Trader Jim's

Rate this book
A Litrpg Merchant Tale

Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Don't be shy. Step right up. Are you looking for a story where the MC is not a do it all type? You sir! Yes, you. Do you want to see a tradesperson actually use their skills in pursuit of their craft instead of fighting to save the world? Ma'am, are you tired of the blacksmith bashing heads with their hammer instead of metal? Kid, if you're looking for a lot of action or high stakes, there is a card game being played in the tavern over yonder. If you want a story that is designed to be a simple slice of life tale that is a fun, easy, and relaxing read, then right this way folks, because Trader Jim's is for you!

Stormgion is a fantasy game world come to life and Jim is sent there by a powerful being. All the classic fantasy races live on this world but there are stats and levels as well! It is a dream come true, except technology is nonexistent as are most of the comforts of earth. Being forced into slavery or indenture is a very real possibility for the criminal and those caught by the unscrupulous. Jim decides to become a merchant after witnessing how a merchant in a village lives in comfort and luxury surrounded by servants and guards.

There are problems with that choice. Jim has nothing to sell, no money, or even knowledge of his new world. Jim discovers Stormgion is not a safe place and that he will have to travel to peddle his wares. The biggest problem is that Jim really doesn't have a clue about being a merchant. As a merchant, Jim will not have the fighting prowess of a warrior or magic like a mage. What Jim does have is his imagination and the ability to "invent" earth products in Stormgion, and profit from them if he lives long enough to do so or doesn’t get ripped off.

This was an enjoyable read, but I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it was slice of life to the extreme. The beginning of the book had some conflict and things to overcome, but by 25% in, it is just about a dude selling stuff. No real conflict was involved.

Book one

Mistakes: For its length the amount of mistakes wasn't that bad. I listed what I found on Goodreads.

Plot: Slice of life for a young man transported to a new world where he becomes a merchant.
Story was well done and kept my interest. I look forward to more adventures.

Characters: An interesting bunch. I'd read about travels with the growing family.

7/10 I'd rate it higher but the story doesn't offset the fourteen mistakes I found.

It needs an editor.

I can't count the number of times quotation marks were put in the wrong places.

Doing a bit of trimming and tightening up some dialogue would really help as well.

Also, it's very, very "slice of life". If you're looking for any sort of action or litrpg type things (levels/stats/game mechanics), this isn't the book for you.

This is my first book by this author.

It starts out fairly normal. A powerful God creates a portal to another world where stats and skills can be seen, and Jim also has the power to ressurrect after death assuming he has enough gold and/or levels to pay for it.

Once Jim arrives on the new world, he decides to be a merchant. The first 65 to 70 percent are interesting, as Jim moves around this new world facing off against various antagonists. It is the last 30% where the book begins to drag. I won't spoil why, but it took the book down a notch for me.

Overall, I enjoyed this a lot. It's a fun read and has some interesting turns of phrase, and I'm looking forward to book 2.

4/5*

Okay

This is not great if I'm honest, it is a decidedly mediocre title about a Mary sue character that never really faces any real challenges. Most everything is resolved via plot armor and deus ex machina. If these things are your cup of tea then you might enjoy this. If you dislike those things then I'd stay away.

KU Review

“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis. I hate trying to define my enjoyment and describe facets of it that would appeal to someone else. It is simply not my style. But for the sake of those fishing for clues:

Character development: good
Game elements: moderate
Harem elements: none
Summary: it’s nice to have a light hearted slice of life story now and again.

I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.

Cheers

3.5 stars. Writing was fine, but the story overall was just on this side of boring. I read the whole thing (and it was c. 800 pgs.), so it certainly wasn't bad, but there's only so exciting a book about a guy selling stuff can be.

The .5 is for somehow maintaining my interest sufficiently to finish it, and so I can round up to a 4 and not unduly punish the author for a competent but somewhat bland book. I suspect it may have been aimed at a YA market which would explain some things.

This is exactly as promised.

It is a rare thing to run across a product that delivers everything that is promised. This book does just that. If you read the description and think you might like it, this is just right for you.

As he begins to create a new character for a computer game, Jim is picked up and dropped off into a different world by a god, called Anu, that thought Jim might be useful but decided he made a mistake. Anu does give Jim a couple of boons though: the ability to resurrect and the ability to see his own character sheet.

Jim chooses to be a merchant for a luxurious lifestyle as he doesn't think he's cut out to be a warrior or adventurer... and so Jim starts to trade.

Jim meets and falls for an elf thief. Their ensuing relationship is sooooo sickly sweet that I think I caught Diabetes from this book. They made me cringe constantly. It was like the author had never been in a relationship before and was showing what Disney had taught him. It was that bad. It was that cringe worthy. Just once, stop being a simp!

Jim's relationships with his guards/friends was based on banter, which was fine as some strong friendships do start that way. But the author continued this to be the only form of friendship building he could show with Azure the dragon too.

This story reads like a pre-pubescent highschooler's first draft for an English writing class assignment, which they quickly wrote the night before it was due. Atrocious spelling and grammar, missing words, missing phrases; absolutely zero proofreading or editing was done on this. There are mistakes in almost every paragraph (if not every sentence). The pacing was all over the place.. It read like it was fulfilling the author's own fantasies too (shagging the Inn keeper's daughter in one village and then a captain of the guard in another before he meets his dream elf girl). The stats had no meaning. They were shown but never explained. For example, Jim had a Strength stat of 6 throughout. Was this an average stat for a human? There was no context to give meaning to the leveling either.

There were some good ideas and a decent story trying to show themselves from behind the terrible writing/editing but I just couldn't look past the mistakes on this one. Whilst I did enjoy reading this at times, for the majority I found it lacking in many ways... I regret spending money on this one as it is no where near a polished work of literature, or even decent LitRPG.

[Don't even get me started on the short stories included at the end... absolute trash]

Found it lacking - 2 stars

This stand-alone fantasy-adventure-into-other-world-entrepreneurship is well thought out and organized. Liked the fact that the main character did not support nor condone slavery (which is a common trope in medieval fantasy book settings). Also, liked the fact that the main character was honest, generous and proactive. The author is funny but not all of the time and not pushing it too far...the death by gnomes was probably one of the high points, that and the VRMMORPG Parody Side Note at the end...
This book has a "true romance" seldomly seen in Fantasy novel series. This book is technically an Isekai (reincarnated to another world). Yes, the adventuring is a little slow, and the business dealings are mostly "pennies" instead of "millions" which is kind of a downer at times...Main character Jim is nowhere near Over-Powered, nor does he ever pretend to have martial arts, super powers or get into a "fake" "superficial" "harem-retinue" setting...which to me, gave it integrity and realism...
Maybe the cover could have been better, maybe the gypsy-selling-wagon could have had other types of adventures and not just the "low return peddling-kind"...But overall, it is one of the better isekai, fantasy-world books out there and I found it strange that it does not have a book series...(more than this stand-alone book)...

Hmmmm...one of those books I have a hard time reviewing. THe overall story i good and I like the slow pace of the dally life. That said, the story feels disjointed, like it is a collection of many mini stories rather than a consistent book. For example, the first 50% has action and it has a few bloody scenes....but then on the second half there is none. The MC's are not likable at all, I actually liked the Guard more than the MC's. THey feel like AI rather than actual people. I also found that some of the conflict was "resolved" but didn't felt like a proper end point was reached. The best way I can define it is, as "unfinished" and open-ended. Maybe the author is planning to do a continuation book? Then the end of the book is basically a home improvement show.....and felt rushed?!?! You set your "home base" on a place people will not come in to buy? Yes it is a safe place, but you are a merchant, how much of the same products can you sell to ppl on a "closed" village? If you have the time, it is not a horrible book, but it does not live to its potential. Onto my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

An Isekai Novel.

An interesting tale of a man snatched from his world, a near future version of our own, and sent to the world of Stormgion. Once there he must make what he can of his life in this Fantasy world among the Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Orcs, and Dragons. Since he wants a life of comfort, he decides to become rich and chooses to be a Merchant to fulfill that goal.

There are many instances of typos, duplicate text, missing text, and some apparent continuity errors in this novel. Thus I deducted one star from what was otherwise an entertaining read. All of these errors are highlighted and commented upon in my Goodreads account, should the author wish to check my perceptions of his work.

This novel may appeal to fans of the wider Fantasy genre as well as to those who enjoy playing RPGs.

Decent light read.

The story is a good light hearted read. There's very little true conflict. Main character seems to luck into everything, which might have been due to the two extra points he put into luck stat.

Two major issues I had that cause me not to give five stars. First, dude shows up in a world in his 20 or 30s. Yet within a month is out leveling people who've lived there forever. If a trader has been trading for 20 years with a trader who's done it for one month, the second trader is going to walk away with pocket lint.

Secondly, please get an editer. Preferably a team of editors. The constant mistakes with quotation placement alone makes it abundantly clear this needs a few more drafts.

This story seems like a one and done story, but I do hope to read more of this world despite my complaints.

Now I need to find another smirking series to smirk.

couldn’t finish

I made it to 31% and just couldn’t keep reading. Super boring. Also, the MC thinks he is clever for “inventing” barbed fish hooks, fountain pens, bbq grills and stoves?! Barbed fish hooks are as old as fish hooks. I kept waiting for him to “invent” the wheel. Lol

Fountain pens are the only non-obvious thing he “makes” and he just has some blacksmith crank out a bunch of them?! Riiiiight.

Plus nobody tries to just take his idea and sell it themselves. They all happily agree to give him a cut.

I tried skipping to the end to see what he finally gets up to and it was all nonsensical. I’m out. Thanks.

This was an enjoyable lighthearted read. I love merchant stories, especially when the main character is generally a good person and there are plenty of good side characters. The starting was a bit rough and I almost thought about dropping the book. A few surprising twists got me interested and I just kept reading! I especially liked visiting new places and all the stuff that Jim introduced to the fantasy world based on his experiences from Earth. The romance sub-plot was nice, even if it was a bit too cheesy. Would've been a more enjoyable experience if the book had been edited better - too many typos, some repeated stuff (like too many instances of thank-yous), etc.

Wooden. Excellent bedtime reading so you get your zzzs

This book hits the sweet spot of not quite terrible enough to stop you reading, but not engaging enough to keep you awake if you are at all tired. Excellent choice if you have other stuff you need to do but know you want to read anyway.
The dialogue is pretty wooden and there's very little challenge in the plot. Smacks of wish fulfillment writing. But I am enjoying the genre more broadly (gameLitRPG) so I read it anyway. At least I got extra sleep 😴

And on the second time of reading it still didn't seem like 800 pages, I highly recommend this book. So what if there were a few editing mistakes, that's what a reader's memory and comprehension are used for, after all, editors cost money, God forbid you edit your own book because it's your first one.
It's a building book about building a business, if you want to read a book about gratuitous violence, gratuitous sex or just plain gore then read the blurb, the direction and content of this book were clearly explained without having to turn a page.

A travelling tale of tedium.

Every chapter after the first quarter of the book is just the protagonist tediously making business deals (laid out in excruciating detail that will thrill nobody except an accountant), then travelling, then pointless conversations that do nothing for the plot.

My first DNF of 2022. It is okay for a book to be bad, but it's not okay for a book to be bad and *boring*.

Love this slice of life story!

This is such a nice change from other progression stories! The characters and world building are engaging. The plot is simple but fascinating to watch play out. I can’t wait for more like this, and hope to see new lands explored with more new people and inventions. I also think this book would work well for younger readers as violence is minimal, good guys and villains are clear cut, and it wraps up happily. Loved it!

impressed

For a merchant’s tale…. This was really good. I actually read the whole book in one session. With a book this long…. That has not happened for a very long time.
Contains a nice MC that doesn’t need to be stupid alpha to be alpha. Lot of trading and some fights where he is not the ugh ugh mega barbarian. Very nice change of pace from the tales that infest Amazon.
Hope for a continuation!

Wonderful!

There are a few books that I really enjoy and I go back to them a few times a year. One is the " Bonesetter series", most of C.J.Petit's writing, and I think this story will be another one. The situations are interesting, dealing with a rock troll indeed. The bad guys are believable and I like the cooking scenes. The Dragon is depicted well, greedy about gold but with a handle on humor. Plan to re-read this one soon.

Great read and a fresh breeze

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a welcome change from the usual isekai stories. Still introducing modern amenities like indoor plumbing to a fantasy world, but not fighting everyone they meet. I liked the trader angle and it makes sense in the story. There is no patent office and you won't get a monopoly on the items you introduce.
The editing was very good. Great book!

WARNING!! This was a very easy read. I lost sleep over it. I needed to finish a chapter. I needed to finish the story. Very excited to read any future stories with Merchant Jim. You will not find dungeon diving or huge battles in this book. The title is exactly what it says it is and does it very well.

A good book

There is not a ton of action in this book. What there is is an interesting take on an isekai novel. There is action, humor, danger, greed, friendship, family, and wise draconic rulers. Well, ruler. And money making!!! Well, gold making, trading, bartering, and all-around awesomeness! It's fun; read it.

Great little Slice of Lfe

While not the action packed superhero type of story that is usual of this genre of book, it was very enjoyable.

I really enjoyed the Slice of Life aspect from a Traders point of view. I would definitely read more of this kind of story. I look forward to reading what else this author comes up with.

And now for something completely different…

What a pleasantly, relaxing, read!

After all the other books of this genre revolving around conflict. This is almost like detoxification!

Don’t go looking for twists and turns here. There are none. Just a meandering story with a feel good conclusion.

loved it

The blurb was correct; this was exactly what I needed. I do get a little tired of constantly reading stories where it’s do or die and kill or be killed every other paragraph. The world building was excellent and interesting, there was still some danger and stressful situations. I hope the author writes more stories like this.

Trade for the win

This was an entertaining litrpg. Instead of fighting it was all trade and a clever gathering of friends and family. It could be a little much in listing all the inventory at times but enjoyable enough I'd read more.

Slice of life novel

This books was surprisingly good. Well worth the read. It kept my attention for the better part of two days to read it in between work and what not. Would definitely read a sequel if this was to become a series.
