About the author

Yukinobu Hoshino (in Japanese, 星野之宣) is a Japanese manga artist. In 1975, after dropping out of Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, he debuted with Kotetsu no Queen (鋼鉄のクイーン). In the same year, he won the Tezuka prize for an outstanding manga with Harukanaru Asa (はるかなる朝).

He is known for using the gekiga style to create detailed and serious science fiction stories based on American and European SF novels but creating a completely different storyline. He had also drawn various works based on ancient and pre-historic histories. Amongst other things, he is known for his graphic novel series, 2001 Nights (2001夜物語).

His work is acknowledged by the British Museum and was on display during 5 November 2009 to 3 January 2010.

Mi dispiace dare solo due stelline, perché in sé credo che l'opera meriti molto di più. Ma ci dev'essere stato qualche problema in fase di traduzione/adattamento, così come nel trascrivere i testi: tantissime frasi suonano innaturali, scollegate, collegate in maniera errata, in contraddizione fra loro, costruite in modo da travisare i concetti espressi; ho trovato refusi, mancate concordanze di genere, nomi scambiati, le stesse parole giapponesi trascritte una volta in un modo, una volta in un altro... Già i temi trattati sono molto specialistici, e sconosciuti al pubblico medio, ma con questi testi l'esperienza di lettura è stata estenuante quando non direttamente frustrante. Un vero peccato, perché la materia trattata è bellissima, così come i disegni di Hoshino.

L'ho trovato pretenzioso, pur concludendo poco. Nota sull'edizione italiana di Hikari, la carta impiegata è di altissima qualità.

This manga series was about a scholar who traveled the islands of Japan researching the origins of folklore and tales of gods. Sometimes, his adventures reflected these tales, showing how stories were told and retold.

This manga was about stories about stories. The cyclical nature of these stories meant that the best and most interesting stories get retold again and again.

If it’s a manga that has middle-aged protagonist, I’m there! As a manga reader who’s approaching that age, Professor Munakata was a relatable character. He was an academician too, another tick on the list of things in common I have with the professor.

Un manga de 7 tomos basado en las investigaciones del folklore japonés de un profesor de Universidad (Munakata), quien trata de encontrar la verdad de leyendas y mitos, usualmente relacionados con la toponimia local, a través de rastrear las influencias y relaciones entre mitos muy lejanos. Muy interesante y super documentado para quienes le gustan los cuentos de hadas (como a mí). En este primer tomo, una de las historias hace referencia a las "doncellas cisne".
