The Big Idea

Dokážeme zachrániť planétu Zem?

Rate this book

A book-length brochure aimed primarily at high-school–aged readers. It covers basic information on most key environmental issues and their possible solutions. It mentions global warming, anthropogenic climate change, plastic pollution, species extinction, the use of renewable energy sources, reforestation, rewilding, veganism, the Green New Deal, Extinction Rebellion, Greta Thunberg… The issue of overpopulation is notably absent.

The brochure is written in the spirit of intersectionality. For example, according to the author, calling for bans and environmental taxes is not the right approach, arguing that “the consequence of higher taxes on flying could be that poorer travelers would no longer be able to afford it.” I suppose the logical next step would be to make flights free—after all, not everyone can afford them even now. I doubt I will ever fully understand this line of humanist thinking, but I do understand that priorities must be set, and that we have to decide whether what we are doing is for the Earth, or merely for the species Homo sapiens. Because if it is for the Earth, then this kind of transport (and many other things) would have to be radically restricted. Earth first.

You won’t find the kind of complex, systemic solutions that Graeme Maxton writes about in his books in this brochure.

Finished this in one sitting. The level of content in this was perfect for someone (like me) who knows about climate change but does not have a background in scientific study. I would perhaps have liked a little more provision of resources/ideas about steps you can take at the end, but overall this was a brilliant read and I feel much better informed.

2.5 ⭐️

I read this for school so I might be bias against it sense I had no choice. I found it too simple and none of the ideas stuck with me. The pictures and descriptions were interesting but nothing incredible. I would have enjoyed some case studies and further exploration into idea and topics.

Powerful conclusion. Good level of content. I've been introduced to several ideas and technologies I've been happy to explore further.

Would’ve been 4 stars but this book is SCARY. Also, didn’t like the different font sizes. All in all an uncomfortable read.
