If you're in your histrom era, I have some of those! The Bartholomew series follows the lives and loves of four siblings in Victorian London. Very charming, 2 out of 5 spicy peppers, and dual 1st person POV (don't report me to the HR police 😉

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR P*RN WITH NO PLOT, LOOK NO FURTHER 😅
Yeah. That's basically the gist of this book. Definitely not for me - neither the characters not the story captured my attention, so that's a bit of a bust.
👎 What I Disliked 👎
Porn: So, I love a good smut scene. I love steamy, historical romance. But I do need for there to be more than just smut. Either some good character development, some romance or some engaging plot. This book had none of that, just a lot of sex. It was, in my opinion, the entirety of Emery and Augie's relationship.
Emery: I was actually not against Emery, she was a pretty fun character at times. What bothered me was how she was described versus how she actually behaved. Because those two things did not correspond. Especially when it comes to crying. Early earn we are told, that Emery doesn't cry - hasn't cried since she was 11 years old. And yet, she cries no less than FOUR TIMES during the duration of this book. That just really bothered me...
Plot: I am a big fan of fake dating and friends to lovers tropes. So this book should have been amazing for me. But here's the thing. Those two things are hardly even present in the story. They don't play a role. There's no fake dating - they get engaged and they get married without any conflict. There's no friends to lovers, because they're lovers pretty much the whole way through anyway, so the friendship doesn't really matter. For me, both these tropes are supposed to be SLOW BURNS. But not in this book. Here, it's "rip your clothes off instantly". And I was not a fan.
Telling: Yeah, the characters just didn't hit home for me, mainly because there are more described than anything else. Too much telling, not enough showing.
Conflict: Any good book must have at least one central conflict for the characters to overcome. But try as I may, I just couldn't feel it here. Sure, there was the hint of a conflict between Augie and Emery, but it just felt so half-assed, as if the author really didn't want it to be there, but was simply going through the motions out of a sense of obligation. It just didn't feel real of high-stakes at all. And that's where I lose interest.
Cover: Honestly, I am not hating the cover. The cover is amazing! But it doesn't fit this book, in my opinion. The cover actually led me to believe that this was a YA novel. So you can imagine my surprise at the pornographic content. If the cover had been on a book indented for a younger audience, I would have been all for it. But it didn't work for this particular book.

This is Laney Hatcher’s second release, after her debut earlier this month, and it felt like I was reading something written by a veteran of the historical romance genre. If you’re new to historical romance and want to try the genre, this is a great one to start with. I LOVED this book and couldn’t put it down! I am officially a fan of hers and will read anything she writes. Also, how cute is this cover designed by Blythe Russo?!
This was such a sweet, funny, slow burn romance, with just the right amount of heat. They’re best friends who only want what’s best for each other.
I loved the flirtatious and witty banter that only best friends, who are obviously and obliviously in love with each other, could dish out. Augustus is so gone for Emery, it leads to some truly swoony moments.
I wanted to knock some sense into both of them because we know how in love they are with each other. We just want them to tell each other!
The book was also a great reminder to always be yourself.
I fell in love with Emery and Augustus. I hope we get to see more of them throughout the series. I closed the book with a full heart and would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

wish it could’ve been better
This was such a disappointment! It looked so cute and fun, but it was tiresome, dreary, depressing and annoying!
1. The first time the hero and heroine are physically intimate (orally, that is) isn’t shown—the author just skips right over that initiation. She literally fast forwards their relationship by a couple weeks, right as it heats up, and we end up where the hero has been touching and kissing the heroine for weeks, but we dont get to see their reactions or feelings to this experience for the first time. We go from the hero and heroine kiss for the first time to the hero has been learning and discovering and pleasuring the heroine. But we see none of it!
What made this even more annoying was that the author spent LOTS of time on the day to day minutia of the characters BEFORE she decided to fast forward all the good bits.
2. Pretty much every dreary and miserable cultish cliche you get from the unhinged zealots known as Tik Tok feminists was crammed into this book. Right down to the boring and spineless hero assuring the heroine she doesnt belong to him because “i dont have ownership over you…”
Listen, pendeja, when reading a romance the last thing i want to hear the hero say is that the heroine doesnt belong to him! I WANT ALLLL the FUCKING “MINE!!” vibes you can squeeze into those pages! I want ownership, i want possessiveness, and without it, your romance is a FAIL.
This is what happens when toxic ideologies parasitize the brain.
3. The hero was the ideal feminist man: spineless and neutered. He was constantly ashamed of himself, constantly apologizing, constantly self-flagellating, right down to regurgitating feminist dogma. He had no personality and was passive the entire time.
4. The behavior and attitudes and mindsets were straight 21st century, right down to an unmarried friend of the heroine smoking a cigarette and saying “fuck them.” How about fuck this book?
The only positive thing I can say about this absolute waste of 2 hours, is that its safe. Dual virgins. No ow/om, no cheating or sharing or abuse. Hea with epilogue

Okay, first of all, can we talk about the cover? I'm judging it in the BEST way. It's so stinking adorable, and one hundred percent perfect for the characters, too. Yes, please, do judge this book by the cover.

I fell absolutely in love with Emery and Augie from page one. Seriously. That proposal? Their families? Allllllll the reasons they were sooooo in love with each other, but had no clue whatsoever. It pulled me in, kept me enthralled, and gave me all the feels. The pacing was spot on (never dragged, never felt like you skipped anything, just right). I wanted to climb in and live with these characters! Can I keep Augie? He's such a sweetheart, but also protective, and very stand up for what's right, not a push over, just an overthinker (hello, I can relate to that part). This second novel by Laney Hatcher was everything I hoped it would be and so much more! This is a story about the relationships we forge in youth and how they can change as you grow and help shape who you can become.
This enchanting tale starts out with a simple plan, Em and Augie, two life long friends will marry in order to avoid the pressures of their families and society. Things become complicated almost immediately when feelings and lustful thoughts emerge. Then the unthinkable happens and their simple plan for a simple country life goes up in flames. Now these two opposites are forced to build a life in the aristocratic society they never thought to join.
I loved everything about this book! Emery and Augustus are wonderfully dynamic and quirky, they complement each other beautifully, and the voices Laney has given them are thoughtfully relatable. This story is well constructed, with low drama but plenty of feels! All the Feels. I love Laney’s delightfully whimsical writing style, it always make me think of fairytales.
The burn is slow with this one, and the spice in minimal but there are several swoony and steamy passages!
It is safe to say at this point that Laney Hatcher is a new favorite of mine and I look forward to every and anything she writes!

Okay, I know Laney Hatcher just released two books this year but can we can another one soon!?
I loved this book! I struggle with historical romance at times and often reread favorites when I'm in the mood for them but First to Fall was just AMAZING!
Emery was great loved her personality, loved that she was a free spirit it was very relatable!
Augie is charming and a sweetheart and I love him!
I loved how protective he was of who Emery was.
Augie and Emery's friendship was such a important part of this story and it was lovely.
The development of their friendship to something more was very natural and real.
I did at time just want them to tell each other their feelings but you know I can get impatient.
Overall I had such a great time reading this!
If you're a fan of friends to lovers, historical romance and just good storytelling you need to check this out!

-my favourite trope, but i wish it was single POV
-why did we not get a full scene of the wedding and nuptials?!
-the second half was way too drawn out, and nothing happened
-i needed more to happen with the actual fake fiancé bit, besides just wedding planning
-i liked the romance but it wasn’t developed well enough
-I didn’t care about any of the subplots
-though i love the cover, it had me thinking this was YA

‘I didn’t know how Augie felt, but this thing growing between us over the summer had culminated into a victorious realization. I loved Augie. Beyond friendship. Beyond rational thought.
I felt untethered. Like I was one strong summer breeze away from being lifted off the earth beneath my feet. It was having a wondrous secret and being so deeply in it, you were consumed. Love was knowing only the joyous musings whispered in your heart. And if you were very lucky, the heartbeats of your beloved whispering back.’
It’s no secret that Historical romance is an endless source of happiness for me. It’s the one genre, regardless of trope, that never fails to move me in so many unfathomable ways. It’s seductively more subtle in its approach to love. Lingering looks across a crowded room, a soft, barely there kiss on the exposed skin of a dainty wrist, a treehouse full of memories, wonder, friendship and passion.
‘First to Fall’, by Laney Hatcher manages to utilise her cornucopia of writing talents within, taking her protagonists and the storyline to heady heights, charming, bewitching and winning readers in the process. It’s a beautiful, slow-burning kind of romance story, with a wonderful dose of seemingly unrequited love, a deeply entrenched friendship and a marriage of convenience. Three separate ingredients that could have been the makings of any good historical romance. However, Laney Hatcher has cleverly combined all of the above, adding in an abundance of fun and flirtation, great comedic timing, sweet romantic moments and scintillating bedroom scenes (make that treehouse) to deliver a truly exceptional historical romance.
Our hero and heroine are terrific. Individually they are remarkable. Vastly different in disposition and personality but fundamentally so much the same. Huge hearts, kind souls and a bottomless well of devotion for the other. It’s through author Laney Hatcher’s sterling creativity, characterisation and plot that we end up completely immersed and invested in Augie and Emery.
A happy-ever-after never felt so satisfying.

I desperately want more of this entire world.
Emery and Augie have a best friends to lovers romance though both are reluctant to admit their true feelings. The fact that Emery is so headstrong and it pains Augie to keep his true feelings in check just makes their romance that much more delicious.
Laney Hatcher has crafted characters that stand on their own, and given us a tease of what is to come, which will surely be as fun and as vibrant as First to Fall.

I discovered Laney Hatcher through Smartypants Romance and find it difficult to believe she’s a new author. This is a confident, captivating historical romance with appealing, rounded main characters and plenty of wit, heat and depth. I’ll be thinking about Emery and Augustus’ story for a while and look forward to reading the next one.

Laney Hatcher has officially sold me on Historical Romance! After releasing her magnificent debut novel, Neanderthal Seeks Duchess, earlier this month, Laney Hatcher has already outdone herself! First to Fall is a wonderful friends-to-lovers story brimming with swoon-worthy romance, hidden identity, lemon cakes, and a bit of suspense. Laney’s vivid imagery will whisk you away to the gorgeous English countryside as you follow Emery and Augustus on their adventures. Secrets, berry tarts & unrequited feelings abound in this charming book. Augie is the pragmatic pillar of propriety and honor. Emery is the free spirited artist who loathes high society functions and expectations. First to Fall put hearts in my eyes from the first sentence. This book is utterly beguiling and a romance that stays with you long after reading.

Augie is so sweet and charming that my heart ached for him. I don’t know that I have ever connected with a heroine as deeply as I did with Emery. The deep, lifelong friendship between Emery & Augie is captivating, and the way their relationship evolves throughout the book is lovely. She is vivacious, brilliant, truehearted and fiercely protective of her relationship with Augie. As she attempts to squeeze herself into a box of societal norms, Augie tries as best he can to preserve her wild nature while keeping his true feelings from her. Emery and Augie have all the chemistry of Elizabeth and Darcy, with an added foundation of friendship.As their relationship evolves, sparks crackle and fly between Augie and Emery. From the ruse of a fake engagement to the admission of their true feelings, this story will take you on a roller coaster of emotions. Augie is so sweet and charming that my heart ached for him. I don’t know that I have ever connected with a heroine as deeply as I did with Emery. As she attempts to squeeze herself into a box of societal norms, Augie tries as best he can to preserve her wild nature while keeping his true feelings from her. Emery and Augie have all the chemistry of Elizabeth and Darcy, with an added foundation of friendship.As their relationship evolves, sparks crackle and fly between Augie and Emery. First to Fall is the debut novel from Laney Hatcher. A Regency romance, First to Fall is a charming story about two lifelong friends who decide to pretend to become engaged as a protection for their futures. With a style that engages her readers easily, Hatcher enchants you with Augie and Emery’s journey into love. For many readers in romancelandia, the friends to lovers trope is a hard pill to swallow. It’s difficult to understand how two people who spend so much time together can move from an undying friendship to undying love. However, Hatcher writes it so well with a heroine who has moxie for days. She’s the partner in their duo who pushes the always buttoned-up Augie to his breaking point. She is the yin to his yang. And she’s clueless. Augie pines for Emery for almost their entire friendship, but, being the ever stalwart gentleman, he hides it for a couple of reasons. Those reasons are the ties that bind this story together. They are the means by which Hatcher makes her story believable.
The true highlight for me of First to Fall is Augie. His character is equal parts adoring best friend and broken hero. His manner with Emery throughout the story is its heart. As a reader, you find yourself yelling at the story, urging him to declare his feelings, but that’s the anticipation that Hatcher wrings out of her romance. Obviously, she must partner him with a ferociously determined, but somewhat clueless Emery. While Augie knows his true feelings, the other piece of Hatcher’s building tension is Emery’s sightless understanding of her interest in Augie. However, she is always protective of him, even when he believes he isn’t worthy of it. Together, Augie and Emery’s progression is a tussle of emotions that eventually find their grand finale at the perfect moment.
Overall, I enjoyed First to Fall. This isn’t a book of fireworks. There is Regency romance spiciness to be found here as Augie and Emery examine their attraction, but their journey is steady with a tinge of tension to keep you engaged. Emery Bartholomew is willing to do just about anything to avoid a society marriage and life in the city. Her best friend, Augustus, is also heading towards a future chosen by his family. Emery “proposes” an idea that may benefit them both. Can a marriage of convenience save them both from a bleak future? A secret identity along with a shocking turn of events puts all of their plans in the balance.
This book has the perfect blend of sweet romance and humor with just the right amount of spice. I don’t always like the “friends to lovers” trope but when the author makes it a marriage of convenience and the male protagonist falls first, it is a piece of perfection. The first line of the book really sets the tone for the whole book and gives so much insight into Emery and Augie’s relationship.
While this is a historical romance, there is something relatable in that although their circumstances are different, Emery and Augie are both under the scrutiny of familial obligation. The main characters are just so likable that you can’t help but root for them to succeed.
First to Fall is the first book in Laney Hatcher’s new “Bartholomew” series and an excellent start. I cannot wait for book 2: Second Chance Dance and Patricia’s story. There are so many interesting secondary characters that I’m looking forward to seeing who else gets their own book in the future.

This book has the perfect blend of sweet romance and humor with just the right amount of spice. I don’t always like the “friends to lovers” trope but when the author makes it a marriage of convenience and the male protagonist falls first, it is a piece of perfection. I had 3 strikes against me with this book.
1. I don't particularly like historical romance
2. I don't always love the friends to lovers trope
3. I ignored 1 and 2 and added this to my TBR solely because of the cover
I know that's a weird way to start a review, but I just say it to say I'm so glad I set aside my biases and gave this a shot! I freaking ADORED this book!
Emery is an independent spitfire heroine, and Augie is a perfectly broken, endearing hero. They've been best friends their entire lives with Emery dragging Augie along for any number of adventures over the years. When Emery hatches this marriage of convenience plan (which IS a favorite trope of mine) she does it in hopes of sparing them both futures they don't want - totally oblivious to the fact that Augie is head over heels gone for her.
The friends to lovers progression is so well done it in this one that it makes me question why I think I don't like the trope. I was hooked on this story from the first couple of pages. There's a little angst and tension along with emotional moments/situations, but mostly this is just a super fun, entertaining read! I genuinely can't wait for more stories from this world!
For however much sense this makes - to me, this story read like a contemporary romance set in regency times vs. what I always think of as "typical" historical romance (which may well point to incorrect preconceived ideas on my part). So if you've never read historical romance, or, like me, don't think you're a fan of the genre, READ THIS BOOK!

So she wouldn’t have to go through all the courting process and possibly marring someone she didn’t like and Augie would be free of his terrible brother to join the military or the clergy.
Em and Augie couldn’t be more different, but their relationship involved love, trust, supporting each other. They were best friends who were also soulmates. The progress of their relationship from friends to lovers was excellent. I admired Emery’s persistence and determination.
If you enjoy historical romances extremely well written, with wonderful characters and both sweet and spicy, give this book a read. I can’t wait for the next one in this series.

I had the pleasure of reading an #eARC of this early and I am so ready to hype the snot out of this book!! This is Laney’s second release and I am ALL in. Her writing style is light and endearing, then all of a sudden she ratchets up the heat 100 degrees and you’re caught clutching your pearls and making sure nobody can read over your shoulder. This is my favorite way to read!

Emery Bartholomew is a reluctant young lady of the ton, a responsible arsonist, horsewoman, and closeted art phenom. Augustus is the second son of a Duke, uncertain about his future, and Emery’s best friend. Both on the precipice of being forced into futures they don’t want, Emery makes a bargain (see also: demand.) They will enter into a fake betrothal/marriage so they are the ones that get to determine their fates. With new lenses on each other, they both grapple with changing feelings and unexpected responsibilities. Will this marriage destroy their friendship, or fortify it into something stronger?
GAAAH. This is how *friends to lovers* is supposed to beeeeeee. Do you hear me screeching and kicking my legs like a toddler with mystery rage? Because that was my exact reaction.

Ever read a new author and want to go back and read everything they’ve ever wrote? Well, after reading this book, I felt like that about Laney but then remembered that she has only written two books total and I have now read them both 😭This book is just absolutely perfect- it’s tug on the heartstrings sweet, funny, steamy, and that cover is the cutest!
Augustus and Emery are best friends in a time where a relationship like that wasn’t the norm, making it all the more sweeter. I love how loyal and steadfast Augustus was, and how he is so handsome and smart but the complete opposite of a rake. Emery is witty, strong, funny, with an interesting secret. The insecurities the both of them have are very real and it was great to see them work through that together. The love they have for each other is so pure and obvious from page one even as they are still coming to terms with what that means for their relationship through out the book.
Told from dual POV (my favorite), First to Fall is a friends to lovers, marriage of convenience historical romance that only made me cry because my heart was so full and I never wanted it to end!

Then you HAVE to read this book. I was kindly given an ARC by Laney (who’s the nicest human) and I’m so glad she did, because I adored this book.
Emery and Augustus have been best friend their whole lives. They know each other inside and out. Which is why Augustus gets the shock of his life when Em proposes they marry. It gets his family off his back and keeps her from having to endure another boring London season. Sounds like a win/win. Except Augie is in love with Em and doesn’t want her to give up a potential live match even if this marriage is everything he could ever want.
This was sweet, a little angsty, and a good deal spicy. Friends to lovers is a trope that’s either really good or really bad and Laney knocked it out of the park.
Also, I cannot believe that this is only her second novel ever!! The writing is phenomenal and her historical details are spot on!
I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Historical Romance is not really my genre, but my goodness this is a brilliant read.
I love Augie and Em. I rarely read books with characters who know themselves so well, but there they are on page, just fully realised adults. Adults who know when they’re being a bit a jerk or idiot or dummy, who know their strengths and know they just want to live happily.
They are the embodiment of the friends-to-lovers trope. They have their ups and downs but you can see a friendship that is truly treasured.
The secondary characters were all wonderfully written. I really enjoyed disliking Angie’s brother, John. He basically made me want to flip the bird at my e-reader every time his name came up… and when a character causes such a reaction from you, you know the character was well written.
As I mentioned before, this is not really my genre. But First to Fall was a wonderful, capturing read. It felt welcoming to a modern reader, it was charming, with a flowing plot, and perfect but also flawed main characters that captured my attention from start to finish. I am so excited to read more…

I discovered Laney Hatcher through her first book for Smartypants Romance, Neanderthal Seeks Duchess, and I loved it, even though historical regency is not my preferred historical period. Having enjoyed Laney’s first book so much, I enthusiastically read First To Fall and loved it as well.
Emery and Augustus are best friends who agree to marry to avoid being forced into a future they don’t want. For Emery that’s being paraded in society to find a good match and for Augustus it’s either joining the military or the clergy as he’s the second son of deceased duke. What they don’t realize is they are both in love with each other. Laney Hatcher is a new historical romance author on the scene and her writing is certainly making its way into many reader’s hearts, mine included!
In First to Fall, we meet Emery and Augustus, childhood friends, who decide to embark on a fake marriage. Well Emery decides, and Augie reluctantly agrees! Little does Emery know, Augie is in love with her, and what follows is a wonderful read as we see Emery slowly discover her own attraction and feelings towards Augie, Oh my heart!
First to Fall is the best kind of friends to lovers romance, with lots of little lovely snippets along the way and a deep-seated friendship as a foundation.The two families have known each other a long-time, history is there with many happy moments spent together over the years. I love seeing Emery and Augustus’ relationship slowly change and develop, and the setting makes for addictive reading! Historical romance fans, I think you’ll love this one!

In First to Fall, we meet Emery and Augustus, childhood friends, who decide to embark on a fake marriage. Well Emery decides, and Augie reluctantly agrees! Little does Emery know, Augie is in love with her, and what follows is a wonderful read as we see Emery slowly discover her own attraction and feelings towards Augie, Oh my heart!
First to Fall is the best kind of friends to lovers romance, with lots of little lovely snippets along the way and a deep-seated friendship as a foundation.The two families have known each other a long-time, history is there with many happy moments spent together over the years. I love seeing Emery and Augustus’ relationship slowly change and develop, and the setting makes for addictive reading! Historical romance fans, I think you’ll love this one!

I absolutely loved First to Fall, and I am so glad it is book one in a series so we get more from this author, characters, and world!
Emery and Augustus' slow burn, friends-to-more romance hooked me from the very beginning. It was so easy to see the genuine love, affection, and true friendship they share. I was so glad this was dual POV so I could get inside both their heads as the marriage of convenience/fake engagement plot turned real relationship unfolded. From the beginning they are so protective of one another and Augustus has already fallen for Emery. They were perfection together and I loved every minute of their story.
The story moved at a good pace and Laney's writing is engaging and entertaining. It's hard to believe this is only her second book published. I can't recommend this and her novel Neanderthal Seeks Duchess enough. I know this book just released but I already can't wait for the next one!

This story had be smiling from the first page and kept me smiling until the very end. A story of childhood best friends to lovers. Emery was fun and quirky, a spitfire. I loved her so much. Augustus was so in love with Emery, you could just tell. I throughly enjoyed their journey from friends to lovers. I loved Emery’s love for cake and her love for the outdoors. How she named her horses. Her secret talent. I cracked up how Emery proposed. I loved how supportive Augustus was of Emery. He didn’t try to change her at all. They way he described his feelings for Emery. Swoon!! I also loved how Patty and Mary helped Emery in the end. I can’t wait to read more in this series.

If you have always wanted to try HR but find it hard to read or cringy- try this one- it's super modern but still has the historical feel. It's spicy once we get there and I mean we have best friends (childhood) to lovers that are just so cute and perfect together with a fake engagement. We also get a treehouse so that should sell you right here! I loved these characters and how they were BFFs but also had a lot to learn about each other and grow in their relationship and marriage.
But for real, this is a great starter HR with good people, side characters, family, spice and relationship. I’m really really really excited to see more of this series and more of Laney’s writing!

This book is so much fun! Author Laney Hatcher’s previously published work is fan fiction based on a well-loved series so I was eager to see what she would do with a completely original work. In “First to Fall” Hatcher delivers characters that are incredibly easy to love and a fun new storyline as she sets the scene for the Bartholomew Series.
Emery and Augustus have been best friends all their lives. Growing up on neighboring estates, Emery was always running wild and Augustus was always following in her wake, agreeing to the plans and schemes she devised. When Augie returns home after schooling, and Emery suggests a marriage of convenience in a bid to avoid a London season, she doesn’t give her best friend much chance to refuse. But Augustus has been a goner for Emery for years. How will he survive a fake relationship and keep his heart intact?
This book has helped me realize how much I enjoy a good friends-to-lovers story. There’s so much history between these two that their chemistry seems effortless. I’m eager to catch future glimpses of these two on the periphery of the other Bartholomew stories.

Just lovely
Such a sweet read. I don't read a ton of Regency romance, but I might have developed a habit after this one. The banter, the friends to lovers trope, the setting, the emotions... I really enjoyed it.
As far as negatives, there isn't much. Some of the language was very modern, not what one would hear back then, and each time it threw me off a little bit. That's my only real complaint.

With the pressures of making a match in London increasing Emery hatches a plan to not only rescue herself from an ill-fated match but her best friend Augustus as well. As the second son he's told it is either the military or the clergy, when all he truly wants is to see the tenants on his family's ducal estate taken care of. So what does Emery suggest, well more so announce, a betrothal. One that starts out fake and begins to turn into something more as the childhood friends become more.
From the opening first line of this novel to the interaction between these two childhood best friends, I knew I was going to adore this novel. I was taken aback by the first person POV, but was very very very pleased that Laney Hatcher gave us Augustus's POV as well. Her writing style and characters really drew me into the story and once I started it was difficult to put the book down. She has this way of creating such a beautiful scene with her words especially with the moment between Auggie and Emery in the tree house.
