The snake demon sisters Bai Suzhen and Bai Xiaoqing disguise themselves as humans in order to work as physicians in the city of Hangzhou. But, they struggle to maintain their patients after rumors spread about the two of them being demons, even after a plague starts killing people left and right. Very few humans are sympathetic to demons. One of these open-minded humans is their colleague Xu Xian. The sisters often grapple with the question of whether it's even worthwhile to work so hard to save people who are so prejudiced against them and who even threaten their lives.
I liked both companions. Xiaoqing is hotheaded and impulsive, but I usually agreed with her and admired that she had the guts to express what was on her mind. Xu Xian is modest and sweet, and admires the two sisters for being such good physicians. I played Xiaoqing's route first, but I ended up liking Xu Xian's better because it had more romance and explained more about the backstory.
The story felt a bit rushed, because several times it referenced things that never happened (unless they happened offscreen) such that I felt like there was some mistake. There are also several traps in the answer choices which seemed reasonable based on the available information, but which led to terrible endings that really hurt when I got them.
All in all, it was still a pretty good story for me because I loved the theme of good demons winning the trust (and love) of humans, as well as the two companions.
Chapter 1 - I absolutely loved the world and characters. The plot is a bit basic, but it is flushed out and made enjoyable by the characters and the main characters possible interactions with them. It felt compelling and each choice in this choose-your-own-adventure felt pretty impactful in either character or plot development.
Chapter 2 - I honestly really loved this! The characters continue to develop and the relationships between the characters are solid. I enjoyed taking the Asian mythology and demons to examine the struggles of being a minority and how the story explored systems being built to be prejudiced and unjust due to powerful people and the thinking of whole groups of people. A lot of stories lean more towards "one bad apple" or into "oh no the system is broken for no apparent reason and nobody likes it but here we are". It is refreshing to have a story evenly consider both. Also just love the artwork for this particular story. The costuming was lovely.
