The Sheriff of Shard Hills

Rate this book
As a half-human, half-dimeti hybrid, Varuna Das is used to being treated poorly, despite being a cop. He even understands it. What he doesn’t understand is why Major Kerrick StarCourser, a young, beautiful war hero, keeps coming back to him for no-strings sexy fun. Kerrick’s made a career of fighting dimeti in creative ways, so his interest in Varuna has never made any sense. But this time, instead of a quick visit, Kerrick settles into Varuna’s new home in Shard Hills as though he was never a special forces officer.

Confused as he is, Varuna loves having Kerrick there. His life as Shard Hills’s new sheriff is shaping up to be all he’s wanted: a home, a purpose, a family. But when his dark past catches up to him, will Kerrick’s heroic integrity let him forgive and forget…and stay?

I wish that the cover portrays Varuna Das, the Sheriff of Shard Hill better, because that's not him! Ru is described as having pointed ears, snout, and black stripes on his skin.

This free novella feels complete and that's a big deal! I mean, it is a stand-alone book (unlike few of the titles I read from M/M Romance Group Giveaway 2022: Your Book Boyfriend's Boyfriend! event. It has interesting characters! The story is pretty straightforward and at the end it feels finished.

Ru and Kerrick are lovely but this story is written solely from Ru's perspective and I loved his voice. He doesn't feel like he deserves Kerrick. Ru also hides secret, making wrong decisions for right reasons, which comes back to bite him in the ass when he becomes Sheriff of Shard Hill. But he fights for it in the end and he makes his deputies respect him for it. And Kerrick is there to make sure that Ru realizes it.

It has action and romance and tender moments. Yes, this one is a winner, people!

I really enjoyed this! I do wish it had been more than a novella, though...and only because I want more of these MCs. *le sigh*

I liked this, something different. Characters were interesting and felt real.

Narrator is basically a bipedal Zebra with shark teeth and claws. Defintely something different!

I found the sentence structure a little distracting, long sentences with lots of commas. Not sure if the style was an expression of the character or author.

Would be tempted to try another of this verse.

I don't think Jenn Burke and I will ever click.

For some reason I found this book incredibly annoying. But I can see that a lot of people will like this. I guess it could be an intriguing story, it just wasn't for me.

I found myself not caring about the characters one bit.

I feel like I've come in the middle of this built universe where things are going on, things are happening and I'm just jumping in, getting a bit of the story.

🟢 Alien/human
🟣 Size difference
🔵 Age gap - 25 years
🟡 Past hook-up to a relationship
🟠 A mildly criminal plot
🌶️ Some smut, not enough; they're supposedly vers, although we experience only t/b on-page

The story is about Varuna, a human-dimeti hybrid that's over 7ft tall, has white-brown stripes over his skin and sharp teeth. An interesting species and I would've loved to hear more about how he worked for physical compatibility with Kerrick, who's Varuna's long-term hook-up, a human from Earth who's become a space war hero. He's effeminate and in his 20s, so we're also dealing with a significant age gap too. But no, it wasn't particularly mentioned in the story.

What I found interesting is that humans were in a full-blown war with the dimeti race and considering how brutal it was for years, here are Varuna and Kerrick, completely breaking all unwritten rules about them being together and Kerrick even approaching Varuna in the first place, even though he was getting accolades killing guys like him.
Sadly their past wasn't talked about, so we have no idea about anything that went on or what really connects them in the present.

They've both been secretly in love with each other for years, but one day Kerrick simply decides to come live with Varuna, when he's getting to work off-planet. He's staying there and cooking, playing house, but I couldn't get into it even if I wanted to, because I didn't feel any passion here. Nothing that would indicate this relationshis has any kind of feeling or depth.

For the majority of the book the MMC's are dealing with a very heavy plot that took over the story completely. Too many side characters, no particular emphasis on the MMCs and as the book started out in the middle of their story, so it ended abruptly.

I wasn't impressed, but I did like the alien and I did like this world. It was over too soon and it gave me anxiety because there were so many loose ends along with having absolutely no foundation.

Human-alien hybrid Varuna takes on a new job as the sheriff, his first assignment planet side. Before he leaves his old station his old f*** buddy, war hero Kerrick StarCourser, shows up and accompanies him for a stay in his new town. They’ve known each other for years and hooked up every few months when Kerrick happened to be in the area, no strings attached.

I loved all about this story, the characters, the new job, the friendships. I even forgive a couple of plot holes; it was just all together great story telling.

Highly recommended.

Main protagonists: Varuna, 50 to 60, sheriff, human-alien hybrid; Kerrick StarCourser, 25 to 35, war hero; sexuality was never even pointed out – I enjoyed a world where no-one even asked where one stands in the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

A fascinating short with a rich world (though we don't have time to learn all of it) and some truly detailed characters that bring it all to life!

Varuna is a hybrid from an alien race that has been at war with humans for years, a war that has only recently ended. This has made his existence a difficult one with many disliking him simply for what he was born as. One who hasn't ever had any issue is war hero Kerrick, as the two hit it off years ago and maintain a casual relationship whenever Kerrick is on Varuna's station. But now Varuna is taking a job planetside and Kerrick is hanging around, bringing up questions of the future and showing a new life ahead that is unexpected for all.

While there was no way to get the full history of the species and war and everything going on in this short, there was still really good development of the world. At the same time it didn't take away from the story or from the characters themselves, instead complimenting what was going on with pertinent information and intriguing developments. The characters themselves were each going through some difficult times, for they had a future ahead but shadows in the past were holding them back. Figuring things out takes a leap of faith and trust that is difficult, but there is trust and love built up over their years together when they reach for it. Altogether this combined to make a short story that felt well rounded and truly brought to life this alien world and the people upon it building a new life. Great read!

August 2025 reread: Definitely glad I reread. It was an impulse. The characters are lovely. Their confession is still one of the most innovative, impressive, and perhaps confronting… is the word I've read. Ru is so unusual in his design. Ker is fantastic; he is the cover. I kinda hate that this is only a novella. These two deserve more, even if they are tropish in their start point (ie friends with benefits that catch feelings).
I appreciate the number of women in this. Kerrick, Veruna and the villain of the novella are male. Ker loves wearing make-up and is extremely pretty. But most of the supporting cast are female and both main characters were raised with strong female influences. I think it is a strong writing choice.

“Then why would you assume I would be okay with that term when used in the presence of my…my friend?” In an instant, Kerrick was no longer the affable hero the media liked to interview, but the man who’d achieved the rank of major in the United Terran Systems Armed Forces during wartime. His gaze sharpened and hardened, and his posture went ramrod straight as he moved into a parade stance.
“Please apologize.”
Marvin regarded Kerrick with a confused look. “I don’t understand.”
“A-pol-o-gize,” Kerrick said slowly. “It means to say—”
I put my hand on his shoulder. “Kerrick.”
Marvin shook his head. “You fought in a war against…against them. For years. And you’re friends with one. I don’t get it.”
Kerrick bristled. “Maybe it’s because I’m not a racist asshole.”
— Kerrick StarCourser, Marvin and Varuna Das

Warnings: From the author themselves, "contains violence, mentions of past sexual assault, murder, and graphic sexual situations." I also want to add racism and coerced drug use to this.

The Sheriff of Shard Hills follows Sheriff Varuna Das as he arrives in Shard Hills on Omarth to be their new Sheriff, his first planet-side posting after a life on ships and space stations. Varuna is half human, half Dimeti. The Dimeti are the race humans have been at war with for years only recently coming to some sort of cease-fire, now beginning peace talks. Varuna has a sexual relationship (friends with benefits but easy on the friends) with Major Kerrick StarCourser, hero of The Dimeti War and quite a few years younger than Varuna. When Kerrick shows up right before Varuna leaves his previous posting at Garda Station covered in bruises and comes with him to Omarth Varuna is full of doubts and questions but they don't do questions. As well as trying to figure out his sorta relationship with Kerrick, Varuna is facing challenges with his new position. New people, old enemies and questions about his past. It is a bit of a mystery plot that uses people well.

A bit on the characters. I adore Varuna inside and out. Kerrick first though. Kerrick is lovely. He is strong and protective even though Varuna really doesn't need it. Honestly, his caring nature is balanced well by a vicious streak that only comes out in flashes which Varuna indicates is him wearing his title, his whole demeanour changes to reflect his rank and position. He was born and raised in a rough and wild Canada, he's intelligence is insane. I like the way his whole character is presented, it is worth noting that the whole story is told through Varuna's perspective. What we see of Kerrick is somewhat coloured by that. Okay, so Varuna. Let's start by saying he presents mostly with characteristics of a Dimeti not of a human, with one exception... "Of all the things that made me other, this was the one that bothered me the most. Dimeti didn’t have tails. Humans didn’t have tails. But apparently when you mixed the two DNA strands together, they created a tail." (Varuna). He doesn't have a traditional human shape face (including lips), his ears are pointed and his teeth are those of a predator. He keeps himself human and refuses to give into his predator nature. I like his spine, his ability to have the racist comments thrown at him just roll off him and his humanity. Together Kerrick and Varuna bring out the best in each other. Their hook-ups only, oops I caught feelings trope just suits them well.

Some quotes...
As I walked down the corridor, my boots clomping along the station’s variegated metal floor, I decided they were going to be the first things I got rid of. Maybe the shuttle pilot would let me space them. It would be a fitting start to my new life, watching a hated piece of my old one drifting off into space. — These are the opening lines and I really like them. They set the right tone. Give you an idea of Varuna's character and the setting of the book. (Varuna)
The fact he’d forgotten I had an appendage that was so… alien made me feel all warm inside. It meant he wasn’t focused on my otherness.
What a gift.
— This is a moment. There is a strong appeal in the idea of love coming from seeing past the other. And Varuna is so other. I adore Kerrick's ability to see past expectations. (Varuna)
“Mmm, I love that look on you,” he murmured. “Like me worshipping you is your due, and you’ll pounce if I stop.”
My eyes widened. “What?”
“It’s a good look. Trust me.”
— It would be a good look. But it would be horrifying for a man scared of his base nature (not wrongly) to hear. You can hear the way this would be said, the heavy way Kerrick would speak, the lust.
— Between this and the very them proposal that very soon after. It just felt so fitting as a conclusion. I really appreciate the low-level twist that is someone who loves to cook opening a cooking school not a restaurant. How often do we see it jump straight to a restaurant? (Varuna and Kerrick)

This is getting 5 stars for the confession scene alone. It's so well executed, romantic and in that moment absolutely perfect. I've never had the inclination to rate a book on one scene alone but this time I needed to. It was a moment of pure love. I think it likely would have been a 4-star book without that scene. This appealed to me on a level wasn't expecting. The nearest thing I could come to was Manner of Death (2020 Thai drama) vibes. Though less of the enemies-to-lovers (or whatever it was TanBunn had going on) and more opposites attract and friends with benefits. They share a vibe of the main relationship being somewhat secondary to the wider plot; you know you're going to get a resolution to the romantic plot but it isn't the driving force. It was a pleasant change, particularly for a novella where space is at a premium. Nothing about this feels rushed; it feels comfortable and well-paced.

“Kerrick?” His name came out of me on a whisper. I hadn’t seen him for… shit, two years? Two and a half? Not something I held against him, of course. He’d been off saving the galaxy.
“Varuna.” My name left his lips on a sigh, and there were too many emotions carried with it for me to parse them out, one by one. But then I didn’t have to. He staggered across the room into my arms, his face lifted for a kiss.

The Sheriff of Shard Hills is a standalone novella by Jenn Burke. Here's what you can expect from Varuna and Kerrick:

🧡 MM sci-fi romance
🧡 First person single point of view
🧡 Guaranteed happily ever after
🧡 Open door spice
🧡 Enhanced human and human/alien hybrid
🧡 Friends with benefits to lovers

I had the best time reading this cozy 30k novella! I stumbled upon it after devouring Jenn's The Gargoyles of Arrington series, and I was so happy that this one had the same cozy vibes. This is definitely sci-fi as opposed to paranormal, but I thought Jenn did a great job at world-building as the short story progressed. Although we were dropped into an alternate universe much different than our own, I had no issues following and understanding the story. Although this is a romance, Varuna is a cop and there's a suspense element as he untangles a mystery that has followed him to the small town of Shard Hills.

Varuna and Kerrick start out as friends with benefits. Varuna has always had trouble getting close to people due to being half human and half alien. His unusual looks mean he's used to being treated as a pariah. He doesn't understand what the beautiful special forces officer, Major Kerrick StarCourser could want with someone like him. When Kerrick accompanies Varuna to his new post in Shard Hills, Varuna loves having him there even if he's confused as to why he's been away from the military for so long. I loved the cozy moments they had together. This book is a fantastic commentary on how society treats those that are outwardly different. I adored how possessive Kerrick was of Varuna, and I'm so excited they got their happily ever after. I loved their cozy life together, just cooking while Varuna finally has a job he absolutely loves. The townspeople, as well as Varuna's fellow officers, were really awesome. I also appreciated that Jenn wrote Kerrick as a man that enjoyed makeup and dressing more feminine, it added an element of acceptance to the story.

I had a great time with this one, and it's made me not only want to check out more of Jenn's work, but also enjoy more romance with sci-fi in it.

B-

This novella has great bones: interesting characters, decent world building (for the limited space), a short suspense plot, and more. The problem is the short length didn't give any of these great tidbits any room to develop. I really would have enjoyed this same story and character in a full length novel. There is plenty of good stuff the author could expand on without adding anything more (as for as different plot lines, etc.). I'd loved for the story to start on the space station and show Das's early days in security there and how that sets up the suspense story, plus how he and Kerrick met and how their relationship developed. There is so much potential for a strong suspense story and an emotional romance. As it was, it was still entertaining, but left me wanting more.

About the cover: I guess that's Kerrick on the cover, but he's not the POV character, Das is, and Das is a non-human-human hybrid. He has stripes and some fur, and other very non-human features. I guess it was risky to try to make a cover based on the author's descriptions, but this cover makes it seem that Das is human.

This had some great world building and character building right off the bat, without being overwhelming or just infodumping it all. I liked the emotion and feelings that were clear between the two, even if they sucked at actually verbalizing them for a while.

The background plot was intriguing without taking away from the romance as well.

Who’s the dude on the cover though, Varuna is like a giant pointy eared razor toothed snout-owning zebra alien with a cat tail and I don’t think that’s how Kerrick was described either

Not sure why the secondary character is on the cover, with the job title that does not belong to him. Very misleading.

Writing is meh. Characters are meh. I didn't care for anyone or anything in this book and I was further turned off by Varuna's - the actual (half alien) sheriff of Shard Hills - past shenanigans.

The human-alien MC Ru is nothing like the model on the book cover! Otherwise - a decent sci-fi romance with fairly minimal world-building and a 'restrained amount' of M-M sexy action (TG).

So I have very mixed feelings about THE SHERIFF OF SHARD HILLS which is sad because I was enjoying it up until the big revelation about Varuna and that didn't really sit well with me. I'm also not sure why Jenn Burke made Varuna kind of bad at being a cop? He just made a lot of silly mistakes and didn't really seem to know what he was doing even though he'd been a cop for a long time.

I liked Kerrick though I felt he was wildly underdeveloped compared to Varuna. Though I'm not really sure why he felt the need to stay silent during the end separation. I understand he was recovering but he could have at least called Varuna and said, "hey I'm still alive, just getting my life back together" instead of leaving Varuna wondering for 3 months. Overall, this just didn't really work for me.

Content Warning: dirty cop; forced drug use

DNF - PG 9

Why?

Full description of my issues below, but the short answer? Because the first chance the author has to create a sense of place and time and world building, instead she uses it to have a conversation between Varuna and his sister about Kerrick.

Longer answer.

Okay, so, ignoring the fact that our point of view character sounds more like a thirty-something human woman than a male alien, there's some major issues I have early on with the world building.

First, Varuna is a half-human, half-dimeti. Dimeti of this quote: The Dimeti War had lasted twenty years; it was going to take longer than a year or two for the tensions to die down and peace to settle in for real.

Varuna's love interest, which, at the start of the story they are in a friends with benefits relationship and I hate established couples because, you know what? I don't care about them. By page two they are kissing. Anyway, Kerrick, by name, is, and I quote: The hero of the final years of the Dimeti War […].

You think this would be rife with tension - at least outside the relationship? Especially because Varuna doesn't look exactly human. (I can only assume that is Kerrick on the cover, because it certainly isn't someone who is described as having a bone structure that made my nose and mouth jut out into something resembling a snout, but not quite. )

Anyway, let's keep reading and see if there's a reason a half-dimeti has gotten the job of Sheriff so soon after a war with his kind is over.

---

Is this a half sister or a full sister? Yes, this is an important question. Also, which of Varuna's parents was human and which was dimeti?

---

Nevermind. Varuna is barely demiti, just enough to make him look 'exotic' and the product of rape.

Sigh.

Is this indicative of the author's work in sci-fi? This is why not all author's can write sci-fi and why I wish certain author's wouldn't try. (Especially, to be honest, author's that are obviously more competent writing romance and/or contemporary.)

great characters, terrific plot

Rating: 4.5🌈

Jenn Burke is an auto read/buy author for me so I needed to read this novella I hadn’t gotten to before.

Varuna Das, half human half Dimeti, and Major Kerrick StarCourser, human UTS officer, have had an ongoing relationship whenever Kerrick’s path leads him back to Varuna’s space station. Now Varuna is transferring off, ready for a new life and a new job planet side as Sheriff of Shard Hills.

Surprisingly, a bruised Kerrick arrives from his last mission just as Varuna is shipping out, and somehow a companion is acquired.

Kerrick is seen through Varuna’s eyes, famous soldier for his war exploits, fabulous makeup and popularity. Yet he’s a layered figure with his own personality and surprises.

Varuna or Run as Kerrick refers to him, has had a tough life, rising up to the stage he’s in now. Half the species the humans have been warring, a lifetime of racism and hate on his path.

There’s a terrific town and population, great Sheriff’s Office and its staff, as well as a dramatic storyline with a surprising twist or two.

This is one of those books that I wished would have been longer or had a sequel to. I found everything about this engaging and fascinating.

Highly recommended.

M+M Short involving a half human.

Not Ru’s fault that a alien raped his mother and she’d ended up giving birth to the child he became. At just over 8 ft he’d be an impressive specimen. After years in law enforcement on space stations he moves to a Sheriff’s position on an earth-like planet in a small town. The majority of his new colleagues and the town are welcoming. Accompanying him is a human war hero who has been his off and on again paramour--strikingly handsome, of course.

Beyond the pair’s erotic attraction this odd couple truly care for one another, there has been little experience of love in either life.

Enjoyable alien novella

Three and a half stars. This was a mostly sweet, with a couple of gritty moments alien novella.
For such a short story JB really gave us an amazing image of both Varuna and Kerrick and their backgrounds.
The world building was pretty good for such a short story, but for some reason, story felt dry, even with dramatic descriptions.
But that may be my general dislike for Novelas, because they always seem to be lacking and end abruptly.
But I did like this, I loved the descriptions of Varuna’s half breed characteristics. Would love to see more of him..

This was not what I was expecting, and in such a good way. Normally “alien romances” are told from a human perspective, or sometimes from both, but in this book the entire story is told from the perspective of the human/alien hybrid. Varuna is a product of war and rape, and he’s never really known what it is to be accepted, except by Karrick. Typically, as men do, they have a problem expressing themselves and their emotions in words, but over the years they’ve built a deep abiding relationship that gives them both support as they go through trying times and navigate new opportunities.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. It was short but complete with a good HEA. Varuna was an interesting character, fairly well adjusted considering his life. I appreciated that he looked otherworldly and not just another human. If it’s supposed to be him on the cover though, it isn’t an accurate representation at all. I would have liked to know Kerrick a little better but I believed in his feelings. There’s some action, some good side characters, and a few secrets to keep it engrossing.

3.5 stars. Cute sci-fi M/M romance novella, starring a half-alien MC narrator and the hookup-but-maybe-more war hero he definitely is not in love with. Burke packs quite a bit into 100 pages as Varuna faces prejudice, danger, and surprising acceptance in his new role as Sheriff. There's even room for some surprising moral ambiguity. 3.5/5 I wish that we’d had a longer format to be able to spend more time with Ru and Kerrick’s relationship, but I thought the story did a pretty good job of showing that all the feelings had been there but not expressed for years. I didn’t love all of the backstory that was revealed, but it did make people feel flaws and real. I enjoyed the overall acceptance of most people at Shard Hills, and Ru’s chance to accept more of himself and start over.

Nice one! A good mix of sci-fi, romance, action (and bedroom times, yes) with enough depth within the faster pace (and shorter, about 100 pages lenght) to keep you engaged.

It wasn't that special and yet the whole mixture of all the right elements and just well-made building blocks makes it stand out as a quicker yet still solid read.

Recommend.

Great sci fi adventure with romance

The worldbuilding is excellent with a very unexpected twist that totally surprised me. Ru is a wonderful character: likeable, interesting, and different. Kerrick has hidden depths and is fascinating. Yes, there's sex, but the adventure and romance are the important parts of the story.

Gave 5 stars because more not available. A story of second chances and redemption. Well done, it kept me engaged the entire length of the work. So good, I ordered the 1st of another of the author's books on spec, something I've never done before. Not going to reveal spoilers other than to guarantee HEA.
