It's Sunday afternoon. My favorite baseball team is the worst in the Major Leagues. I don't want to watch them lose again. Here's a book I picked up for free at my favorite used goods store. So I plowed thru this book (it's only 125 pages) and came to the realization that not all pulp is classic pulp. This mystery from the 1950's is so horribly dated that it takes away from the basic plot; a plot that was weak at best. It's hard to believe that these stories were best sellers. The next time I want to read mystery pulp from the 1950's I'll go with a novel by Brett Halliday or Mickey Spillane.
These are fun, Wheeler is a smart aleck cop who is sent for, so he could go after a fat cat that had the city council and the police running scared and the DA in his pocket. He does this the only way he knows how, straight ahead and damn the consequences. After being framed for a rape and a murder he keeps plugging away, but now he is mad.
Highly recommend, Wheeler is a fun character and the story is fast paced and keeps your interest.
