Things have happened
A lot of things

If you’re a fellow reader who has reacted this far
You’re hooked
And you won’t stop

Meeting his father and his party
His interactions with his step mother and Paul

They were all well done
I wish the journey to the Bazaar was shorter in writing
But that was just because I was impatient to get the update of what circumstances everyone was in

A thrill after the calming and wholesome books from before

Rudeus and Elinalise arrive in the Labyrinth City of Rapan, quickly finding Paul and his party and joining them diving into the teleportation labyrinth. Things don't go as planned. It is a single story arc, good start and end point with a decent pacing. What follows is a well told story of a dungeon dive with action and some solid character development. Some people might not like Rudeus behaviour, but it is not nearly as bad as in earlier volumes and from a personality sense it works including some of the eyebrow raising actions further in by all people involved. The fact that Rudeus' is not just breezing through things is also a good selling point. All in all, a solid volume.

I love this series.

The author never fails to surprise me with each addition to the series. Endings are different and circumvent expectations. I enjoy the happy moments, feel anxious as Rudy does, and feel sad when he does. I can't wait for the next book already.

this is the volume where it all went downhill. before this volume, this felt like one of the ((very)) few isekais that was genuinely good, albeit with some problems, mostly relating to rudeus' creepy tendencies. i wasnt a big fan of him being a pedophile, but he at least seemed to be changing slightly. this is where the problem comes in. the volume ends with his father being dead, and his mother being in a coma. naturally, hes devastated. then, roxy has the genius idea of sleeping with him to cure his depression. i was actually kind of excited, as i thought this would be a turning point for the novel, where rudy would get angry at her for trying to fix his sadness by breeding with him, and start to realize how creepy he is/has been, and that his dumb choices are starting to have consequences. but nope, he sleeps with roxy, and completely forgets that his father just died (due to him being an idiot, no less), and returns home. i wont explain the rest, but if youre reading this you probably already know what happens after. maybe its my fault for expecting anything decent from an isekai, but it just makes me annoyed, seeing as this couldve been a great isekai, with some genuinely good character development. i havent read the rest of the volumes (obviously), but ive heard that he gets 3 wives (2 of which are/were children, and one that looks like one)which for obvious reasons is pretty disgusting. but they made ruijerd a pedophile too. for what reason? he was one of my favourite characters, that seemed like a good person, but then they make him that? why?? so much of this series confuses me to no end. anyways, rant over. i just wanted to write this somewhere because this volume really angered me yet for some reason no one talks about how horrible it is. i really hope the anime changes his character, but i already know they wont. and im going to have to watch this train-wreck for a second time.

This is probably mushoten's best volume in terms of pure narrative and stuff going on. Disregarding that atrocious spoiler in the start of the volume, it's an amazing read. Why 3 stars, though? Because I feel disillusioned with what Mushoten is becoming. It's not the story I fell in love with. This harem shit is so comical I can't take it seriously anymore. I love Roxy, easily my favorite girl. I dislike Sylphie, easily the worst girl. I was really sad to see Rudy marry Sylphie, because that meant there'd be a falling out with the other girls....... or so I believed. No. Rudy is going the Paul route and taking multiple wives. I'm honestly not sure why I couldn't see that coming. It's still not great, because personally the idea of polygamy is very weird, especially when Sylphie is so saintly about welcoming her. Now I can see how presumably Eris is gonna be the third wife and yadda yadda. I would typically drop the series after this, but knowing Mushoten, Rudy's offspring will take up the mantle soon and new adventures will unfold. I hope. I do wish this doesn't become even more degenerate than it already is and takes us to new places.

Entertaining Read

Rudeus is conflicted over traveling to another continent to help his father rescue his mother. He just got married and doesn't want to leave his wife who is with child. He will have regrets either way. He finally decides to go. Sure enough regrets, danger, adventure and conflicting emotions ensue. I like the action, humor, romance, and intrigue. I look forward to the next book.

The story of *Mushoku Tensei* Volume 12 unfolds in the city of Rapan, particularly in the underground labyrinth where Zenith is being held captive. The narrative cleverly revisits earlier plot points, most notably the book that Rudeus received from Sylphie in Volume 8. This book turns out to be incredibly valuable in deciphering the teleportation traps since it happens to describe the very labyrinth in Rapan. While this could have easily come across as a forced plot device, two factors prevent it from feeling contrived: first, Rudeus found the book by following the instructions of the Man God, suggesting that he was deliberately guided to this outcome for reasons that are yet to be revealed. Second, the book is only helpful for navigating the initial levels of the labyrinth, leaving the final puzzle and boss fight for Rudeus and his companions to solve on their own. The book aids them in facing the deadliest challenge, the Hydra, but it doesn’t remove the need for them to overcome significant obstacles along the way.

Two key relationships take center stage in this volume, both of which have profoundly shaped Rudeus as a character: his relationships with Paul and with Roxy. Rudeus’ interactions with Paul are bittersweet from the outset. Though they finally reunite after a long time, Paul never gets the chance to fully express his pride in what Rudeus has accomplished. Instead, he grapples with his own sense of failure as a father, feeling burdened by his reliance on his son. This is underscored by several conversations where Paul laments his weakness and elevates Rudeus by making the heart-wrenching request that Rudeus sacrifice his own life to save his mother—not because Paul doesn’t love him, but because he trusts no one more. This dynamic culminates in a poetic way when Paul ultimately does exactly what he asked of Rudeus: he sacrifices his life to save his family, Zenith and Rudeus. This selfless act has a profound impact on Rudeus, the other characters, and the readers, forming the emotional core of this volume.

This chapter is a moment of disillusionment and sobering reality for Rudeus, the other characters, and the readers, even more so than the turning point in Volume 6. Until now, everyone had grown accustomed to Rudeus being virtually unstoppable once he set his mind on something. Most of his challenges were internal, dealing with his psychosocial issues, but when it came to raw power or combat skill, he could overcome any obstacle. The only exception was Orsted, but even after that, Rudeus not only learned how to intercept spells but continued his rise at the university: he tamed Linia and Pursena, defeated the academy’s strongest magician "Fitz" in one strike, dealt massive damage to the seemingly indestructible Badigadi, bested Luke in swordsmanship, and was hailed as the invincible super magician—reinforced by numerous comments about his endless mana reserves. Neither Rudeus nor the other characters anticipated that this mission would put him in real danger. Rudeus assumed he’d just pop over to Rapan, save Zenith, and return in time for the birth of his child—the question was never *if* he would succeed, but *when*. Except for Sylphie, who alone worried about him, the other characters didn’t act as if Rudeus was in any real danger. Even when he arrived in Rapan, everything seemed to go smoothly at first: he quickly solved the teleportation traps thanks to Sylphie’s book, rescued Roxy, and found the path to the final chamber where Zenith was held. But precisely because of this certainty, the ending hits harder—Rudeus fails on almost every level: Paul is dead, Zenith is saved but barely alive, and he himself loses an arm. This outcome is devastating for him, the other characters, and the readers.

For Rudeus, there’s an additional layer of despair beyond the immediate shock of loss. For the first time, he has to confront the possibility that he’s failed just as he did in his previous life. He compares his current relationship with Paul and Zenith to his past life and comes to the shameful conclusion that he’s once again failed to show his parents the appreciation they deserved. While it could be argued that Volume 7 marked Rudeus’ emotional low point, he still tried to make the best of his life, never losing sight of what he had achieved in this new life, largely thanks to his thoughts of Roxy. But now, in Volume 12, nothing of that remains: he sees his second chance as a failure because he didn’t learn from his first life, and this realization is at the heart of the tragedy surrounding this moment. This tragedy becomes even more poignant when Rudeus, through his grief and the loss of his parents, finds an emotional clarity he’s been searching for and finally realizes that he truly loved Paul—something he’s finally able to admit at Paul’s grave. For once, he expresses this from the depths of his heart, without any pretense or rehearsed reactions, unlike how he often interacted with his parents. In a poetic way, Rudeus says goodbye to Paul while also stepping into his role—he’s now a father himself, determined to embody the qualities he saw and felt in Paul. In this way, Paul lives on in Rudeus, guiding him as a role model on the difficult journey ahead. The emotional depth of this resolution makes it perhaps the most moving episode of the entire series so far.

On the other hand, I have more mixed feelings about the other major relationship in this volume, between Rudeus and Roxy. On one hand, there are some beautifully composed elements here that create a lyrical effect: Roxy pulls Rudeus out of his depression, just as she did in Volumes 1 and 7; she feels deep shame over her feelings and is comforted and accepted into the family by Sylphie; and when Rudeus saves her, she finally sees him not just as her student. The characters’ reactions are all organic and plausible: Norn, grieving deeply over Paul’s death, has emotional outbursts at the thought that Rudeus might have enjoyed himself with another woman instead of giving his all to the mission; Sylphie, who had previously indicated she would accept Rudeus taking other wives, surprisingly justifies this with his faithfulness, believing that after sex, he would take care of the woman rather than abandon her; Roxy, torn between her selfish feelings for Rudeus and her altruistic desire not to intrude on his relationship; Rudeus, who has harbored strong feelings for Roxy since Volume 1, caught between these feelings and his loyalty to Sylphie; and Elinalise, who is constantly weighing the happiness of Rudeus, Sylphie, and Roxy, reacting differently depending on the situation and trying to find a solution that doesn’t bring misery to anyone, even advising Rudeus to enter into this second marriage. All of this is well-executed, but what bothers me is how sex is used as a sort of therapy for Rudeus, which then ties him to Roxy. Their relationship was previously less of a romantic one and more defined by mutual respect. Roxy had always been a moral and mental support for Rudeus without the need for sex, and I thought this special mentor-student dynamic was what made their relationship unique. I do think there was a plausible way for them to become a romantic couple, but for me, it would have worked better if the sequence of events had been different: Roxy supports Rudeus mentally, helps him out of his dark place, and then he falls in love with her, leading to sex. As it is, it feels a bit like Rudeus lost control in a weak moment, and then sex and the subsequent lie about her pregnancy are used as tools to bind Roxy to Rudeus, whereas an emotional progression toward both would have felt more cohesive in my humble opinion.

Setting aside these issues, this volume was brilliant. I haven’t spoken much about the surface-level plot (the journey through the labyrinth, solving puzzles, the battle with the Hydra, and Rudeus’ shameful return), as it fades in comparison to the internal struggles, but I also found these aspects exciting with some unexpected twists that provided a poetic framework for the entire work, connecting Rudeus’ reunion with his father at the beginning, processing his death in the middle, and finally taking on his role at the end. Before I go on for too long, I’ll wrap up my observations here. Now, I’m curious to see how the anime will adapt this story and how Volume 13 will build on it, once I find the time to read it.

Emotional damage! I knew my lovely and cozy days were over the moment we decided to go to Begaritt, but this was just one blow after another and Lord… there’s too much happening in this book.
The anime is just catching up so I can’t wait for the animation, but I’m glad I read this before. It gave me time to process a lot of the things that happened and it certainly carried more impact.
If any of you have reached this point on the story, I don’t think I need to mention any spoilers, the shock alone is enough, and hopefully you’re as hooked with the story as I am. What a wonderful array of characters I’ve seen, all of them different, with different strengths and weaknesses, and all of them growing at their own pace. I’ll admit I never gave Paul enough credit, but seeing him in action, knowing what he was able to pull off, and seeing the decisions he ends up making in a fight… man he’s good. A way better fighter that Rudeus as far as experience goes. And seeing Rudy also growing, becoming and adult and finally getting to do all the stuff he didn’t in his previous life is amazing. I love this author, he really does know how to write a compelling story.

No longer to my taste

This is not a reflection of the writers skill or the quality of the story but of my preferences. I got to 70 % and lost interest what happens around that point left me too depressed to continue. I was barely interested in the story leading up to that point. I also have developed an increasing dislike for harem stories though I expected it to happen eventually.

Three-and-a-half stars.

I love me some isekai. If you pay any attention to my words, you know this already. It's the quintessential boys' fantasy: explore some fantastic places cut off from this repulsive Earth; exploit newly-gained, generally undeserved powers; meet cool people mostly of the attractive, female persuasion then have sex with them; possibly marry one or more of those gals before or after impregnating them; enjoy the fact that you will never, ever have to deal with Earth and its people again.

This time, our hero starts at the lowest point of his life: after two decades of parasitizing his parents as a hikikomori due to relentless bullying in high school, his parents died. Instead of attending the funeral, he spent that day jerking off to child porn (or loli hentai), a fact that bothered his siblings enough to beat him up and throw him into the streets. As he wandered in a daze, the mythical creature known as Truck-kun deigned to make a visit and transport the protagonist, along with a couple of people nearby, to death, and later on to a fantasy world.

Our protagonist gets reincarnated as a baby that retains the memories of his harrowing past life. In this new one he's Rudeus Greyrat, son of a horny swordfighter and a lively mage, who had retired from adventuring to start a family together. Rudeus is overjoyed by the fact that he's been given a second chance at life, but mainly that he's able to suck on a hottie's tits on a regular basis, and that the grown-ups around him forgive him for his relentless perversion. The anime adaptation did a good job rendering this, as seen here.

Anyway, lots of shit happens, as it tends to do. I read this volume of the light novel to catch up with the anime adaptation, that has just finished its second season. I'm discussing spoilers from now on, so read on only if you already know what happens, or you don't care to find out this way.

I'm going to be doing a general review of these books and the series as I am about half way through. As a Light Novel or looking at this book as YAL, it is very interesting to see the divide in culture between American and Japanese literature. Mushoku Tensei takes the approach of almost being a sit-com/comic book compared to the other YAL I have read while shifting in and out of some serious moments and emotional depth. It is also hard to put these YAL side by side as I am reading a translated version and it is hard to gain an in-depth reading of how it is stylized besides the content and pop culture references used constantly.

As far as the story and following Rudeus and his adventures in being reincarnated and starting a new life it is very odd pacing. Sometimes skipping through a lot of time, while other sections going really methodically through planning and giving plot, emotion, and character building. To best sum up my ideas of this novel is the combination of a fantasy storyline such as Lord of the Rings, with a very relatable and yet unrelatable protagonist, and some really strong Youth Lens moments to help reflect in the hardships that Rudeus and other characters have to deal with. My favorite parts are those Youth Lens moments giving a look into Rudeus having to deal with his past issues, and the hard moments of actually growing up when it isn't over saturated in the sexual jokes, and the rare moments of caring for others and not being completely self-absorbed. Overall, I find the series fantastic with having the unique experience of not really liking the main character for a good section of the novels to being able to connect and see him grow in this very likable fantasy world.

Unfortunately, I am dropping the series and this was my favorite series.

Rudy judged Paul so hard for having multiple wives and even yelled at him on numerous occasions for it, but is now OK with it when he gets to have both Roxy and Sylphie as wives? What the hell. Way to completely ruin any redeeming qualities about the character.

I really loved Sylphie and Rudy together but now it's tainted by this submissive nature of Sylphie. She's basically only agreeing to polygamy because she knows that if she doesn't, Rudy will leave her when she just had his baby. Talk about emotional blackmail. And even Rudy was monologuing how awful it would be for Sylphie to endure this and that he's way better than this.

No. Roxy didn't "save" him. She took advantage of him and even lied and the fact that this was glossed over in the light novel. To think I was defending this novel and Rudy, This is so disgusting. Rudy went from making harmless pervert jokes to cheating on his pregnant wives and trying to justify this...Literally went from being a 5 star novel to a 1 star novel. Rudy deserved being a shut in and he doesn't deserve this new life as a second chance because clearly he's never going to be mature enough.

One star only given for Norn, she's the only person in the novel who acts like a normal person and isn't a fangirl. What she told Rudy when she yelled at him was 100% true.

Cannot wait to read more.

I can't lie that I'm so conflicted here. I've been POWERING through the series, reading about a book a day for the last few books, rating each of them 5/5 despite minor annoyances with Rudues' sexual thoughts. Here we have the highest-rated book in the series that I was looking forward to, and oh boy did it deliver.

Whereas the 11th book made me weep from happiness, this one broke my soul and I wept from such sadness. Then, after such a journey to get to this point, Rudy goes and does the unthinkable showing no restraint and no learning to spit in the face of how serious the story had been going as of late. Of course, I'm going to keep reading till the end because I'm INVESTED, but I don't like what they've done here.

The main character is a terrible person, but this reads as a redemption story. You get to go on a journey with a weird creepy dude that is starting his life over and trying (sometimes failing) to stop from slipping into his old habits. The story is set in a world with magic and skills. There is plenty of sexual references and terrible internalized monologuing, but the actions of the MC are his attempt at redemption and thank goodness there are no actually graphically detailed scenes in the audio. Guessing by this having been released as a manga/graphic novel or whatever the correct word is for this type of asian comic book, I will absolutely not be interested in the visual imagery.

Pleasant change… for a time.

This Volume was fantastic and quite an emotional roller coaster until the end. At the end, it was not a happy one. Or even sad. I was disappointed. Managed to go almost the whole book without Rudy being Rudy. Then it all comes crashing home as he once again becomes the scummy isekai protagonist he has been and the series jumped back on the rails of wish fulfillment fantasy.

In this vol. We go through rudeus and elinalise trying not to fuck each other and going through the begratio continent so that they can help paul in rescue of Zenith.
I'm dissapointed BECAUSE I DID NOT GET ROXY IN THIS VOLUME! THE COVER IS FAKE!
But I will wait I'm patient 😒. Saying that these LN are very slow paced. Like this whole volume was about rudeus and elinalise trying not to fuck each other and killing monsters. But it was fine not the best nor the worst ⊂(・﹏・⊂).

What an amazing book that I couldn't put down. I spent my entire Saturday reading this book. I read 201 pages out of 229 in a single day - that's how good it was! I actually had tears in my eyes quite a few times. A few of those times I had to wipe them away because they came on more than usual! Volume 13 here we go!!

This seems like a good place to stop reading. There's not many threads left hanging at this point.

I probably skipped about 10-20% of the entire series as the author seemed committed to exploring the protagonist's frequent sexual thoughts... not my thing. There are also chunks of pre-planning followed by action that mostly follows the planned script. You can safely skip the planning phase.

Mushoku tensei book 12 has rudeus going to the Begraitt continent to the infamous teleportation labyrinth on a quest to find his mother. Now for my review this book was very action packed and had some great fight scenes that I can't wait to see in the anime in 2024 and the interactions between the characters were very compelling and sounded similar to the banter you would have with your friends

Big changes, yet again. Finding Roxy, Rudy's mom, and big adventure -- but dark stuff happens, too.

I'm getting the impression we're headed to harem manga territory -- but it has heart and communication and understanding, so I can't really feel bad about it.

After this far into the story? We're in it for the long haul.
