Jemma hasn’t been to the tiny Rocky Mountain town of Clear Creek in years, but when her grandmother tells her something strange is going on, Jemma drops everything to return and help untangle the clues.
She arrives to flashing lights, a house full of police, and the news that her grandmother has been killed with her own yarn. After learning she inherits everything, Jemma is faced with the choice of casting on a new life by reopening her grandmother’s yarn shop, or returning to her live-out-of-a-suitcase life as a travel vlogger.
One thing’s for sure — she’s not leaving town until the mystery of her grandmother’s death has unraveled. But when the deputy in charge of the investigation ignores clues Jemma stumbles upon, she decides to do her own poking around. Because her grandmother was right — there is something strange happening in Clear Creek.
Rebecca McKinnon enjoys playing with her imaginary friends and introducing them to others through her writing. She dreams of living in the middle of nowhere, but has been unable to find an acceptable location that wouldn’t require crossing an ocean.
Travel vlogger Jemma Whitlock returns to Clear Creek after being gone for several years in response to her grandmother’s plea for help. All she knows is that “something strange” is happening in her grandmother’s life and it must be something major for her to call her home. But Jemma arrives too late. She arrives in town to find police everywhere and is told her grandmother is dead and the killer used yarn from her grandmother’s own shop to do the deed.
Still in shock, she learns she is the beneficiary of all her grandmother’s things so she has some major decisions to make. She has some time because she isn’t going anywhere until the killer is found and behind bars. Especially because the local police seem to be oblivious to some clear clues and suspects. Realizing there truly is “something strange” afoot in Clear Creek she decides to do a little snooping on her own never realizing she may find herself entangled in the killer’s web and that she may not be able to knit, crochet, or vlog herself out of the danger she finds herself in.
The author has created some great characters for this new cozy mystery series. First, Jemma’s grandmother Mary sounds like she was an amazing woman. She listened and helped everyone she could, really putting the small town of Clear Creek first even though not everyone appreciated her efforts. Jemma is well-traveled and very independent. It is hard for her to accept help but is a coffee addict and her old friend Brandon is her hookup for the best beans. He also cares about his friend Jemma and will do anything to protect her. Emmiline hales from the South and is new to Clear Creek. She and Jemma meet when both are traveling to the cozy little town. They become fast friends. Charlotte was her grandmother’s employee. She is clearly enamored with Brandon who clearly isn’t interested. She doesn’t like that Jemma and Brandon immediately step right back into their old friendship. We meet Kitty who was Jemma’s BFF but they lost touch over the years. She is excited to rekindle that friendship. Then you have Granny who knows everything about everybody and demands to be involved in everything. She is positively hilarious. Deputy Chase can be frustrating but he really tries hard to do his job even though it seems to take forever. All these characters are interesting and feel genuine for the time and place. Their interactions and dialogues all ring true. Oh! Mary had a cat too! A Selkirk Rex cat who is quite the kitty.
Ms. McKinnon has set this series in an interesting small town that is in the midst of reinventing itself into a shopping destination now that it is in the shadows of a new resort just a few miles away. Not everyone is happy about the changes which is typical of any small town. I loved the way the town rallies around Jemma making her feel at home and helping her through her grief. Her grandmother’s yarn shop sounds like a wonderful place. From all the yarns in baskets and cubbies to the table where people could meet to work on their projects, pick out new patterns, and met with friends to talk crafts or talk about events of the day and maybe even gossip a little. Every successful craft shop has to have a table like that.
The mystery was well-plotted with two people landing at the top of my personal suspect list pretty early. I was delighted by the way the mystery unfolded with clues that had me rethinking my theories quite a few times especially when another body is found. I did keep coming back to both characters even though my motives for them were a little muddy. I loved the way the final clue was glaring and surprising to Jemma. The reveal became very exciting! The motive turned out to be pretty complicated and not at all what I had imagined at all which I should have known was too basic.
Ms. McKinnon has set her series about to a spectacular start. The mystery was complex and the characters were engaging. Plus I am a sucker for a yarn shop theme. That theme and the series location remind me of Maggie Sefton’s Knitting Series that ended in 2018. Like that series, this author has a fantastic cast of characters and I am excited to visit them again and again. I also need to see if Jemma’s and Brandon’s relationship goes where I hope it does.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
This book is so much fun! We meet Jemma just as she arrives from Africa to visit with her grandmother that asked her to come. Upon arrival she is greeted with the house surrounded by emergency personal along with law enforcement. This makes for quite the scene as she discovers that grandma is dead leaving her everything. She owned an adorable yarn shop full of treasures which Kora has to decide if she will run it or some other option. Before she can do that though she has to figure out what happened because something hinky is definitely going on in town. This makes for a fun read as the mystery plays out. Kora is fun character to follow and I may not be a knitter or anything but that aspect of the story was full of charm making the reader feel right at home. I especially loved all of the intriguing tidbits about the special yarns with their unique origins. A must read for cozy fans and those that just love yarn. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
Jemma Whitlock has been traveling for the last fifteen years for her vlog. She comes home after a call from Mary, her grandmother, saying that something is wrong. Unfortunately, Jemma arrives too late. Mary is dead and the deputy in charge of the case places Jemma on the suspect list. Unfortunately, another person ends up dead in front of Mary’s yarn shop. Jemma is the prime suspect. Jemma with help from new and old friends sets out to do a little investigating. The killer, though, does not appreciate her snooping and attempts to warn her off. Can Jemma unravel the clues before she the next target on the killer’s twisted hit list? The Yarn that Binds by Rebecca McKinnon is the debut of the Clear Creek Mysteries. This is a charming cozy mystery. I liked the authors writing style which made the story easy to read. I enjoyed getting to know Jemma as well as Brandon, Emmeline, Granny, and Kitty. The characters are friendly (most of them) and relatable. Jemma is a modern woman who loves technology. She can be a touch headstrong at times, but she has a good heart. I like that we also get to see her vulnerable side. Jemma is a coffee addict, but she only likes quality coffee beans. Brandon knew Jemma growing up. You can tell that he cares for Jemma and wants to protect her. Brandon brews quality coffee but he refuses to tell Jemma where he gets his beans. It is one way to ensure that she keeps in touch and a reason for him to visit her. I love how Brandon kept trying to evade Charlotte. Emmeline is a Southern bell that Jemma meets on the bus to Clear Creek. I love her quaint Southernisms. She has a few that I had not heard previously. Kitty was Jemma’s best friend growing up, but Jemma failed to keep in touch. Kitty has lost her zest for life and appears scared at times. It is obvious that Kitty needs some female friends. Granny is a hoot. She has more energy than women in their twenties. She adds liveliness and humor to the story. I enjoyed the descriptions of Clear Creek (sounds like a great town to visit). Mary worked hard to revitalize Clear Creek so they could attract tourists. The mystery had two victims and a few threats. There are a handful of suspects and a red herring (or two). Jemma does ask questions around town and she gets intel from her new circle of friends. I am not a fan of Deputy Chase. I did not like his attitude and the way he treated Jemma. I wish he had been a friendlier small-town cop. I was able to solve this whodunit early in the story, but I did not know the why until later. I liked the reveal scene. There are wonderful yarn descriptions in the book. Jemma found beautiful fibers on her travels. I enjoyed reading The Yarn that Binds. I look forward to my next visit to Clear Creek. The Yarn that Binds is a crafty cozy with fun fibers, a gone grandmother, a dogged deputy, a disrespectful developer, a lofty fence, a plethora of patterns, and a vlogger investigator.
This new series will have you reaching for knitting needles and some new fun yarn.
Jemma is heading to this little town in CO to see why her Grandmother might want her help but she arrives to find her grandmother has been murdered. The police aren't acting fast enough for Jemma's taste and she decides to do some sleuthing of her own.
I thought it rather humorous that she has arrived from Africa but the police detective in charge seems to think she should be a suspect. Not sure when he thinks she would have had time to kill her grandmother when she was with someone the entire way to the town.
Jemma also reconnects with a few friends from her days there which is good because they help her sort through the clues but it isn't until Jemma finds herself in a predicament does the truth reveals itself. I was quite surprised at who the killer turned out to be but I suspected this character towards the end but couldn't put my finger on anything. The "why" was complex and it involved other characters for various reasons.
I loved the descriptions of all the yarn, especially the special ones that Jemma sent her grandmother over the years. I found it intriguing that nearly the whole town could be found knitting at one time or another, but perhaps it was the way they all decompressed.
Jemma and Chase feel some chemistry and I think we can see a relationship blossom between these two going forward.
I think this is going to be a good new cozy series and we give it 5 paws up.
THE YARN THAT BINDS by Rebecca McKinnon The First Clear Creek Mystery
After a call from her grandmother that something strange is going on travel vlogger Jemma Whitlock returns to the town where she spent most of the summers of her youth. Instead of a happy reunion Jemma returns to a crime scene. Her grandmother has been murdered in her own yarn shop. Could the too slick man from the shuttle have something to do with it? Or Mary's neighbor who's making snide comments from behind a too tall fence? Why kill Mary? Is Jemma's life in danger as well?
Jemma faces a lot of difficult choices in this, the first Clear Creek Mystery. With her grandmother's death she must decide if she wants to stay in Clear Creek or return to her vagabond life. Can she make a go of her grandmother's yearn shop and finally put down roots? Is she ready to develop friendships and perhaps turn one into something more? The characters are what really make the book stand out. Jemma is headstrong, yet sometimes vulnerable, able to stand up for herself, yet knowing when to ask for and accept help. Brandon running away from Charlotte always made me chuckle, while the change Jemma found in Kitty made me concerned. Granny is a hoot and a half and I love Emmilene's expressions and good heart.
I liked how the mystery progressed. Though Jemma left most of the detecting to the police, she didn't mind nosing around a bit herself, aided by a few friends. Multiple suspects and an uncertain motive made for an entertaining puzzle. Although I had my suspicions, I wasn't certain who the murderer was until the very end.
A touch of humor, a dash of romance, and an intriguing mystery make THE YARN THAT BINDS a solid start to a charming new series.
The Yarn that Binds is the kind of book you'll want to curl up on the couch with and read until you've turned the last page! The charming setting, twisting mystery, and spectacular cast of characters had me totally engaged with the story from beginning to end.
I won't go into a lot of detail, because I want you to experience this book for yourself. But I love Jemma. She's a great MC we instantly root for. Also, I'm a sucker for romance, and there's a subtle romance to enjoy with an AMAZING male lead. (Brandon, you stole my heart!)
The town itself is like another character. I delighted in all the clever shop names, and all the details that made me feel like I was walking those streets with Jemma. I will also say that Emmeline is an amazingly funny character, and I loved every scene with Granny!
Also, I don't knit, but now I kind of want to. All the details about the yarns in the yarn shop, and the knitting--it was just fun and the details were very real.
I'm so glad this was book one in the series, because that means there will be more adventures to enjoy in this lovely world.
This was my first cozy mystery, and all I can say is I've found a new genre to love!
The Yarn That Binds is a perfectly fun cozy mystery with a lovely small town setting that would be a wonderful place to call home. The characters were enduring and spunky. Jemma comes to Clear Creek to visit her grandmother Mary who is murdered. A lot of twists and turns kept the story moving. Along with the heart and friendship of a small town. And the handsome, helpful Brandon was also a treat. I’m excited for the next book in the series.
I received an ebook from the author. All views and opinions expressed are my own.
I enjoyed the mystery and the characters. There were some time/transition issues but the story was good enough that I could overlook it for the most part. Read my full review at Girl Who Reads.
I've never ready a cozy mystery before but thoroughly enjoyed this one by Author McKinnon. My favorite thing is small towns with a charm you don't expect in the real world and a romance that makes you smile and this was just that!
I love trying to guess the endings and when I really get into it, I will find myself seeking out the author to message them. I did just that with this author and she responded and it made this read even more enjoyable to shoot messages back and forth.
I won't give spoilers but will say this charming town of Clear Creek and those who reside within gave me the same fuzzy feeling as Stars Hollow and the people who live there in the show Gilmore Girls does. My favorites were Emmilene and laughed out loud at some of the things she would say, like, "I'm madder than a mule chewing bumblebees!" I loved that the community was so small and close knit that when giving directions the would use the colors of the houses - "turn right at the pink house" it made me smile.
I loved Jemma and how she lived as if the world was given to her just to explore and discover all the beauty it had. She lived without luxury and owned just enough to travel with, except her lipstick collection which seems as vast as Gwen Stefani and Mariah Carey's show closets!
Other characters who were easy to love were Kitty and Granny who were absolutely adorable and I think there is enough mystery between the two of them that they may take center stage in a book or two for this series.
Last, but far from least is Brandon, whose protective personality made it easy to fall for him. He wasn't smothering but always seemed to be there when he was needed, as if his soul was connected to Jemma's and could feel when she needed him. He was as perfect as the coffee bean stash he shares with Jemma and I hope to learn the secrets he holds in making the perfect cup of coffee and mouth watering tacos!
This book, let me tell ya... It's the typical cozy mystery: the protagonists returns home, inherits the family business, and ends up a murd3r suspect. Every other cozy has this premise. BUT! What made this book stand out was: - The writing. Smooth and compelling. - The FMC. Often, cozies have either an over-the-top or super quirky lead, but Jemma was 100% normal. Just a nice, highly relatable woman. Loved her so much. - The road to the culprit. I had a good inkling of who it was from the start, but the author did such a tremendous job of making me suspicious of e.v.e.r.y.o.n.e. that I questioned everything I thought I knew about the story.
Can't recommend enough!
✔️ Cozy Mystery ✔️ Romantic Subplot (friends-to-lovers & protector tropes; closed door but amazing book boyfriend) ✔️ Close-knit Community ✔️ Amateur Sleuth
It's the first book in the series, so I'll give it a second book to see what I think. In this book, we have a female protagonist whose brain is full of lipstick colors. I dislike the inability to cook. The no knitting knowledge is excusable as she is getting lessons. Several of the characters were flat in aspect and I'm hoping to get to know them better in book 2.
I did like that there were very few diet culture references in the book. But she really needs to smarten up. Surely if she made her living as a vlog writer for 15 years she has some logic in her??
I see a lot of really positive ratings for this book, so hopefully the series will grow on me.
I love a good cozy mystery. I really liked Jemma a lot - I swear her and I would have been friends if we knew each other in person. The author does such a good job of engaging the reader and making the entire town seem like a place I wish I could live. I really enjoyed how the mystery played out. It felt like a whodunit kind of mystery. Emmilene was another star character to me, and I really liked how she connected with Jemma and helped her throughout the whole event of her grandmother's death. This is such a charming read, I absolutely recommend it!
Yarn that Binds is an Excellent story about Gemma Whitlock a Travel Blogger who goes to visit her Grandmother. But when she arrived she found her Grandmother had been Murdered. Her friend Brandon Sharp helped and protected her. There are many twists and turns throughout the story and some surprising events. But what will be the outcome? Superb book and start of a series that I enjoyed reading and I highly recommend that you read.
I loved the world-building of this idyllic town and how the neighbors all pitch in to help each other. I almost immediately guessed the killer (and was right), but I enjoyed the twists on the way to the reveal. I did find Jemma's lipstick name-dropping annoying. It might have made more sense if she was a beauty and not a travel vlogger.
The small mining town with a coming home story, a touch of budding romance and of course let's not forget the bodies that turn up. Loved this story very much! Looking forward to the next!
cute and cozy, it was a quick read. though sometimes i wished for a bit of filler in the beginning. i felt like there were lots of things established very quickly but were written like they might have had time pass between them without saying so
I figured out the who done it too quickly, but the motive took a while. Disappointed that a knitting novel doesn't have a pattern available or linked to a knitting SMS. Ok for a quick change up or palette cleanser.
A well-paced story in a charming setting, with interesting characters (and a wonderful kitty), along with a murder mystery with a not-so-obvious killer.
It was a super easy read that I really enjoyed, especially because I am a fiber artist and work with yarn all the time, it was just missing some substance for me personally. I think the characters were really well developed, but the romance part of the book kind of just had me wanting more. It took a long time for the two people who are involved in the book to actually get together which just got me annoyed. If the romance was sped up I think I definitely would have given this book a higher rating. Overall I really enjoyed this book, a small town mystery where gossip is constantly stirring, yes please! I would definitely read another book by this author and don’t regret my decision to read.
