Bredikai Cronunham is about to have some problems, along with the rest of the world of Ethra. In this tale of low fantasy and frantic adventure, our story begins with the evil drake Borghalus striving to rule over all. With the passing of the Dragonfather, the corrupt Borghalus has found the chance to escape from his long imprisonment and gather a growing number of supporters. Dangerous times loom ahead. Now, it is up to Bredikai, a killsmith who is seemingly at the end of her career, and her haphazard company to stop Borghalus from drowning the world in dragons.“The Killsmith of Etherdeign” is the first book in the series “The Children of Eberen”.
I have to say that this one took me a little longer to read than my usual picks, but I am glad I stuck with it. While I am a fan of fantasy, I am a mood reader and this was a little more high fantasy than my 'nothing but dark stories' brain could stay focused on at the moment. It was a wonderful palate cleanser though with the banter between the FMC and the DMC (dragon main character) and the banter between the FMC and her mentor. I also really liked the way that D Ertug wrote the action scenes. I have a tendency to be that person that just skims through fights because my brain reads it as "blah blah blah sword, blah blah blah dead", but this book did a wonderful job of keeping me in the action. Also, I loved that the world building was smooth and not overdone so that it was easy to picture everything as it was happening. If you like dragons and fun banter and female bad-asses, do yourself a favor and read this one.
The Dragon isn't really HERS, though. It's more like a buddy cop story, where the two main characters spend more time snarking at each other than solving the crime. It's fun to read and Bredikai is the sort of character we all secretly (or not so secretly) aspire to be: a tough, cynical badass who takes no guff from anyone. She and her weird friends-the aforementioned dragon, some undead pirates, and more-make this a highly entertaining tale.
