Also writes under the names Célestin Valois, J.B. Livingstone, and Christopher Carter.

Christian Jacq is a French author and Egyptologist. He has written several novels about ancient Egypt, notably a five book suite about pharaoh Ramses II, a character whom Jacq admires greatly.

Jacq's interest in Egyptology began when he was thirteen, and read History of Ancient Egyptian Civilization by Jacques Pirenne. This inspired him to write his first novel. He first visited Egypt when he was seventeen, went on to study Egyptology and archaeology at the Sorbonne, and is now one of the world's leading Egyptologists.

By the time he was eighteen, he had written eight books. His first commercially successful book was Champollion the Egyptian, published in 1987. As of 2004 he has written over fifty books, including several non-fiction books on the subject of Egyptology.

He and his wife later founded the Ramses Institute, which is dedicated to creating a photographic description of Egypt for the preservation of endangered archaeological sites.

Between 1995-1997, he published his best selling five book suite Ramsès, which is today published in over twenty-five countries. Each volume encompasses one aspect of Ramesses' known historical life, woven into a fictional tapestry of the ancient world for an epic tale of love, life and deceit.

Jacq's series describes a vision of the life of the pharaoh: he has two vile power-hungry siblings, Shanaar, his decadent older brother, and Dolora, his corrupted older sister who married his teacher. In his marital life, he first has Isetnofret (Iset) as a mistress (second Great Wife), meets his true love Nefertari (first Great Wife) and after their death, gets married to Maetnefrure in his old age. Jacq gives Ramesses only three biological children: Kha'emweset, Meritamen (she being the only child of Nefertari, the two others being from Iset) and Merneptah. The other "children" are only young officials trained for government and who are nicknamed "sons of the pharaoh".

Oh my. I started this one with high hopes of a good or even excellent story for couple of my friends absolutely love his books. Well, my hopes were instantly crushed. At first I thought that the author had actually grabbed something truly interesting and that was the reason why the story was that, umm, politely put, different, but then as the book went on, it became clear that it was only boring, jumping around, not really getting anywhere.. Waste of my time, really, but I made it through. I haven't been more happy about ending of a book. Ever.

Personally I found this book very disappointing. The main character was unrelatable, the plot couldn't seem to choose between historical realism and myth and was far too convoluted and contrived. Senusret overcomes the governors far too easily. No one's speech flowed or felt natural. And the information regarding the rituals and magic felt like it had been put there merely to show off the author's knowledge of Ancient Egypt.

I'm afraid this book felt more like a rough story with as many facts about Ancient Egypt stuffed in than a well written story.

Fantastic series for anyone who loves the legends of Ancient Egypt.

This is a fantasy novel in which all of the rituals and magic in the ancient texts come true, and the forces of good and evil battle for control. It's an adventure and a romance and something quite different to what you might expect.

The style of writing makes you feel like you're reading a legend, there is a beautiful quality to it and that goes for all four books.

Abbandonato a metà.

J'aime beaucoup Christian Jacq.

Book 1 of 4 in the Osiris series. So far only OK. The topic is interesting (ancient Egypt always is) but the writing is stilted, sentences short, choppy and repetitious. Could be the translation but I don't know for sure. Yes I'll finish the other 3 books. But none of Jacq's other books, including this one, are as good as his Ramses series or his Stone of Light series - too bad.

This is Vol 1 of the series and the story didn't disappoint. The interweaving of Christian's knowledge of all things Egyptian was evident throughout the story. I kept me turning the pages reading to find out what happens next? Like all good authors the ending kept me hanging... leading to the next volume.

Be aware this book cannot not be read as a stand alone book. it has no ending and you will have to decide on accepting that you have vasted the time or to invest more. The spiritual part is full of elements in contradiction to science. One should think that the individuals are under influence of narcotics or it has nothing to do with ancient Egypt.

I was really intrigued by the first half of this book because of all the cloak-and-dagger consipiracies going on in ancient egypt, and for the acurracy of the historical ways of the egyptians and their mythology. Unfortunately the theme of conspiracy got old REALLY quick and eventually I just wanted this book to end. The characters are not well developed so you don't really care what happens to them after awhile. I wouldn't really recommend it if you're looking for adventure. Mystery lovers might find it more entertaining than I did.

A tale about an apprentice scribe kidnapped in ancient Egypt. I liked the gentle pace of the tale and how Iker's life develops in a series of unexpected events. The writer nicely captures the Gods of ancient Egypt, their relationship with their animal representatives on earth and the people's beliefs. There's a good promise of more to come and definitely an interesting tale. Perhaps too many names starting with S that it did get a bit confusing at times.
