Peril has followed Lillian Crawford to distant shores, as she attempts to escape the past...
A brief stay on a cousin’s estate in the English countryside was supposed to bring respite for Lillian and her twin brother Felix. Instead, it brings danger, as an unlucky victim turns up dead at a local street fair.
Working together, can Lillian and Felix capture the murderer in time to rescue a family member from certain death?
Blythe Baker is a thirty-something bottle redhead from the South Central part of the country. When she’s not slinging words and creating new worlds and characters, she’s acting as chauffeur to her children and head groomer to her household of beloved pets.
Blythe enjoys long walks with her dog on sweaty days, grubbing in her flower garden, cooking, and ruthlessly de-cluttering her overcrowded home. She also likes binge-watching mystery shows on TV and burying herself in books about murder.
Lillian and Felix have reached England and their cousins. Things are going seemingly well. Their cousin is sympathetic but wishes to direct them towards stealing activities. However the norm is greatly disturbed when their cousin’s young son is kidnapped. The twins are once again drawn into solving a mystery, this one very personal. Lillian is determined if a bit reckless, Felix is steady but has a darkness to him. There is a brief cameo from Mr. Osbourne from the first book which was a nice tie in. A big cliffhanger which seemingly comes out of nowhere, but perhaps it will make clear why the twins were sent away from home. As the reasons for that are a bit murky still. All in all a decent read.
Lillian Crawford and her twin brother Felix have arrived in England and taken to Uncle Richard's estate in the country near London. The girl cousins fight with each other incessantly, and they seem deeply distrustful of their older American cousins. On the other hand, Felix takes an immediate interest in his 10 year old cousin William as they play chess together. When William is kidnapped, Lillian decides the police are not doing enough to find the missing boy, so she and Felix begin their own investigation. Can William be found alive? There is definitely growth in the main characters in this second book on the series.
Parts of this book are very good. I love the writing of Blithe Baker. I would rate the book 5 stars, if it was not for the fact that parts of the book have been used in a previous story. I have already ordered the next book in the series. I hope the next book will be fresh and new and not rehashed.
This series is growing on me. The storyline here is much tighter than the last, not to mention heart-wrenching, as it deals with a child being kidnapped. I thought the author executed the weaving of the plot extremely well. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
The book had more suspense and an air of crime solving. Trying to find William, Felix and Lillian’s nephew, lent a feeling of mystery and suspense. This made the story move faster as a read the book; plus Ms. Baker didn’t use a lot of “padding,” as so many mystery writers seem to do.
I enjoyed the story of the kidnapping, but I feel like she is drawing out the story of Felix and the nightmares. Please get to the point. I want to know these characters better and I don't feel that I really know anything. It's hard to be invested.
The author writes all the other characters flawed but likeable and believable. But I just can't get into the main character Lillian. I find her unlikable. The story itself isn't bad typical cosy stuff. But Lillian grow up!!
Thus was a good read, enjoyed the plot, but some Americanusms in the writing was wrong for uk in 1920s. We don't say sidewalk or precinct for police station. Other than that great
Its not a cozy mystery, more like Ellery Queen, Columbo, Agatha Christy. Great characters. The brothers sister duo works. If you like a good mystery, read this!!!!!
I love how Felix and Lilian both work together to solve the case. It keeps you guessing who is the killer or in this case kidnapper. Looking forward to the next adventure.
