This is Static - communications expert, extrovert, former witness, surrounded by secrets
In a team of monsters I’m the normal guy. The one making peace. The one soothing the raging beasts in the likes of Blue and Snipe. I don’t mind, I trained as a witness, I’ve always been good with the borderline personalities [remembered sadness and guilt].
I guess that’s why I’m drawn to Janus. I sense the complications in him. He’s like a puzzle I want to solve.
When he calls me, utterly terrified, panicking, totally at odds with his usual personality, I know he needs me. I’ll move heaven and earth for those who need me.
I’ve got a huge saviour complex. Show me a cause and I’ll nail myself to the nearest tree for it.
Janus is a cause I’d willingly martyr myself for, and I’ve never even seen his face.
He has hidden himself all the time I have known him, but so have I. If I’m going to save him I’m going to have to show myself, the real me, to him and to the team.
Static is the third book in The Teams, the new series from Romilly King, author of the Handled and Outreach series of mm romances and gay thrillers. Set in the same universe as Handled, the world of The Teams is dark, morally ambiguous, and full of secrets and lies. Please be aware this book ends on a cliffhanger.
I enjoy this author but this book desperately needed an editor
An example of needing an editor is adn which should have been and. At another point the same character's name was used for his body pressed against his.
I enjoy this author, and I enjoyed the story, but it didn't end on a cliffhanger, it ended mid story.
I will read the next book, but I hope its better written.
I ended up giving this book a 3-star rating because I enjoyed the story. BUT - I hated the cliffhanger. Like, raging and moaning at my daughter about it because it was so completely unexpected, and in my opinion, kinda unforgivable. Why not simply wait until the rest of the story was ready before writing such a cliffhanger? Why split it into two stories when it was for one couple and Static was relatively short? I just couldn't figure out the reasoning behind it and it truly spoiled this book for me.
Now, I know that it’s partially my fault for not reading the blurb fully – it does state at the bottom that the book ends on a cliffhanger. And I have read other stories that had ended in such a way, understood the reasoning and been relatively happy to wait for the resolution. There was just something about this one that enraged me.
The story was unexpected inasmuch as it involves a Dom/sub relationship – I didn’t see it coming, although the control aspect of things made sense in the context given. There wasn’t very much relationship building, but perhaps that’s because things have been building up to this in the other Teams books – Static has always had an interest in Janus, so I guess I should accept that that is all the ‘building’ we’re going to get.
I would have liked to know more about Static’s previous experiences, especially in relation to his first Witness. There seemed to be a lot thrown into the pot that covered a lot of bases but seemed very surface in the way it did it. There were also a few noticeable spelling and grammatical errors that dragged me slightly out of the story – it could do with a bit of an edit maybe? Perhaps I am letting my disappointment colour my view? Anyway, I’m going to leave it as a 3/5 for now and revisit once the fourth book is available – hopefully Janus will complete it satisfactorily and I can view them (in my head) as one book.
What an absolute disappointment. I have read many if not all of her stories, as most of them are very good. This feels like a summary of a story, not a complete book.
Everything is on fast forward, and most things are summed up after they happen, instead of telling us organically in real time. It's like the whole book is just one long synopsis, instead of a complete work.
I feel incredibly cheated, because this is a good idea, there is a really interesting story buried in this underwhelming try, and she can be a good writer when she wants to be, but this is such a complete waste of a good concept, interesting characters, and my time.
This book is the definition of shallow, it is rushed, incomplete and a veritable disappointment. Especially when she repeatedly builds up to a big event, but everytime its time for a climax, she skips it, just jump over it completely, and instead sums it up in a few sentences after the fact. I feel so cheated and tricked.
She knows how to write, so its beyond me why she doesn't just write out the climax as it happens?! It's like she either doesn't trust herself to do it well, or as if she's to lazy to be bothered with anything remotely complex. I can't quite tell.
If this where someone I was unfamiliar with, it would probably be a three star read, but as I know what she's actually capable of, and I have higher standards for her, coupled with my anger at her abdication of responsibility, in conjunction with my crushed hopes for this book, I can't bring myself to rate it higher than a two.
Also this is way to short, its more a novella or like a serial, than a complete book. It honestly feels more like a cold-hearted cash grab, that she wrote in an afternoon, and like she started out inspired, but then she just wanted it to be over, so she sped through everything from relationship-building to plot and action, just to make it end quicker.
I’m loving this series and getting to know the Team, and this book is a great addition to it. Finally, we get to know more about the mysterious Janus and it’s a lot but well worth the read. I loved the dynamic between Static and Janus and the story was full of the usual suspense, danger and steam that I love from Romilly King. This book ends on a cliff-hanger, unlike the others, but, it was a great read and I can't wait for for the conclusion. I was given an ARC of this book to read and this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Other than editing issues which is lazy and annoying, this short read sheds light on the mysterious Janus and the caring Static. Throw in a few steamy kinks along with murder, mayhem and decades long mystery and it is a riveting read. The finale concludes this series, but I do wonder about Snipe and Berk..... anymore coming
4.5 I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will forgive that it is a cliffhanger. Better editing was needed for some glaring errors. I would like to read more about Janus and James, even though I had to read an important scene through my fingers. Poor Janus! The D/s aspect of the book is not overwhelming, even when it seems as if it will be. It was consensual and hot. I think the aftercare is what opened Janus up to James and to his own tragedy. The ‘I love you’ scene was wonderful! I like all of the characters in the secretive world of this book series. I hope that Berk and Snipe might become a couple, I enjoy their interplay. Edwards was excellent in this. Give him a book, too. * The poem, ‘Motion’, is beautiful. I have read it often since reading this book. Thank you, author, for using it.
