A dead man, kitten witnesses, and an animal communicator with a shady version of murder…

I’m Doctor Kallie Collins, a veterinarian and an animal communicator. An ability useful to my profession, right? Sure, until four-legged witnesses show me the beating death of a man, landing me in the sights of an ill-tempered detective out to prove what I do is mumbo-jumbo.

Did I mention the furry witnesses are two stray kittens living in a park, skilled at disappearing in a flash when they feel threatened?

Add in a new animal communicator setting up shop in town and making a splash in the media. My Spidey senses go on instant alert. Or am I just jealous?

With no clear suspects, can I locate the kittens and expose the murderer before I’m labeled a fraud, or worse, the killer comes after me?

I received a free copy of this book through VRO in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a cute read and I felt connected to Kallie and her friends. I haven’t read the first two books in the series, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment of this instalment or my ability to keep up.

The idea of being an animal communicator is fairly unusual, so it added a fun twist to the cozy mystery formula.

I only have a few shortcomings. In a murder mystery I usually expect more investigation of different possible suspects and some misdirection to keep the reader guessing.

The book could have benefited from a bit of tighter editing. There were points where it was a bit clunky. I’ve also never seen a description where a human “chuffed”, but this happened many times throughout the story and felt a bit weird to me.

Overall, a quick, fun read that made me want to see if my cats want to tell me something beyond their food dish being empty.

Doctor Kallie Collins is a veterinarian and truly loves her job. She does, however, possess a talent that makes her an asset to her patients as well as Medford’s law enforcement. Kallie communicates with animals. She is able to hear their thoughts and pick up on any number of clues to their conditions as well as clues that can lead to solving crimes. Her skills are unmatched, and there is no one else around who can do what Kallie does. And then… Evie Branagan shows up in Medford.

Undercover Kittens: A Kallie Collins Cozy Mystery, by Lisa Shay, is the third installment in the Kallie Collins Cozy Mystery series. Main character, Dr. Kallie Collins, prides herself on her ability to communicate easily with the animals she treats in her office. Depending on their willingness to share their thoughts, she is able to diagnose, treat, and prepare owners for their aftercare much more easily. She is alone in this field with her talents until the day she hears that another animal communicator has opened up shop in her little town. Word travels fast, and she soon begins to hear more than she wants about her potential competition.

The premise of Shay’s book is fascinating–a psychic veterinarian who can extract clues from animal witnesses to crimes. From the first chapter, Shay sets the stage and pulls readers into Kallie’s life as both a dedicated veterinarian and an, at times, not-so willing detective. I have to say it is a unique take on the mystery genre and does entertain as much as it engages readers.

This third installment of Shay’s series is a quick read with very few parallel storylines. Readers will be able to get straight to the heart of the matter as the action moves rapidly once the initial crime is committed. Kallie’s personal struggles are a nice addition to the main plot of the book. She is a relatable character with quirks that help readers get to know her and her friend circle quickly. It is worth noting that the cover and title can be somewhat misleading when it comes to the genre of Shay’s books. Both cover and title would lead one to believe that these stories are written with younger readers in mind, and that is simply not the case.

I highly recommend Shay’s series to any animal lover who enjoys a good mystery. Readers who have pets of their own will appreciate the research and detail Shay puts into her books. The cast of memorable characters makes the Kallie Collins Cozy Mystery series a must-read.

So glad I discovered this series

Really enjoyed this, together with books one and two. I hope there will be more. I found it an interesting concept of being able to communicate with animals, I'd love to be able to do so with my dog and two cats. I found the books well written and the characters likeable and believable, except for the ones we weren't supposed to like of course. Highly recommended.

Loved this Book

I picked this book from Kindle Unlimited because it sounded interesting and wow, it was. I have stayed up late two nights reading it. I could not put it down! Great cozy murder mystery with a twist, the vet, Kallie, can talk with her patients! The writing is stellar, it kept my interest, there was never a dull moment. I look forward to reading more from this author.

A sweet cozy mystery for animal lovers. If you enjoyed the Cat Who or Three a dog Night series, animal communicator Kallie and her team will suit you just fine. This story focuses on a newcomer with a similar “talks to the animals” skill set who tries to take Kallie’s and a mysterious set of injuries and attacks in town. Kallie uses her special connection to help solve a twisty case and restore peace to her normally quiet town.

Review through Voracious Readers Only

How I would love to be able to communicate with animals!! Kallie is one awesome vet who assists with solving mysteries when animals are involved. I was so captured from the beginning. It was an exciting read which gave me a few chuckles along the way. Evie was a character I loved to hate from the beginning. Enjoyable read, characters were great. The kittens were adorable!

I can't say enough about how exciting and compelling this book is. It was quite hard to put down in order to do anything else. It's clean with no language or sex scenes just characters that are so easy to cheer for and enjoy. Kalllie is a vet who communicates with animals and gets involved with cases helping to solve crimes. Some lovely surprises in store when you read it.
Thank you, Lisa. I'm looking forward to reading more of your tales.

fun read

Some people give synopsis of the book I’m not one of those. This is the third book in the series and it’s just as fresh, funny and intriguing as the first book if you’re looking for something that’s going to make you smile and get invested in the Storyline than this is the series for you. It’s a fun cozy mystery I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Refreshing, fun mystery

Kallie is a vet who also can communicate with animals. This book is a whodoneit whose main character reminds me of a Nancy Drew (with her always ready friends) book blended into a Hallmark Mystery movie. Loved the animal communicator section as I have had classes in this communication style and knowledge 2 people who are masters at it.

I really enjoyed the first two books in the series, so much so that I read all three back-to-back, but Undercover Kittens went beyond even those delightful reads. I loved it! Lisa Shay really hit her stride in this one and I am dying to get my hands on the not-yet-out-there 4th book in the fun series. I hope it is soon.

Quick cozy read!

The characters are continuing their development into full fledged people. The plot and verbiage are crafted well even though Sam and Gracie might be considered stereotypical friends of of Kallie.

cute, fun story!

Such a fun little story! And so sweet! I also like that she referenced Christian music artists! Only problem I had with it was the lame reason the criminal knew some stuff she couldn’t have known. But, that’s ok! I’ll happily read more of these books!!
