I was initially drawn to this book because the story was was said to be similar to Lucinda Riley, one of my favourite authors, but the lovely cover helped too!
This is the second book in the series and even though I haven't read the first one I don't think it detracted too much from the story, itjust made me want to go back and read about the first sister's story. Eve is one of three sisters whose mother was the famous movie star Jillian Croft and their father a famous acting coach. But years after her death they discover that actually she couldn't have been their biological mother as she couldn't have children, but their father is their real father.
This book is about Eve, the middle sister, a budding architect stuck in a rut in a boring job, and a relationship she's not sure she wants to be in anymore, who decides to throw caution to the wind and accept an independent job designing a cottage for her step-mother's best friend on Washington Island.
Whilst there she ends up helping a runaway trying to get up the courage to speak to her biological father who lives there, and slowly gets to know Shelley, the taciturn lady she is designing the cottage for - and there is more to both stories than initially thought, one secret completely unexpected.
The story is set mainly in the current time, but has snippets of Jillian's diary throughout showing us her feelings and how she came to be mother to three daughters when she couldn't conceive. A very enjoyable story with some interesting characters and a slight mystery running through it. I look forward to the next in this series, and will be going back to read the first book too. A really good read.
This was a fantastic read and one I thoroughly enjoyed.
I read a lot of books, but I don't often come across a book where a character's personality matches mine so completely. This happened in this book with both Eve and Shelley. Both are introverted and some of the issues they had when it comes to interacting with people couldn't have been more relatable! As I read, I found myself nodding along with Eve and totally understanding where she was coming from.
I loved Eve especially as she was an architect and architecture being a subject I'm quite intrigued by. Shelley was great too, what with her weird sense of humour. I loved the relationship that blossomed between her and Eve. Then there was a Abigail, who was hilarious. I loved how she just came out and asked questions and said what she thought without worrying about filters!
Matt, Eve's boyfriend, I found way too controlling. I get he had his issues, but honestly I felt he was just bringing Eve down and thought she was too good for him. Clayton on the other hand...now everyone needs a Clayton in their life. He was amazing!
Oh, and although I'm not keen on pets, I have to mention Eve's dog, Marx...his reaction when Eve, Abigail or anyone else got upset (crying) was hilarious!
Talking of hilarious, I loved the humour in this book, which had me laughing out loud at times!
On the whole a thoroughly enjoyable read, with well written characters, who were so easily likeable and relatable.
Thank you to NetGalley, Muna Shehadi, and publishers, Headline Review for the chance to read this book.
This was a nice easy book to read and I did enjoy it. I liked it enough to want to check out the other two books in the series.
I liked the way the book was written with each chapter starting with an excerpt from Jillian Croft's diary. This gave the reader an insight into her character and why she did what she did to have her daughters.
This is book 2 in the series but I haven't read any of the others but I don't think that matters as the story stands alone very well.
I enjoyed the descriptions of Washington Island in Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. I have to admit that Wisconsin is not my favorite state but it is slightly more interesting than Minnesota. It does seem that Washington island is to be enjoyed for its scenery and not a lot more.
The characters do travel to other parts of the USA, like Maine and the descriptions do bring the places to life.
The characters are not black and white but some do have some very offbeat ideas - Abigail's Dads for example who seems to be an ultra right-wing 'Christian' who is unpleasant and controlling.
I haven't read any of this author's work before but would be happy to do so in future.
In this, the second instalment of the Fortune’s Daughter’s Trilogy, we follow the story of Eve - an architect and the youngest daughter of a now deceased film star, raised in opulence and privilege, who has only recently discovered that her family background is rather more complicated that might have been assumed.
As Eve finds herself flagging in her relationship, treading water in her career and struggling with a terrible secret that could destroy what remains of her family, she travels to Washington Island for work, and meets three people who could change her life forever.
Really beautifully told, this story is packed with detail, believable characters, wonderful imagery and some very funny lines. I hadn’t actually read the first part of the story when I picked this book up, but it works perfectly well as a standalone novel.
That said, I fully intend to set off in search of Private Lives (Fortune’s Daughters Trilogy #1) now.
Postanawia skorzystać z propozycji swojej macochy i wyjechać do jej przyjaciółki by zaprojektować dom.
My first journey into Muna Shehadi's stories and what a first story to read. I will be purchasing the first book in the trilogy and hope I'm lucky enough to get a Netgalley copy of the Olivia's life. Hidden Truths is just that - about hidden Truths, telling Eve's version of life and what happened with some other ribs going on which are really well thought out. I feel this tale is very apt and on point. I loved it
When I started reading this book, I wasn't aware that it was a sequel, however it can easily be read as a standalone novel too. The storyline was intricate and intriguing, and the family dynamics added an extra depth to an already wonderful story. The story flowed beautifully from the start, and kept me interest piqued until the very end. I would certainly recommend this book to others.
Somehow I got mixed up and read #2 of this trilogy first, but I didn't even notice. This is such a wise and wonderful stand-alone story of family secrets, sister love, complicated relationships, and one protagonist's evolution towards opening her heart and soul. Beautifully written, with characters that stick with you and an unusual setting in remote Wisconsin that will make you want to visit.
An easy read full of family drama. The setting by the lake is inviting, the characters interesting enough. The family secrects show up in diary excerpts throughout the long chapters. Good writing but too slow paced for my liking.
It was a nice book but I missed a lot. The story wasn’t totally for me I think. I loved that eve found some inner peace but the end left me with so many questions. And the story dragged on sometimes. Still it’s a nice book and now I know eve her story. On to the next and last sister.
