El. Punk. Bag of trouble. Trig’s first love.
Trig. Outlaw biker. Killer. El’s only hope.

El has reached the end of the line. Indebted to a cartel and unable to pay, he’d sooner die than be tortured. There’s no one he can ask for help. He’s burned all bridges and trusts nobody. His life is a well of regrets and he can spot the biggest one just as he’s about to die, because it has a face and a name.

His old flame appears out of nowhere and saves him.
His old flame who left him to join a biker gang.
His old flame who shouldn’t even know where El lives.

But Trig knows exactly where El lives and what he’s been up to, because Trig never gave up on him. He was told to stay away, so he respected El’s wishes. Kind of. Almost. Not exactly.

Trig’s been keeping watch from the shadows, but he’s done with that.

This time, he’s not letting El go.

This wasn’t great, but it definitely wasn’t awful either.
The writing was engaging enough, and so were the characters, even if they frustrated me a lot.

The story is about two childhood lovers, Trig and El, who met each other when they were both homeless and living on the streets, having to fend for themselves. They fall in love while moving around from place to place, getting into fights with other punks, having to scrunch up food just to survive, but overall still being happy because they had each other.
Eventually, though, Trig became involved with a motorcycle club, trying to look for a better life for both of them, but El wanted nothing to do with any of that, so they broke up after El gave Trig an ultimatum where he said Trig had to either choose the motorcycle club or him.

The actual book begins five years after the break-up, and El is in a lot of trouble due to some nasty business with a drug cartel, but luckily Trig comes in to save him from imminent death. As it turns out, Trig had been stalking El all these years without El’s knowledge. Trig never stopped loving El, and always kept the hope alive that they would someday get back together.
However, after having to come to his ex-boyfriend’s rescue, Trig decides the waiting is over and it is now time for him to reclaim his man, and make El see that they can have a life together, even though Trig is now a steady part of the very same Coffin Nails MC that El despised so much.

There were things about this romance that I liked and things I didn’t. Of course I loved that Trig was very headstrong when it came to winning back his man and I loved that all of his friends knew about El and that he still loved him to the point of obsession.

However, Trig’s devotion always seemed a bit lacking when you considered how their break-up came to be. I mean.. Trig did literally choose the MC over El. Time and time again, he chose his biker buddies over “the love of his life” and that just didn’t sit right with me; especially since he wasn’t even a member yet when they initially broke up, so it’s not like the bikers were his friends/family back then. And then when the bikers actually threatened El and tried to torture him later on in the book, Trig still wanted to stay. It appeared he was just perfectly okay with the fact that his supposed friends wanted to abuse “the love of his life”? Like… What the fuck?
I mean, El might have been an annoying little shit, and I wouldn’t survive two days being coupled up with a guy like him, but still, if I had been El, I’d never have taken Trig back. Coming second to a biker club? No thank you.

“I want to protect you. Why would you run like a rat? Why do you lie? What is wrong with you?”
“Because I hate this fucking club! They took you away from me! It was supposed to be us against the world. You promised me all of that, and still chose them! I even asked you to go with me tonight, and you chose them again!”
“You were the one who told me to fuck off!”
“I wanted you to go after me!”

Another thing that really did not work for me and honestly made me a little angry, was the fact that while Trig apparently stalked El all these years, and never stopped loving him, he just fucked every single guy he came across instead of spending his time trying to win back his man. It seemed almost.. disloyal. And it made it once again a bit hard for me to fully love their romance.

He wasn’t proud of it, but he’d felt so desperate to reconnect with El that he’d purchased the perfume and offered the bottle to a hangaround he often fucked. A part of him had been hopeful that if he closed his eyes, the familiar scent could fool him into believing that El was the one sharing his bed, but the experience had been such a disappointment he’d never had sex with that guy again. No one could beat the real thing. Nobody came anywhere close to his El.

Also, can I just mention that everyone in this series is so incredibly unlikable? At least, that’s what I’ve gathered from the two books I’ve read so far. Seriously, how am I expected to read the previous books and get invested in their lives and romances when they all piss me off already? They don’t seem like characters I would love. And it’s making me hesitant about continuing the series..

Anyway, back to the story at hand: I thought it was quite an enjoyable read, and it definitely didn’t bore me, but I had some issues with the details surrounding the relationship that made it hard for me to fully love these otherwise favourite tropes of mine!

A To Z Book Title Challenge: G

The only part I really enjoyed about this book was the sex scenes. This author duo really know how to bring the heat and I’m here for it but I found the rest quite fluffy for an MC book. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I also didn’t really like the couple because while I understood Trig wanting more than a life on the streets with El, it just seemed ridiculous to me that he’d leave him behind. If this had taken place a few months later or something then maybe but there is no way I’d be able to stalk/watch my ex who I still loved cry, fuck others for rent money, fall apart at the seams etc and be able to stay quiet and not reach out for 5 fucking years. Yah Trig tried to help him in his own way but these two had a really deep connection and it just made no sense to me that one of them wouldn’t have tried harder.

I’m so desperate to like something by these authors that’s not just Jack Addison because I love their writing style but I just always feel kind of mehhhh about what I read. It probably doesn’t help I’m not a huge fan of the MC trope but one of these days I hope to find one that just works for me. I’m rounding up because despite my issues, I actually liked some of the side characters enough to look up their stories and while I was a bit bored at times I didn’t hate it.

El finds himself in trouble with the cartel and right before his life is going to end, his long lost love Trig steps in to save the day. Trig has been hiding in the shadows protecting and taking care of El. But this time when Trig steps in he promises to make El his for good. But they'll have to overcome some obstacles before they get their HEA.

I didn't like El. I thought he was a whiny bitch that couldn't get his life together. Trig wasn't much better with his savior complex. Their relationship was weird to read because of how short the story was but we as readers knew they had a past that imploded the day Trig chose an MC brotherhood over El and El was butt hurt and ran away. For two people that seemingly couldn't live without each other, they sure indulged in other men and vices. Honestly my favorite thing about this was revisiting Grim and Mischa. Overall, not a win in my book.

I've read only a couple books in this series (one of them being Tooth and Lucky's), but I followed along with the story just fine.

I adored Trig. He is total badass who has always loved El with all his heart. Trig's a good guy who didn't leave El to join a motorcycle club. It was El who gave Trig an ultimatum, and Trig chose security and stability, although he never stopped protecting El.

Now let's talk about El and how he didn't deserve Trig. El is selfish and temperamental, impetuous and prone to making very bad decisions. He's all angry with Trig for joining the Coffin Nails, even as Trig saves his ass from a drug cartel.

So a MC is bad but a freakin' DRUG CARTEL is just fine?

*lord, save me from stupid boys*

The chemistry between El and Trig was scorching, and El did finally come to his senses but I'm still knocking off a star because I just couldn't with him.

I loved this. I wish it had been longer so we could get a closer look at El and Trig's past. I understand this type of stories is an acquired taste for some, but I adore this whole series.

It stands alone but I appreciate visiting all characters again.

⭐︎ 3.5 Stars of Frustration, Grudgingly Rounded Up to 4 Stars ⭐︎

Right away, this got a whole star off for El. He frustrated the fuck out of me. He was mostly okay at first. At first it was like "Trig chose a motorcycle gang over me" which...okay. But as we got to know Trig more and came to understand how much it meant to him, and that really El left Trig after he gave him an ultimatum, I was firmly in Trigs corner, and officially annoyed with El.

I got pissed at him when he got all high and mighty about Trig joining a gang and not seeing the irony or hypocrisy in working for the fucking Cartel however small or temporary it was supposed to be. He was all "The biker gang is dangerous, they'll all betray you eventually, you can't trust them" but he's perfectly fine borrowing money from the fucKING cartel and doing a job for them?????

Make it make sense, friends! El was on my shit list there for awhile. Especially when he tried to run away from Trig SEVERAL times, for no fucking reason, other than his attitude on the biker gang still being the same and thinking that giving in a staying will make him "tied down" and "trapped"

Which, as this went on and we got his inner thoughts, made me understand him more, sure, and his motivations. He even, later on, came to see the error of his ways and what a turd he's been and how shitty he's been to Trig, who has done nothing but try to be there for him and not give up on him once. El has given up on him in return several times.

I think coming to understand El a little more and becoming less annoyed by him by the end made me round up on this.

But doesn't change the fact that he acted like the injured party when he walked away from Trig, didn't even bother to give the Coffin Nails MC a chance, and expected to Trig to look at El as his entire world, and continue to live with him on the streets in a tough life, moving from city to city and trying to find ways to survive. As if Trig isn't allowed to want a home, in whichever way that is, and to have people to have his back.

El thought to himself that he was selfish, and he fucking was. I do really wish that once he had these revelations, that he'd said them out loud, to Trig, in his apology. Trig let him get away with his bullshit behavior WAY too easily. Sure he apologized and explained a little, but I wanted a big, long ass explanation and apology where he explain why he behaved the way he did, and why he did wrong, and that he was selfish and actually jealous and insecure and it was never actually about the MC being too "dangerous" (obviously, as he was willing to work for the fucking cartel) but because he was jealous of other people getting Trig's attention and potentially caring less for him if he was around other people who cared about him.

How co-dependent - which Trig does admit to himself as well. Because like no, El, Trig doesn't have to be and shouldn't literally be your everything, and vice versa. Let him have a life and a home if he wants to, even if it's with a dangerous MC??? It's where Trig wants to be and where he wants to settle roots.

I mean, I guess it did show that they were too immature - or well, El certainly was - the 5 years prior when they split up to have a lasting relationship with each other at the time. You can be so very much in love and be such huge part of each other's lives, but you still can't literally be each other's everything. Life should be more full and complex than only relying on one person.

So yeah, El frustrated the fuck on me, and it was close to not liking him entirely for me. BUT....but....he and Trig did have wonderful chemistry, and before he was a complete shitstain, I WAS enjoying El all right, and enjoying him and Trig together for sure. Trig and El's first time having sex after they've been apart for 5 years was seriously hot and explosive.

And after El faces some consequences for having his head shoved so far up his ass, he does chill out and give in to giving the bike gang way of life a try.

Also I did enjoy things like Trig being a total badass (also he is a big reason why this rating is so high as well. I loved Trig.) and things like petty, vicious jealousy that came from El. I mean, he was being a complete little bitch of an asshole, but him punching a guy in the stomach over Trig was pretty hot. He was a little shit at the time, but the possessiveness is surely hot.

Also I've only ever read Tooth and Lucky's story in this series before, but it was still fun to return to this Coffin Nails MC, and get to see Tooth and Lucky again, as an even more settled couple.

So overall, this was an enjoyable story and I did kinda like El in the before and for sure the after of him having his head so far up his ass, but also he was the major reason for the negatives to this story for me.

Like he didn't have to be written as such a hypocrite, a selfish little shit, and an ungrateful one at that. When he had thoughts that he didn't deserve Trig, I was kind of agreeing with him. BUT he was better by the end, and I do hope he really lived up to being someone who deserved Trig, and that he grew up and matured a little more too. He was more settled in the epilogue, which was nice.

So overall, if El had been....a bit different, this would have probably been a 5 star read for me. But El was such an asshole for a good portion of this that I had to give stars off.

It's lucky that Trig was so awesome and an amazing character, otherwise I would have rounded down on this as well.

Overall...was reading this worth it? I guess. El is just such an annoying asshole for a lot of this that it's hard to fully recommend it.

I'd say, it's up to you to decide. Others might not have such a hate/love relationship with El like I did. I don't know. It's up to you to read this review, read what I said about El and what he says and how he acts in this, and decide if you personally can deal with that bullshit. Otherwise, if you can't, I'd say skip this...or just be prepared to be angry for a good portion of this at one of the MC's🤷‍♀️

Morally ambiguous characters indeed. It's what it's all about. Weird, kinda gross (I mean the description of El ...) all of that and an asshat attitude for a cherry on top. Why in the world would Trig pine for this wiener? Because it's K&A freak central. Nobody does dirty biker better. Over-the-top, explosive deliciousness. Not for everyone mind you. I loved it. Wiener and all. The revisit was cool too. 😎

This was good but it did sort of seem to be going in circles because I felt like the same things were being said in different ways, it made my head hurt by the end. It started off great but got too wordy in the last three quarters.

I liked Trig and I thought he was trying to be better not only for himself but for El and their circumstances. El was compulsive and not in a good way. He took longer to grow up. He felt abandoned and jealous when Trig decided to join the Coffin Nails MC and I understood why he felt that way since he thought it was him and Trig against the world. Once Trig rescued him he was pretty ungrateful though and he acted very immature at the MC clubhouse. He’s lucky he had Trig to protect him.

Overall this was what I come to expect and almost always love about K.A. Merikan. This wasn’t my favorite but it was still a good story and if you’ve read other books in the Coffin Nails series you’ll be happy to see those guys again.

I've read some of the other books in the series, so it was nice to revisit characters from previous stories, especially Lucky and Tooth. I loved Trig and his relationship with his brothers in the club. I'm not sure I liked El, and I think Trig could do better. I don't understand why he bothered stalking and protecting El. I'm glad El decided to embrace club life at the end, mostly for Trig's sake.

This is a short and a freebie, so I guess I shouldn’t complain too much. But I’m not used to the Coffin Nails books being quite this short, so it does feel like a lot is missing from the story when I just want to spend more time with all the characters.

Content notes include attempted suicide, cutting, violence, death, codependent relationship, kidnapping, mentions of possible torture, and stalking.

This book introduces us to El and Trig. They were lovers years ago who had met as two teenage runaways. Trig wanted stability and an ability to provide for El, and winded up joining the Coffin Nails MC; however, when presented with an ultimatum between choosing the MC or El, El winded up leaving Trig. By the time this book starts, El hasn’t seen Trig in five years.

The last three books in the series have been with the Smoke Valley MC, so I think it’s fun that we make a return to the Coffin Nails in Detroit here. However, this story is a little different because it takes place quite a bit into the future from the last time we saw these characters? I don’t remember Trig from any of the other books (the last being Heart Ripper). So, I’m guessing Trig enters their lives after that but that means that at a minimum, five years have passed in the lives of all these Coffin Nails members?

I don’t know why, but it makes me sad to think we’ve missed so much of their lives and so much has happened since. Like, even the President has changed? Priest is still around but so many changes seemed to have happened and it’s bittersweet to think about. Because that means Hunter and Asty’s kid is older now too and I don’t think I’m handling this new information well.

However, it was fun to see Grim and Misha again. They’re fun and still in love in a way that only they will understand. It makes me laugh that Lucky and Misha still don’t get along, but I also wonder why there’s still bad blood between them.

I think it’s a downside that this book is so short. I like Trig, if only for the reason that he’s a member of the Coffin Nails and Grim has taken him under his wing. But El is a harder sell for me. I guess I kind of understand that he was extremely codependent on Trig for so many years, but I just don’t like his attitude at all. It’s a lot of animosity towards the Coffin Nails that he’s just magically supposed to get over and for readers to reasonably believe in such a short timeframe. The story basically takes place over 2 days. There’s 3 sex scenes but less time for El to really discover how great the Coffin Nails can be, or for readers to actually get a chance to like him at all.

This story works as a good catch-up to see the Coffin Nails members and the club again, but the relationship in this book definitely felt much weaker than any other book in the series.

This was a pretty solid novella. As always, I love the consistent imagery throughout - characterizing El as a feral cat was spot on. The second chance tension and working out old problems was well done.

El however...while a good character, was very frustrating. i felt like he needed to apologize more at the end to Trig, for being such an ungrateful brat the whole time. He sort of acknowledges how unreasonable he's been, but not quite enough for my liking. Also totally hypocritical in a hilarious way, since he got involved with a cartel and then judged an MC. Dude.

Trig was so sweet and dedicated though. Poor baby.

Quotes:

El had been a feral cat for so long that kindness made him wary rather than grateful.

Instead of staying in the closet like a good little gay punk boy, he’d made a spectacle of his coming out by saying “Jesus was kinda hot”

Those two guys were both odd, rude, gay, and involved with bikers. Maybe El would fit in after all?

No matter what feelings he harbored for Trig, he wouldn't let his life be involved with those bikers. They were no better than the cartel

That guy was like a rabid raccoon with sticky fingers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I was not expecting such wonderful characters and a plot line that drew me in until the satisfying ending. Trig and El are beautifully written. The depth of their devotion and the grace of forgiveness gave the narrative so much feeling from these two rough talking and scarred young men. The authors did not overuse angst during the emotional scenes and the sex scenes were combustible and some of the best that I’ve read in awhile.
I was almost bemused while reading the scenes at the mc clubhouse. The characters were written differently than most mc books that I read. They had the grittiness and surface immorality, but they were all intriguing and I hope they have books.
I read it at Prolific Works.

I really liked this even if it did make me cry. El was not a particularly pleasant human being and Trig was a stalkery manipulator but this wasn’t ever meant to be a HEA between two sweet people. They were both deeply flawed and had baggage that could fill a cargo ship. They both made massive mistakes and co tiniest to do so. But I do genuinely believe they loved each other, even if it was in a codependent and strictly not healthy way. In a lot of ways I felt for El. He was a rude, arrogant little sh*t and far from likeable but it always came across to me that it was because deep down he was constantly petrified of everything. Fear can make monsters of even the nicest people and every time he lashed out it seemed to come directly from fear. He clearly needs to work on how he treats others, including Trig and those who are willing to help him, but I think that does start to happen. Trig’s unwavering (and obsessive) devotion to him when he saw he might have another chance wasn’t healthy but I think is what El needed and if they can make it work then I’m glad that they can find their own version of a HEA.

I like second chance romances. I like angst. I like darker romances. In theory, this book should have hit all of my buttons.

Unfortunately, characters are a big part of what will make or break a story for me. Even though I deeply enjoy the tropes in this book, I couldn't get over the fact that I genuinely just did not like one of the MCs in this book. Every time I was in an El chapter, I found myself wanting to do anything else, because the character annoyed me.

I did like Trig though and I found myself curious about some of the side characters. Those characters, along with the general plot and the fact that the book was incredibly well-written, kept me from DNF-ing the book. But El's character definitely made it lose some stars.

In all honesty, I'd give this book a 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. It is a quick read, filled with a lot of good steam, but please heed the trigger warnings - including attempted suicide, violence, organized crime, and mentions of torture.

If you're looking for a quick dark MC romance involving second chances, this would be a good choice. Its currently free as part of the YBBB giveaway.

Second Chance Love

El is constantly getting himself in trouble and this time it's with the cartel. Trig is El's ex but has been keeping tabs on him the last five years after they broke up. When the cartel comes to collect, Trig saves El once again. Trig joined the Coffin Nails MC five years ago and wants El to be with him but El hates the club and feels they stole Trig from him. El tries to get away from Trig several times but Trig won't let go this time. Lots of gratuitous violence and steamy sex to keep you wanting Trig and El to get their HEA. This series has been my favorite for years now and with this thirteenth book I can still say I highly recommend this series. The author's also include an epilogue too.

This is actually my first read by these authors and I have to say I rather liked it. I don't usually read the biker trope, but I like my romances a bit 'rough' and they sure delivered here.

The only thing that bothered me in this book was El's indicisiveness. Trig was really doing his best to show how much he cared, but El just kept being stuborn. Grrr...

All in all, a good read and I'll surely be checking out the other books.

My first read by this author and now I want to read the whole series. El and Trig had been together on the streets when El had escaped his family. But then Trig joined the Coffin Nails MC and El left. Now 5 yrs later, Trig crashed thru the roof of El's trailer to save him from 3 cartel thugs. Can Trig save El? And convince him to stay with him at the MC? Can El learn to trust his 1st love again and stop running? Liked the ending.....wanted more.

Trig and El story was heartbreaking

Two teens living on streets, fall in love, and part cause one wanted to join a motorcycle club to better themselves. El was struggling but Trig was stalking him and trying to look out for him. When Trig killed three men to save El they had to fight each other and the MC to stay together. How they become together and whole again was fun to read.

I liked this one. But El frustated me a lot, at one point, he was just being difficult and stubborn for no good reason. Trig just wanted a family and a way for them to live confortably but El just didn't see it. He made Trig chose and he chose the MC both times and I didn't fault him for it at all. I liked them together but I would have liked to see them more, the book felt shorter than the others in this series
