I was captivated by word one. I'll admit, I am not the biggest fan of fantasy books, however, my husband told me to give it a try. I saw this one and thought why not?

I'm so happy that I did. I loved every bit of it. It's an exciting read that has you go through every single emotion. You really feel for Meilene.

I really hated Tork. I wanted so badly to smack him in the face every time he came around. I absolutely loved hating him. And that ending! I cannot wait to read the next book. So exciting!

I love anything with dragons and I loved that you could hear them speak and that they have such personalities all on their own.

Absolutely wonderful. This author has a new fan! I absolutely recommend this book! I could see this turned into a movie or tv show!

It feels like the author tried to write both an homage to and a retelling of the first Pern book by Anne McCaffery and fell a bit short of both attempts.

Use of an editor would not have been amiss. The flow was both stilted and to fast at times, sentences were choppy, and the conversations felt like bad commercial actors dialing in a performance at times. And if I had a penny for every time the author made sure to point out that the Meilene was 'Reina', and therefor the defacto leader of the dragons and should be listened too, I have nearly as many pennies as pages in this book.

As a quick read, it wasn't the worst book I've ever read, but it didn't captivate me.

Really enjoyable, a fast paced and engaging Dragon story. From the start this book is action packed with great storytelling and world building that immediately puts the reader into a dragon world. This is an epic dragon fantasy with memorable characters.

Meilene bonds with a dragon egg and her future changes from being a royal heir to a dragon rider. Learning to ride her dragon queen is not what she expected and she finds it challenging. I enjoyed this as it was unique and Meilene is not necessarily a typical dragon rider, she does had a self absorbed streak certainly at the start and expects others to do things for her. As the story progresses she needs to take leadership as Queen and she starts to find her place. Meilene works hard to develop into a queen along with her Queen dragon. The story builds into an amazing and unique story with trials, bonds, twists, turns, action and dragons. I loved the building relationships, it is so good. I am eagerly awaiting the next book. Well worth a read.

3.5 ⭐️

I have now started this review about five times because I don't know where to begin. I liked the book, and like is probably the most accurate word choice. It is not bad by any means, but it didn't leave me gasping for more.

The FMC is a bit stereotypical for my liking. She bonds to the most important dragon there is, one who hasn't been seen for a century. She is held back and flaunted like a piece of jewelry by the current dragon leader. She is then paired with the most crotchety man in the keep, who trains her secretly while they devise a plan to overtake the current leader and win their independence once and for all. Meilene is also not the most likable in my opinion. She was an heiress in her previous land, from which she was cut off by her father upon her bonding, and she seemingly refuses to conform or try to learn the new ways, which seems odd for someone who wants to lead it eventually. Her attitude sucks most of the time and she has a greater than thou approach just because she bonded the Reina but at no point does she show she also deserves that title.

I knew who the MMC was going to be from the beginning, but then his disappearance for most of the first half of the book bothered me. I also wish we had gotten to see a few more interactions with them. I understand that they are supposed to be mostly strangers later, but he could have still been around and her continuing to look down her nose at him would have been fun. I like him but his personality seems to be at odds with itself. While he never intended or expected to be the reinaleader his lack of confidence doesn't match what we learn about him. From all we learn about him, he's wild and maybe a little reckless and clearly doesn't lack for confidence in other aspects of his life so I needed more from him.

* The pacing of the book is a bit rough at times. There are plenty of times where the book slows to a crawl and nothing seems to happen and it is just repetitive, and then there are bursts where it picks up and things are flying at the reader left and right.
* There is not a lot of character growth. Meilene never changes, Ryland doesn't really change. They just continue to do the same thing over and over again. She is kind of a bitch and he is an insecure man afraid to make a decision and stand by it. Towards the very end he shows some spine and I was thankful for that as it bodes well for book 2.
* The way the author refers to people makes it extremely confusing at times. Sometimes we refer to a person by name, title, or relation to the speaker and it can change in the same paragraph, which made me continue to have to figure out if new people had entered the chat.
*We also don't get to see a lot of the inner workings of the place or how the "wings" are designed. They are just mentioned at times with no real explanation. And so while they refer to people as wing leader and wing second I have no idea what that means. How do these ranks work and what then are the commanders? I have questions.
*The idea too of the dragon choosing a new mate every 6 months is baffling to me and doesn't drive home the urgency for this first mating. Also, the way the mating is originally explained makes it seem like its a forever thing. But then what happens if the woman falls in love with the man and then the dragon chooses a different mate?

The story itself is interesting and I like the two battle fronts we see. The fight with the old leadership and the change to the new. It's well done in that they don't all just conform immediately. There are still outliers that are causing problems and fighting the change. I prefer that there is still dissension in the ranks and watching the new regime clean it up! I also like the battle with the Anvers and I am very excited to see how this ties into the former Queen and her sister. I know it is going to be an interesting plot point and I cannot wait!

Dragons, chaotic history? Mate bonds and grumpy x grumpy behavior.
Meilen is a princess from the foreign land of Valchar who for reasons unremarkable end up in dragon territory of the Forrde. Here while dreaming of returning to her silks ans comfy bed she's pulled from her rooms and eventually bonds with a rare golden Reina dragon. This changes her life as her father (a dragon hater) leaves her behind where she must learn to take care of her dragon and eventually lead.

Let's get right to it
Pros:
- dragons
- a cool mmc even though his nice guy behaviour was passing me off at one point
-some cool side characters I wanted to see more of and get to know a bit

Cons
There were a ton of discrepancies with this story that took it from a good one to a mediocre one quickly. Firstly there were no definitive lines drawn - Where is Valchar? Where is the Fordde why do either place matter?
- The elusive leadership of the dragon lord essentially chalked up to a disgruntled shitty school principal handing out bribes to creepy weirdos.
- Something about the overall lack of women as dragon riders made me feel icky
- missing storyline?? Like what the hell are Anvers? Where were they first sighted? What damage do they seek? Is it for feasting on humans? Or what?
- why are none of the "lords" the fordde is trying to get money from upset these things are damaging their towns? Do they just not care? Why are they lords then? Even if they didn't care they would still be pretty mad I imagine about it
- leads to my other question about the Forddes purpose???? Are they meant to be a military because if so?? They suck asssssss. And horrendously. If those people were my only defense I'd kms after reading this book.

It sucks because the underlying story was good there was a solid plot to go with, the mate bonding was good and the anxiety of it was valid, but with ther threat looming it didn't seem important? And I was confused Why they harped on it? There were just too many things missing for me.

The Dragon Queen . . .

Meilene kept hearing a voice over and over calling to her. Waking in the middle of the night, she left her bed and tried to find the source of the voice. In one more day she could go home from this place of the dragon riders. It was cold and smelled awful, nothing like her own comfortable room with silken sheets, a huge wardrobe, and servants to attend to her. They had a long trip tomorrow and she needed some sleep. She came to ornate doors and a young dragon rider guard. She felt ravenous suddenly, and pushed past him into what she knew somehow was the hatchery. The rider followed her, speaking to her yet she could not understand his words. The voice continued to call her. She passed dragon eggs but knew none were worthy. They would one day be fine dragons, but not the one for her. She knew their destinies. She climbed stairs to another section where the hay was fresh and the eggs carefully cared for. Each egg here was created for one specific soul and no one else. Another rider ran in but did not try to stop her. She stood before a large golden egg and, as she reached to touch it, it pulsed warmth and the shell began to crack.

When Meilene bonds with her dragon, her future takes her from royal heir to dragon rider. Becoming a rider will not be easy for her, but she begins to take on leadership as Queen and will ride her Queen dragon into battle. Can she gain the trust of her people to claim victory against a deadly ancient enemy? Will she find a mate worthy for her dragon to rule beside? Is it time for Meilene to claim her own destiny as ruler?

It started out good. Meilene just became worse and worse though. Also, why are you talking to the dragons out loud and causing confusion when you could talk to them in your mind because they are reading your thoughts anyways??????? That drove me crazy. The beginning also had so many time jumps and it really lost something each time it jumped. The fact that Meilene had no friends because she is so much better than all of them really makes sense too. She acts like she is the only one who knows how to lead when she literally hates everyone she leads and they hate her too. Where does this make sense? She flips out over Ryland stepping in for her because only nobody respects her. Why should they respect you? You spent years making sure nobody likes or cares about you. You have a golden dragon and that's it. Pretty sure the dragon doesn't even like her either.

Reign of the Dragon Queen by Cadence Connor is the first book in The Dragon Reign Duology. Meilene, an outsider is visiting the dragon rider's stronghold and is hearing a voice talking to her. She follows the sound of the voice and finds out that she has now bonded with a dragon, but not just any dragon, this dragon is the Dragon Queen. Her life will never be the same.

There are power plays, possible romance, battles, and having to navigate between having to find a mate to rule with her, leaving her past behind, and learning to navigate her future.

This is a fast-paced engaging story with intriguing characters and Dragons! Oh, and the dragon on the cover is absolutely stunning! 4.5-stars

I won this book in a giveaway and I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it.
Apparently it was barely edited or proof-read.
Typos ("a blimp on her long life") abound. Missing words and misstated phrases ("I'll make sure you never want anything"). Her father's voice boomed... her father's dulcet voice. Aren't booming and dulcet opposites, or is it supposed to imply irony? Let's not forget the inconsistent tenses.
I'm reporting two or three errors per page and I'm only a few pages into it, and I think that's as far as I'll go.
The spelling and grammatical errors and the simplistic dialog are getting in the way of taking the story seriously.

It was okay, needs a second pass by an editor

Good storyline
Pacing was fairly slow
Many parts weren't fleshed out as they should have been as other reviews have mentioned. The trials for instance.
Multiple words that were misused, such as qualm instead of calm.
Also, formatting issues. Multiple times throughout the book the font would change size for only a paragraph or two and then resume the former size, same with fonts. It wasn't an issue on my end because I don't mess with font size or the font type itself and it would only be like half a page messed up at a time.

Wasn't great, wasn't bad, was just okay.

DNF@ 54% No Rating.

This is heavily inspired by The Dragonriders of Pern and I adored Dragonflight but I'm just not connecting with the FMC here at all and I'm not enjoying reading her POV at all. I'm struggling with the dialogue and frustrated with some of the pacing and skipping what *I feel* were important moments for the story.

Unfortunately for this story I've committed to DNFing more aggressively as I have nearly have nearly 100 books on my Kindle TBR Alone.

Great Dragon Book Without the Spice!

This was a wonderful book that took me back to The Dragon Riders of Pern, which was one of my favorites as a kid. This is like Fourth Wing but without the spice. After reading several romantasy series, this was a breath of fresh air. There was one thing that I didn't care for about this book and the second (I suspect it will be in the next two books) and that is the amount of typos in these books. Incorrect spellings and the use of the wrong words was cringe worthy. I'm not sure if it's just on Kindle, but it was very noticeable and sometimes distracting. Overall its been a great series, and I've enjoyed it.

If I got money every time the book mentions mating or being the queen, I’d be a very rich woman. I really thought this is gonna be one of those smutty Dragon romance books because of how much “mating” was mentioned. But it turned out to be one of those fade to black romance books. I was chill with that, but most of the events were fade to black. Her training was fade to black. Her meetings with officials were fade to black. I felt like there was not a lot that we got to see. The thing that kept me reading though was the romance between the two characters. I did feel like the male character was a little undeveloped but his personality is very unique for the common romance male lead. I enjoyed the two leads banter and conversation. I also really enjoyed the dragons personalities and hierarchies. It’s not the best dragon book I’ve read nor is it the best romance book I’ve ever read, but it is kind of funny.

This book started well, but it petered out about halfway through. Meilene was a spoiled, entitled brat. She bonded with a Queen dragon while visiting the dragon rider's home. Her father disowned her and left her when she said she wanted to take her dragon with her. The current dragon lord had something against her and did everything in his power to make others hate her. She finally found a friend and mentor in the helper who was sent to her as punishment. This is where the story started to get stale, and I had trouble continuing.

Not what I expected in a good way

This story was interesting and quite sophisticated without the typical sword and sorcery tropes. Overall this was a diligent read, honestly on par with if not better than the Dragon Riders of Pern series, although the changes in perspective take some getting use too. If you are looking for some high fantasy that is not dungeons and dragons this is it.

Interesting concept, but appallingly written. How did this get through an editor? The author switches tenses mid-paragraph, and sometimes even mid-sentence. The book is littered with incomplete sentences, simple words are used incorrectly, and there are more typos than I could bear. I only finished the book because it was short and I hate abandoning books part-read, but I regret the time I wasted on it and definitely won't be reading the sequel.

Reminds me of Pern

The Pern series was my start into more adult reading and fantasy in general and this book gave me some nostalgia reading it. This story though, is unique from Pern and just as good of a read. It was good to step away from spicy romance and into a well built world of fantasy that didn't need steamy scenes to keep the pace going.

I really enjoyed the storyline of this book but at times the writing was choppy when moving between scenes and it caught me off guard and made me re-read a page over again and still have the same feeling. Overall, I liked the concept of the book but thought the writing itself could have flowed a bit better and definitely could have used heavier editing.

It was a good plot but felt poorly written. The events could have been split into 2 books- the first about Meilene adjusting to life at the Fordde and how she rose to power, and the second about the challenges she faced in her first year as Reina. Everything felt too fast and I wish there was more detail about everything. Will not be reading the rest of the series.

good plot but not finished

The plot and characters in this book are really good, but it’s highly frustrated that multiple scenes and scenarios aren’t finished. The chapter ends and you read what happened afterwards, instead of living it with the characters. The ending is also abrupt and could have been so good through the characters eyes, but we just skip right past it.

I like this trope so I was happy to skim through the unexceptional details to follow the conversations. However, when the h finally makes it beyond years of scorn and belittlement only to scorn and belittle her new H, well that's just poor form and a weak story.

I really wanted to like this story. I feel like if they'd maybe done a few rounds of editing that would have been really nice. Everyone just felt really wooden and the moved really slowly and with much less enthusiasm than I would have liked.

GoT with How To Train Your Dragon

This book was like a mix between Game of Thrones and How to Train Your Dragon. There were times where it felt like it didn't know what type of book it wanted to be. The action could have been written better.

Really good book

Loved the characters in this book. Tons of action, intrigue, some interesting locations, and dragons too. It will be interesting to see how much more of the lands history they can figure out in the next books. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it.

Interesting

It is an interesting book, it was good, but I am not sure if I will read it again so I gave it 5 stars.
It is about a girl who must to be a leader for the dragon riders. She has, of course, struggles, and she must grow up.
It is a good book to read.
