Sometimes, all it takes is perspective to appreciate the simple things, or a little extra concern for the frailty of the present moment to fully understand what makes life worth living. And sometimes, all it takes is a little shove in the right direction.
When Bobby Canfield was eleven years old, he received a message from a mysterious presence called Mac. The delivery of this message was through a Ouija board, and it would forever change Bobby's life. After all, it's not every day you find out when you are going to die.

A really interesting premise, but it was all too quick and abbreviated to strike the right chords. For a short story, I wasn’t aware of just how short it would be. I figured it would take advantage of the 75 page runtime, but instead pivoted to a completely different short story around the 2/3 point. Piece by Piece moved very quickly, and while it had some good groundwork, the characters were not developed enough and the plot was written in a way that it did itself a disservice. This type of story needed to move at a much slower pace to emphasize the dilemma of such a paranormal experience leading Bobby to know when he would die in 2022. It was also a bit puzzling why there was so much time dedicated to his daughter’s wedding, too. So I didn’t dislike my experience here, but just saw too many areas that needed further work to warrant better feedback.

While the story was quite poignant it felt a little unfinished.
The version I read included a bonus story which was also in the Manxiety collection, I think the pairing made it even more powerful so points for that.

To Whom It May Concern,

I'm going to sling a word by you. Just one word, two syllables.

It's a word that seems to have fallen out of fashion as of late; or, more accurately, the concept of the word instead of the word itself.

Are you ready?

Ok, good.

The word, ladies and gentlemen, is restraint.

No, I'm not talking about restraining orders, since those sure as hell aren't uncommon anymore. And, as much as I hate to disappoint the BDSM crowd, I'm not talking about leather attire with buckles and fasteners. I'm genuinely just talking about keeping things within limits.

Sure, outside of the aforementioned things that I wasn't alluding to, restraint is not a commonly used word. It certainly doesn't have much of a place in our current bundle-offer/BOGO/loyalty card/upsizing/refer-a-friend society.

Which is a shame. Because, honestly, sometimes restraint is exactly the thing that is needed in order to really create an incredible tale.

Which, IMHO, is exactly what Piece by Piece is. An incredible tale. And what makes it truly fall within the incredible category is that, despite being short, it packs a hell of a wallop. And THAT is what I am talking about when I mention restraint.

The concept of Piece by Piece, that of knowing the date of one's death, is a sound one. Uncommon enough that it's not treading over trampled ground. The additional elements that Daemon adds could have been expanded upon for a much larger work.

But...

That would have ultimately diminished the impact of the actual story being told. And said impact is important. It's arguably the crux of the whole endeavor. And so, by showing a little restraint, and executing a very tight and contained narrative, Daemon Manx has managed to make a little seem like a lot. Truly, Piece by Piece punches well above its weight, being more engaging and enjoyable than many books twice to three times as large.

Which, to me, is the mark of a great author. It takes talent to make someone care for a character in a minimal number of pages. It takes talent to tell a story that is imminently relatable to most people while keeping the word count down. But Mr. Manx does so with ease.

This is a story best kept under wraps, so you will find no spoilers here. No mentions of characters or plot points. Go into this one blind. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.

Short, sweet, and to the point, I daresay that Piece by Piece embodies the perfect short story. It's a little eerie, a little saccharine, a little heartfelt, and a little speculative, all while being a wholly unique concept. It'll get you in the feels, too.

The companion piece The Widower is a more straightforward horror offering. I like how it took cancer, which is already horrible and terrifying in its own right, and put a different spin on it. It's also a little bit of a haunted house tale, though that's all the insight I'm going to give. All in all, The Widower was a good little horror romp, and since Piece by Piece was less scary and more supernatural, it was good to see Daemon flexing his "spooky" literary muscles.

Piece by Piece is an easy recommend to just about anyone who is looking for a couple of tales that will make you think "well damn!".

ARC for review. Published December 22, 2021.

This short (54 pages) book consists of two horror stories, the title tale and “The Widower.” In the first, Bobby, age eleven plays with an Ouija board with three neighbors, Samantha, Naomi and Fiona (for some reason the synopsis gets some of these facts wrong.). The session reveals the fate of his life.

In the second story, following the death of his wife a man begins having bad dreams, dreams that may be coming through to real life. The first story, while it contains horror elements, was actually quite dear, and I like it a lot. The second was pretty run of the mill horror. So, strong first story, mediocre second. Still worth a look.

Excellent writing. This is a great story of how the past haunts us. Bobby’s past meets with his future. A cryptic message hangs over Bobby for years. When the past message screams NOW Bobby acts fast. Heart warming and heat wrenching, this short hits hard. I loved it!

I’m destroyed. Piece by Piece…what an amazing story. Daemon Manx is an incredible writer. This supernatural tale had me so engrossed with the storyline and the main character, Bobby, that I was just floored when everything came together. It was beautiful and horrific and I just wanted to start it over again as soon as I finished it.
Bobby was eleven when he was told what year he would die. Would you believe? Would you behave differently?
Okay seriously, go read this book. It’s short and it’s sweet.
“Sometimes , all it takes is perspective to appreciate the simple things, or a little extra concern for the frailty of the present moment to fully understand what makes life worth living.”

There was a second short(er) marvelous story at the end of the book called The Widower. Cancer is a bitch, and it’s always hungry.

I think I found another insta-buy author.

Had seen this mentioned a few times too, so grabbed this novella the other day; a novella and a short story as an added bonus.
The story revolves around Bobby who, when as a kid, is called over by three mysterious sisters playing with a Ouija board. Through the board, Bobby is told the day and year in which he will die. The story then follows Bobby as he gets older, marries and has kids and the fateful day approaches. He will die saving someone, but who and how?
Daemon Manx has crafted a great story, one can really feel the anxiety in Bobby as his time draws near wondering if what he was told was real or some kind of morbid prank.
The second story, The Widower, follows David whose wife has recently died of cancer. Shortly afterwards, he starts seeing strange things around the house, a stench that won't go away and he hears things in the basement. When he finally decides to investigate, the last thing he expected to find was that....
Two awesome stories, excellent for a quick read between novels perhaps!

Hello dear readers, it’s your old pal Skull! Today’s featured author is the one and only Daemon Manx. In 2021, he wowed us with Abigail, a great speculative novella about raising a unique child, coming to grips with one’s identity, and the healing of power of love. Not only did the surprise ending touch many readers deeply, but the story shone positive light on the LGTBQ community. It puts you in the shoes of a gay man who’s looking for real love after a difficult early life of discrimination. The author makes us feel the pain, fear, and longing for a solid partner in a very relatable way. If you haven’t yet read Abigail, I heartily encourage you to do so! And now in 2022, we have a new novella to enjoy from Daemon Manx, the man who writes with his heart. Piece By Piece, is even more gripping than its predecessor and delivers a huge emotional payoff to readers at its conclusion. It begins by totally mystifying readers, then slowly revealing small clues to the mystery as the story unfolds. Check it out.
Bobby Canfield is zooming along on his too cool for school Mongoose BMX bike and enjoying the summer of 1988 when three sisters in their pajamas encourage him to join them for a Ouija reading. Initially he resists but ends up sitting with them It doesn’t take him long to regret his choice though. A spirit named “Mac” informs Bobby that he will die an early death, gives him the exact date even. Not only that, but he’s supposed to save some people before he eats a dirt sandwich. Whoa…this is big stuff to put on an 11year old’s plate!
Manx then makes us a fly on the wall for important moments in Bobby’s life, dropping subtle clues along the way. For the most part, Bobby Canfield has a pretty sweet life, but as the years roll by, he realizes that time is growing short. Who is he supposed to save? He’s got to find out soon or risk leaving without fulfilling his destiny! Mac, the spirit of the girls’ grandfather steers the ship now and then, but Bobby’s still not exactly sure until the night of the fire. The word Now appears on the Ouija board and Bobby rockets into action. Daemon Manx writes a mighty gripping fire scene that you’re going to want to read for yourself. Nor am I going to reveal the way the story wraps up at the end. Oh, and it’ll be up to you to decide if this conclusion is an end or possibly…something else.
Damaged Skull Writer & Reviewer gives Piece by Piece a hearty 5 STAR RATING! Get this book from your favorite bookseller now, then get ready for a most excellent ride. Fans of Richard Matheson’s work will find a lot to enjoy here. If you’ve ever doubted the power of a properly connected Ouija board, the existence of spirits, and the whole Time-Space Continuum, wonder no more! This great novella from Daemon Manx and Last Waltz Publishing should set you straight. But don’t leave the party yet, horror fans. There’s a bonus story included in this fine publication. The Widower is a whole different kettle of spiders that will chill you to the bone. This is the “Holy Crap” story and the one you won’t want to go to sleep after reading because there might be something big and hairy coming up from the basement to touch your skin. Why? Because it loves you.

I finished reading Piece by Piece by Daemon Manx. This novella was so full of heart! Manx knows how to write horror with a heart and he does it well.
This is a Coming of Age story crossed with some supernatural aspects.
Bobby, an 11 year old comes across three girls with a ouija board. As he begins to play with the ouija board he gets a message from a spirit called Mac. The message is the exact year he is going to die. As life goes on, Bobby grows up and starts his own family, while that message plays in the back of his mind. To tell you more would be too much, as it would spoil the experience of reading this story.
This novella was a page turner. Between the mystery and build up I needed to find out what was going to happen to Bobby. I had no idea the twists that awaited me. Piece by Piece is such a fitting title because this story literally comes together like a puzzle. To say that I loved this story is an understatement. This is not your average ouija board story. It is so much more. I will be thinking about this one for a long time to come.
In the next story, The Widower, Manx combines grief horror with a creature feature. There are many metaphors that touch upon real life fears and what impact diseases such as cancer have on people. This one hit home as I am a cancer survivor myself.
There are two authors that come to mind if I were to describe Manx writing style. Manx writes from the heart like Chad Lutzke and delivers weird speculative dark fiction like Kealan Patrick Burke. Both authors are my favorites. I think we are going to see great things in Manx future in writing. 5 out of 5 shining stars for this gem.

Robin's Review: Another great read from Daemon Manx. His writing just sucks you in with how fluid he writes. His stories are so fantastically imaginative with rich descriptions that you feel yourself pulled into the story.

Piece by Piece

“I have discovered that life is a journey that we each must take, and the only way to find the answers is to ask the questions ourselves. No one can do it for us. It is a puzzle we must solve on our own, piece by piece.”

This was an exciting read for me. I loved how Mr. Manx made in such a short time such a vibrant and entertaining story with supernatural undertones that seem so undeniable plausible and real.

The Widower

“The noises that escaped from David’s lips were not exactly the cries of a man in pain, and they weren’t precisely the anguished wails of sorrow. The sound that David expressed as the beast drained him was much closer to that of relief.”

This story has an interesting and emotional tone to it that I found fascinating. I loved how it had a bit of an edge to it in how it was written.

I never want to pass up a book by Daemon Manx and neither should you. Always a five-star rating.

Thanks so much for an advance review copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving a review of my personal opinion.

Piece by Piece is presented as a coming-of-age story, but on the whole, it transcends that label. It is that and more. Daemon Manx has crafted an evocative tale about people, choices, and the terror of both the known and unknown.

This story is full of suspense and tension. It engages your mind, your emotions, and your senses. I found it wholly engrossing. I also found it moving. Manx’s characters and characterization draw you in, the storyline is clever and well-crafted, and the supernatural element grabs you and doesn’t let go. It’s a good story, a good read. I highly recommend it to any horror fan.

But wait. There’s more.

There’s a bonus story included.

“The Widower,” by contrast, is a full-on horror story. But in true Manx style, it is an evocative and gripping horror story. It’s a gut-wrencher. I loved Manx’s style in this one. It wrung my emotions, made me laugh out loud, and made me gasp when the completely unpredictable twist slapped me without warning. An excellent story itself. I feel the need to say thank you to the author for the gift, for bonus stories are always a gift from the author, and this one is truly appreciated.

I'm going to use the word vague to describe this story. But in no way is that a negative. The author tells a complete story without giving anything away until the very end. You get brief a-ha moments, but it's all on the character's part, the author keeps you in the dark about what has actually been discovered. That is brilliant.
I was surprised by the companion piece The Widower. That was a straight up creature feature that hit me because it involves one of my fears.

Two great stories by Daemon Manx! Piece By Piece follows Bobby's life after he receives a message from Mac through a Ouija Board that he will die in 2022. I really enjoyed the story and the completely unexpected ending. The Widower is a shorter story, but it doesn't mean I enjoyed it any less. After David's wife passes away, and he's living in his partially renovated home, he's on the hunt for what he assumes are raccoons that have managed to get into the house. What he finds is much more terrifying than a raccoon!

I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of Daemon's work!

Piece by Piece is an interesting tale that looks at that age-old question “would you want to know when you die?” However, you pose the question to someone, you always get interesting questions back. “Well, Do I know what year I die or just a month and day? Is there a time involved? Do I get to know how I die, and can I avoid it?” On and on, etc. You can formulate some of the responses for yourselves. I’m sure many of us have had this question asked of us or have asked it ourselves.
Bobby Canfield is told at a very young age when he is going to die. An experience with three little neighbor girls and their Ouija board reveals a bit more than Bobby had bargained for, so much so that he blocks it out for years, decades even as he goes about his life. Bobby is a good kid, a good son, a good student. He leaves for college, meets the love of his life, Carolyn and begins building a life a with her.
A sudden injury and a visit to his parents brings back a long-forgotten memory and Bobby begins putting the pieces back together. Slowly, he begins to understand what his message from so long ago was and what he must do.
Daemon delivers another superior short story with a very emotional undertone. While this story still fits the horror genre theme, being bone-chilling and haunting, the heart of it speaks directly to yours. At the risk of spoilers, I will leave this as it stands.
Simple, haunting, and beautifully written, 4 stars for Piece by Piece.

Bobby Canfield’s mysterious memories of his youth transpired on the night of June 26th 1988. At a young age he encounters little girls playing a strange type of board game. One that is decorated with letters, numbers, signs and words. One that allows spirits to contact the living. One that has relayed a very discouraging message to Bobby.

Piece By Piece by Daemon Manx is a short story centered around an ancient ouija board. This Splatterpunk award nominee writer takes the reader on an eerie journey where cryptic messages are not only disturbing but also reveals the frailty of life, family and business. Told in an inauspicious setting of spiritual foreboding, this author’s stained teardrop planchette controls ominous warnings and speculative truths that will literally send icy chills up the spine. The lesson has been told…appreciate the simple things in life, before it’s too late.

As an extra bonus, when you purchase Piece By Piece, you receive an additional short story of intense darkness dwelling under the floor beams, concealing itself inside the crawl space of a occupied home. If both of these conceptions of unsettling suspense sounds appealing to you, then hold your planchette delicately with fingertips and let the spirits guide you to YES. Grab your copy today!

A vivid exploration of love, mystery, and the unknown.

Piece by Piece follows the life of Bobby Canfield who is told that he must Save Them, after the year of his own death is revealed to him through a Ouija board. The mysterious and cryptic message is nearly impossible for Bobby to fathom at 11 years old, but as the years pass by, and the reality of that fateful night begins to make itself apparent, Bobby realizes that every thing the board foretold, will come true.

This short story manages to capture the essence of life’s complexities through a brief yet vivid narrative. The brisk timeline doesn’t hinder its depth; rather, it intensifies it, providing a rollercoaster of emotions and experiences condensed into a compelling read.

The story follows Bobby, a character whose journey through life is rendered with such detailed richness that readers can easily slip into his world. From the intricate descriptions of his work with fixer-uppers to the touching moments shared with his daughter Jessica, Bobby’s life is portrayed with authenticity and warmth. The patience and love Bobby shows for Jessica are depicted with such beauty that it becomes a central pillar of the narrative, making their interactions heartwarming and genuine.

Bobby’s paranormal experiences are not just spooky occurrences but are woven into the fabric of his life in a way that keeps readers questioning and anticipating what will happen next. The author excels at creating an atmosphere where the supernatural elements feel both intriguing and unsettling, leading to a suspenseful race to unravel the mystery alongside Bobby. The story keeps readers on edge, leaving them pondering the significance of each event long after the page is turned.

Ultimately, is a beautifully crafted story that blends personal growth with an exploration of life’s mysteries and horrors. It celebrates the richness of human experience, from the mundane to the extraordinary, while also leaving room for the thrill of the unknown.

In Piece by Piece, after a brief but fitting foreword by James G. Carlson, the reader meets a boy named Bobby Canfield, and the beginning focuses on the events of June 26, 1988. On that night, his sisters, Naomi, Fiona and Samantha, introduce him to an Ouija board. (Bobby is so naïve about the board that he pronounces it “owh-jah” instead of “wee-jee”.) After a basic tutorial on its inner workings, they communicate with a spirit known to them only as Grandpa. After what amounts to a conversation between the siblings and the spirit, Bobby receives two particularly cryptic messages. A request to “save them, Mac” and “2022”, the revelation of his death. After one more answer, the resulting messages cause the children to react in their own way, shedding tears and a futile search for more answers.
The book then flashes forward to certain periods in Bobby’s life. College life. A marriage to his college sweetheart. The birth of a daughter. The purchase of a house. The mention of these events helps the reader to relate and connect with the main character.
In one descriptively gruesome scene, a workshop accident causes extensive damage to his left hand. Daemon does a painstakingly good job to show the tragedy unfold and the slow process of recovery.
During certain events in Bobby’s life, he is reminded about the various messages from the Ouija board. They are so effective in their recounting that they collectively act as a sort of ill omen. During the actual devastating event when the Ouija’s messages come to life in real time, Bobby puts the pieces together and realizes what the messages were referring to. And he tries to change those events at an unusually high cost.
Part mystery and part prophecy, Piece by Piece uses seemingly normal everyday events that when combined tell its own brand of horror story. The book includes a bonus story, “The Widower”.

You always take a chance when you try a new author.

It is so nice when that chance taken turns out to be worth it.

This book contains two stories: the novella 'Piece by Piece' (50 pages) and the short story 'The Widower' (15 pages) and both stories pack a lot into a tight little punch.

'Piece by Piece' is an uncanny tale of a man who is told - in 1988, at the age of eleven, by a mysterious spirit speaking through a Ouija board - that he will die in the year 2022, and that he will die saving someone. We follow the story of his life as it progresses, as he grows up and gets married, has a child and then grandchildren. Little clues appear through the years, pieces of the mysterious puzzle coming slowly together until the night the awful prophecy comes true.

'The Widower' centers around a recently widowed man who curses his own heart for continuing to beat after the death of his beloved wife. He suffers alone in the empty house that was his wife's dream. Well... alone except for whatever it is that's causing his nightmares, leaving black bristles all over his clothes, and wafting forth a horrible smell from a closed off room on the first floor.

These stories are horror, but they're quiet, nuanced horror. The love of a man for his family sits firmly in the center of the tales, the beating heart that makes the stories thrum with life. The writing is smooth, the terror subtle, the endings both sharply intense and yet ultimately satisfying. These are stories worth reading.

Daemon Manx is hands down a genius writer. In 'Piece by Piece', his latest offering, he managed to craft two powerful and terrifying stories in under a hundred pages. I was fortunate enough to receive these stories by the author for review.

'Piece by Piece' is essentially two stories: the novella by the same name and a short story 'The Widower'. Dear reader I guarantee these two short stories are enough to evoke an array of emotions and stick with you for quite some time.

In 'Piece by Piece' a young version of the protagonist in the year 1988 finds out via a Quija board that his fate is sealed and his expiry date is in 2022. What follows is his transition through life, laced with hints, up until the completion of the dreadfull deadline.

In the chilling 'The Widower', an unfortunate recently widower, writhing in pain from the loss of his wife, comes face to face with whatever still lingers in an empty dream home.

Two beautifully written stories of horror that will keep you tangled in the wonderful atmospherics the author skilfully paints, both intense and shocking in their ending.

Hauntingly good, filled with emotions and tragic characters that brought the occasional tear to my eyes (I am a father and a husband 😉, no spoilers), this short but ultimately satisfying book is one that I have read twice because it was simply that good.

Daemon Manx is a newly discovered author for me but since reading his other book 'Abigail' and now 'Piece by Piece', I am a devoted fan.

Daemon Manx has done it again! He's given us another read I just couldn't put down. Piece By Piece takes the most essential and human questions, "What would you do if you knew when you were going to die?" And gives us the answer with heart.

Without going into spoilers, Manx writes with such detail that it tickles all of the reader's senses. We (or at least I) felt as if I were inside the story along with the main character Bobby.

Manx takes the reader on a journey. Piece By Piece It is an ethereal story about a boy, and later a man who has never forgotten the urgent and cryptic message sent to him via a ouija board.

Like his novella Abigal, Piece By Piece is a story about emotions and heart.

Manx's The Widower is also a powerful read. Where Piece By Piece can easily be about hope, the reader can just feel the despondency coming out of every pore in the Widower.

Anyone who has ever lost someone can relate to the heaviness and depression that this story conveys. emotions that can "really fuck with you."

From the grey coloring to the unfinished mess of the home, Manx creates a mood of utter melancholy.

Again this is a tale with heart because you can't help but feel for the main character in this story as well.

The Widower is darker than Piece By Piece but is still a story I could not put down.

Joss Wheaton of Buffy fame would have been proud of this one!

More please!

Ok, so ...

Daemon Manx writes some really cool short horror stories.

The first thing I read of his was last month; and that was the incredible Abigail. These two stories were my second and third ventures onto his dark terrain.

I'm happy to report that I enjoyed every moment spent there.

I enjoyed and appreciated both Piece by Piece and The Widower just as much as Abigail.

His writing shows such a great talent. He packs a lot into a little, with no wasted words. I appreciate that. He quickly sets the scene, puts us into the heads of observant characters so we can take everything in ourselves without "expo dumping" ... and just when you've got your footing , he starts turning up the creepy.

Daemon Manx writes his horror with heart, and I love my horror with a big, bloody, beating heart ... there's an authenticity and poignancy to these two stories, especially being paired up.

I'm rather selective when it comes to horror shorts, both collections and anthologies, but these stories are like refreshing palate cleansers ... Leaving you wanting more.

These are also the types of horror stories that I could see pulling people out of readings slumps.

I know Piece by Piece just pulled me out of mine.

Now excuse me while I go purchase some more of his horrors.

I'll definitely be recommending.

Three girls are riding bicycles past Bobby, an year old boy. The girls invitee Bobby to play a game with them. Their game is on an ouijia board. They end up talking to a spirit that calls Bobby Mac. Why? He finds out the year that he will die. Bobby doesn’t like it so he rejects it though he never forgets that date. Bobby grows up, has a family and realizes that he can’t forget the death date he was told. After you finish this story, you will find “The Widower.” It is a short story. The story is grief combined with horror and a “creature feature.”

The “Piece by Piece “ is a mystery with unexpected twists. I liked how the author wrote the story dealing with the person’s death date. It was amazing. In the second story,, the author writes about fears and diseases in how they may impact one (people). Both stories are creepy and chillers. They are very well written.

Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

Hmmm - how to write a review without revealing spoilers... I really wanted to like this book, but... Daemon Manx is a good writer and Piece by Piece is well written but... The first book I read by Manx (and the only other book that I've read from him so far) which is Abigail, is very good and I highly recommend it and if you like a book with a twist please check it out. Piece by Piece however, for me, didn't hit the mark. I didn't really like the characters; they felt so one dimensional and blah, boring. The premise of this story is so intriguing - being told and knowing the year of your death - I felt so much more could have been done with this, but... For me it just didn't work. It's not a long read, but I found myself losing interest. It's not my place to 'coulda, shoulda, woulda' an author's take on THEIR story, so I won't go there. I'll end by saying that this is just my opinion and that perhaps my mind set going into the story (expecting a horror-like novel) made it so that the reality was not what I was expecting - too high an expectation? Perhaps. If you are curious, please check it out, as mentioned, it isn't a long read and Manx is a good writer.

What can I say? I LOVED it ... to PIECES!!!
What can I say about this MasterPIECE?
I hardly know where to begin, so I will take a PIECEmeal approach to my commenting.
To start, I was introduced to this extraordinary author via his first work, Abigail.
That novella moved me so deeply, I instantly put his name on my MUST-READ list, and have been keeping an eye out for any new work of his.

The hallmark of powerful writing, the CenterPIECE, if you will, is drawing your reader in so deeply, that they get invested in the story and the characters.
That's the whole point of writing, right?
You need to get your readers emotionally invested in the story and cheering on the characters during victories and commiserating during disappointments.

Manx does this so effortlessly and masterfully, the minute I saw this new work, I knew it was going to be another novella to treasure.

LOVED THIS STORY and I give it 5 ENTHUSIASTIC STARS!!!!

PIECE BY PIECE by rising phenomenon, Daemon Manx is a two-fisted punch to the face.

The book opens with the titular story. Piece by Piece is an eerie tale of an ouija board (and not the kind with the Parker Brothers trademark stamped on it) whose spirit that's locked to it reveals an unsuspected user's future. This one is twisted and eerie with a pulse pounding ending.

Then, the surprise left hook, the second story, The Widower, is a straight-up creature feature so dark that it'll make your blood run cold. Check all your phobias at the door for this one, or you may get too freaked out to read the whole story.

Daemon Manx writes with a deep sense of mood and tone. He knows the darkest areas to crawl into and pull out the scariest stuff you're not ready to face. I look forward to reading more of his brooding work.

There are two stories. Both are equally great to read. The first was a psychological horror read that has to do with events stemming from 1989 coming back to haunt him in 2023. I don't want to spoil much but it has to do with an Ouija board. Imagine you are told you are going to die but you have to save someone? This is a story with one heck of a twist at the end. It's also a story that is short but sweet. Also, it gets to the point.

The second story is a creature horror. The main character, David, thinks he is being invaded by raccoons after losing his wife to cancer. However, the reality turns out to be a lot more shocking. Let's just say, death knows how to screw with you.

These were two short stories that were well executed. A nice short read that can be read in one day.
