Liminal: Transitions, Thresholds, and Waiting with God in the Space Between

Rate this book
Nestled between the devastation of Good Friday and the joy of Resurrection Sunday is the confusion, anger, and hopelessness of Holy Saturday. It is a reminder that most of our lives are lived in this middle space-after something has ended but the new has not yet begun. How do we navigate the uncertainty and pain of living in the space between what once was and what will be? How do we walk by faith when the future is dark and unclear? With real-life examples, author and pastor Mike Brown helps us understand what it means to wait on God.

Full disclosure: I have known the author for ten years, 8 of which he was my pastor, and over the last year our families have developed a more personable relationship. Clearly, Mike's voice is one I value and respect.

Trying to be as objective as I can be given that context, this book holds some incredible wisdom that I wish every Christian would take to heart. I'm unfamiliar with the breadth to which this topic is covered in other books (or other peripheral topics of grief and suffering for that matter), but one strength of Liminal is the culmination of wisdom from many sources! Cross references with scripture and other works abound, most of which I've added to my reading list. Though it is not about suffering, it is a guide for those times when the crisis has passed, life may be calm or unsure, and the presence of God may seem distant. How do we wait faithfully when God's voice isn't clear, or not coming as quickly as we want it to? Indeed, it's the process that matters.

My relationship with Mike adds a deeper layer to this book though. I was around for many of the challenges and losses that he refers to and have seen the transformation of his soul through those ten years. The Mike I first met wouldn't have been capable of writing this book and in these pages is a celebration of the transforming nature of God's presence. The wisdom here is hard-earned and gratefully (even if reluctantly at times) received. It is embodied within a soul, a story not only written on pages, but in a life. It's one we encounter over and over again in God's story of redemption and yet never grows old. I pray it's one that you and I both find ourselves a part of in our own time and I'm grateful for books such as these and the guidance of the faithful who have gone before us.
