiel can pull off the end of this quest!
This book wasn’t as fast-paced as the first one, but I do feel like we got a lot more in depth looks at parts of characters and places that we glimpsed in book one.

This book was all I wanted in a sequel!! Started out with a hilarious refusal towards Ryken's proposal to the interesting dynamics between Astrid and Ryken throughout and eventually getting back to Castiel was such a ride. And lemme say, for sure the romance picked up in this book. Though I did end up getting some second lead syndrome with Ryken.
I think Astrid's reluctance towards Castiel due to the fifty years of torment was well done as it didn't show her just forgiving him out of nowhere and forgetting the past.
The fast paced speed of the book along with easy to absorb writing made reading the book a breeze. I read it all in basically one sitting.
Anyway, can't wait to read book 3 when it comes out! Will be waiting until then 💙

A curse of sun and moon picks up right where the first book leaves off. I definitely recommend rereading the first book before jumping into this sequel. Overall I really enjoyed this sequel, probably even more than the first.

This book has enjoyable character, fun banter, and is super quick paced. I didn’t even realize I was at the end until I got there because I wanted to see where the story continues.

Overall I did enjoy the story. I think the writing style was much better which made the characters so much more likable. I really enjoyed learning about the dark fairies and their past and enjoyed the small banter between astrid and ryken.

of course rowan was as amazing as always.

anyways I can’t wait until book three!

Ahhhhh I read this book in literally one day. I just couldn’t put it down!

Our FMC Astrid is in a complicated situation, and we have two shockingly alluring MMCs and sometimes our real new enemy is winning me over pretty hard

Highly reccomend this series. World building is great. Character development is good. I genuinely feel for all of these characters and by the middle of this book Ryken really has me. I have to know how this story ends!

This book, too, surprised me. It’s not predictable. There are fresh and new interesting twists and turns that have you getting excited and gritting your teeth. You just don’t know what to expect and sometimes you don’t know who is your enemy anymore.

🖤🖤 read it

What a phenomenal book. I bought this book after reading the first one and I was thrilled. I enjoyed this one immensely. Astrid learns secrets that make her question things. She realizes her care, her sweet nature is not her weakness but her strength. After being held captive by Rayken she tries to learn things that'll help her escape but eventually, as the things happen she ends up deciding to save him. How did that happen? I don't wanna spoil it much but I enjoyed it. The fights as always were written so flawlessly. I gotta learn that. But to be honest not a single part of this book had a dull moment. The third book awaits me. So I am just gonna head to that. Lovely book and I wanna recommend this to everyone.

Great Sequel! So Ready For The Next Book In This Series!

I'm excited that Astrid FINALLY accepted herself as she is. That she acknowledged what she once thought of weaknesses in herself aren't that at all, but rather, they're strengths. Also, I'm here for the changes in Castiel and the grudging respect... And more... that he's given to Astrid. I actually like the two of them together. I'm also thrilled in knowing my suspicious with Astrid were correct. Although, I'll admit: Totally didn't see coming all that Val ended up being, nor the implications for the rest of Alsteria. I'm definitely looking forward to the third book though!

A Curse of Sun and Moon is the second book in the Asteria chronicles and after that cliffhanger ending in book one, I was so ready for this one!!
This book picks up right where A Twist of Night and Day left off, and I was pretty excited that we got to see more of Ryken in this one! I’m really loving his character and enjoyed learning more about him and his story.
I didn’t really feel like this book had quite as much action and adventure as the previous book did, but Astrid did have a lot more self-discovery in this one which I think is going to lead to a very exciting book 3!
This book left off on a bit of a cliffhanger as well, and I’m excited to find out what’s going to happen next!

I sort of enjoyed this but it was very slow. Astrid has her magic shackled by Ryken and is held prisoner. This part was very dragged out for me. It livens up when Castiel appears finally and she meet up with her sisters again. They decide to go on another quest to find the Lunar Court fairies. The characters of Astrid and Castiel haven't captured my imagination at all as their chemistry is absolutely nil. Maybe in the third book she finally falls for him which will be totally unrealistic after how obnoxious he's been to her in the past. Unfortunately I am at the point where I don't care what happens next so I wont be continuing with this story.

This book picks up right where book one leaves it.

With that being said, this book starts off rather slow for me. There is not too much happening or new information being added. I was let wondering where Castiel was for about 2/3 of the book. It does pick up in the middle and there is a bit more action.
Honestly it felt like a typical second in a series. The first is action packed and draws you in and the second just holds you in place until you get to the third. With that being said, it was a good read and I am looking forward to seeing where the third book takes us.

Lots of twists and turns. The biggest reveal I felt in my soul was coming and was thrilled it was true! Also the empowerment that Aubrey has given Astrid is divine! I love that she discovers her weakness isn’t a weakness at all and is actually her biggest strength. I feel more people could learn from that! I cannot wait to see our girl finish the fight in book three! I’m also excited to see where the love interest will go. I would be most pleased with her somehow not having to choose and keeping them both! But time will tell. Excited to finish the series soon!

Thank you to the author for sending me this copy. The following review represents my honest opinion.

I find it hard to find sequels that live up to the first book after reading such a fantastic five star read but a curse of sun and moon definitely lived up to my expectations! The characters experienced so much more development and their interpersonal relationships were so fun to read. I am very excited to read the third book and see how the magic continues to play a very large role (and how the plot twist pans out, of course)!

Book two in this series picks right back up where the first one ended. This fast-paced read features incredible world-building and an exciting storyline that keeps you glued to your seat. For the second time I could not put it down until I was done. Astrid's journey of self-discovery and growing confidence is captivating. Ryken's intriguing presence and Castiel's positive transformation add depth to the story, making their journey a fantastic adventure. I am ready to jump right into book three!

A wonderful follow-up to book one. I do wish there had been a little more development, although Astrid does make leaps and bounds upon a revelation that would be a spoiler here.
I loved Ryken and I hope we see more of him in book two.
The reason for the loss of a star is Castiel was basically a punching bag for Astrid in this book and I wish he'd stood up for himself even a little.
