Lucky Leap Day

Rate this book
7 hours, 57 minutes

Up-and-coming screenwriter Cara Kennedy has the biggest meeting of her career in two days — but for now, she's on vacation. Her short trip to Ireland is all planned out: 1. See the sites around Dublin. 2. Don't think about the jerk of an ex she was supposed to spend this trip with. 3. Relax with some Irish whiskey. 4. Propose to a sexy Irish musician on Leap Day. 5. Wake up married.

Wait, those last two things weren't on her list....

A whirlwind trip to Ireland is supposed to end with a suitcase full of wool sweaters and souvenir pint glasses — not a husband you only just met! Now, her flight is in four hours, and that meeting is in exactly two days — nothing she can do except take her new husband (and his adorable dog) back to LA with her and try to untangle the mess she's made of her life....

Thank you to the publisher for sending me a free book

If it wasn't for one line, this book would have been fine. Not memorable, the humor wasn't for me, but I imagine other people would enjoy it.

But then that one line.

Context: Finn and Cara are flying to LA and want to take a dog, Oscar, with them last minute.
"Convincing the airline that Oscar was Cara's therapy dog was a bit trickier. In the end, Oscar's affection for her combined with her slight panic attack-- that she didn't even have to fake thanks to the day she was having-- was enough to convince the desk agent that there had been some mistake in the paperwork and that the needy pup was, in fact, her support animal."

Why did this line bother me?

First off, I don't like panic attacks being treated as a joke. That should be self-explanatory.

Secondly, I previously was a service dog trainer and handler, and faking a "therapy dog" is something that I can’t stand in real life, let alone in fiction when it's completely avoidable. They could have just paid for the dog to fly.

First, let's talk about the term used here: "therapy dog". There are 3 main kinds of working dogs that often get confused, and I think that is what happened here.
- Therapy dogs are well-trained dogs that visit hospitals, assisted living centers, etc. They often must pass a test in order to be considered a therapy dog, and other than for their visits, they have no special public access rights.
- Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are untrained dogs that are prescribed by a doctor. They do exactly what their name suggests- they are emotional support, and they do their job well. Legally, they can fly with you, or stay in otherwise pet-free apartments with you, however they don't have full public access rights.
- Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSDs) (as well as other types of service dogs) are highly trained dogs that are considered medical equipment. They require years of training and must perform a task (or multiple) to assist their handler with their disability.

The book used the term therapy dog, but I think they meant ESA, or possibly PSD.

Now why is faking an ESA or PSD is this such a bad thing?

In real life, this can be very dangerous.

When people fake PSDs, they often buy fake certificates online and show them to store managers and airline employees to get public access. Real service dog handlers don't usually have any specific paperwork proving their dog is a real service dog, but these employees have been told that a real service dog has paperwork, real service dogs are then illegally denied access.

Also, fake service dogs give real service dogs a bad name, same with fake ESAs. Oftentimes these fake service dogs and fake ESAs behave poorly, and then everyone assumes that every service dog or ESA they meet is fake and will behave poorly. This causes further access issues, as well as is a source of stress on the handlers.

And finally, fake service dogs, fake ESAs, and ESAs in places where they aren't supposed to be is dangerous. Poorly behaved dogs in places where they're not supposed to be can be a distraction for service dogs, and any distraction can be deadly for the handler that requires that dog's attention. Also, service dogs are trained to be non-aggressive, which means if an untrained dog sees them and tries to attack them? They might get hurt. Not only is that horrible because your dog is injured, but, as mentioned before, that can cause problems for the handler who relies on their dog. If that dog has to retire, getting a new dog isn't easy. It will take either 2+ years of owner training a brand new dog, or $5,000-30,000 to buy one trained by a program (and no, insurance won't cover that for you).

I recognize this line was just supposed to be lighthearted, but this is a real issue that not enough people take seriously.

Lucky Leap Day by Ann Marie Walker
Contemporary romantic comedy.
Cara takes a short trip to Dublin for a conference even though she knows her ex boyfriend will be there. Her ride share driver gives her his sweater and the two meet and get to know each other over the next three days. Up to and including her whiskey drinking leap day proposal that changes their lives quickly as they next fly to Malibu, CA to deal with their unexpected marriage.

A cute, sweet and humorous story that sweeps you along into the romance along with Cara and Finn. Their stumbling was a bit heartbreaking because I wanted it all to work out!
I loved Julia and her solid friendship as well as Penelope, the aging screen star and landlord. They both added dimension to Cara and her life choices.
Finn and his accent and his clear feelings for Cara were swoon worthy.
The epilogue was funny and from an unexpected POV.

🎧 I listened to the audiobook version of this book. It was narrated by Cady Zuckerman who did a marvelous job with the Irish accent for Finn and the additional cast of Cara, Julia and Penelope and others. The emotions were clear and the full text easy to listen to. I played the audio at 1.25 which is my preferred speed that matches a comfortable casual conversation.
4.5

Whiskey can lead to many things - hangovers are one, husbands are another!

Cara Kennedy, a wannabe screenwriter, is in Ireland, trying to make the best of things, after some mishaps, she is befriended by her Sexy, handsome, (with a toe-curling accent) uber driver and goes on the ride of her life! She decides when in Rome, when in Ireland, she will kick back, let her hair down, go to a pub, dance to some music, drink some whiskey, get caught up in the Irish tradition of women proposing to men and well, wakes up with a husband!

This book is the fun, comical end result of having one too many. But what to do now???? She's married, due to return home and has no idea where to go from here (except home, of course)!

This is a fun light read that had me grinning from ear to ear. Sure, there was one part that had me thinking "Oh, come on...Seriously" but that didn't last. I enjoyed their journey and the book. It's cute, it's light, and entertaining. You may have books (or watched television shows) with accidental marriages, but do they ever get old? Not for me.

A whirlwind trip to Ireland, some mishaps, some whisky, and a marriage.

Charming, cute, and fun!

Thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

The story begins on the morning after Leap Day, as Cara wakes up and realizes she married Finn the night before at a pub. How did Cara manage to marry a stranger during her short three-day visit to Ireland? She has no idea ... blame it on the whiskey!

Since Cara needs to return home to California, she brings Finn (and his dog) with her. Their plan is to proceed with a divorce while in California. I enjoyed their time in Ireland much more than their time in California. In Ireland, they both seemed more authentic and their banter was better. Once Cara was back home, the storyline became distracted with her work situation (boss, promotion, etc.). Unfortunately, most of the story takes place in California.

This is a light and sweet romance story that will likely play in your mind like a movie. If you like dogs, you'll probably like that Finn's dog is a part of the story. The story is even wrapped up with an epilogue told from the dog's POV 🐶.

I do like the writing style. Listening to the audiobook feels like being ttansported to lazy, fun, a very good day while you have that vacation.
Overall, a very good book.

“A do-over?” Cara laughed. “That’s about as ridiculous as dancing in the kitchen on a Tuesday night.”
Now Finn was the one to laugh. “Dancing isn’t specific to a certain night.”
“It feels like a weekend activity.”
“There’s fifty-two weekends in year. Multiply that by how many years we have on this earth, and that’s not nearly enough. If you want to live life to the fullest, you’re gonna have to dance on some Tuesday nights.”

Cara Kennedy was supposed to be in Ireland for a long weekend with her now ex-boyfriend, and decided to go even after they broke up. She keeps running into the charming, handsome Finn Maguire, including on the last night of her trip, in a bar where his band is playing. The next morning, she wakes with him in her bed and a tin foil ring on her finger. She learns that there’s an Irish tradition of women proposing to men on Leap Day, and she apparently took full advantage. It will take a few weeks to get the marriage annulled, so he travels back with her to LA—a move that only makes sense in a rom-com—because how else will they fall in love and live happily ever after?

I never would have read Lucky Leap Day if it weren’t for the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge to read a book with the word “leap” in the title. When I read rom-com/romance novels I prefer the doors open, thank you very much. 😜 But this book was perfectly charming. It hits every beat you’d expect—would you believe by the end she has the man AND the career of her dreams?—yet it still had one twist I can’t believe I didn’t see coming. Reading this story is like reading a Hallmark movie, to the point I’m honesty surprised it hasn’t been made into one. Recommended for rom-com fans. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Lucky Leap Day was a random, spontaneous selection for February (even though this isn't a Leap Year), and it's a fun, light-hearted romance that follows Cara Kennedy to Dublin, Ireland, where she's trying to get over a break up. She returns to California with much more than Finn's cozy sweater and an appreciation for Irish pubs.
Finn's dog is such a fun part of this story!
The ex-boyfriend, Kyle, is written as such a jerk! Wow!

I really love that the story is fast paced, hilarious, and heartwarming. I would recommend this book to those who are looking for something to make them laugh and give them the courage to pursue their dreams because everybody deserves to have their own version of a happy ending.

Lucky Leap Day was a pretty cute romcom set in the one place I'm dying to visit: Dublin. I'm honestly not sure if I ever read a book about Leap Day, but I know I've watched a movie about it before. Leap Year. Yup, that's the movie.

Even though this book reminded me of that movie, it wasn't exactly like that word for word. In it, you will meet Cara and Finn. Just like the movie, Cara knows about the Irish tradition of women proposing on Leap Day. The only thing she didn't expect was to wake up next to a complete stranger. On top of that, she also didn't realize to wake up married to that exact person either.

Yikes. Okay, double yikes.

The only good thing Finn has going for him is his dog. Okay, just kidding here! He has a lot of stuff going for him. Being thrown into this random marriage definitely made things a bit more interesting. Especially since Cara has no idea if it's real or not. Mostly because the guy she used to be in love with broke her heart. Shattered it into teeny tiny pieces like a dickhead.

I honestly really enjoyed their romance. It was cute and made me laugh. Plus, he had a freaking dog that thought Cara was the center of his universe. Which I'm secretly hoping my own two dogs see me that way. If not, I'll cry into some later tonight.

In the end, I really want to travel to Dublin. Or anywhere other than my couch. I also might want to watch the move Leap Year now. Also, can I comment about the dogs POV in the end? It was freaking adorable! Definitely wanted more after that but I'm happy they are all happy.

I picked this up purely for the Dublin setting and Irish love interest, and it certainly delivered on both!

"Yes, talk Irish to me."
Finn raised one brow.
"Is that like dirty talk?"
"It's exactly like dirty talk, but with half the effort and twice the results."

Despite a devastating breakup, Cara decides to continue her trip to Ireland—a place where she can escape the monotonous life as an assistant and display the best version of herself. Waking up next to Finn Maguire with matching wedding bands is not the souvenir she expected to take home, however.

I loved the initial backwards storytelling, revealing the adventure of how Cara and Finn crossed paths. Finn was an absolute charmer with his words (and accent, of course)! It was precious to see him bring out the spontaneous side of Cara.

As they return to LA, the Hollywood storyline was definitely a tad unrealistic, but I was willing to suspend my disbelief for the sweet moments that came with their forced-proximity living arrangements. I had a fun time reading this one!

I am giving this book half a star because it started out so promising! LUCKY LEAP DAY is my first book by Ann Marie Walker, so I went in blind hoping for the best. Our heroine was recently dumped by a cheating boyfriend and decided to take their trip for two to Dublin, Ireland, by herself – a classic setup for a rom-com. Everything is going wrong until she gets in an Uber, and the hero, a sexy Irish rocker, is her driver. By his design, they run into each other again, spend the day together and have a ton of fun.

By this point in the book, I am all in. The heroine is an adorable mess; the hero is cute and sexy (although the narrator’s attempt at a male Irish accent occasionally made me physically cringe). I am ready for the fun, promised-in-the-first-chapter-and-synopsis “oops we’re married” moment so they can spend more fun, cute times in Ireland… when the book suddenly goes off the rails.

It was almost like the second half of the book was written by someone who only skimmed the first part. The hero and heroine inexplicably decide to go back to the heroine’s town, Los Angeles, where this book suddenly becomes about her professional development, her terror of a boss, and her friend group. She doesn’t even see the hero for, like, 48 hours after they land in LA. She just deserts him to stay at her house. Then comes the next 360… the hero is discovered. Not as a musician as one may assume by his character background – what little of it there is – but as an actor in the next big blockbuster. Like… what? There was never any mention that he was an actor or liked acting even, but he’s suddenly swooped up to land the next Marvel-like movie? I can suspend my disbelief for an excellent romance novel, but this was ridiculous.

In addition to the weird plot turns, I disliked a lot about this book. The hero has as much depth as a puddle. He’s perfect the entire time except for his “big secret,” which is also weird, but I will try not to spoil things more than I already have. Like, he’s perfect and patient and kind and apparently has the acting chops of a movie star without trying. And he can sing. Cool. The book is also fade to black with the intimate scenes, which is fine, but the first time the hero and heroine sleep together, the chapter ends, and then they don’t mention it for, like, four chapters! They finally deepen their relationship, and not only do we not get to read about their budding feelings through physical intimacy, but we don’t even get to hear them discuss how it changes things? Not okay.

Oh, and the epilogue is from the dog’s perspective, and, really, that just sent me off. It was weird and not cute as I think it was intended. A real bang of an ending to a book that just didn’t work for me. I would like eight hours of my life back, please.

Really read it because of Ireland

Things I liked:

🧡The setting: Only one-third of the book takes place in Ireland but I still liked the overall feel of it.
🧡Fin, The male lead: He was such a cutie! Sucha sweet character.

🧡The dog: I wish we had more scenes with him but nonetheless, a cute addition to the novel.

Things I wasn't impressed with:

The plotline: It doesn't have those funny moments that I'd like in a cute rom-com novel. The romance is okay but the novel needed more sarcastic moments.

The career move for the Male Lead: Idk but I just wasn't a fan of Fin's career writing; it seemed over the top and fairly easy/cheesy.

There were a lot of wonderful things about this book. The main character was well-rounded. She had firm goals that were outside but parallel to the love story. Her best friend/co-worker was a bit raunchy but not in a bad, overly done way. The banter was cute, clever, and often quite funny. I also thought the use of the historic Irish Love story as a common thread throughout the book was quite clever.

That said, I gave the book three stars for a reason. There were some issues that I had a hard time getting past. One of those issues was the characterization of Cara's love interest, Finn. He was just too perfect. A great guy through and through with no interesting back story or complicated emotions. Handsome, kind, talented, loving. I don't think he could get any more cliche if he was also the guitarist in a band. Oh, wait...he was that, too. He had no real challenges, which made it difficult for me to get close to him a as a character. Nobody is that good. All. The. Time. It doesn't exist, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to hear about it because it would be boring.

I also didn't like the whole "accidentally married" plot line. Part of it is probably the lawyer in me, but it isn't believable that in today's world anyone would truly think they could drunk marry another person. Besides, it's such an overdone concept. Been there, done that - see Friends season 5 finale "The one in Vegas" where Ross and Rachel get drunk and tie the knot; also see the 2008 movie "What Happens in Vegas."

Then there was the decision for Finn to accompany her to America so their divorce would be easier. Divorce does not require the divorcing couple to continue living together until the marriage is dissolved. Usually, it's the opposite. The author explains the decision in the end when it comes to Finn, but I don't know what motivated Cara to agree.

The "problems" in the story weren't very real problems - at least not to me. I never really worried that things wouldn't work out for Cara or Finn. I was invested in their relationship, and I did enjoy seeing how their affections evolved, but I didn't ultimately care whether it worked out or not. I think Finn's flatness as a character was the primary culprit for this reaction, but the lack of true tension was also a heavy contributor.

Lucky Leap Day by Ann Marie Walker is a fast-paced, delightful book set in Dublin and Los Angeles. It’s full of laugh out loud moments and a sweet romance. It has a swoon worthy Irishman, a lovable dog named Oscar and lots of

Aspiring screenwriter Cara Kennedy took a quick long weekend trip to Dublin. She was supposed to go with her boyfriend, however they broke up shortly before the trip. Unable to give up on a trip to Ireland, Cara goes anyway, knowing she might end up seeing her ex who will be there on business.

She immediately meets Finn her Uber driver and he takes her on an insiders tour of Ireland. Later, on the night before she’s supposed to go home, she meets Finn in a local pub and they have a wild night together. The next morning she finds out she is married to Finn, and she’s the one who proposed as it was Leap Day, and it’s a tradition in Ireland for the woman to propose to men on Leap Day.

Some of the situations and decisions made by these characters are a bit far-fetched, but my advice is to just go with it! This isn’t serious literary fiction, but a fun, heartwarming, and charming story of love, and finding out what makes you happy. Also, there are a lot of LOL moments. The author did an excellent job of the dialogue, making Finn’s irish accent evident in the writing.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fun, sweet romantic comedy I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

📚 Hello Book Friends! LUCKY LEAP DAY by Ann Marie Walker has all the feels of P.S. I love you by Cecelia Ahern and the movie Leap Year. Who can you resist an Irish romantic comedy? Surely not me! I love the Irish accent that comes with a sexy Irish man. This accidentally married concept story is cute, light, and heartwarming. The characters are lovable. I was cheering for Cara and Finn all along. I love the feel-good ending. I truly enjoyed this one.

Comical, uplifting, and sweet!

Lucky Leap Day is a heartwarming, amusing tale that takes you into the life of up-and-coming screenwriter Cara Kennedy as she juggles a broken heart, a lacklustre job, a potential career advancement, and a spontaneous marriage to a dishy, Irish cab driver on a special day that comes around only once every four years and after way too many whiskeys.

The writing is light and playful. The characters are kind, easygoing, and clever. And the plot is a fun, flirty, beguiling tale full of tricky situations, tender moments, humorous mishaps, self-discovery, friendship, romance, happiness and quirky traditions.

Overall, Lucky Leap Day is a nostalgic, charming, effortless read by Walker that made me smile, laugh, and dreamily swoon.

What to do when you go on vacation and bring back a husband as a souvenir! This book is the delightful rom com that you are looking for! Be prepared for fits of giggles and swoons of desire as this one will provide you with both! The characters are outstanding from the 80-year-old former "it" girl that is now the most amazing landlord ever to the friends that support you and the bosses that try to demolish you. The author does an outstanding job of creating real characters that are brought to life while you immerse yourself in the story. The narrator did an outstanding job of bringing the story to life and even giving the pups in the story personality! If you are looking for a delightfully entertaining rom com to listen to, then this is the one for you!

Lucky Leap Day is a contemporary romantic comedy. I enjoyed reading this book! It kind of reminds me of Leap Year and PS I Love You. I love that the story is fast paced and hilarious. So funny and so cute lah!

Lucky Leap Day by Ann Marie Walker follows the story of Cara Kennedy, an aspiring screenwriter who was supposedly to go on a trip to Ireland with her boyfriend. Unfortunately, her boyfriend broke up with her two weeks earlier. What? Feeling broken-hearted, she went on the trip alone. Little did she knows that she's going to meet Finn Maguire, who is an Uber driver who is also her tour guide while she's in Ireland. She decided to go to the pub a day before going home. Surprisingly after that evening in the pub, she woke up married to Finn.

I was so excited to know more about Cara and Finn what's probably going to happen to them and are they going to have a real wedding or are they going to path their own life?

This book is hilarious and I enjoyed reading every chapter. Finn's accent is still fresh in my head. I can hear him eventhough by just reading the book.

Overall, this book is worth my time. It's heartwarming light read. Highly recommend it!

I was hooked from the beginning. I love Irish accents and every word Finn said in the book I could hear it spoken like that since the author told us how it sounded in the accent. FINN = SWOON. Excuse me while I book a flight to Ireland. Absolutely obsessed with this book.

Cutesy - modern day romance that you sort of have to suspend belief a bit to enjoy.

Cara goes to Dublin and falls in love with her hot uber driver (who also happens to work at a famous prison with a dark part AND play guitar in a band) - a little too convenient for me. They end up getting married on leap day (which is a thing in Ireland where the lady proposes to the man) after too many whiskeys and then chaos ensues.

Cara & Finn (love the name 😉) head back to LA, where he pursues a career as an actor as they try to untangle the legal mess of an annulment. I have to say I loved the sidekick dog character, Oscar.

This was cute and cringey all at the same time.

Lucky Leap Day is a lighthearted, enchanting romantic comedy unlike anything I've read before. It begins in Dublin, but the rest of the story takes place in Malibu after the first few chapters. This book will have you captivated from beginning to end. I haven't read anything by this author before, but this was phenomenal.

Cara Kennedy takes a solo trip to Dublin for a long weekend. Despite the fact that she planned to travel to Dublin with Kyle, her boyfriend at the time, the two split up before the trip. Why would you waste a perfect opportunity to visit Dublin just because you broke up? So she went out and discovered a rather unique Irishman, Oscar, and his dog.

After she books another Uber after her previous one was cancelled, she meets this wonderful Irishman known as Finn. Finn gives her his sweater and gives her a tour of Ireland till her hotel room is ready because she is soaking wet. She tells him about her lists of things to do in Dublin, and he informs her whether or not she should go.

On her last day before going back home, she goes to tour Kilmainham Gaol, and Finn happens to be her tour guide. He invites her out to the bar after the tour, and she accepts. Simple farewell drinks shouldn't be that bad, right? She does, however, have such a wild night. That night, she discovers everything there is to know about Leap Day. She proposes to Finn while intoxicated and on the spur of the moment. She doesn't recall what happened until the next morning, when she wakes up in Finn's bed and discovers they're married.

Finn returns to Malibu with Cara to seek out how to solve things. However, now that they're back in Malibu, they continue putting it off as they get to know each other better. Everything is all fun and games until the truth is revealed.

A cute "woke up married" romance, Ann Marie Walker playfully slips many of our favorite tropes into Lucky Leap Day.

Cara and Finn make a cute couple from their very first meeting, and the early scenes of the two in Dublin are wonderful! Once they make their way to Los Angeles I felt like they lost some of their connection, but it's still nice to see how they find their way to happily ever after.

Audio nicely performed by Cady Zuckerman. Ms. Zuckerman's joyful narration adds so much to Cara's character, and her lilting Irish brogue is just the thing for Finn.

I want to start by saying, I really enjoyed this book, more than I was anticipating and I think it was because of the narration, it was wonderful. I had heard of the tradition of women asking men to marry them on Leap Day in Ireland, but this is the first book I read with that tradition spotlighted. Cara Kennedy was supposed to be heading to Ireland with her boyfriend for a long weekend while he attended a conference for work. Everything was in place, tickets bought, reservations made and vacation time booked, when he broke up with her two weeks before the conference. Rather than waste the ticket and time off, she booked her own room and headed off. After landing and an accident with a splashing Uber car, her Uber driver is a sexy, brogue speaking, jaw dropping, Finn Maguire. He becomes her "tour guide" for a couple of days and ends the weekend as the guitar player at a local pub on Leap Day. With fortification from some pretty strong punch, Cara pops the question and ends up bringing home the hunky Finn, as her husband.

This is a cute, light, and heartwarming romance. The characters are lovable, and who can resist a lovely Irish Accent. The scene where Cara has Finn "speak Irish" to her was hilarious. I was cheering for Cara and Finn right from the start. Cara puts up with a lot in her life, specifically at work, so I was happy she found something to make her happy, very happy. Finn seems like such a good guy, at times too good to be true, but he truly falls in love with Cara and wants to make her happy. The secondary characters were well developed for their role and added so much to the story. I loved the dogs and their roles in the story as well, especially their own love story. Of course there is some angst caused by secret keeping, but it is a romance, so you know they will get together, but the journey was entertaining. I love the feel-good ending and I truly enjoyed this one. As I stated earlier, the narration was excellent. It is hard to believe that there is only one narrator. Cady Zuckerman nailed the voices of the characters and did an amazing job with Finn. I definitely recommend you listen to this one if you can get your hands on it. It is pure entertainment and had me smiling all the way to my destination.

DNF @ 14%. Maybe if I was in a different mood I would give this one more of a try, but I can't get into it and I'm not a fan at all of the main character.
