Sometimes the most beautiful things grow in darkness.
When Jace moves to Santa Cruz, he never expects to find that ancient myth has turned into reality or find himself risking his life to protect a monster. That all changes when he meets Iris – a hauntingly beautiful girl guarding a horde of secrets.
Iris’ troubled life is too complicated to include Jace, but all too soon she’s in love with her prey. It isn’t until he hears her song – a hypnotic melody that leads men beneath the waves to their deaths – that her world turns upside down. As the tide runs red with the blood of the Harvest, Iris must choose: remain loyal to her family or save the life of the human boy she loves, sacrificing her identity as a siren of the sea.
Will Iris give in to her bloodlust and sacrifice Jace to the Harvest or will she turn her back on everything she’s ever known? If Iris chooses her clan, Jace’s soul will be lost forever. If she chooses Jace, then she must give up the chance for her own.

Aww, can I just say how much I LOVE Iris?! Definitely my favorite character in this book, even if she is a murderous siren (Okay, definitely one of the reasons why I love her!).
The Harvest has romance, evil mythological creatures, ocean/underwater shenanigans and adorable characters (not to be confused with the evil mermaids/sirens).
I must read the sequel soon because that ending was cruel! 😭
I received a copy of this book from Book Review 22 in exchange for a honest review.
Iris never expected to live her life trapped on land. Nor was she prepared for what she would find there. A siren isn't supposed to fall in love with her prey. When Jace moved to Santa Cruz, he never imagined he'd risk his life to protect a monster. He soon finds that ancient myth has become reality. And not every pretty face is what it seems. After Iris sings her siren's song to Jace — a hypnotic melody that leads men to death beneath the waves — both of their worlds are turned upside down. Will Iris give in to her bloodlust or will she turn her back on everything she's ever known? As the tide runs red with the blood of the Harvest, Iris must choose: save the life of the human boy she loves or sacrifice her chance at humanity forever.
I'm so glad I decided to try The Harvest (Call of the Sirens #1) by K.B. Benson. Honestly, I have a hard time resisting anything featuring mermaids or sirens. Luckily for me, this debut YA fantasy delivered. Benson's writing is quite engaging while being incredibly entertaining. I was hooked right off the bat. I particularly enjoyed how the author works the classic Greek mythology of the sirens and The Odyssey into this present day set story. Along with the fantastic sense of adventure, I also got a kick out of seeing the characters dealing with strictly speaking human issues. My only complaint about the novel is the romance - at times it's a little too romance heavy for my tastes and the jealousy element bothered me a bit as well. Overall, though, The Harvest is well worth your time especially if you're into paranormal romance, mermaids, sirens, or Greek mythology. I can't wait to read the sequel titled The Hunt after that ending!
Thanks again for this opportunity, Book Review 22!
I give this book 5 stars because I can’t go higher. This book blew me away. Mix a little modern day, everyday life with some Greek mythology and if done right, as in this case, winner, winner! I had seen an ad on Facebook from Amazon and couldn’t wait to read this. I’m looking forward to the sequels.
Iris is a lonely girl, a seventeen-year-old Senior in High School with few friends. She refuses to get close to anyone. Her life is not only a secret, but a lie. She is a very dangerous young lady. Then Jace enters her life. There is something about this new boy in school she can’t resist. It seems, he can’t resist her either. As luck would have it, they sit next to each other in Mythology class. He constantly pressures her for a date, but she doesn’t date. Finally, they go for a non-date “date” and Iris’s life gets even more complicated. Only one person knows her secret and that is her teacher.
When her secret finally surfaces, it is up to Jace and her teacher to save her and the town. Non-stop action and surprises that I don’t want to spoil for anyone. I guarantee you won’t be able to put this book down. Worst part- the cliff hanger ending. One hint- explore the myth of Sirens. How can you overpower an evil nature?
A sweet teenage romance that takes a dark turn due to Iris' secret identity.
"I am a seducer, a scheming temptress who lures men toward their death with a flick of my hair. I was not created to fall in love, we are not."
The main couple gave me some serious Romeo and Juliet vibes. Anyone else the resemblance?
1) Young, innocent puppy love. 2) Separated by feuding families (or species in this case). 3) Fatally attracted to one another/ doomed from the start (that's just my opinion, of course).
I rated this book 4 stars because although I enjoyed it, my attention lagged a bit in the middle. The main action occurs towards the end of the novel, and I was a bit impatient waiting for it to happen. But, it is very easy to read and I would definitely recommend this to the YA audience. Romance is a big part of the plot, but it is kept strictly PG. The story is very interesting, and started of strong.
I thought the narrative would be in Iris' perspective, or at least equally shared between herself and Jace, but only 10 out of 36 chapters are from Iris' point of view. I was a bit disappointed by this because I love Iris and find Jace a little boring (probably because he seems so young). I also didn't expect this to be set in a highschool, and hated some of the teenage lingo involved - wow, I'm making myself sound old.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review ahead of the series' relaunch. Overall, I think it is a good book that many readers will enjoy - especially the younger ones.
The Harvest is a classic example of a Siren inspired story where the boy falls for the Siren that is trying to kill him.
While I semi-enjoyed my time reading the first half of this book, thinking it was still fun and light-hearted enough for me, it soon became repetitive and I also realized not much was happening. This book seems to focus so much on the characters' high school life, that I forgot it was even a Siren related story. Action poorly unfolds and most "plot points" were predictable and fell flat for me. The characters are one dimensional and stereotypical examples of the "dark, mysterious girl" and the "fun, surfer dude" and that really made me take steps back from their relationship because I couldn't find anything unique or interesting about them that made me care. Once I got about 60% through this book, I began skimming it because I realized I would have been able to read the first eight or so chapters, and then the last few and still have as much knowledge of it as I do now. It was not a terrible book, but I was hoping for a fresh twist on the Siren story, not something I have read and watched on the TV quite a few times already.
Book Review: The Harvest (Call Of the Sirens Book 1) by K.B Benson
Jace Jacobsen, charismatic surfer dude (with an extremely surfer dude name), is unsure of what’s next after moving to Santa Cruz, California with his mom and stepdad. However, he quickly makes friends with the mysterious popular girl at his new high school, Iris. Iris’ consistent absences and murky past, though, leave Jace biting off more than he can chew.
His new friend, Iris, is a siren.
Plot, Characters, and Setting
As a main character, I found Jace pretty engaging. His conversations with his friends are surprisingly natural, and over the course of the book, I related a lot to his thought processes and the way he talked. Although by no means a bad guy, he definitely has his flaws, which prevent him from seeming one dimensional.
However, I felt that some of the side characters did come across slightly one-note. This was especially true in the first portion of the book, where the story heavily revolved around normal teenage interactions at the Santa Cruz high school. While these parts of the book were definitely still enjoyable, the lack of complexity found in these characters was a bit distracting. I also felt that, while I really liked Iris’ character, she was a bit inconsistent in the first part of the story as well. She quickly would switch from a powerful, independent character to a sort of damsel in distress.
This brings me to my main gripe with a book: it starts really slowly. I kind of feel like the romance between Iris and Jace, while well-written, starts a bit too soon in the narrative and takes up too much of the book time early on, which only further slows the pace of the book’s beginning. In addition, having the first 16 (out of 36) chapters be from the perspective of Jace dragged down the pacing of the book a lot and made it harder to get into than it should’ve been. Which isn’t fair, considering the engaging, descriptive writing style that pulled me in hard later on. And when the chapter perspectives start to get more balanced out between Iris and Jace half-way through, the book immediately takes off for me and becomes really exciting and addictive.
I actually enjoyed the plot a ton once it picked up! Everything gained a sense of momentum that was never slowed until the very last page (not hyperbole, this book does not let up once it gets rolling). And once everything does pick up, almost every complaint I had was near-instantly washed away. The main two characters, Iris and Jace, have a (once-again) natural chemistry that doesn’t seem forced or awkward. And that’s really rare in these kinds of books.
Some Slightly Sketchy Stuff
That chemistry between Iris and Jace does lead to some dicey moments, however. There’s nothing mega sketchy, but there are some suggestively descriptive paragraphs as their romance develops.
Despite that, this book is surprisingly clean. There was basically no swearing (one or two minor words in the last few chapters). In addition, any story about mythology is pretty much guaranteed to have some mythological allusions to gods that watch over the story-world. However, the God described in a few places within the book doesn’t seem to be some flawed being, but rather an all-powerful Creator (something I found really interesting). I can’t 100% confirm this, but based on the way that one of the side characters describes their view of God, everything seems to line up with the God of the Bible.
Jumping to violence, there’s naturally going to be some pretty gruesome stuff in a story about sirens. K.B. Benson (the author), though, does a great job maintaining the dark feel of the siren’s duty without delving unnecessarily into grotesque detail.
Summary and Final Thoughts
Overall, I definitely enjoyed The Harvest. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be my cup of tea after the slow beginning, but I started to love it about halfway through. There’s some really stand-out scenes + a plot twist or two near the end that made me audibly gasp (not something I normally would ever do). And considering this is K.B. Benson’s debut as an author, I think it’s fantastic and I’m actually really stoked to continue the series!
While I would love to give The Harvest an 8 out of 10, the slow beginning pulls it down to a 7.
The Harvest by KB Benson: 🩵 Siren falls for human 🩵 Mythological creatures 🩵 Challenging destiny 🩵 Surfing and ocean shenanigans
Loved this book! Getting POVs of both Iris and Jace really elevated this story. I was rooting for both of them! I really enjoyed the tension and stakes that drove you to keep turning pages.
I wanted to love this more than I did, and it started off pretty strong. I was invested and loving the siren/mermaid vibes (because I’m always here for books about mermaids). This ended up feeling like younger YA trying to be a more mature YA.
The background and plot were interesting. I liked having Iris beached on land and forced to take care of her siren duties. It was a bit murderous and I did like that darker side to the plot. I actually got to see the siren’s in action rather than just hints of what’s happening below the surface.
Jace was definitely my favorite character. He felt natural in the story and was a high school boy in love. Jace and Iris together were pretty cute. I liked getting to follow their relationship [at first]. Where I struggled was with the random “dates” and tangents of them hanging out to make it feel like more was happening. I wish those interactions really held more sway to the overall plot rather than feeling frilly and unnecessary. I thought Jace and Iris had a good relationship overall. The way Jace was written was rather annoying, but in a good way. You could see his obsession with Iris begin to take over his life. I thought his POV chapters were great. Jace was clearly trying to maintain a level head as the pull of Iris and the ocean became stronger.
With all the time spent on trying to force me to love their relationship it really dragged out the story, and that’s where everything started to fall apart for me. This book is nearly 400 pages long, and I’d say 150 of those weren’t wholly necessary. I thought the book was well-written minus the pacing issues.
Overall audience notes: - YA paranormal contemporary romance - Language: none - Romance: some kisses and an intense make-out - Violence: sirens attacking humans, drownings
This story was like other normal human meets paranormal being love stories, except with the twist that the boy was the normal one and the girl was paranormal. The author does a great job spinning the mythos, though some of the characters' decisions (with the exception of the normal human boy, who made normal human boy decisions) didn't quite make sense. The pacing was a bit slow in the middle, but when the climax came, boy did things heat up. It ended with a cliff hanger, so be ready to get pulled into a longer series.
I’m so excited to write this review for The Harvest. When I heard the synopsis involved sirens, I was so intrigued to read this book. Overall, this book was very entertaining. I enjoyed the unique take on Greek mythology and sirens. I think this book would be really well suited for the 12-16 age range, though it can be enjoyed by anyone else. I really the characters and their chemistry as it grew throughout the story. While the romance was sometimes cheesy, I still found myself rooting for them. I really enjoyed the wild ending, so much happened! It really kept me on the edge of my seat. And it had a great cliffhanger!! A really great book!!
Very interesting book about a siren who lost her tail and is forced to stay on land to lure prey into the ocean for her tribe to eat. Although this book is about sirens, there was a surprisingly little amount of Iris' POV until nearing the end of the book. Most of this book was more like a contemporary romance about high school life. I liked the character development of Jace, as most of the book was in his POV. Things got a lot more exciting near the end of the book, but it ends on a cliff hanger. Overall, interesting read!
Well where do I start?!? So many feelings! Okay, here is goes..
The wonderful author KB Benson generously gifted me a copy for an honest review, and I can’t thank her enough for that because this was such a marvelous story, that I think I might now have a small addiction to sirens/mermaids.
To be honest, I don’t read a lot of siren/mermaid books. For whatever reason I just don’t gravitate towards them, and I’ve probably only have read a handful since I was able to read. (That’s a long time, but I won’t be sharing my age on that one ;) ) Given that, I was thinking maybe I wouldn’t fall 100% in love with this book.(Everyone wants to fall in love with a novel, right? Just me? K cool.) Well, anyways, it’s safe to say I 100% fell in love with this book.
Let starts with our main gal, Iris. (don’t worry I won’t give any spoilers away) Immediately I liked her. She is a no BS kind of girl..err siren? Girl by day, siren by ocean. Let’s go with that! I guess, being a mythical creature from the depths of the ocean you might expect that person to have a little extra boost of confidence and swag, and Iris definitely does. She knows who she is, and she knows she’s powerful but at the same time, she seems so lonely and isn’t without her flaws. She’s smart, dark, and mysterious. There are a lot of things about her that I find make a very interesting and captivating character.
Then there’s Jace. New to town, surfer guy making all the girls swoon. He sets his eyes on Iris and the deal is pretty much sealed for him. He is magnetized by the mystery of Iris, the little secrets she carries on the surface (or major secret) that he knows she’s got and wants to learn. Something about her draws him in. I’ll admit he did annoy me for a split second because he is so into her and I was just like “alright calm down their buddy.” But don’t get it twisted by that, I love his character. He’s charming, funny, and protective.
What I found super refreshing about the romance between Jace and Iris is that it wasn’t instant. No, they didn’t lock eyes and immediately fall head over heels for one another and isn’t that just as refreshing as a cold glass of lemonade for once. I mean, okay, fine we can say for Jace it might have been instant, but together it slowly began to build. The way KB writes the romance felt very real to how two high schoolers would fall in love. Awkward silences, heated looks, loaded questions and all that other good stuff that comes with fresh teenage love.
And since we’re talking about the writing, I have to say it was very well written and detailed. There is a lot of knowledge about the mythology of the sirens that didn’t feel like forced writing or went on for so long that I felt like I was reading an historical text. I thought the story had a decent pace through the whole book; it was a quick read for me. The plot kept me interested, though I do wish there was just the tiniest bit about Iris and her siren life/background. All together though, I really loved and enjoyed this book. It does get me thinking I need to give more siren/mermaid books a chance. But hey, there is also book #2.
Much like a sirens prey, I was pulled in by this book. It had a completely different vibe than I was expecting, but I was really interested in the plot and the characters. I also liked the atmosphere and the bit of suspense. There is a really dark undertone, but overall it feels light and moves quickly.
Iris is a siren who has been banished to the land to hunt humans for her clan. The reason this assignment feels like a punishment instead of a job is the same reason she was sent in the first place: she cares. She has feelings. Sirens aren't supposed to feel, but Iris does. I hope it is explained further in the next book, why Iris is different. I would like to know if there is a reason or if there is truly just something different about her. I like Iris. She hides a lot because she has to, but because she is miserable also. Why bother getting close to someone you have to kill next week??
Kai Demonas quickly became one of my favorite characters. I won't spoil anything, but his perspective was very interesting to me and I enjoyed seeing that other side.
Jace. He's the new boy in town, a surfer boy, who quickly falls for Iris. I didn't think I would like having so much of the book told from Jace's perspective, but I ended up enjoying it a lot. It kept a lot of mystery in the book. I know Iris is a siren, but Jace is left trying to make sense of things while he is genuinely falling in love with her.
There is just enough family drama and personal issues thrown in to make it seem realistic, but not enough to distract from the main story.
I had some small issues with this book, mostly just things I wanted a bit more explanation on, but for the most part, I really enjoyed it.
KB Benson send me a copy for an honest review, and I'm glad I was introduced to this book. I will be continuing the series.
This book was amazing and right up my ally! *I received this book in exchange for an honest review.* This book was so good!!! It kept me engaged throughout the entire book! I finished it really quickly and enjoyed all of it. The entire book was very enthralling and even had some plot twists in it that I really enjoyed! From the very beginning, I thought that the prologue gave a really good start to kind of show how this story was going to feel but also, it’s importance in the end. Every chapter held my attention and I knew this was my type of book! I liked how outgoing and sweet Jace was and from the beginning, Jace and Iris had a connection. Although I liked Jace and Iris’ connection, I felt that in the beginning it needed a little more detail to show what really fueled their chemistry, but I really liked it all the same. I also really liked the idea of two POVs and I expected the views to go back and forth but it was nice to have a lot of Jace’s POV throughout the story and it kept it mysterious, along with Iris’ POV mixed in. I definitely would read the other books in this series especially with the ending that this book had! Overall rating: 4/5 stars Butterfly rating: ⅗ stars Book Boyfriend rating: 5/5 stars, Jace was so sweet, and I love his concern for Iris, and he everything a book boyfriend should be! Age recommendation: 13+
I'm not going to lie, I thought this was going to be a redundant book. Don't get me wrong, I love reading about sirens and anything dealing with mythology, but now a days I feel like everybody is starting to use old ideas instead of coming up with new ones. I thought this book was going to be the same. I was right and wrong.
This book has the basic concept of many books. Boy and girl fall in love even though they aren't supposed to. Girl has to kill boy. Girl doesn't want to. Now she has a choice. We all know that in these books, this choice could go either way. Well let me tell you, this book exceeded my expectations and threw me for a loop.
You literally have a mythical creature that is going through basic human teenage problems (jealousy, first love, etc.) as well as her mythical problems (killing to survive). Not only that, but tie in the Greek mythology tales and how it is explained, and you have a fantastic book. I also didn't expect it to end the way it did.In my mind, it was going to be a difficult choice but I just knew what they were going to do. NOPE!!! The choice that I thought was going to be made happened but with a HUGE twist. That cliffhanger had me on the edge of my bed screaming noooooo!!! Needless to say, I will definitely be continuing this series. I just have to find out what happens.
For me it was a 3 star read, which means I believed it's definitely worth reading even though some sections didn't hold my attention as much. Jace and Iris' story started out very strong for me - I was invested in their story and wanted to see how it would work for a siren and her prey. The middle started to drag for me a bit and then the ending really picked up! While I am a tad curious what happens next with Jace and Iris, I'm not sure I'll continue this trilogy. I am, however, excited to give KB Benson's upcoming release, Well of Eida, a chance once it releases in 2023!
I would recommend The Harvest to those who enjoy truly YA siren stories with additional mythology woven into the plot. There's clean romance, high school setting, beach side town, and hints of adventure. I think if there had been less time in Jace's pov and more time in Iris' I may have bumped this up to a 4 star read as I enjoyed reading Iris' chapters more than Jace's.
OH MY HEART.........Author K. B. Benson knows how to write a story and make you FEEL. I went through every emotion that I can think of while reading tis book. When an Author can bring out emotions like that , you know it is a GREAT book.
This story follows Iris and Jace who are High School students living in Santa Cruz. They meet in class and their relationship blossoms into a beautiful, slow burn, sweet romance. Iris has a secret though....She is a deadly siren and must deliver a body for her clan and The Harvest. Iris's song calls to her and if its released, the human who hears it will succumb to their desires...and their death.
I was so anxious while reading because I was not sure how Iris was going to get a way with not killing Jace. He was so In love with Iris that I could literally feel it while reading. Poor Iris hates what she is and my heart broke for her. I don't know how many times I teared up while reading this book. I cannot stress enough that you should GO BUY IT NOW. It is amazing and you will not be disappointed. I give the book 5 stars!
It was absolutely amazing. I was blown away by the detail and description. Her characters are so life like and you fall in love with them in an instant. K. B. Benson has a certain gift to be able to pull real emotions out of you despite it being just a book. It's like a whole other world that you can go into. K.B. Benson gave us a unique perspective into the elaborate life and mind of what more people would see as a monster, but a monster who is really quite human. This amazing book keeps you on the edge of your seat with every turn of the page. I finished the book in one day and I was up reading till Midnight because I simply couldn't put it down. I tried to step away and instantly started thinking about what would happen next and how this would happen and it was the only thing I could think about! I'm currently reading it again because I loved it so much. This is by far the best book I have ever read and I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance and fantasy.
The Harvest was an amazing book about sirens, forbidden love, and sacrifice. I thoroughly enjoyed it! It kept me engaged and the turning pages as fast as I could as the mystery slowly unfolded. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a mermaid book, so The Harvest was the perfect book to get me back into them. It’s completely clean, with sweet and clean romance! And ugh what a cliffhanger that ending was! I need the next books now!
*I received a free copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own*
Sign me up for anything that involves the ocean and the moon, and this book has both of them with a mythological twist and evil sirens.
The start however is kinda slow. A lot of chapters describe the regular life and highschool things, they make sense later and since it’s a series, the background is necessary. But the books picks up pace almost halfway through and then it is amazing!

The Harvest by KB Benson is the first book in Call of the Sirens, an engaging YA fantasy/romance series that explores what it is like for a siren to fall for her prey. Dark, alluring, and mysterious, Iris never expects to develop feelings for high school surfer Jace Jacobsen, but when she does, she finds that her secrets are harder to keep, and her devotion to her mystical family might not be as strong as it once was.
The love story between Iris and Jace develops mostly through routine high school activities, but the mystery of Iris’ secrets keeps the story alive and makes it hard to put the book down. Iris’ perspective on “mythology” keeps the story fresh and intriguing, while Jace’s passion for surfing keeps the setting alive and well-grounded. Told between the alternating narratives of Iris and Jace, the story unfolds one small detail at a time, with deliberate, well-timed precision. However, most of the story is told from Jace’s perspective with only a few, select chapters from Iris, and while I enjoyed the different perspectives, I would have preferred a single narrator or more balance between the two.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to all who enjoy YA fantasy/romance and look forward to reading the rest of the series.
Entertaining and very well written. I was hooked from the first page and I really enjoyed getting to know each of the characters! Sirens are now my new favorite mythical creatures!!
Great Story! A great paranormal romance filled with horror, romance, and adventure! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down as the story hooked me from the start. Loved the inclusion of mythology and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
Benson, you are on the road to success. Thanks for sharing your great talent with the world and inviting us to the land of the mysterious and dangerous in an unforgettable adventure. The Harvest kept me turning pages and now I'm strumming my fingers for the Hunt to release. Your work is refreshing and exciting. Keep up the great work!
Entertaining young adult read. This would be a first in all of my years of reading that I have read a story about a siren. Loved the new interpretation for sirens. Nice romance between a siren and a human. It would have been nice if it was a stand alone novel.
I wish to thank the author for a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
*A Siren isn't supposed to fall in love with their prey*
Firstly I am going to start by saying that I would recommend this book to anyone interested in young adult and fantasy, as well as mythology. For me I have only ever read 2 other books about Mythological Creatures, so it was very refreshing to read another that they weren't all "bad guys" and also welcoming them into modern day.
Iris is easily my favourite character in this book, the author has done a brilliant job of character building with Iris, because despite the fact she is considered a *murderous siren* I actually begin to sympathise with her and actually wish a happy ending for her. I just feel we didn't get to spend as much time from her point of view, and the book is more predominantly from Jace's POV then anything, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but I personally preferred reading from Iris' POV, so more of that would of been nice. Jace is the other main character of the story but considering we spend most of the book from his perspective I actually don't like him as much as I probably should of, not sure why I just personally prefer Iris. Additionally I also really like Mr Demonas, I find him to be a refreshing character who shares his knowledge with all his students and I would of liked to explore more of his and Iris' relationship, hopefully this is more noticeable in the sequels.
I usually hate love at first sight tropes but it works and makes more sense in this novel as sirens are known to be charming and beautiful, therefore it makes sense for others to fall in love with them so easily, it is part of their charm to be honest, so I have actually found a book that I like this trope in!
The ending itself is an interesting cliffhanger and it has left me wanting to read the sequel, which I am going to search for once I've submitted this review.
I feel like my only negative comments are on how predictable the twist is in regards to the beach massacre, if Jace never mentioned anything about the film, then the twist on how everyone ended up on the beach would of been more of a shock. Additionally as mentioned above personally for me it would of been good to have more chapters from Iris' POV.

First of all, thank you so much KB Benson for the ARC copy for the re-release of this trilogy! This is an honest and unbiased review, as all my reviews are.
Where to start?! I loved it, I did love it so much!
*4/5 stars!*
The Harvest was easy to read, and I devoured it in a couple of days. If you want the short version of this review, I feel like this book had massive Twilight vibes with gender roles reversed, but at the same time, it had a bit of Carrie, from Stephen King xD That is the best way I can define this book: "Twilight meets Carrie, get ready to laugh, bleed, and be hooked from page one" haha. Now, digging deeper, let's see what I loved, and what I was a little unsure about.
*What I loved:
-The use of mythology in the book seemed spotless (I know zero mythology, don't quote me on this). -The premise I found super interesting and original. -Iris, the MC, is a really likable character. -Jace, the MC, can be pretty darn cute. -The way sirens are portraited, I found it fascinating. -It's hard to put the book down, as you just NEED to know what's gonna happen next.
*Now, what I was unsure about:
-Having both POVs, I sometimes felt like I was being spoiled of what was to come. -The ending... It was all amazing until I hit the last 20% of the book. That last bit felt a bit like an info-dump, and like things were being delayed without a solid reason. -I often felt in that last bit as if things were being necessarily repeated over and over again, and I lost a little bit of my excitement. -Also, in the last 20% it seemed like the whole town had just disappeared. It was only the MCs on scene, and I got the feel as if they were doing "weird shit" and still, no one was around to be like "hey, wtf is going on there?". I don't want to say anything else about it not to turn it into a spoiler, but it just gave me weird vibes I guess.
Overall, the story was great! It was really original at least from my perspective, and I highly enjoyed it! :)
