There are stories in the fog, too deep to penetrate without stepping in... and becoming a part of them.
In the year since the release of the bestselling TERROR NOVA, the author of the cult-classic has been roaming the countryside to promote the book, all while struggling with writer’s block that is hindering its sequel.
When the invitation comes to spend Halloween weekend at a centuries-old merchant estate for a writer’s retreat, he thinks it might be the solution to his problems.
He doesn’t expect to find that some scary stories write themselves...
Featuring twelve terrifying short stories from Newfoundland’s top talents, including the alter-ego of USA Today Bestselling author Kate Sparkes Tanith Frost ( Resurrection ), horror short-fiction master Kelley Power ( Tombstories ), the talented CH Newell, Paul Carberry ( Carcharodon ), Jon Dobbin ( The Starving ), Brad Dunne ( The Gut ), and many more!
3.5 I am so pleased that I was gifted both Terror Nova anthologies. They're both fantastic collections of Canadian / Newfoundland horror. Personally, I think the first anthology is stronger. There's a little less cohesion between the stories in Writer's Retreat, and the overarching narrative connecting the stories is weaker compared to that in the first anthology. That being said, I do appreciate how meta this one is, and all of the short stories make for a spooky and fun read. I certainly won't say no if future Terror Nova anthologies come my way.
*Full disclosure: I have a story in this collection. My review is based on the other stories included, and not my own*
Terror Nova Writers Retreat picks up where the first book left off and showcases some of the best horror writers in the province. Whether it's a story set in a deep woods cottage amongst a blizzard, a rural Newfoundland fishing village, or the depths of a cavern, this book is jam packed with chilling tales. Fans of horror need to add this book to their collection.
Newfie horror? Yes please. I liked the story connecting these even better than I did the first one - and I can’t wait to see where it goes next! I love that there’s a collection of works from talented Newfoundland writers. Every single story in this collection managed to surprise me in a way that was exciting, new and fun! Also - can we get a round of applause for the kick ass cover design of this series?? My fav story was either The Keys to the Kingdom or Ice Castle.
