Untangling a fated heart.

The legends tell us that the Fates wove the soul of an omega into their hair. This is why an omega’s hair is sacred and cutting it is the most hallowed and revered act and saved only for sacred life events. Loss of virginity, accepting a mate, or the death of your mate or child. These events affect the soul.

Valentyne's hair has never been cut. Will he be able to bring himself to cut it when he meets his destined mate, Ren?

I adore Jett Masterson’s work, but the cover of this book made me hesitate to pick it up. I should have read the blurb because I legit thought it was something totally different and not one of their omegaverse works. Don’t judge a book by its cover, they say, and well, I did just that, and it took me until the end of the year to pick it up.

Cutting the Braid is the story of Valentyne, an omega who has been alone for years and meets his fated mate Ren, a newcomer to the village. This was another delightful omegaverse story by Jett. I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

The story had a very fairytale-like whimsical aspect to it. It was no-angst and very much focused on the world and the relationship between Valentyne and Ren. One of the aspects I really adored in this story is that while the main couple were fated mates, there was courtship, gifts, and making sure that they were on the same page regarding their feelings.

Jett has a district writing style and makes interesting choices with their prose. With the stylistic features of their narratives, you will either like or dislike them. For example, the story is technically dual POV. However, there is nothing to denote when it changes; it just moves from Valentyne to Ren and back. I personally have gotten used to it, and it’s another aspect that makes Jett’s work unique.

I also enjoyed the world-building in this story! I would love to see it expanded into a series with more stories from this lovely world.

Overall, this was a sweet no angst read. There are no actual conflicts, just a wonderfully written, sweet love story.

"I hope that he touches you with gentle hands and looks at you as if you put the very stars in the sky."

In this world, Omegas grow out their hair until they find their mate.
Val has the longest hair in his village and thinks he'll be alone forever...until the new carpenter is hired.
This was super tooth achingly sweet... Felt kinda like a fairytale. It was a bit boring and draggy....a whole lot of nothing goin on… but I liked it. I loved how tender and caring Ren was with Val. The parts when Ren played with his hair were so special. 🥺

Low spice.
No angst.
Both virgin MCs.
No OM drama.

Appallingly sweet, but somehow not toothache-inducing.

I loved how the MCs were so confident in their love for each other from the start, but Ren respected Valentyne's boundaries and fears of bonding and having to cut his braid which led to them taking things slow.

This had next to no plot, and was also unexpectedly - to me, at least - low on sex; it was entirely carried by the cosy domesticity.

The worldbuilding had potential but was a bit light-on. They mention their wolves a lot, but I'm guessing they're not actually shifters as that never comes up. Then again, their festival does happen around the full-moon so I feel like there's something in the lore there, some long-distant past, that I would've liked to know about. I appreciated the mentions of their religion and mythology.

Some of the stuff around Valentyne's floor-length hair seemed a bit optimistic to me. Even at waist-length my straight, fine hair is a bloody hassle. I lol-ed when Valentyne casually throws his hair into 2 little buns on his head. Yeah, right. I did appreciate the mentions of his hair being heavy though, and having Ren massage his scalp at the end of the day was a nice touch.

The writing style took me a while to get into and there's a lot of undelineated headjumping here. Once I got used to it though, I found it quite easy to work out whose POV it was, but it's definitely an unusual style and I gather this author always writes like that.

amazing loved it

This book was so refreshing and different. There was culture behind the whole story and I loved it. I think my only issue would be next time have chapters with different POV cause it gets confusing reading one paragraph trying to find out who’s pov your reading.

DNF at 60%. No conflict or stakes, no urgency for the characters to do anything, too much instant trust for a character that supposedly has a hard time getting close to anyone (fated mates or not). The innumerable mid-chapter perspective switches were unbearable and confusing.

Extremely feel-good, extremely slow-burn

“Being a virgin in this day and age is nothing to be ashamed of. You’re like a unicorn.” -Shirley, Community TV show.

I don’t think I anticipated how slow-burn or “waiting till marriage” this book would be. Extra unusual for omegaverse imo. It’s like the Wyll romance in BG3, since most books in this genre are horndogs, while these two lovers are just cute respectful gentlemen saving sex till their wedding.

Very low conflict too, just good vibes about falling for someone.

Ironically I was looking for a high-spiced fast-paced romance, so man did I peg this book wrong lmao. Still cute and lovely.

Spice: 1-2/5
Angst: 1/5

Medieval, fantasy, omegaverse? Take all my money, please.

So far what I've liked about JM books is the no third act conflict. These booked are it, they establish a pair and run with it, and that's amazing. This was like a warm nap on a Sunday afternoon, cuddly, sweet, good pacing and all the swoon.

Valentyne (that could have been Valentine bc I personally hate when authors re-write names, there is no reason for this it just looks weird) is the sweetest to ever lived, I want to bubble wrap him and protect him from everyone. And Ren, YES SIR THANK YOU.

Like a blanket for your heart

From page one it was like the author wrapped a warm, soft blanket around my heart. The world building was enough that you got the universe but not so much that it was distracting. Super low angst (almost no angst) and super high romance. You could really feel the love between these characters. Their journey was beautiful to witness and an utter joy to read. I cannot possibly recommend this book enough!

When the monologue and narration outnumbered the dialogue, it was a sign that this book will be boring and I'm right. This book was boring AF!

starts with a ham fisted info dump, doesn’t have chapter breaks where they need to be

Difficult to read with pages and pages of prose and very little dialogue at times to break it up and not enough chapter breaks either. There’s nothing to give your eyes a break as you read this book. It could be used as an example of why exactly chapter breaks and dialogue used to break up long blocks of text are so important.

The perspective of the book shifts from one character to another with no warning from one paragraph to the next making you have to go back and reread it to figure out who exactly you’re following.

The idea of the book is pretty interesting, but handled poorly in my honest opinion. It uses ham fisted information dumps at the start and the entire concept begins to fall apart as it feels more like the author’s fetish at times than part of the universe’s setting. There’s signs that the author could be great at writing, but in all the eye strain that this book caused me had me DNFing.

What a charming love story. No murder or angst ( not that I don't mind a good angsty murder story too) but this is a sweet story of an Omega finding his Alpha. I adored the world Masterson created and would love to see more stories set in it.

On the off chance that the author reads this, thank you for some much needed advice from a mother to son that what we fear is not the loss itself; but, the loss of a potential future that will never be. Perfect. I lost my father last week and felt bad for crying not for him, but for me. I was mourning the loss of the potential future, and in my case one that would never have been. I could never turn back the clock and Dad was 95, not 39. Those good days are gone, but there is no need to think ALL good days are gone. Anyway, I'm off topic, but thanks. I needed to hear that today.

Eh, this is pretty cute but not what I'm in the mood to read. It's just a little too... sweet. There doesn't seem to be any sort of conflict, no angst or anything that is motivating me to keep reading.

I always seem to find the hidden gems in Kindle Unlimited. I will say one thing about this book though. I am a huge fan of Steam and Romance in any book. And the fact that this book had some of the best subtle romances and angst is an understatement!! I really loved the characters and the way they develop their relationship. Omegaverse is a favour sub-genre of mine and this was one such book that offered me a great story along with a new book bae. (If you like the hand scene from pride and prejudice?? This book will be your jam). And since it's a Historical Romance, th setting adds to the allure !! Honestly one of the best I've read this month 🤣🤌

reads like a fairytale which is kinda my thing

It’s rare to find a book I really, really like in KU, and it’s even rarer to find one that has the feel of a fairy tale that’s really good. This ticks so boxes and I’m hoping there’s more where this came from. (Anyone else with similar tastes should read the grumpy thistle fairy by Delmire heart. Obey me is also a good one with a fairytale feel, though the 1st one is 100% fairytale vibes. I’ll def re-read this book. The characters are great and I’d love more books set in this universe.

I’ve re read it several times now :,) it’s my go to comfort book . I love it . Love Ren and Valentyne so much and the love they have for each other. The possessiveness and protectiveness is also just * chefs kiss * . Also the fact that they are both virgins until they meet each other >_< swoon . They were only meant for each other and no one else !!
I hope I get to read more books like this . Although for now , I’m gonna be retreading this multiple times . It’s everything I want in a book !

Love so complete

Val has lived in hos village all his life and has rejected many offers of matehood. Ren is a new alpha to the village and when they meet they realize they are fated for each other. Val and Ren has an eternal love. They have loved each other through multiple lifetimes. Their love is blessed by the fates and they always find each other. This is a telling of only one or their lives.

Super sweet slow burn love story

I am left smiling after this book - it is so sweet, with absolutely no angst love story.
Even if they are fated mates, it is not "met today - mated in an hour" tale. It is hugs, gifts, walking them home, taking care when they are tired... perfect relationship with slowly falling in love.
