I can tell when you’re lying. Every. Single. Time.
I’m Jinx. As a private investigator, being a walking, talking lie detector is a useful skill – but let’s face it, it’s not normal. You’d think it would make my job way too easy, but even with my weird skills, I still haven’t been able to track down my parent’s killers.
When I’m hired to find a missing university student, I hope to find her propped up at a bar – yet my gut tells me there’s more to this case than a party girl gone wild. Firstly, she’s a bookish soul who’s as likely to go off the rails as Mother Theresa. Secondly, I’m not the only one on her trail; she’s also being tracked by the implacable and oh-so-sexy Inspector Stone.
Stone and I team up, and he shoves me into a realm where magic is real – a place where there are vampyrs and werewolves, dragons and trolls. And where my skills are more than just detecting lies…
Oh, and my dog? He’s a freaking hellhound who can manipulate the magical realms themselves.
I need to find the girl.
I need to discover who killed my parents.
And I need to find out more about the attractive but mysterious Zachary Stone…
The complete box set of the Other Realm Series contains the following books:- Glimmer of Dragons (A prequel novella) Glimmer of The Other Glimmer of Hope Glimmer of Death Glimmer of Deception
Following are reviews for each of the individual books. Glimmer of the Other an Urban Fantasy series that follows the life of Jessica ‘Jinx’ Sharp, a 25yr old P.I. with the ability to tell when others are telling the truth or not. She is quite literally a walking lie detector. Kind of useful in her line of work. She has been a P.I. for some years, not only as a job, but also so she can try and find out what happened to her parents, who were brutally murdered when she was only 18. When hired to find a missing University Student, Hester Sorrel, Jinx initially figures this should be pretty easy, find the girl in a bar, discovering the fun of alcohol. But things are never that easy right? When she finds out there is another investigator on the case, Zachary Stone, who whilst she decides is gorgeous, she doesn’t need the competition. However, as she and Stone are exchanging information, she gets more than she bargained for. Stone tells her that she is a ‘Truth Seeker’, this is why she is a walking lie detector. Then he takes it one step further, and introduces her to ‘The Other Realm’, a kind of mirror dimension that sits alongside our own. Except in ‘The Other’ there is magic. The Other is linked to “The Common” realm (where us normal people live!), and so moving stuff in the Other, moves things in the Common as well. But Magic can only be cast in the Other, even though it can impact those in either realm. Those that are part of the Other are marked with a triangle on their foreheads. Although Magical Creatures exist within the Other, and do not have runes on their foreheads. There is an intricate World-Building system, that whilst complex, is easy to follow, and Harris has created this stunning world with Witches, Vampyrs, Wizards, Elves, Dragons, Elementals and many more magical creatures. She has paid homage to many of the classic tropes of these creatures, but also made them her own in other ways. It is here that Jinx discovers that she is a Wizard, and one that has the rare ability of Truth Seeker, something that is incredibly rate in the Other realm. Glimmer of the Other is such a fun filled Urban Fantasy story, with an edge of Romance as well. There is so much that happens within this story as we are initially introduced to Jinx’s life, her P.I. business, her best friend Lucy, and her dog Gato. The story is multi-faceted, with some aspects focusing on Jinx’s new discovery of the Other, whilst other aspects of the story focus on her investigation of the missing girl Hester, added by the implacable Stone. It soon becomes apparent to, that Hester’s disappearance, and Stone’s involvement are all tied to the Other Realm. Harris is clever here, using the investigation and Jinx’s learning curve to explain all the different aspects of the ‘Other’ to readers, allowing us to learn at the same pace that Jinx does. The world-building is truly outstanding in this book, it is the depth of the character classes and the various twists and fun that Harris has had with them. It is the Other Realm itself. There is the magic system for the Wizards (known as the I.R.), then there are different magic items. There are so many really wonderful aspects to the world building, but I don’t want to give too much away. The other great thing about this book is the character work. There is a lot of detail in each of the characters, as with the world-building, it gives them a great depth, and realism. Jinx’s character is just brilliant as the main character, with a bit of sarcastic fire in her comments that leaves you laughing at some of the dialogue, at other times, a painful reminder of her past that pulls at the heartstrings. Her ability to tell the truth all the time is a fascinating gift, and Harris uses it well, telling us with ‘truth or lie’ comments after various character statements (including Jinx’s own comments – she is not immune to her own ability which makes for some intriguing self-reflection). It allows us to know what Jinx is thinking, and although we don’t know what is going on in the other persons head, we know when they are trying to deceive Jinx. There are some other really wonderful characters (and I am not going to go into all of them – I don’t want to give away spoilers!!), but Gato, Jinx’s dog is just awesome. Gato is not a normal dog (as will be explained in the book), and he is easily one of the best characters in this series. Lucy is the perfect friend. This is one of those books that really grabs you, it has such wonderful characters, and you find that you get attached to them so quickly. Harris has an easy writing style, the 1st person character flow works really well for Jinx, with her Truth Seeker ability, and Harris uses it exceptionally well during the story. The subtle ‘truth’ or ‘lie’ as we are listening to others talk is fascinating and provides a unique insight into others. It is not just this though, Jinx has such a strong moral compass to do the right thing, and find the truth. It makes her a fascinating character in this series, as others react to her in different ways once they learn of her abilities. Glimmer of Hope has multiple different things happen, as Jinx starts to acclimate to her new life as being a ‘Truth Seeker’ and being able to live in two realms, the Other and the Common. At the start of this story, Jinx is approached by Joyce Evergreen, the Dryad she met in the Café in book 1 when she was first introduced to the Other. Joyce is very upset and wants to hire Jinx to find out who killed her husband, Reggie. He was allegedly killed in a robbery, but Joyce doesn’t think this is true and that it is a coverup. Looking at the crime scene photos, Jinx is shocked to see that the wounds on Reggie are almost identical to the ones on her parents. Jinx is working with Hester Sorrell now, the young woman from book 1 who was going to be sacrificed by Mrs Harding. Jinx now works in offices supplied by Lord Volderiss, a thank you for saving the life of his son Nate, who was also going to be sacrificed by Mrs Harding, and was mortally wounded by her. Jinx not only saved his life, but in the process, the two are now permanently blood bonded. They have a special empathic connection in which they can feel when the other is near, and the emotional state of the other, which is both good and bad. It is great when one or the other is in danger, as they can help each other. Not so good when getting intimate though, as it can be a be a bit ‘TMI’!! Jinx begins to investigate Reggie’s death, and discovers that he wasn’t the nice accountant his wife thought, but instead, was working for a drug cartel, creating a new drug for those of the Other Realm called Boost. However, Boost is dangerous, it can give you a serious high (and ‘Boost’ your abilities, thus the name), or it can simply kill you. When a new victim is found, Jinx finds she has a new partner. The new victim was a Dragon, and her new partner, is the King of all the Dragons in their local Realm. Emory, has decided he needs to be a part of the case to find out what is happening, as the Boost deaths are only targeting ‘Magical Creatures’. Along with Emory, Jinx also has assistance from Agent Stone. Initially, Jinx is not sure about Emory, but it is interesting watching their relationship unfold in book 2, as Jinx learns that there is a lot more to Emory than what she originally assumed. It doesn’t hurt that in his human form he is so gorgeous that ‘it makes her teeth hurt’. This is a multi-faceted story that is fast-paced, action-packed, intriguing, but most of all, just great fun. Harris writes in a first-person style so we see everything from Jinx’s point of view. There is so much realism and authenticity in the character, you can instantly connect with Jinx she is so real, with this determined outlook on life, a very quick wit and sense of sarcasm that adds this hilarious aspect to the story (even at the most inappropriate times!). She has a gritty strength about her, as well as being clever in how she uses her ‘Other Realm’ abilities in ways that no one else has really considered before. There are so many other wonderful characters as well, Hes, Nate, Lucy, Gato, Stone and now Emory. There are several more as well I won’t give spoilers for. Each are just outstanding, written so well, creating these stunning characters you get so engaged with. The really extraordinary thing about this series though is the world-building. The Other Realm is in a word ‘Magical’, with its altered colour scheme, ability to enhance magic, but most importantly, this is where the magical creatures are, and no one has to hide their true self. You know a person from the Other Realm by the marks on their forehead, 1 Triangle for the Other Realm, 2 means they work for the connection, and 3 means that person can use or has access to the third realm (where you can move through time). The world building is just beautiful, and adds this incredible depth and detail to the story, making it something really special. This book, (this series!), is a multi-faceted thrill ride not to be missed. Glimmer of Death sees Jinx devastated to learn that Lucy, her best friend in the whole world, is dying. Lucy has been the victim of an ‘Incubus’ attack. Her boyfriend, James, was an Incubus, and has been slowing leeching the life out of her, in breach of the ‘The Verdict’, as it now means that Lucy will die. Several other things occur at the start of this book, Jinx and Emory have started a relationship, but Jinx is not really sure how she feels about him. At the same time, there is an illness spreading through the Magical Creatures. The illness is only affecting Magical Creatures, none of those that are magical but ‘Human’ still (Vampyrs, Werewolves, Wizards, Elementals Witches etc), it is affecting the Dragons, Dryads, Trolls, Mermen, Griffins etc. Jinx is hired to investigate the nature of this disease, who or what is causing it, as no magic can cure it, and it appears that it has been crafted. When it impacts Emory’s adoptive parents, Jinx becomes even more invested in resolving who is behind this. This is a very in-depth book, as there is so much happening, that impacts so many characters. From the start of the book in which Lucy is dying, and Jinx is powerless to save her, to the following chapters in which other magical creatures (including Emory’s parents), start getting terminally sick, there is a very grim edge to this book, and you wonder how many of the major (or semi-major) characters are going to make it out alive. Throughout this though, is the romance forming between Emory and Jinx, as even in the midst of all the darkness, they start to realise just how much they care for and potentially, love, each other. There is such an intriguing and powerful story, as Jinx, along with Emory and the ‘Brethren’, those that are half-Dragon and half-Human, but not able to take Dragon form, struggle to find who is poisoning the magical creatures. The investigation takes them down some very interesting political paths that do not bode well for the future interests of magical creatures (I really don’t want to give away spoilers), but Harris creates this fascinating storyline that has such strong moral dilemmas. Whilst the story deals with the interspecies relationships between ‘Human’ and what are considered ‘Non-Human’ species, the ability of humanity to display such open discrimination against anything that they don’t consider ‘the norm’ is rather intriguing in this story and speaks to much wider social issues in our culture in general. The character work is again just exceptional in this book (and series). Jinx continues to grow as we learn more about who she is, and her growing relationship with Emory, which is not just wonderful to watch, but so real. And that is something that makes this book (and again, series), so brilliant, is the true-to-life nature of the characters. Whilst this is a fantasy series, the masterful way in which Harris tells the story, all from Jinx’s point of view, is so utterly ‘REAL’, and natural. It is like you are listening to the dialogue of her actual life. Added to that the stunning array of other characters in her life, Lucy, Nate, Emory, Gato, Stone, Wilf, and all the various ‘Other Realm’ characters who are just so brilliant and totally believable. The characters draw you in, Harris (and Jinx) makes you feel like you are part of her life, and you are involved in the story, like you have some invested interest in the outcome, and it really makes the story so much fun to read. The other outstanding aspect is the world-building, with Harris creating this beautiful parallel world for us to be a part of, full of magic and magical creatures. This world is extraordinary, bringing so much to extra to what is already a compelling story. There is so much depth and detail, Harris has created a fascinating realm, whilst at the same time, remaining true to some of the really old tropes so that some creatures are just epic. Glimmer of Deception sees Jinx finding someone trying to kill her (just for something different). However, this time, it seems that it might be directly related to her parent’s murder, and not just part of the Other Realm, her Investigations, or someone trying to get at her through Emory, or one of several other reasons! Initially, she doesn’t take the threat overly seriously, but as there are further attempts, and it appears that the person trying is not going to stop, Emory and his Brethren, start to become more involved, along with Hes and Amber. It doesn’t take long before they discover that things are a lot more sinister than they first thought. This is a deeply complex story, one in which Harris has intertwined all of the major and minor players from throughout the series so far in what is to be a pretty epic end to this part of the series. I don’t want to give too much away, but Jinx must face some the challenges that led her parents to their deaths, and to find the person who killed them, she is going to have to face some exceptionally power people. This is actually a difficult book to review without giving too much away, as there is so much that happens, but it is such a detailed and in-depth storyline. The character work is exceptional, as it has been throughout the series. In this fourth book though, Harris has really developed her characters and fallen into the groove of each of them. Jinx is such an easy character to read, so effortless and so much fun. She has a wicked sense of humour, and as a truth seeker, an intense passion for the truth and to understand things. It gets her into trouble a lot, but it also equally gets her out of it (Or she has the Prime of all Magical Creatures to help her otherwise!!) There are some truly cutting moments in this book, as a Dad, I felt my heart break for Jinx in this book, but at the same time, I had to put it down to as I was laughing so hard at other times. From the moment you start reading, Harris takes you on a thrill ride, and you just can’t put this book down. There are so many brilliant characters in this book, Manners is one of my favourites, Lucy is brilliant (can’t wait for the new series!), Nate, Emory of course, and so many others. I do warn you though, don’t get too attached to everyone. There are just so many wonderful characters in this book (new and old), it is hard to mention all of them. As with the other books, the world-building (realm-building?), continues to be outstanding, it has been a true highlight in this series. Harris has created a stunning realm, and just made it her own. This book continues to grow with new and wonderful creatures, but those that she has already added are just amazing, and bring her world to life with so much magic. As I have said in other reviews, she has kept with some of the older tropes, but also added to some of the magical creatures to make them her own, making this story a lot of fun to read. The magic system is something unique and a bit different, but it is the individuality of each of her creatures and beings that is really fun. And of course, then there is Glimmer (but you can read about that!) This is an epic series that once you start reading, you can’t put down, you find yourself getting totally absorbed in the characters, and their lives, and wanting to just read more. This is an Urban Fantasy, crossed with a Mystery/Thriller, with a lot of humour, all of it driven by exceptional character writing. At the core of it, is this wonderful story of Jinx, who tells her story like she is just telling you about her day, or talking to you on the phone, and you find yourself laughing, gasping, or solving mysteries along the way (and the odd bit of romance as well!!) Glimmer of Dragons - Throughout the Other Realms series, there is reference to the time that Jinx broke into a place and stole a relic from a Dragon’s place for Lord Wilfred. This is that story. It is before Jinx has been introduced to the Other Realm, and she is just an ordinary P.I. with her ‘Great Dane’ Gato, who is happily going along with her, pretending he is not actually a Hell Hound. Jinx is hired by Lord Wilfred to steal back a priceless heirloom that he lost during a game of poker. He loses them, and then hires Jinx to steal them back, the owner none the wiser as he has so many items. Wilfred however, gives her some very strict instructions to follow on this occasion, some VERY weird instructions. Jinx can normally tell when people are lying to her, she has a weird sixth sense to it (she hasn’t worked out yet that she is a truth seeker!), and she can’t tell what is going on though with Lord Wilfred. And she needs the money, so takes the job. No spoilers – you can read the story, it is a lot of fun, Harris tells a really fun story, using Jinx and her wicked sense of humour to bring this short story to life in a lot of really hilarious and funny ways. Needless to say, we learn exactly what happens at the Mansion, and there is a lot more than just a relic recovery, Jinx is going to discover that there is more to the world than she ever imagined? But since she hasn’t been introduced yet, how did this happen, and what happened to her memories later? Outstanding Character work as always by Harris, we get to learn a lot more about Jinx, and Gato, as well as some other Characters that we are introduced to later in the Other Realm series. This is a great back story for Jinx, as well as the Other Realm Series, and is an absolute must read for any fans of the series. However, it should be read after you have at least read book 1, so that it makes more sense and flows better. Whilst you could read it as the 0.5 book – it does work better if you have read it after book 1.
I'm marking this read, but I only read 3 of the 4 books. OH and clear warning it says .5 is included in this omnibus, but it is not, instead it has 11 chapters from Steward of the Pack or maybe that's the whole novella which is said to be Lucy's POV of scenes from Glimmer of Deception.
Anyhow, I really enjoyed the first two books although I there is a lot that bothered me. The unfortunate thing is the writing doesn't get better and the inconsistencies and things that irk me just continued to grow in the third book. Everything is fast paced, there is no depth, and as much as I liked the characters I couldn't connect with them. Jinx is a Mary Sue, which is fine-- I usually don't mind this-- but she was so "unflappable." Yes, it's cool she can roll with the punches, but dear stars I need a little bit more of a reaction when people hint you might be someone's mate. I also need SOME reaction to that or hell a reaction to being called someone's girlfriend without even knowing you were dating. Something, PLEASE.
I like the plot of these books, I mostly like the characters, even if she is surrounded by men. Seriously, we barely have women on adventures with her which makes Jinx seem even more like a pick me. Women are used as sounding boards, damsels in distress, and to help her look pretty, but only men are allowed into battle. Jinx literally goes to get new magic and barely learns how to use it instead of asking the woman to join her in the fight. Nope, women are only allowed in the background. Which is so stupid especially since Archie and Nate are practically the same character!
The writing just needs a little more oomph, more care, and beta reader checking for inconsistencies. And maybe time to flesh out things. Why wasn't Jinx at all curious about HOW Hes is Other now? How is she not MORE concerned about everything going on around her except the current case and even then she seems to have tunnel vision.
Also, time travel seems like such a cop out to me, I don’t think it helped. That might just be me though since I nitpick the hell out of time travel. And this series hits on every single one of my peeves with it. 1. Objects in a loop with no origin outside of the time loop. How did it come into existence? Who created it? No one. She gave XX to him in the past and he gives it to her in the future, which she gives to him in the past, etc. etc. 2. People can only exist outside of their time for so long and yet Jinx brings XX from the past into the future... for it to stay forever. No big. 3.That whole deal with her not learning about the Other realm just *waves hands* all of THAT.
I'm so frustrated, because I really liked the plot. I enjoyed reading this and just wanted more, but the more I read the more ridiculous everything started to seem and I just... couldn't.
Warning spoiler I loved the first three books and even loved the fourth till the end. It was just too disappointing. This whole series back story to to find her parents killers. And then when she does and finds out her parents minds and souls are in her hell hound I felt relieved. But then the final battle needed a sacrifice so the hellhound jumped in. And then Stone who has been a good cop but kinda turned bad after loss of father in the end helped in the final battle sacrifices himself so she doesn’t loose her parents. I was like ok that sucks but relieved too. To find out the sacrifice was for nothing and only her dad is in the hellhound the mom did die. This was too much. And then to top of off Wilf, the werewolf who has been a friend and has watched over her, helped her out when needed-dies as well in the end. I am too disheartened with this that I can’t trust the books anymore. I loved the series but if they r going to end on such a disappointing note I can’t read this author’s series anymore
I’m new to this author and I’m hooked on this series already. The thought and imagination are exceptional. I was hooked from the first page to the last. I cannot wait to see what happens next for Jinx and Emory. Awesome narration too.
I loved this series! Great world building & exciting adventures throughout! Though the novella at the end would be more useful at the beginning, I think. I love all the characters but especially Jinx, Gato and Emery. 😊
I read each of the books as they were released and loved them all. However, having them all in one collection and reading them back-to-back made me so happy. So many little details had escaped my mind but re-reading how the different characters met or were introduced brought a smile to my face every time! I recommend this series to everyone who asks me for a book recommendation!! Love, love, love the Other Realm series!!
I had already read the Glimmer series but the author changed this book set by replacing the Dragons prequel with a brand new novella that isn’t available separately, at least yet. A portion of Glimmer #4 was rewritten to be in Lucy’s POV, and is called Steward of the Pack. A few new scenes are described since Jess wasn’t around at the time. It was definitely interesting seeing the different perspective of that fight with Rain’s pack.
This book set was on sale for Black Friday at 99 cents, but the KU version was updated as well. So I just got it on KU to read the new novella.
These books had a lot of potential and I read all of them in just a few days but I am not sure if I will read more by this author. I hate it when I become emotionally invested in a character then the author drops them. I also hate love triangles. I do not expect or want any character to be perfect but to have a character written off because they made a poor choice gave me a bad feeling and I was then unwilling to emotionally invest in any of the characters which left everything feeling very superficial which is a shame as I really enjoyed the first book and this series had a lot of potential
The protagonist was a magic mystery girl, she had a magic little blade that gave her ANY power convinient to the plot. Everyone except her had a really deep back story, well, except maybe Emory (love interest), whom only liked her because of her (out of nowhere) time travel experience (where she saved him). Destined mates, check.
The scene with her best friend in the hospital was very emotional, but after that we only hear from her a couple of times.
So basically, a nice story but too loose on the execution.
Setting: Buckinghamshire, London and Liverpool, England Contemporary Genre: Urban Fantasy

Jinx (née Jessica) Sharp is a 25 year old private investigator. It’s a vocation she took up mainly to find out who murdered her parents seven years ago. So far, she has found nothing. Not one clue in the grisly crime scene photos, nothing from questioning the neighbors. Nada from her regular inquiries with the police. No help at all, even with this handy gift that helps her succeed in her other investigations — she can tell truth from lie. Unbeknownst to her, that gift is connected to the Other Realm — a different dimension that occupies the same space as the Common (real life) Realm, but where magic is real. And so are monsters. The first book in the series provides excellent world-building, including differences in the environment, and how events in the Other Realm are perceived in the Common (i.e. a woman riding a huge dog in the Other Realm would appear in the Common as a woman on a horse, a herd of unicorns running through the countryside would look like a pack of slavering dogs, property destroyed by monsters would be explained as ruptures in the gas line, etc.). How people present in the Other Realm is also different. Magic people occupying space in the Other Realm can identify people in Common as magical or not (though they cannot do the opposite — if a magic user is in the Common Realm, they have no idea whether the people around them are magical or not). I did have a problem with time travel thing, but I’ve always had issues with the paradoxes involved. The nice thing about this series though is that the following books reinforce the built world, so you won’t get lost when you get to a point in the plot where you need to understand. The characters are well developed, be they friend or foe (or something ambiguous in between). There’s also growth in some characters, devolution in others, and nothing overly dramatic occurs in the process. Sure, some of the characters learn shocking things, but they don’t react in an over-the-top manner, or do stupid stuff. The relationships between the characters are relatively organic too. Nice to have a heroine identify her reaction to a male character as lust rather than insta-love at first meeting. In fact, although Jinx has no problem admiring the good-looking guys she meets, there isn’t a lot of gratuitous sex. The main character’s internal monologues as well as the dialogue between the characters is often witty, which actually adds to the story. Alyse Gibbs, the narrator, does a pretty good job with accents, and her male characters are passing fair. Her pacing is great so lines are appropriately delivered — witty, sad, energetic, etc. It was nice that she narrated the entire series since it is in the first person from Jinx’s point of view. Overall, this is not only a great deal, it is a great listen. You could binge it right through, or break it up with other listens between the books. Enjoy!
I made the mistake of reading this universe out of order. I started with The Other Wolf series, which focuses on secondary characters from The Glimmer series. And to be honest, after reading this fantastic introductory series, I’m still not a fan of those characters.
But I’m a huge fan of these. And luckily Harris has two series that are very much all about the extremely well written main FMC, Jessica Sharp (Jinx), a truth finder and empath, as she discovers her true identity, the hidden world around her, and the truth behind her parents deaths.
Everything I’d been missing in that last series is here. Harris’s world building is amazing and impressive, encapsulating multiple dimensions and even times, from detailed descriptions of locations and various other creatures and characters.
What I really love about a omnibus is being able to read through the cliffhangers, the wild twists (really great ones) and proceed with the story and characters moving forward with their journey and whatever is happening in the world.
And there normally a lot going on.,
Jinx is so well written, she has depth, and is scrambling to learn how she fits into her new role and life while maintaining who she is fundamentally. We believe in her personality and her core character. And it comes with a Great Dane companion who is extra!
To go further is to ruin some of the most important and well plotted threads of the series. I was absolutely delighted and invested in this series and character because I read this right through.
This is the writing and storytelling I was looking for when I went to see what this author had to offer outside of her work that she is co-authoring with Jillian Dolbeare.
This is fantastic storytelling with main characters to keep you invested in their journey, no matter how long it takes. I’m there for her .
Highly recommended. And headed to The Court Omnibus next.
The Other Realm - The Glimmer Series Omnibus contains the following books:
The Glimmer Series Glimmer of the Other Glimmer of Hope Glimmer of Death Glimmer of Deception
There are 4 books in this series following Jinx, her hellhound, Gato, and their adventures in finding out what happened to Jinx's parents while solving kidnappings, murders, and meeting all sorts of magical beings 🐉🦄🔮🧜🧌🪄🧛♀️🐺 oh also there's skydiving 🪂 and mindfulness practice 🌊
I absolutely LOVED the first book- it was probably my favorite, though the last one was a really amazing culmination of the entire series. There were a few surprise reveals throughout all 4 books that really had my head spinning. 🤯 I never saw them coming! But I absolutely love when a story does that to me. I also liked that the red herrings are more subtle than most, including a certain subplot that took me by surprise that when I go back and read my former notes on said character, I'm like "oh that didn't age well" HA I just have to chuckle at myself. 🤦♀️
I loved that the events take place "superimposed" in modern day Liverpool and how immersive Heather's writing is. I loved the whole PI thing 🕵️♀️ (I wasn't sure if I was supposed to read it like the narration in those old black and white PI movies, but I did anyway), the storyline progressed at a perfect pace, and I loved how I was just itching to get to the end (in the most omg what is going to happen way). The characters are also really well developed and not overly flawed nor overly perfect (well except for the main man that makes the Challenge of the Court series possible, but I'll let you decide on your own 😉) There's an adorably, amazing Great Dane er Hellhound 🐕has a phenomenal story arc and even can time travel.
This series also provides a stepping stone for several other characters in this world to get their own stories.
A complete world Series Book. I very much enjoyed each book and it was difficult to stop reading between real world chores. I managed it in a week, only forcing myself to sleep when I couldn't concentrate. I greatly enjoyed Jinx the PI heroine and the uncovering murder mystery of her Parents. The story begins after she turned twenty five, y years after her Parents were murdered in gruesome home invasion. She was the one to find them and it devastated her, leading to an obsession in finding answers. The first book begins her journey in finding out her special weird knack of knowing truth from lie is from being Other. In this journey through finding answers, she finds new friends and many enemies. There are surprising twisted revelation around each turn that shows a depth of rich feeling and friendship that the author brings out in her written word. Well done Heather! 👏 in book four, after much upheavals, pain and love, Heather has written a meme, you could say, by Mary, the loving Mother of Jinx our Heroine,"ONWARD AND UPWARDS". This echos the strength taken to get thru all the bad life can dish out and let the good be the things that lead us to why life is worth living. I'm not sure I can properly get across what I want to truly say. Just that reading this series and experiencing the life Jinx had gone thru, has shown that real life can be a parallel and if you fight hard enough, you can come out with more good than the bad. Or at least learn something from it. Thank you Heather G. Harris
This author is new to me and I found this set through a Facebook and, I was in a total slump and thought why not try someone new.
Ok, it feels like I hardly ever read MF nowadays and somewhere along the way I have lost a fair bit of love for PNR and been enjoying more contemporary reads but this boxset stole a little piece of my heart and gave me a lot of joy.
So it's set in England, which isn't something you get a lot of, so I loved loved loved this and bought an instant familiarity to the world. As for the supernatural world in this story I thought the author put a lot of work into building it and explaining how things worked and was really impressed with the detail.
Our main character Jinx, had me in stitches the humour in this book had some real LOL moments and I'm hard to please in this area so kudos to Heather G Harris there.
The only reason this boxset isn't a five star for me was the love interest situation...so she doesn't end up with the original guy which I guess would upset a lot of readers. I was quite happy with who Jinx ended up with however I don't think the relationship was as built up as it could have been in light of the complications with guy number 1. I know kinda vague but I really hate spoilers in reviews.
Overall I was really impressed with the story content and the writers style and she has certainly acquired a new stalker.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I "discovered" Heather Harris thru reading her The Other Wolf series. After devouring that series, I was compelled to read The other realm - The Entire Series Omnibus. Glimmer, an inanimate, but very alive sword/knife changes destinies and Gato is much more than a Great Dane. Jinx and Lucy are two badass young women who need equally strong partners to see them thru the twists and turns in this urban fantasy.
I love that the setting is in London and that some of the common words are not common for me, but still understandable. The entire paranormal world created by Heather Harris is exciting. The conniving battles, loving friends and even the painful losses makes this series a nonstop adventure. This author has quickly joined the ranks of my other favorite writers, Quinn Loftis (Grey Wolves Series, Gypsy Healer Series and many more) and Karen Lynch (Relentless Series).
If you like young adult paranormal romance, I recommend all three authors. No mega sex scenes. Some swear words. Lots of fight scenes, laugh out loud moments and then laugh out loud some more, then read Heather Harris, Karen Lynch and Quinn Loftis. They are amazing!
What a great original paranormal read. I love the fact that this was not a rehash of so many paranormal storylines. It was totally original in its world of both Common and Other. All 4 of the main books are fast paced, a nice bit of romance included but the storyline was the main focus. Would I have liked there to be more steam? Yes, however the story kept me gripped as it was well written with a good injection of humour.
I couldn’t really be bothered with the prequel novella at the end and contemplated giving this a 4.5* because of it as I would rather of had an epilogue. But then the author’s note at the end stated that there were more books to come and Jinx’s ( plus love interest- didn’t want to give spoilers) story isn’t finished yet.
I enjoyed this enough to want to follow this author and I will be looking for more books by her. I don’t give too many 5* so this is well deserved.
Great, fast-paced original story with great world building and interesting characters and creatures which are deciphered with depth and multiple layers. Love this new-to-me author's fantasy world and can't wait to read the rest of the books in this world! The story through these books are jam-packed of fantasy, magic, action, a major dose of mystery and some fade-to-black romance. No spice, but I didn't feel that the story was lacking despite no spice.
The books have a great deal of twists and turns that keep you invested and involved in the story but the individual books all end on major cliffhangers - so you just need to dive right into the next one to know what the everloving F is going on! I did both read on my kindle and listen to the books and I loved that narrator for these books!
For every UF and Fantasy lover out there - this is the book; the world for you! It's new, it's fresh and it's so addictive! Highly recommend!
I love this series, featuring Jessica Sharp (Jinx), a truth finder and empath who discovers magic and a fantastical world while trying to find out who killed her parents.
The adventure starts when Jinx is hired to find a missing college student. The story zips along, with hardly a slow moment. I especially liked how well-planned and intricately plotted the books are. The world-building is simply amazing. Author Heather G. Harris has created an entire realm of magic and magical beings with not only history, but also political strife and prejudices.
The characters stay with you and make you care. I have to admit I shed a few tears while reading the series. And laughed quite a lot as well. It was hard to turn the last page, because I wanted so much to stay in the story.
I liked the series, however, occasionally it did slow down and got a bit draggy. It was understandable as she was putting context in the story. On the forth book, I got a bit tired of the series and took time off reading it. It was just a long time reading one story, 4 books in a row. At the end, she did explain how to continue the series, with another series first. Protection of the Pack. I was very disappointed. I wanted to continue with Jinx's story. The court series. Lucy's take on the ending was included in the 4th book. I found that boring as it just seemed, I was just reading the same over again. It really did not make me want to read Protection of the Pack. Jinx's story was a good story and I did enjoy it. I look forward to reading the Court Series. I am now reading Protection of the Pack, to follow her advice.
Full of great characters and action. No sex scenes and limited cussing (for those bothered by either one). I stayed up WAY TOO late on a work night to continue reading because I just didn't want to put it down. Cannot wait to start rereading it and looking forward to more books from this author! Read in the KU, but will be purchasing this and pre-ordering the next one.
Jinx is a great main character. She thinks she's a strange human until she's thrown into the Other and discovers vampyrs, werewolves, wizards, witches, dragons and more exist. She's tough and yet real. She makes mistakes, finds love and friendship and fights through loss and grief. It's a rollercoaster ride and you may want some Kleenex handy.
I have reviewed these books individually as I read each one. The entire series is amazing and I don't say that lightly. I was addicted with the first book and was glad there were several in the series. Not always do books in a series stay true to the first as far as depth of character, plot, etc. But I feel these all do.
This is now one of my favorite authors and I have read all of her other books as well. The humor and realistic conversations between the characters is my favorite part, only second to the world building of The Other Realm, which is so interesting to read about in current times.
This is a wonderful and inventive series enhanced by a superb narrator. Jinx a PI who can hear lies is introduced to another realm, one of dragons, wizards, werewolves and vampires. A world of feuds, prejudice, corruption, conspiracies and survival of the strongest. The stories are involving, entertaining and well written, with a strong snarky heroine, a cute but lethal hell hound, a dragon boyfriend and werewolf bestie. The narration by Alyse Gibbs is flawless and really brings the characters to life. My only gripe is why stick the prequel on the end when you know all the answers. The best thing i have listened to this year. Highly recommended.
The other realm was well written, with great characters and storylines, a great fantasy read. Other than the unecessary US American words thrown in. Words that are not used in general English speech and really ruined the pleasure of reading this series. Ass (dicionary definition: Nth American - Vulgar slang, a person's buttocks or anus) what is wrong with arse? Bupkis - strictly a US American word, unused in English. Potty mouth - what is this nonsense? potty something used by toddlers to toilet train them Very offputting to read such nonsense when the series is obviously written by a UK author and set in the UK.
I love this series, I can't get enough of Jinx, Emory and Gato.
I am so looking forward to read more about them 🤞🏻 I highly recommend it if you like Kristen Banet, Lisa Edmonds or CR Rider, and even if you haven't read them, this series is for you. It has great characters, action pack, mystery, romance, an amazing storyline and world building.
It so good that you wanna know more about all the characters main and supporting (I would know mind to have more knowledge on Amber, Bastion or even Maxwell & Roscoe).
This series is absolutely amazing! The characters are rock solid, and the overall plotline is full of twists & turns, guaranteed to keep you on your toes. There's really interesting information on all of the various supernatural creatures, and of course there's political interspecies intrigue involved. I went into this series wondering if it would be worth my time, and stumbled out at the end, days later, unable to stop reading until I hit the end. Am getting ready now to look up other books by this author. I highly recommend!
Absolutely loved this series…. The heroine Jinx is one tough cookie … Along with her inner circle of friends she attacks head the dramas that invade her life…. Yet she still has a realistic view on things and her humanity is ever present… With dragons, werewolves, and vampires just to name a few, the mythical world of the ‘other’ is a wild ride…. Such a great series and a magnificent author…. I have one more series to read of the other realm and I can’t wait to get lost there…. Again….
This series has all the magic, fantasy creatures, and mystery I could wish for. I love the worldbuilding and characters. Plenty of humor and heart. The narrative really moved along and kept me turning pages,, but was a little sparse on descriptive details, which would have made this a hands down five star review for me. That being said, I would recommend to lovers of both urban and high fantasy, and I definitely plan to read more by this author.
