I love roxiewrites and I definitely feel she’s amazing at putting thoughts and emotions onto paper, especially how AMAZINGLY she writes about therapy. This fic is about a bad-boy Draco Malfoy and Hermione acting as his almost-babysitter. It started out great with a lot of banter and Draco's amazing sarcastic personality, but then Draco fell in love almost instantly, which felt like too much for me. I also felt the plot got a bit boring after the 50% mark. I did like the portrayal of PTSD and anxiety stemming from past domestic abuse. I was also excited to see Viktor written as the villain of the story since almost all other fics portray him as a soft-spoken, nice, and lovely Bulgarian.
🚨 Story
Hermione works at the Ministry and gets assigned Draco Malfoy. Her job is to reform him so he can be the face of a new Ministry project focused on unifying the post-war magical world. Draco is one of the best Quidditch players in the league, but he is a womanizer with a terrible temper who regularly gets into public fights. He only goes along with the reformation project because the alternative is getting booted out of the league entirely. Hermione sees the assignment as a challenge, mostly because she never says no to work and is likely a people pleaser. She is also normally extremely fake-polite, so when she lets her guard down and gets nasty and mean to Draco for just a second before snapping back to her happy self, he gets excited.
The Minister tells them they need to spend time together outside of work so their public appearances don't look as awkward as they normally do. She begins attending his team practices, where she notices multiple times how easy it is to rile Malfoy up and make him aggressive. Later, they attend a charity event together. Hermione specifically asked him to be her plus-one because Viktor Krum, her aggressive ex-boyfriend, is attending and she needs a bodyguard. Viktor corners her alone and manhandles her, but Draco arrives just in time to save the day. Usually, Hermione relies on Harry to save her using a magical ring that alerts him to danger, but because Harry is currently out of the continent, the ring doesn't work. She confesses to Malfoy that she has never told the authorities about Viktor because she previously forged Ministry documents to help him secure illegal substances. If anyone found out, she would be fired and likely criminally charged. She hasn't even told her best friends about this, but she confides in him.
The next day, they work on a column for the Daily Prophet, and Hermione tells Draco that she doesn't care about his past. They also participate in a photo-op where they ride Draco's broom together. Afterwards, she tells Draco about Harry's idea to give him the emergency ring. Draco is surprised that she would trust him with it, but he accepts the ring and never takes it off.
During an outing, they get lost in the forest and trapped by sprites. The sprites force them to play a game of Truth or Torture, which ends up with them admitting good things about each other. Eventually, Hermione uses her corporeal Patronus to summon Hagrid for help. The heavy magic entirely depletes her magical reserves, causing her to fall asleep on Draco. Later, they practice dancing a waltz for an upcoming ball. Hermione finds herself becoming surprisingly horny and attracted to Draco, which scares her, so she decides to accept a date with another guy to distract herself. Malfoy crashes the date at the venue, and insults the man out of jealousy. Hermione leaves the venue with her date, but nothing happens between them. The next day, she goes to Draco's Quidditch training to yell at him for ruining her date, but the argument ends with them kissing.
Soon after, Draco gets hit with a minor hex and Hermione treats him. When Draco's team wins a major game, the group goes to a club to celebrate. Hermione joins them and they grind together on the dance floor. However, Daphne Greengrass arrives at the club, yells at Draco, and slaps him. Draco follows Daphne out because she has been dealing with severe mental health issues for a while, but Hermione misinterprets the situation and assumes they are dating. She immediately goes back to being cold and professional with him. When he tries to ask her what is wrong, she completely snaps, yells at him, and insults him.
They later visit a children's hospital for a project appearance. Seeing how genuinely good Draco is with the kids, Hermione tries to talk to him afterward to smooth things over. Draco simply throws her own harsh words back at her and walks away. Shortly after, Hermione falls down a flight of stairs. She uses the ring to alert Draco, who rushes to her side, gets her to the hospital, and stays with her for a few days while she recovers. She uses this time to explain her behavior, admitting she thought he and Daphne were secretly together. Draco accepts her apology and explains Daphne's ongoing mental health struggles. One day while recovering, she goes downstairs to grab the mail, and Draco panics, thinking she has been kidnapped. When she returns, she reassures him and shares more details about her past with Viktor.
As they grow closer, she accompanies him to visit the cemetery where his parents are buried. They also attend a book launch where they run into her old date again, and Draco is mean to him a second time. They talk about their future as a couple, but Hermione insists they wait until the Ministry project is fully completed so they can start a real relationship the right way. She also asks Draco to return the emergency ring so she can give it back to Harry, as Harry requested it.
At a practice pitch, Draco gets badly injured while trying to break up a fight. Hermione becomes incredibly anxious and stressed, fearing something terrible has happened to him. She lashes out in panic, which instantly hurts Draco because he realizes she automatically believed the worst of his temper instead of asking what happened. She tries to make amends the same way he did for her; instead of staying at his house, she visits him multiple times every single day to fix his healing potions and bring him food. She also gets openly jealous during an event when a female journalist tries to approach him. Realizing he needs to work on himself, Draco begins going to therapy.
One day, Hermione finds Daphne waiting for Draco outside his house. Hermione invites her inside her own home instead, and they have a long talk about therapy, Daphne's need for professional help, and how she needs to stop being obsessed with Draco. Later, Hermione attends a conference that Draco is scheduled to join later. A group of Durmstrang boys lock her inside a closet, triggering a massive panic attack. Draco finds her, scolds the boys, and holds her. A photographer catches them hugging, and the photo makes the front page of the newspapers the next morning. The Minister is thrilled because the publicity is making the project look highly successful, and he tells them to keep up the public closeness. Before Draco leaves for a week-long Quidditch exhibition in Milan, Daphne comes by to say goodbye. She tells him she is officially entering therapy and kisses him goodbye.
While Draco is away, Hermione goes to her parents' house for dinner, only to find Viktor sitting there. She realizes she never actually told her parents that they had stopped dating. Viktor immediately kidnaps her and takes her to Belgium. She tries to seduce him to lower his guard, but he catches on and becomes extremely physically violent with her. She fights back, and Draco suddenly appears to save her. She goes to the police to report the kidnapping, while Draco stays behind to completely obliterate Viktor's memories regarding the illegal Ministry documents she forged. Viktor is thrown into jail.
Harry and Ron find out about the memory modification, but they fully take Draco's side because they know he was protecting her. Draco asks both of them never to mention the memory wipe to Hermione because she would spiral if she knew they found out she isn't a perfect goody-two-shoes. Draco then explains to Hermione that he had secretly charmed his necklace with a strand of her hair to alert him if she was ever in severe distress. Hermione knows she probably should be freaked out by this, but she absolutely loves it. They officially take their relationship public after Draco wins his next Quidditch game, and Hermione moves into his house.
