Opening Line: “Our feelings and emotions describe us. Like a literary potpourri, each one of these stories evokes different emotions.”
Favorite Line: "He has venomous snake hair like Medusa, a half-bull-half-human body like a Minotaur, and worst of all, he falls down from a cliff into the sea like Theasus's Father."
So, I have read other works by Anu Menon before (see my review of her poetry anthology Priceless Moments). And just like with that book, I was very happy with the results of this collection of short stories. "Short stories" is probably not the best way to describe them. I would say the book is more like a collection of whimsical dreams rather than short stories. Whether it be a quick jaunt to find a magical ring or a quick story about the journey of two soulmates, the lyrical stories here paint emotional pictures of mostly happiness and exuberance.
The plot is not a concern as these stories jump all over the globe and are not related to each other in any way. The only thing I can say that might intertwine them is if we were to look at this work as all happening inside the mind of the author. As if each story is a dream they were able to scribble down after waking and losing the reveries forever. I like that idea as it would not only show how imaginative the author is, but it also makes for an interesting re-read and deeper analysis. Characters appear from the pages as they might appear in our sleeping brains, seemingly popping up before our very eyes and entertaining us for a few exhilarating pages. The tales also mimic our dreams in that they don't seem to piggyback off other stories here. They just exist fleetingly and then move on to the next. Like the dreams we have during sleep.
If you are in the mood for a quick read, that keeps the pages turning and the dreamscapes flowing, this is an excellent choice. You can get it on Amazon along with more of Anu's work. In fact, I would recommend doing both this novel and the collection of poems as a rainy afternoon treat for the avid reader. I also love that the author leaves little tidbits of summaries at the end of some of the stories which sum up the read in a tight little package. Almost like Aesop's Fables. Some of my favorites were It's the little details that are vital, When things go wrong, there is always a solution, and Good times and crazy friends make amazing moments. Recurring themes of the book are destiny, soulmates, imagination, family, inclusiveness, dreams, and emotions overall.

Human beings are emotional beings. Humans live with emotions, and it is only the emotions that run the life. The feelings range from good to evil. Out of all the emotions that humans express, an emotion named 'Love' is the most common, natural and precious one. There is love everywhere. It is the love between every being that makes the universe expand and the world progress. To deduce from the vast universe to a single person, the sight itself looks so fascinating, and the most beautiful thing is the feeling that one person develops on the other. In this vast universe, only a single soul comes closer to the heart, and this attraction gives a new direction to life. Apart from the unconditional love that everyone shares, that one particular feeling which makes two people closer to share their lives together is the most beautiful feeling. This specific feeling has no gender bias. It can be between two people, and that is it. Gift of Emotions is a beautiful, exciting and realistic love story. Love stories are always my first choice to read, and though I have been procrastinating, I feel happy and contended. The simple language, honest writing and engaging narration make the story attractive. I must also confess that it has been a while that I read a nice story.

You have everything from neglect, simple pleasures, love, heartbreak, fear, dilemma, mixed emotion – you name and it’s there in one of these stories. "In the experience is the emotion. In the emotion is the gift."
Very rightly said, the book talks about various emotions being evoked by various short stories in the book.
As I begin reading, my first thought was that these stories are too simple and straightforward like borrowed from various instances in every person's life.
But that's actually the gist of it. The author wanted to evoke the emotion of happiness, grief, sympathy, kindness, love, compassion etc through these short stories.
I felt that the narration was a little bland at some points but overall, the concept and the intention with which the book has been curated is very pure and that is duly reflected through this book.
