Rate this book
A hot-headed thrash metal bassist struggles with his abusive family history that's affecting his future with House Songstress girlfriend. World-renowned, Ramiro Espinoza, the bassist/vocalist of the Heavy Metal band "IRATE" seemed to have it all on stage. But backstage, his life was far from perfect. Ramiro grew up in home, where his Jesus-freak father constantly tried to put the fear of God into him, his sister, and mother. At the same time, they endured physical and emotional abuse at the hands of this mad man. Rock/Heavy Metal was an outlet for Ramiro, where he learned to play bass guitar and finally found his voice to sing. He wrote lyrics about his bad relationship with his father and other things in the world that vexed him. He and two bandmates formed a trio with an aggressive, fast sound that captivated listeners in the millions. His fiance, Noelle, an African-American House Songstress gave up gigs singing in small venues in New York to tour with Ramiro around the world. While on their journey, Ramiro repeated the same abusive patterns that his father projected on him to Noelle. He'd belittle her before everyone and even got physical. Without hesitation, she left Ramiro right in the middle of his tour. He knew he couldn't fight his demons alone, so his management arranged for a counselor to tour with this Metal god, holding sessions between shows. Ramiro had to make things right, so Noelle would walk down the aisle. But the man His father) who made his life a living hell as a child, resurfaced to annihilate his future. Ramiro must confront this demon in human form.

Alexis Johnson’s Irate: A Rocker’s Raging Romance is a raw and compelling exploration of the shadows that fame cannot erase. At its core, this novel is about Ramiro Espinoza, a thrash metal bassist and vocalist who battles the ghosts of an abusive upbringing while trying to salvage his relationship with his fiancée, Noelle, a talented House Songstress.

The book masterfully captures the stark contrasts in Ramiro's life: the adrenaline-fueled highs of being a world-renowned rock star and the deep emotional lows rooted in his traumatic past. Johnson doesn’t shy away from portraying the darker sides of fame, including Ramiro’s struggle to break free from the cycle of abuse inflicted by his father—a figure who casts a long and destructive shadow over his life.

The dynamic between Ramiro and Noelle is both captivating and heartbreaking. As Noelle bravely steps away from the toxic relationship, her strength becomes a beacon of hope, pushing Ramiro to confront his inner demons and seek professional help. Their journey, fraught with pain and redemption, serves as the emotional anchor of the story.

The reemergence of Ramiro’s abusive father adds tension and stakes to the narrative, forcing him to face his past head-on. This confrontation becomes a pivotal moment in his quest to heal and make amends, particularly with Noelle.

While the storyline occasionally leans on repetitive patterns, the depth of the characters and their complex emotional arcs more than make up for it. The narrative’s intensity and authenticity draw readers in, keeping them invested in Ramiro’s tumultuous journey.

Irate: A Rocker’s Raging Romance is a bold and evocative novel that delves into the raw realities of abuse, the redemptive power of love, and the courage it takes to change. For readers who enjoy dark, character-driven stories, this book is a must-read.

I'm a digger for well-written contemporary romances. And Irate by Alexis Soleil is exactly that! It is a rockstar romance that builds on the blocks of drama and emotion and amalgamates the themes of passion, humor, trauma, and suspense in its storytelling. One thing that romance novels often suffer from are lack of character development, and I'm impressed how the author has crafted her characters here. Her characters and the relationships among them are layered. The supporting characters, too, have a depth to them. The story is engaging and I enjoyed how organically the story between Ramiro and Noelle is developed. Recommended.
