I always put it in the net...

As the new guy on the Rochester Riot, I’m used to dealing with haters and trolls.

My opponents come after me fast and hard, while fair weather fans play armchair quarterback about my talent or lack thereof.

But they never mention how I look – they never ridicule me for my body.

I don’t know what it’s like to be called fat, ugly, disgusting, even… worthless.

When I meet the voluptuous Phoebe at a Riot athletic wear event, her haunted eyes tell me she’s been bullied in the past.

She can’t believe that my body tightens and my heart thumps whenever I’m around her.

I’m a lonely giant of a man, so her size is one of the things I love most, especially those sweet curves that make my mouth water.

So when a thug targets her again for her weight – he dares me to cross the line.

You see, I already consider Phoebe mine and what belongs to me… I protect that with my life.

And after I lay him flat, I’ll lay her bare.

After 26 years in Corporate leadership at a Fortune 500, I discovered people within the organization lacked integrity. I’d always known deep in my soul that I was trying to fit a square peg in to a round hole since I’m the typical creative type. I miss my staff but I don’t miss the corporate world. It’s been said that the Universe will let you know if something isn’t right for you. The first time, it will hit you with a pebble. Then a brick. Then a boulder. Let’s just say that I got flattened. When my fifteen pound toy dog, Nigel, was threatened, I knew it was time to say goodbye.
It’s true.
Here’s what I found within the first thirty days of being free. Writing stories from my heart that readers love means more to me than working myself in to an early grave for people who only care about their bottom line.
My heart has never been more full and my soul has never been more satisfied.
I’ve never worked so hard in my life but it doesn’t even feel like work. It’s worth it. All of it. Because it’s about the joy that’s found within the journey. The highs and the lows because I get to write stories for all of you.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading, enjoying and recommending the stories that I write. When you share my work with others, nothing is more rewarding. Your word of mouth is my very best friend … that, and your reviews. There is nothing more important to me than all of you.

This is not a book for the light of heart or for those that are triggered easily. This is a book for those of us that live a truth that most of the rest of us ignore. This book says exactly what the rest of us have been trying to say for years and haven't been heard. And it is the hope of us that the rest of the world will read this and change themselves for the better.

Any of us that have lived through any kind of trauma in their life will completely root for Phoebe. She is broken beyond belief, shattered on the best of days and trying desperately to glue her life back together on the worst of days. We all feel this and know the heartache and the pain. You have something that happens to you and for better or for worse it changes you. Inside and out. Mentally, physically, even sometimes spiritually. You are no longer the self that you were. You are something else that someone who thought they knew better than you, made you. And it is your job to try and find some semblance of who you once were. The only problem is that you can't. No matter how hard you try, the old self just doesn't fit anymore. Why? Because change is painful, and it distorts how you see yourself and how others also see you.

Phoebe is brave, self-less, beautiful inside and out, intelligent, witty, and fun to be around. But does she see or believe any of this? No. Why? Because of the trauma that happened to her. In the book you learn what a terrible thing it was. Could it have been possibly avoided? Of course. We all make choices and sometimes our choices cause us trauma just as much as the person who did it to us did.

We have all been there. Someone comes into our life and tells us how wonderful they think we are but we never believe it. Why? Because we are broken. And sometimes it's you yourself that ends up fixing this and sometimes it's someone else that has the ability to show you how to fix it. We never know until it's time to be fixed.

Enter into the book, Silas. He is a rare guy. Doesn't mind going slow, wants Phoebe with a passion that most will never ever experience in a lifetime, and wants her just for her. Does Phoebe believe this? Would you?

What transpires in this book is a tale like none other of the emotional journey between two hearts who fight for themselves and for each other. And doesn't understand that when two hearts come together, it may not be deemed pretty because of the pain that has changed them, but in the end becomes beautiful because of forging of the two hearts together.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a little rough in spots to read because of things that I have personally been through. However, that being said, what is in this book has been needing to have been said for a long time now. I cheered, I grimaced, I got angry, I wanted to throw this book at some points, and I always wanted to hold it to my chest and celebrate.

I believe that everyone who reads this book will go on a different journey. It's going to hurt. Change always does. But I believe that the person reading it comes out better on the other end. Can you read this book and just be able to enjoy it as a book? Absolutely. So do not be deterred by my words in this review to keep you from reading it.

Personally, what Silas does to the SOB that hurt Phoebe was awesome. I enjoyed the heck out of that. What a great book this was to read, and I enjoyed the ever loving heck out of it. I absolutely recommend this book. Absolutely loved it.

I really enjoyed this romance. It offers a super swoon worthy hero and a heroine that I could easily relate to. The chemistry between Silas and Phoebe was undeniable and the sparks flew freely. The story grabbed and kept me engaged and invested. A smart combination of heart, emotion, poignancy, drama, humor, sweetness, angst and painful baggage is potent, powerful and incredibly moving. It is a definite heart tugger, all the feels read. I am posting an impartial, independent review.

To all of my plus size girls out there, this is the love story for you. We all need a little Silas in our lives. A Hot, swoon worthy hunk of a man with a heart of Gold. A Heart that knows a good thing when he sees her. Phoebe could be any of us. Restricted by a size shaming society and convinced that she is unworthy by the scrutiny of size shaming scoundrels. With Silas’ unconditional love and burning desire for all things Phoebe, his support helps Phoebe heal and embrace self love.

The Net (Rochester Riot Book 6) is the first book that I have read by Colleen Charles. I delved into this story knowing that it was the sixth book in the series and that I would miss some backstory that would have been covered in the previous books, however I was intrigued by the blurb and ploughed ahead.

Firstly, even though I hadn’t read the other books in the series I was able to read this story easily without feeling like I was missing any major plot points. If anything, the few things mentioned made me more curious to read the series and learn more about the other characters. I also love a good sports romance, particularly hockey, so that of course was another bonus.

I thought the storyline was good, the grammar, flow, editing, etc were all well executed, however I had trouble connecting to the FMC. Being a chubby girl myself, I usually relate to plus sized female characters, however Phoebe started driving me crazy! It seemed like ALL her thoughts and feelings revolved around her size and what happened in her past and yet she wouldn’t discuss it with anyone. Unfortunately, I believe this was also to the detriment of the story – because her thoughts were frequently on her size and fears, she didn’t seem to focus on Silas which meant I didn’t really feel any chemistry between the two main characters.

I thought Silas was brilliant; the whole book boyfriend package; hot, aware, loyal, patient, understanding, romantic. You could feel his yearning for Phoebe, unfortunately, it wasn’t reciprocated as she was too busy in her own head. I’m all for body positivity and seeing plus sized women taking centre stage, however to me it just felt like this book focused too much on her mental anguish and fears (and I never thought I’d say that). There were some great points mentioned and I believe it could give some ‘pretty privileged’ people some insight on what plus sized people deal with regularly which I thought was great.

Overall, I did enjoy the story and the premise was great. The HEA was really well done and I believe a lot of people will really enjoy this sports romance.

This is one of the most beautiful and unexpected reads of 2022 for me. I recently read a few NYT list books with curvy female lead characters but wow - Phoebe just took those half-character truths and brought them to life in spectacular colour and joy. Silas is the type of lead character you also love - because he is his own person. He has his own mind, own strengths and beliefs and he's just a solid, stand-up person. I am keeping this book on my forever shelf.

If you want a sugary-sweet romance where the hero helps the heroine overcome her body and self-esteem issues, this is for you.

Unfortunately, it just didn't work for me. I'm not against diving into issues of body image and self-esteem or having diverse body representation (in fact, I'm all for it!). But the way that this was written reminded me a lot of that infamous line from the movie Tall Girl, "You think your life is hard? I'm a high school junior who wears size 13 nikes." I get that the heroine had trauma, but man, do we have to talk about her weight in every single part of her life? She has great friends, runs a successful company that is basically her dream job with said best friends, and has had her crush pining over her for the last year. Things really aren't looking too bad for her.

Also, the hero just seemed really unrealistic to me. Too sweet (and in many ways, too immature? His sister and mom live with him and he seems to act like a sullen teenager for half of this book).

I desperately wanted to love this book, but it seemed to fall a but flat for me. The synopsis had me expecting something a little more gripping than the slow moving story I read. As far as characters go I loved Silas. He was a big sweet teddy bear, with just the right amount of alpha and protective goodness. Poor Phoebe just seemed miserable. Between the jealousy towards her thinner married friends and her distrust of Silas for no good reason, she just couldn't seem to get out of her own head. Being overweight myself, it's nice seeing the curvy ladies get the guy, but I wish her weight wasn't the main point of the entire book. I did enjoy the writing style and the supporting characters were well written as well.

Okay, I really did enjoy this book for the most part. As a curvy girl, I understood the main female character and what criticisms she lamented about the entire book. I'm a size 18, I get it. HOWEVER - being a curvy girl who dealt with rejection and whatnot as well, I know how to let the past be the past. I am happy that Phoebe was finally able to find her peace. We all struggle with it. I even had a cousin who was rail thin who got picked on. It's not your size that is the issue, it's people and their cold hearts that are the problem.

This book was, for the most part, very body positive and inclusive. I LOVED that Silas didn't give a hoot what size she was - he actually loved her BECAUSE she was curvy. It was his preference and hey, I get it, we are snuggly and fun. (so are thin women too! all women who want to be snuggly are indeed snuggly!) I like that he tried so hard to make her comfortable and happy. He loved her before she ever gave him the time of day and I found it so endearing. It also made me want to throttle her 90% of the time because she couldn't see it. Silas is a saint!

The book characters are all fun. I have read a few of the other books in this series on Kindle Unlimited and I can't wait to read Madison's story in the spin-off series that is mentioned at the end of this book. I loved Madison's confidence and beauty. She reminds me of me (that sounded narcissistic but I didn't mean it that way). What I mean is, she grew from all those people putting her down and learned to love the skin she's in. That is what I have done and darlin' it's taken me over 20 years to get there. I have been bigger most of my life, since puberty tanked my metabolism. I'm 27 now and just recently since having my daughter 6 years ago did I truly learn that I am important, worthy, and beautiful. Madison is written as younger than me and she already has that confidence.

This book centers around Phoebe finding that confidence. It's a hard journey with a lot of tears as we read about in this book BUT, the end result is worth it! It's all part of the journey!

Thank you to Colleen for writing his book and it's body positivity theme! Us bigger girls appreciate you highlighting the struggle and showing that there is a way to see the light at the end of the tunnel!!!

Silas McKay is the goofiest, sexiest, kindest, and most protective MMC I’ve ever met and I’ve never wished harder for a fictional character to be a real person. He’s basically a golden retriever in human form and I absolutely adore him to bits. Unfortunately, however, in the context of the book, I kind of needed him to be just a little less perfect. Why? He was so perfect that Phoebe could not compare and so I really struggled to like Phoebe as a character.

First though, let me make it clear that this book is ALL about the curvy girl trope and how that affects people. I’ve read other “curvy girl” romances and though it was still an important aspect of the stories, the plots didn’t solely revolve around it like it does for this book. Definitely make sure to read the author’s foreword before reading.

So yes, Phoebe is a big girl and she struggles all throughout the book with her self-confidence. Silas is relentless and he is the one who really pushes for their relationship; Phoebe just goes along with it and pretty much every encounter ends with her pushing Silas away. It got very old, very fast. Again, though I love Silas, in terms of how he plays into the story, I wish he had messed up somehow early on because he was so understanding and thoughtful that Phoebe started to come off as insensitive and ungrateful in comparison. As one of the characters says, “Just how much pushing away do you think a good man like him can take?”

Huge kudos to the author though because the ending. was. perfect.

Obviously not going to give spoilers but she brought everything together beautifully and I was finally able to get behind Phoebe’s character. It was exactly what I needed and when I finally finished the book, I was really happy with Phoebe and Silas’s HEA.

Definitely worth the read and again, I have to give the author credit because she managed to change my mind about Phoebe and I definitely didn’t think that was possible. On another note, this book was part of a series and the couples from previous books have some nice “screen time” in this one, so if you’ve read the earlier ones I think you’ll enjoy their little appearances here.

Things to note: abuse (physical, emotional, sexual), bullying, general violence

4.5

“The Net” is the 6th book in the ‘Rochester Riot’ series by Colleen Charles. They are sports romances, each one featuring a member of a NHL hockey team. The books are written so they can each be read as a standalone.

Silas is almost too good to be true. He’s a handsome and talented professional hockey player, loves his family, is good to his friends, and is about the nicest human being you could ever meet. He’s jovial and a harmless flirt. Silas has been interested in Phoebe since the very first time he saw her, but she won’t even give him the time of day. In fact, she goes out of her way to continually reject and rebuff him. Phoebe is a plus-sized woman. The biggest burden in her life isn’t her weight though, it’s the emotional damage she carries from years and years of being subjected to derision, taunting, exclusion and even worse because of her size. The worst trauma by far happened when she was in college, and it was because of a handsome hockey player. When Silas flirts with her, all of her shields are up and locked firmly into place against him. Even as he repeatedly demonstrates his sincerity, she is terrified of trusting him.

I thought this book was well done, although at times it got a bit repetitive with all of the reiteration about painful cruelty and systemic negativity Phoebe has experienced because of her weight. However, the issue was so important I could understand the need to really stress the overwhelming nature of it. There are secondary characters who add a lot to the story, especially Silas’ sister Madison. Other key secondary characters in the story you’ll recognize if you’re familiar with the series already. When Phoebe takes a chance on trusting Silas, the chemistry between them is wonderful. The ending of the story is terrifically satisfying. There are some great, lighthearted moments to balance out some of the much more painful subject matter, I thought the author did a commendable job addressing a type of discrimination that society ignores too often, while still prioritizing the love story of Silas and Phoebe.

Wow!! What an amazing romance that encompasses so many emotions! I smiled, I laughed, I cried, my heart broke, and then everything came together in a beautiful conclusion. The characters in this book are fantastic! Silas and Phoebe are written with so much heart that you will fall in love with them and root for them from the very beginning. Even their friends are family are incredible characters. They are loving, supportive, and sometimes the kick in the butt that’s needed.

Phoebe is a bbw with a heartbreaking past. The way that she has been treated and the self doubt that is has caused will break your heart. Hopefully it also open the eyes and minds of readers to be careful even subconsciously judging people. We need to be loving to everyone we encounter because we don’t know their journey and their past.

Silas is fantastic!! He’s loving, patient, a little pushy but he does so from a place of love. He is drawn to Phoebe and wants a chance with her but he’s going to have to bring down her walls and open her heart first. His pursuit of her heart and her slow reception of his efforts made this book one of my absolute favorites! Flirtations, scavenger hunts, dates with the sweetest intentions that fall flat constantly, love languages, sweet and steamy moments of passion, and a funny yet beautiful ending.

No one writes banter like Colleen Charles! The funny getting to know you banter with movie quotes and funny dances. The inside joke banter of people who know and understand each other. The encouraging banter of a friend pushing another to help them be better and feel better. The interactions between characters in this book alone made this a five star read for me. Add in the beautiful story of a woman overcoming the bullying of her past to find self love and the happiness that she deserve, and it makes me wish I could give this book more stars. Do yourself a favor and read this book today! I received a review copy of this book and I chose to write a voluntary review.

Hockey romances definitely have a soft spot in my heart! This one involves a hockey star and a non-standard sized woman - which is incredibly refreshing!

Phoebe works for her friend's activewear clothing company and has been trying to get her friend to launch a size-inclusive line within that company. She is the last un-partnered up member of her gal pals - and she feels that is primarily due to her clothing size. Phoebe was traumatized during her college years by a college hockey player - an event that started as consensual but ended as a sexual assault. Since that time, she hasn't let anyone get close to her. Although she professes to be a confident fat woman, it is very clear that insider her head she's really been beaten down by a world that loves thin. Phoebe's experiences are something many women will identify with and have experienced.

Silas is a hockey star - but also a very sweet, family oriented guy. He's the real deal when it comes to being a nice guy. He's been trying to get Phoebe to see him in a romantic light for a long time.

Most of the book is focused on Phoebe opening up her heart to trust Silas and take a chance on love with him. But also - about truly accepting herself and finding her inner power again.

So here's the thing...as much as I liked this story, there were a few points that really pushed my buttons. There were a few moments in the story that were very much not queer friendly and others that were not as inclusive as they should have been to others - in particular while they embraced differences like being an amputee or downs syndrome - there were basically no people of color represented at all. This surprised me a lot because of the heroine being so focused inclusivity of fashion. I also wanted Phoebe and Silas to just talk. The scavenger hunts were super cute - but might have been better if they did them together.

Overall - I enjoyed it - but it wasn't love for me.

This was a curvy gal sports romance.

This book had me reliving too much of my younger years. The way Phoebe and Madison are treated is all too true for women who happen to be larger than average. I found myself in tears and getting angry all over again. If just one average size person gets what these characters go through the world will be a better place.

Phoebe Reinhart is a curvy gal who works with/for her friend Mina at an athletic wear company. After a year of growth the company is doing very well and Phoebe is given the go ahead to pursue her line of plus size athletic wear. She suffered a horrible trauma in college which colors how she sees all men especially hockey players. She has spent ten years in therapy trying to learn to get past the trauma but it is still a huge factor in her dating life.

Silas McKay is the hottest player on the Rochester Riot professional hockey team. He is a big flirt, but the sweetest nicest guy. His sister and mother are plus size so he does not have any preconceived prejudices against her body type. He has had a crush on Phoebe for over a year when he first met her. She has shot him down continuously. At the team banquet he convinces her to dance with him but gets shot down again when she prefers to take an Uber home than accept a ride from him.

When he learns she is looking for a plus size model he brings his sister Madison to meet her at the office. Phoebe hires Madison and the two hit it off and become friends. Madison helps set Silas up with Phoebe and they start dating. Phoebe's emotional baggage make for rough going and causes them to break up for a while before they get their HEA.

It has been a long time since I related with a character as much as I did Phoebe. Phoebe is a driven woman that has a successful business that she shares with her friends. She has an active social life, great friends, and a supportive family. But she does not have a partner or love. And she doesn't think she will, so she doesn't plan for it. Phoebe is a plus sized woman and struggles to find where she fits into her friend group and the world. There have been others in her past that ridicule and treat her life as a second class citizen, so she pushes people away.
Friends, Phoebe did not plan for Silas. Silas is a professional hockey player for the MN Riot. He is in the same friend group as Phoebe and he has his sights set on her. This woman is wife material and he cannot get her out of his mind. He also cannot figure out what he says or does that keeps pushing her further away from him. This man is so patient and genuine. He has a sister that is plus sized and when he realizes the way the world treats them he is appalled. I love how Silas did not give up, and he wasn’t stalkerish about it but he made it known that he wanted Phoebe and that she was the sexiest woman in the world in his eyes.
When Phoebe's past makes an unwelcome appearance it also reaffirms who’s side Silas is on. How Colleen Charles played this relationship out was perfection. Silas had to work for Phoebe and he did not mind one single bit. These two have some serious chemistry and stellar banter. If you like a romance with a strong friend group, hot hockey players, and real bodied heroine’s this book is for you. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Okay, where can I find a guy like Silas? Caring, funny, protective and a big hockey player is exactly what I’m looking for. “The Net” is a heartfelt hockey romance about being able to love yourself before you can love someone else.

Silas has been flirting with Phoebe for the better part of a year but she will not give him the time of day. Phoebe is a beautiful, plus size curvy woman and she thinks Silas only wants her for one thing. Phoebe has some body image issues from a very traumatic experience from when she was in college. But being the great guy he is, Silas slowly works on breaking down the wall she’s built around herself and proving that she is indeed wife material for him.

Silas is just a golden retriever, cinnamon roll kind of guy who you instantly want to be friends with. His personality and charm won me over quickly and I loved who he was a hockey player and a person. It did take me a minute to like Phoebe. I loved having the plus sized representation in a book that was one of the main focuses of the story. But man, she was her number one enemy for a lot of the book. Her traumatic experience was really hard to read and probably something a lot of plus sized women fear will happen to them. Thank goodness for Madison, Silas’s sister, was is in this story. Her confidence in herself was screaming through the pages and I loved her. The last few chapters were perfect and a great way to wrap up Phoebe’s past so she could move on.

Phoebe & Silas
*
A scavenger hunt is what everyone needs in their relationship.
*
Phoebe is a plus size woman who was severely bullied in the past so now she doesn't trust men. Especially athletes. For a while whatever she was feeling I felt too and it resonated with me. After a while of putting herself down and repeating how she's too fat for Silas and how he doesn't actually like her but is just playing with her (even though he pursued her for almost a year and made his intentions clear), I was waiting for something to change in the storyline. Only when she sees he has a plus size sister that he supports she considers his intentions might be real – trusting his teammates and her friends clearly wasn't enough. At this point I prefered his POV.
Silas is an adorable big softie. He likes Phoebe from the start and is persistent with her. He thinks she might be the one. He really is a man who will fight for your honor. I LOVED him! He uses a lot of puns and drinks sugary coffee. A funny and loving hunk of a man who is not afraid to shed a tear. He doesn't have something up his sleeve but sure does in his pants.
Thankfully the book took a nice turn toward the end and I loved seeing Phoebe being confident and not too bothered with her body and her past. I do wish there was more focus on their relationship and not mostly on her and her fears.

Silas has a problem he's completely into Phoebe but she won't give him the time of day he just doesn't understand but he won't give up on them being together. Phoebe thinks Silas is like allot of guys that chase girls like her then pretend they don't exist she soon realizes that Silas maybe different but life is creul because her ugly past plays for Silas opposing team things are about to get ugly on the ice. Phoebe thinks she has one choice to make maybe she's wrong.

This is a Hockey Romance with some tuff issues covered and the author wrote Silas character beautifully hes kind understanding and funny he also cares and you instantly love him Phoebe on the other hand is hard to understand she has walls she runs from love and has allot of fear everyone deals with trauma differently but at times I really felt bad for Silas character Phoebe pushes and pulls allot when it comes to there relationship. So did I like Phoebe character not at first then by the end of the book I liked her more especially when she stood up for herself.

This book has the feels and the tears and touches on a sensitive topic body image and how some people are really unkind and just ugly. I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest review.

I didn't dislike this book by any means, but the synopsis was definitely better than the novel itself. The beginning of the story had a lot of promise. I really liked Silas. He was dogged in his pursuit of Phoebe and just so sweet and thoughtful. He was definitely the strong alpha yet giant teddy bear that he was promised to be. Phoebe, on the other hand, was slightly less likable. Her unending questioning of Silas, despite him proving himself to her numerous times, grew old. Nonetheless, they had an adorable romance, and I enjoyed how passionate Silas was about making Phoebe his wife.

The side characters were charming, especially Madison. However, the constant--and I do mean constant--references to Phoebe's weight, fat phobia, etc. dragged down the pace of the book. I completely understand that it was a big part of Phoebe's insecurities, but you can only mention the same thing so many times before it becomes tiresome. The last half of the story was particularly slow, and I found myself skimming in an effort to finish.

Overall, this was an enjoyable, sweet tale but one with a pretty slow pace. I would only recommend it to those desperate for sports romances or emotionally damaged heroines.

*I received an ARC of this novel. This is my complete and honest review.*

A powerful, well written storyline! Phoebe is haunted and Carrie’s the trauma of a horrific event from ten years ago. She is broken beyond belief and views the world through a s warped and skewed perspective which keeps her from experiencing life in many ways. She keeps herself hidden as much as possible, purposely deflecting attention away from herself.

Silas is a sexy, talented NHL player and best friends with Phoebe’s best friend’s husband. He has been trying to get Phoebe to give him a chance since he first saw her. She pushes him away and won’t consider his interest as serious.

The introduction of his sister Madison who is a confident, aspiring plus-size model who interviews for the new line Phoebe is launching makes her reconsider Silas’ interest. Their love story is fraught with misunderstandings, unintentional triggers and a few steps backwards. Silas is willing to move at a snail’s pace for Phoebe.

Their eventual HEA is so heartwarming for all the emotional trauma Phoebe had to overcome and Silas’ willingness to give the woman he lives the time and space to find her inner strength.

Phoebe is a BBW who is pursuing her plus-sized fashion line with her friends. Phoebe sees herself as fat, not just fluffy or plus-sized. She has experienced horrendous fat-shaming and humiliation. Her self-image is poor, and twists her views of everything and everyone in her life. Although she has been in therapy, it doesn’t seem to have had much effect. Silas is a huge bear of a NFL hockey player, who has great relationships with his over-weight sister and with his single Mom. Silas and Phoebe have friends in common. As they spent time with the mutual friends, Silas has fallen for Phoebe. He has been flirting and trying to date her, but Phoebe’s barriers were an obstacle. This book is weighted heavily towards social commentary about weight traumas, rudeness, bullying and weight prejudice, rather than just being a romance story with a BBW character. There are some well-written sex and hockey scenes, great secondary characters, romantic moments and a sweet HEA. Ultimately, I could only give this book three stars because Phoebe’s struggles were so depressing. Not what I enjoy in a romance book, although other readers may find it enlightening. I have a soft spot for hockey romance and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Net.
Phoebe is a plus size heroine who has suffered a major trauma during her college years and she has to endure all the nasty comments daily about her figure from people who think that she needs to change. As a person whose body has changed a alot during the last ten years I couldn't relate more to the words of Phoebe:

"We don't care if you like what you see. We don't care if you think we're pretty. We love ourselves and if you don't like it, keep walking."

And then there is Silas who wants Phoebe as she is. He doesn't want to change her, he accepts her 100% and he just wants to be part of her life. Phoebe is not ready...years of insecurities make her doubt Silas and her heart.

I kept reading this book thinking that body shaming is real and painful. It is so easy to comment on somebody's figure but not Silas. He treats Phoebe with empathy and understanding, ready to support her in every step. What a great couple!

This is the sixth book in this incredible series, and this is Silas and Phoebe’s journey. Silas is the new Rochester Riot player, and from the moment he sees Phoebe and a Riot athletic wear event, he wants her with a passion. Phoebe is broken and haunted by trauma, and she is trying to get her life back on track, and as a curvy girl she does not think she is worthy of being loved. Silas has a huge heart, and he is protective and determined to convince Phoebe to take a chance on them and convince her to see herself through his eyes to the brave, selfless, and beautiful woman that she is. The chemistry between these two is combustible and undeniable, and they complement each other perfectly. This is a beautifully written emotional roller coaster, with drama, humor, witty banter, angst, healing, passion, and love, which leads to a heartfelt and poignant love story. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Phoebe was hurt by a frat boy in college and hasn’t wanted to let any man near her heart since. She knows she’s curvy and not the idea hockey girlfriend, so when local hockey star, Silas, starts to flirt with her, she tries to shut him down immediately. He doesn’t give up and Phoebe finds herself falling for him, but she refuses to fall all the way. Silas is determined to wife her up and he usually gets what he wants if he puts in the effort.

The Net is a steamy romantic comedy, the sixth installment in the Rochester Riot series. I haven’t read any others in this series (but I plan to now) prior to this one and I didn’t find any confusion or missing backstory, so it can be read as a stand alone. I feel like the main point of this novel was body positivity and I was impressed at how it was handled by the author, still providing spicy, sexy scenes along with the theme of accepting you can be beautiful at any size. Phoebe and Silas both showed great character growth and personal development. I loved their sweet romance!

What an amazing story right here, it will pull at your heartstrings while sending an important message! Great job by this author in putting together a story that touches on a huge topic and scoring a hat trick with it! 5 amazing stars for this one!
Galena has always battled with her body, and comments that have hurt her. Sure she's curvy, but when one person shamed her into feeling so low about herself, she refuses to put her self out there again. So when Silas starts paying extra attention to her, she's afraid he'll be just like the one that hurt her so long ago.
Silas has craved Galena since the first time he saw her, and he wants her bad. She's closed off and rebuffs his advances at every chance. He needs her to let her walls down so he can get in, but how can he do that when he's not sure why she is the way she is.
Sit back and enjoy their story as it unfolds, cheer on Galena, and swoon over Silas, as you get to know these amazing characters!

Silas has been pining on Phoebe for almost a year now. He’s a hot as sin hockey player, she’s a plus size girl that works with an athletic clothing company. He’s a huge flirt and doesn’t hide his feelings towards Phoebe, she doesn’t believe he’s being serious and dismisses him every single time.
Silas is as patient as they come and keeps trying to make Phoebe see that he’s serious about her but Phoebe has been burned in the past. Will they be able to find their HEA?
Silas, bless his heart, he knew from the get go that Phoebe was it for him. Maybe he went in too hard but he was honest the entire time. I saw where Phoebe was coming from, being hurt in the past but it wasn’t Silas’ fault and he was the one paying for it.
I say this time and time again, when a main character messes up big time I expect them to grovel and Phoebe delivered! I love how she was able to face her demons and work on herself so she could be worthy of Silas’ love.

Silas is an amazing man with a heart of gold, even though he doesn't really understand what Phoebe has been through or the amount of damage it caused her. I also love his sister, Madison. She has an amazing personality and helps them both so much. There was a slight downfall with the story with it's timeline- she's been dealing with the trauma from an ex for a decade (and occasionally says over a decade)… trauma that happened when he was a senior in college and the ex is two years below him (it doesn't say if she's the same age or not)… but at one point it says that Silas was 22 when the incident happened, while another point says it's just 30 (or almost 30, I forget which… but either way means the incident wasn't ten years ago). But I tend to be nitpicky about timelines, it doesn't really make much difference to the story and how great it is. And how empowering her story can be in the end.

This is the greatest story I've ever read. And that's saying a lot. I enjoy Colleen's books because they're more relatable than a lot of others. I love her sense of humor and the heart she writes into her stories. But this one is on a whole new level. This one speaks to the soul. Having been in Phoebe's place when I was younger, the one that was ok to sleep with but not being seen in public with, this one hits all the feels. The sadness, the fear, the anger. But Phoebe loved herself and respected herself more than I did, even with all the self denials about deserving to be loved and accepted. People are so mean and soulless in today's society. So hateful, especially the trolls hiding behind computers. I hope this story finds and helps the ones who need it. Colleen, you are a GODDESS and don't you ever forget it.

Silas is a professional hockey player who has been attracted to Phoebe for a while however all his attempts to pursue her have been unsuccessful, but he continues to try and show her with everything he does and says that he wants her just the way she is.

Phoebe has been belittled her entire life because of her plus size and she doesn’t know what a sexy athlete would want with her but based on her past she is sure that it isn’t good which makes her reluctant to trust him and let him into her life.

Silas is swoony as he sees Phoebe for the amazing woman she is and not her size while Phoebe has been conditioned to believe that her size is all that matters. He is so patient and understanding as he helps Phoebe heal from the past and regain her self-confidence to become the woman she was destined to be.

I don't normally read this author but the blurb intrigued me enough to give it a try. My initial feelings were very positive. I liked both Silas and Phoebe as individuals and together they meshed well. But then it just kind of lost momentum for me. Yes, Phoebe is a larger woman (not that Silas cared) but her constant distrust of Silas and actively pushing him away, and almost every contact we have with Phoebe being filled with references to her weight soon dragged me down. Also, Silas has liked Phoebe for a year before this book has even started and in all this time she treats him as badly as she does has me asking - when does gentle and caring just become doormat? I loved that it had Phoebe being successful in her career and the addition of Madison as a side character brought some much needed lightness but by the end I didn't much like either character.
