Don’t make friends. Don’t draw attention. Don’t talk to ghosts in public.
Until now, these three rules have kept Charlie alive. And she’s about to break all of them.
Enforcers patrol the streets looking for the last of the believers. The lucky ones are ‘rehabilitated’ in Enlightenment facilities. Those beyond help are incarcerated — or worse.
It’s a bad time to be able to talk to ghosts. 21-year-old Charlie could be killed for her gift, just like her mother. But working as an underground Seer pays well and it’s worth the risk if it means she can start a new life outside the city’s walls.
When she meets Wynn, a boy with the same gift, she agrees to mentor him against her better judgement. His older, handsome (and very dead) brother, Rhett, is not impressed, though conflict isn’t the only source of tension.
But there’s something the brothers aren’t telling Charlie and now she’s in more danger than she knows.
Soon, Charlie will have to decide between saving her own life, or that of the boy who trusted her.
An only child in a family of adults, Claire has always lived in worlds of her own. Now she’s found a way to share them with people, the challenge will be trying to stop her.
If you asked her then what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would have told you ‘an author’. If you ask her now, you’ll get the same answer.
Claire lives on the outskirts of Sydney with her fiance and a deranged (but well-meaning) rescue Kelpie.
You could say Claire is a little quirky - she enjoys exploring the underside of the human psyche. That’s where the monsters play.
If you’re looking for wholesome tales about flawless protagonists overcoming minor inconveniences, her writing probably isn’t for you.
Intriguing storyline with some twists and turns. Not usually my go to genre, but it had a bit of everything. Ranging from fantasy, romance, thriller and suspense. It is the kind of book that everyone will find something they like in it. My only criticism is that the book itself is physically larger than the average book size, and so it sticks out on my bookshelf.
I really liked the idea of this story and I liked the characters. The only down for me, that it dragged a bit and there were times I got bored a little. Otherwise, it’s a really interesting story with likable characters and good world building.
Conclusion:
I liked it, but it could have been shorter.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What a wonderful and unique story. I loved all the characters who were very well fleshed out - even the dead ones! Thank you for the epilog. I think readers deserve to know how everything has worked out after the big climax. Looking forward to the next offering by this talented author!
I have to admit, this is not my typical genre... although it was a pleasant change. A fast paced read full of emotion set in a dystopian world where freedom of thought is a luxury and beliefs are repressed. Looking forward to any sequel after this as well as any other awesome future novels from rising author Claire Dowler.
