August 2025 reread: Definitely glad I reread. It was an impulse. The characters are lovely. Their confession is still one of the most innovative, impressive, and perhaps confronting… is the word I've read. Ru is so unusual in his design. Ker is fantastic; he is the cover. I kinda hate that this is only a novella. These two deserve more, even if they are tropish in their start point (ie friends with benefits that catch feelings).
I appreciate the number of women in this. Kerrick, Veruna and the villain of the novella are male. Ker loves wearing make-up and is extremely pretty. But most of the supporting cast are female and both main characters were raised with strong female influences. I think it is a strong writing choice.
“Then why would you assume I would be okay with that term when used in the presence of my…my friend?” In an instant, Kerrick was no longer the affable hero the media liked to interview, but the man who’d achieved the rank of major in the United Terran Systems Armed Forces during wartime. His gaze sharpened and hardened, and his posture went ramrod straight as he moved into a parade stance.
“Please apologize.”
Marvin regarded Kerrick with a confused look. “I don’t understand.”
“A-pol-o-gize,” Kerrick said slowly. “It means to say—”
I put my hand on his shoulder. “Kerrick.”
Marvin shook his head. “You fought in a war against…against them. For years. And you’re friends with one. I don’t get it.”
Kerrick bristled. “Maybe it’s because I’m not a racist asshole.” — Kerrick StarCourser, Marvin and Varuna Das
Warnings: From the author themselves, "contains violence, mentions of past sexual assault, murder, and graphic sexual situations." I also want to add racism and coerced drug use to this.
The Sheriff of Shard Hills follows Sheriff Varuna Das as he arrives in Shard Hills on Omarth to be their new Sheriff, his first planet-side posting after a life on ships and space stations. Varuna is half human, half Dimeti. The Dimeti are the race humans have been at war with for years only recently coming to some sort of cease-fire, now beginning peace talks. Varuna has a sexual relationship (friends with benefits but easy on the friends) with Major Kerrick StarCourser, hero of The Dimeti War and quite a few years younger than Varuna. When Kerrick shows up right before Varuna leaves his previous posting at Garda Station covered in bruises and comes with him to Omarth Varuna is full of doubts and questions but they don't do questions. As well as trying to figure out his sorta relationship with Kerrick, Varuna is facing challenges with his new position. New people, old enemies and questions about his past. It is a bit of a mystery plot that uses people well.
A bit on the characters. I adore Varuna inside and out. Kerrick first though. Kerrick is lovely. He is strong and protective even though Varuna really doesn't need it. Honestly, his caring nature is balanced well by a vicious streak that only comes out in flashes which Varuna indicates is him wearing his title, his whole demeanour changes to reflect his rank and position. He was born and raised in a rough and wild Canada, he's intelligence is insane. I like the way his whole character is presented, it is worth noting that the whole story is told through Varuna's perspective. What we see of Kerrick is somewhat coloured by that. Okay, so Varuna. Let's start by saying he presents mostly with characteristics of a Dimeti not of a human, with one exception... "Of all the things that made me other, this was the one that bothered me the most. Dimeti didn’t have tails. Humans didn’t have tails. But apparently when you mixed the two DNA strands together, they created a tail." (Varuna). He doesn't have a traditional human shape face (including lips), his ears are pointed and his teeth are those of a predator. He keeps himself human and refuses to give into his predator nature. I like his spine, his ability to have the racist comments thrown at him just roll off him and his humanity. Together Kerrick and Varuna bring out the best in each other. Their hook-ups only, oops I caught feelings trope just suits them well.
Some quotes...
• As I walked down the corridor, my boots clomping along the station’s variegated metal floor, I decided they were going to be the first things I got rid of. Maybe the shuttle pilot would let me space them. It would be a fitting start to my new life, watching a hated piece of my old one drifting off into space. — These are the opening lines and I really like them. They set the right tone. Give you an idea of Varuna's character and the setting of the book. (Varuna)
• The fact he’d forgotten I had an appendage that was so… alien made me feel all warm inside. It meant he wasn’t focused on my otherness.
What a gift. — This is a moment. There is a strong appeal in the idea of love coming from seeing past the other. And Varuna is so other. I adore Kerrick's ability to see past expectations. (Varuna)
• “Mmm, I love that look on you,” he murmured. “Like me worshipping you is your due, and you’ll pounce if I stop.”
My eyes widened. “What?”
“It’s a good look. Trust me.” — It would be a good look. But it would be horrifying for a man scared of his base nature (not wrongly) to hear. You can hear the way this would be said, the heavy way Kerrick would speak, the lust.
• — Between this and the very them proposal that very soon after. It just felt so fitting as a conclusion. I really appreciate the low-level twist that is someone who loves to cook opening a cooking school not a restaurant. How often do we see it jump straight to a restaurant? (Varuna and Kerrick)
This is getting 5 stars for the confession scene alone. It's so well executed, romantic and in that moment absolutely perfect. I've never had the inclination to rate a book on one scene alone but this time I needed to. It was a moment of pure love. I think it likely would have been a 4-star book without that scene. This appealed to me on a level wasn't expecting. The nearest thing I could come to was Manner of Death (2020 Thai drama) vibes. Though less of the enemies-to-lovers (or whatever it was TanBunn had going on) and more opposites attract and friends with benefits. They share a vibe of the main relationship being somewhat secondary to the wider plot; you know you're going to get a resolution to the romantic plot but it isn't the driving force. It was a pleasant change, particularly for a novella where space is at a premium. Nothing about this feels rushed; it feels comfortable and well-paced.
“Kerrick?” His name came out of me on a whisper. I hadn’t seen him for… shit, two years? Two and a half? Not something I held against him, of course. He’d been off saving the galaxy.
“Varuna.” My name left his lips on a sigh, and there were too many emotions carried with it for me to parse them out, one by one. But then I didn’t have to. He staggered across the room into my arms, his face lifted for a kiss. — Varuna Das and Kerrick StarCourser
