Since Akia fled to Benin in search of my mother, I have no choice but to follow. But first, I have to find Priest, who's somewhere in Senegal. Then I have to locate a box that Ishtar, one of the most dangerous of the Royal Seven, has demanded that I find. And of course, I have to stop Akia: power-hungry, dangerous Aka, who will do anything to become a god. Even if that means bringing back my mother from the dead.
L. L. Farmer, a native Floridian, attended the University of Florida where she earned a Bachelor's degree in English. After teaching in her hometown of Orlando for nine years, she relocated to New York City where she taught and lived for nearly a decade. In 2014, while raising a small child and teaching high school, she earned a Master's degree in Creative Writing. The next two years were spent on researching and writing two novels. The second of the novels is the recently published Slave Ship Rising (2017). She is currently preparing to publish the first book in her butt-kicking heroine series.
I love the series, but Neema got on my nerves more in this book than any other. There’s lots of proud African history in this book but I hate that even as a supernatural kick-ass heroine Neema is a cliche independent black superwoman. She has to (has to because she decides to) carry the weight and responsibility of the world on her shoulders. She won’t let anyone help her without a whole bunch of back and forth. She won’t let a man be a man, a demon be a demon, or an “angel” be and “angel” (slight spoiler). The way she “took what she wanted” from Priest? Not sexy. She treats everyone like they’re fragile or incompetent, pushes everyone away, but then gets upset that she’s all alone. I think she and Baal deserve each other and Priest should move on. She holds the same grudges over peoples heads (why didn’t you tell me?!) while keeping secrets and saving major conversations for later (now’s not the time. Let me shower and rest). I skimmed this one just so I could see what happened.
I did say I liked the book right? There seems to be some character development on the last couple of pages (she finally shows Alastor some appreciation). It ended on enough of a cliffhanger that I may read the next one.
This gave me chills.....Excerpt....I walked to the edge of the water, jumping when a ghostly form rested her hand on my arm, her hand as solid as flesh. She was silent as they all were. The souls must have numbered in the millions, lost Africans who turned toward me as if I held their redemption. But how could I save the dead? Another touched me, a boy of maybe twelve who held my hand. His touch was just as solid. They pulled me forward as bodies parted to make space for me. I walked tentatively on the water until I remember how Gzifa returned home, gracefully stepping across the sea that had once taken her from the land of her birth. And then I understood. They weren’t lost. They had come, millions of them, to hold me up, to keep me afloat as I walked toward whatever destiny awaited me. These souls were both guiding me and holding me like an ancestral foundation on which I could stand. And as long as I remembered they were there, I would neither sink nor drown.Akia wanted my mother’s power; she wanted to be a god, but there was no greater power than human resilience in the face of human suffering. And I could see that truth in the faces of the women and men who carried me forward, across this spiritual sea. They had suffered, but they’d been strong. That strength and power were three centuries deep in me, and there was no way in hell I was about to let Akia get her hands on it.
It’s been a journey as we weave through Neema’s life, past and present. The author has done such a good job of of incorporating black history, paranormal, mystery and a little bit of romance all in one. The downside for me is having to keep up with all the characters and sometimes the book is slow to get through. Many of my complaints about the previous books are actually addressed in this book. Neema traveling internationally and it being noted that she’s the only demon hunter alive which alludes to the fact that’s there should be more or once was more. I’m glad Neema can see her faults. It’s also humbling for her to be as old as she is that she’s still so naive about the worlds surrounding her. My suspicions were confirmed this book that the Vodou already had her sights on Neema and not because of her lapse of judgement. She was made to forget. Neema’s past and present are so directly correlated. A lot was revealed and as we hit to the end I see that there will be another book. Can’t wait.
I just turned the last page of this wonderful novel and I am craving MORE. The author has really outdone herself with this one. There was so much hotness in here, I'm talking sizzling romance, amazing fight scenes, more intrigue and adventure. Just everything a reader could ask for including African history and mythology.
In a nutshell, Neema has to find the demon-witch Akia because once Akia finds Kalunga(the afterlife that the demon hunter walks), she will destroy everything. Not only that, but Neema has to find a box for one of the royal 7 demons and finally, her love life is further complicated because Priest is back and is honest about rekindling the flame with her, but Baal, a high ranking demon is displaying jealousy because he wants Neema too. It's clear that he wants Neema.
But Neema has to learn more about who she is and the people who has those answers are those from her past.
So begins the adventurous journey in Book 5, and I am telling you now...there has to be a Book 6. I can't wait!
I enjoyed all the books so far, but I have an issue with Neema, the f demon hunter, especially in this last book after 300 years she still didn't learn how to ask questions, how she survived this long, I don't know if she wasn't immortal she would not be alive I won't give up the ending but she was on point it definitely was her fault Please make her smarter in up coming books From demons to angels to humans all tell her the same thing Ask Questions, the Right questions, have a plan, figure it out before you move, enough already!!!
Babbyyyy when I tell you LL plays no games!!! This book was filled with action and the good loving we've been missing. When I say there were several times I wanted to pop Neema. Like for real girl after 300 yrs use a tad of your brain!!! The cliffhanger in this book has me waiting on needles for the next release. BUY THE BOOK!!!
As an Ifa practitioner I have enjoyed the series from day one. Wonderfully crafted with references to the ancestors, Orun and certain Orisha. Certain demons attaching themselves to humans according to their lust is a very powerful concept! I think this author is certainly onto something!
This series just keeps leveling up, y'all. With every book, we're peeling another layer off Neema, and I'm here for it. The character growth? Chef's kiss. And the way African mythology weaves through the story? Pure genius. But let's talk about that cliffhanger – had me shook! Looks like sleep's gonna have to wait, 'cause there's no way I'm not diving into the next book tonight.
I took a really long time to finish this book because I was about ready to give up my fav hobby of reading. This saved me, I’ve been reading some horrible books and I just wanted to savor this, but Neema was working my last nerve just a little. Only because I felt this part of the saga made her seem so weak, but she redeemed herself. I cannot WAIT for the next one..
I love this book and can't wait until next one. I believe she will finally meet her father. Does Vodou get her or does the other demon hunter get her. If her father is the God of death can she take a soul? If u love intrigue and puzzles u must read this book
Wow you've done it again. I thank you for creating and sharing this set of stories with us. I know this journey is not over. Stay strong and blessed we are all looking forward to enjoying the next part of the journey. Now to enjoy your other works of wonder.
Please tell me it’s another book or spin off! I lived for Neema’s story mixed with our history. Your writing is on a whole new level then what I’m use to. I hope Neema gains mor knowledge & courage because that’s what made her always feel lost. Something had to give 😩
Another great read! I started and didn’t put it down until I finished. The author does a fantastic job of setting up every chapter with either past experiences by the main character or actual historical events. I’ll continue continue to follow Ms Farmer and I look forward to more of her creative and imaginative genius.
I need more! I initially thought that this book was the end of the series but im thrilled that it isn’t. I can’t believe how much Neema continues to find out about her life, her mom’s story and the spiritual realm, even after 300 years. Neema still isn’t asking enough questions or the right questions. Also I want more scenes with Baal lol
Loved it all uve been waiting for this forever it feels lol all I know is while this book is being wrote seems better not die after all of that its a must read but start at 1 or you'll be confused
I won’t get technical.. I’m going to be just me.. I LOBE THIS BOOK THIS SERIES THIS AITHOR!!! The history and “mythology” it’s great, makes a person think hard on what they know.. I highly recommend !!! When does the next book drop?
Simply awesome series!! I don't know if I can't as long for the next adventure /book!!! Oh my Neema may be mortal and what happens next!! L.L please don't keep us waiting!!
Not my usual genre but I was hooked from chap 1 of book 1 til the end of book 5. I read all 5 books in three days. The story flows & keeps you wondering what's going to happen the entire time. My only issue is that I'm ready for the next book!
L.L. Farmer did her thing once again!! I don't want to give too much away in my review but the attention to detail and the journey she takes you on is simply amazing! There are no other words to describe. I'm excited to see what's next on Neema's Journey
This series is phenomenal. Just finished Book 5 and will be starting Book 6 today for the completion of this series. This is a must-read. I feel like I truly understand every character backstory and they all tie together, keeping you excited as you read. Great writing!!
