Assassin of Onisea #1

Assassin's Refusal

Rate this book
What happens when duty and love clash? When what you know versus what you feel are at odds? You refuse it, of course.

Trained by the best since birth, I've been molded in my father's image - strong, fearless, and deadly. Then he died unexpectedly, and my world shattered.

But all was not lost. He left me a note. Gave me a purpose. He wanted me to take up his mantle and become the king's next assassin.

This was my shot, my time to shine, to honor my father's memory and prove that all of his lessons weren't a waste. The only problem? The king demanded the heads of Rykon, Ajax and Zayden, the three heirs of the city's major guilds. Those are the three heads of the men I gave my heart to six years ago. The three men I left behind without a word. The only three heads I can't kill.

With no choice but to run, I hide in the one place I know they wouldn't dare look. The one place no one chooses to go - the slums. It's there that I start to build a life.

That all changes when I get news from an old friend. News that turns everything upside down.

Now, I have a new purpose - I want revenge. But I need help in order to pull it off. Help from those same men I left all those years ago. I need to make them an offer they can't refuse.

Trigger Warning: This book contains graphic scenes, harsh language, killing, torture and child slavery. Rape is mentioned. Graphic sex that involves blood play. This is a Reverse Harem. The Heroine does not choose one love interest but is involved with all.

Dnf 2%. It's already obvious this book needs too much editing for me to be able to enjoy it. The map at the beginning misspelled the kingdom's name, the prologue was called a preface even though those are very different things, and I've seen several grammar issues and phrases that just didn't quite sound right.

A reverse harem set in a fantasy world where our main female character is an assassin?! Sign me up! Sadly, this book has a great synopsis but that's about it. I couldn't take the stereotypical male love interests with their attitudes and how they all read so intense in how they acted, I was also not a fan of the constant inner monologue they were all prone to having. Aside from that, all the characters had a childish way of thinking that put me off the story. I just couldn't handle more of this.

I want to start this review off by saying that Kira is a new author to me. I went in to this book blind to her writing style but I’m happy to say I really enjoyed it.

I like the premise of this book and the overall plot. It was an interesting take on assassins, guilds and a corrupt government. The world and character building was done beautifully. Kira gave each character an equal amount of time in the spotlight and it made it easier to get to know them, which I appreciated. My one complaint about this book is that the action was a little slower than I usually read but it didn’t detract from the book.

Mika, also know as Emerald and The Hood, is an absolutely amazing FMC. She is badass, cold and calculating but shows that deep down she does have emotions that she likes to keep hidden. I enjoyed her backstory and at times felt bad for the lack of love and joy she has had in her life. I’m hoping that Kira makes things better for her in future books.

Ajax, the heir to the assassin guild, is like Mika in a lot of ways. He’s been hurt and hides behind a cool mask of indifference. I just want to hug him and tell him it will all be okay. Zayden, the heir to the please guild, is hilarious but it’s obvious that he hides behind his sarcasm and jokes. I can’t wait to get to the more emotional heart of him. Rykon, the heir to the thieves guild, seems much more willing to deal with his emotions even if he doesn’t always like it. He seems the most level headed and admire him for that.

These characters together are explosive in more than one way and I can’t wait until all of the secrets that are being kept come to light. I like the angst and the emotions that are brought out with lies and manipulation. I also enjoy the groveling and making up that comes after. I have no idea how I’m going to wait until fall for book 2.

Wow this story is SOOO good. I'm glad I read it! It's a second chance, lovers-enemies-lovers, hidden identity story, with a truly badass FMC that I absolutely LOVED! Mika/Emerald takes zero shits and she beats everyone up! Also, I loved how much she worked lol. She is an assassin, and she has a huge plan to take over the crown. But she needs some help to accomplish it..

Enter the heroes: Ajax, Zayden and Rykon. They used to be friends, but something happened and they are enemies. They are attracted to Emerald and obsessed with her assassin persona, the Hood.

The plot is really good and it flows easily. It's obvious there are a lot of things happening that not even Mika knows about, but she's willing to figure it all out.

I'm moving on to the next book ASAP.

Assassin’s Refusal is the first book in a series and I thought it was a great introduction book!

When Mika is summoned by King Valkon and assigned the mission of killing the heirs of three major guildmasters, she flat out refuses. She has a history with those heirs and can’t bring herself to kill them, even if it has been several years since she’s last seen them.

Because of this refusal, Mika is now on the run, hiding in plain sight. No one knows she’s the assassin, so as long as she lays low she’s confident she can stay in the slums of the city, while keeping an eye on things and ensuring the king doesn’t send anyone else to kill the heirs.

Mika tries to keep a low profile, however her actions as “the Hood” unintentionally garner the attention of the guildmasters, who each try to persuade her to join their guild and work for them. It’s during one of the meetings with the guildmaster of the pleasure guild that Mika learns that there’s something very disturbing going on. She vows to stop this event from happening, and plans to take down everyone involved. But in order for her plan to be successful, she needs to bring all three of the heirs together, while trying to keep her identity from them a secret.

This book is told in multiple POVs, which I absolutely loved! I thought the story was a bit slower than I usually like, but the world building was great and the way it ended has me very excited for what’s to come! I’m really looking forward to book 2, Assassin’s Quest, when it’s released later this year!

Full discloser I have never read any of Kira Stanley’s work and I had no idea what the book was going to be about before I started reading it there for, I was unsure about this book when I first started to read it. Assassin’s Refusal is one of those books where the first chapter is completely necessary for the story line but for me it took getting past it to fully get into the story. That being said once I got to that part, the book completely captivated me and I didn’t want to put it down until I finished it. The author gave Mika an assassin and the female main character, the depth that she needed to be that badass female character that will have anyone rooting for her to win out above all odds especially with all she has endured to get to where she is now. The boys oh the boys, Ajax the heir to the assassin guild, Zayden the heir to the pleasure guild, and Rykon the heir to the thieves guild are your hot sexy alpha types but like Mika they have that deep character development that gives the insight to each of their personalities. Each of the males have qualities that suit Mika’s character perfectly and with it comes the intense attraction between Mika and each of the guys. All four have history together and despite the guys having issues with one another, which I hope they will work through in the books to come, the four work well together. Overall definitely a five out of five and one I would recommend to read and I’m eagerly waiting for the next book to see what happens next.

Mika is a crazy awesome chick who just happens to be an assassin, trained by her father—though no one knows it. Her father told her that she wouldn’t be taken seriously as a woman, so he took her on as his apprentice, but made sure that she always wore a hood and clothes that would hide her gender. After his passing she makes her way to the King to take her father’s place as the King’s assassin, but what he asks her to do to prove her loyalty, she just can’t do. He asks her to kill Rykon, Ajax, and Zayden—the heirs to the city’s three major guilds. But these are the boys that she fell in love with six years ago, before she broke all four of their hearts when she left. So she flees to the slums and begins to build a new life, using her skills to help those that can’t quite refuse it. But when those same three boys, now men, seek her out in her assassin persona, she knows that she needs them to take the revenge she now seeks. But can she keep herself from falling harder for them?

Whoa. This book is freaking amazing. An amazing fantasy story with great world building and characters that you can’t help but love and root for. Mika is awesome and I wish I could be more like her. The three men she loves are broken, not quite the boys she remembers, but she still finds herself drawn to them over and over. The four of them become intertwined in a larger story that has to do with the king and their home. It turns out that nothing is what it seems and Mika is not above using these three to get her revenge. It’s hot and so well written. And I cannot wait to see what happens next.

I love a strong, bad**s female main character and Mika is that and so much more. I love a great assassin who can take on any opponent. She’s been training since she was little – it’s all she’s known. Once upon a time she knew and fell for three men; Ajax, Rykon, and Zayden, but she had to leave them behind. Now she’s on the run, ends up back where she grew up, and runs into them again. Ultimately, she needs their help. They don’t recognize her from the girl she used to be, they know her as Emerald, and Mika is happy to let them continue believing that. She knows they’d be angry if they knew she was the one who left them all those years ago. They all end up needing each other for different reasons and are forced to work together. The relationships between them are fantastic, there’s not a ton of spice, but there’s some, and some real sexual tension between them that is delicious. There’s a ton of secrets and mystery. The worldbuilding is well done. They are all walking that fine line of good vs. bad but straddle it well so far. Mika isn’t as heartless as she appears although she tries to keep that part of herself hidden. I really liked this book, it’s a dark, RH, second chance novel that’s really well done! This is just the beginning – you can feel it. I can’t wait to see where their journey takes them, I’m invested, and I love these guys already. 🖤

This book had a lot of great elements to it. There were a few parts that were a bit slow for me, and it took me a little longer to get through some of the scenes thatI read. However, I really enjoyed reading Assassin’s Refusal. The storyline and plot were really well built. The chapters flowed well, and I was able to see things clearly in my mind as I was reading. I thought the characters were well developed and I really like Zayden’s personality! I know they say not to pick a favorite, but sometimes it is hard not to. Overall, great book and worldbuilding, and the characters were a delight!

This story has secrets and mystery which I really enjoyed. I really like the strong female character Mika was. She has been training since she was little and when she met Zayden, Ajax, and Rykon she fell head over heels for them. She gets separated but finds them again. It was sure interesting to see each heir of the guild, and how they interacted with the guild. It is a good romance, with second chance love that fits well together. This book has some good humor as well, which I loved. I can't wait to see where Kira Stanley takes her next book with this series cause it sure left me wanting more.

While the blurb and premise of this story was very intriguing, the writing seemed to lack throughout the majority of the story. The dialogue seemed very juvenile and the writing style itself seemed almost like fanfic. I finished the story because I was genuinely interested in how everything was going to play out. That says a lot because normally, I would've DNF'd because the writing was so juvenile. But I was so interested in the plot that I couldn't stop. There were certain scenes that I could practically pinpoint the inspiration (ex "stop being so mean to me or I'm going to fall in love with you - Nick from New Girl anyone??). Now whether or not this is being used as a nod to the author's appreciation of these moments or genuine ignorance, I don't know. But overall, this story just seemed very fanfic-y.

I will likely read the next book whenever it comes out but I seriously hope the writing improves. There were a lot of runaround sentences, lot's of "ok" instead of "okay," and at one point the wrong to was used (too instead of to). Things like this just pull me out of the story and makes it hard to be immersed. Make sure to check your TW - child slavery is a heavy plot point. Looking forward to book 2 and I'll decide from there if I'll continue the series.

This is the first book by Kira Stanley I’ve read and I absolutely loved it! Mika is such a strong determined character that wants to do right despite being an assassin. The guys each an heir to a guild, pleasure, thieves and assassins once friends but separated by the loss of a combined love each blaming the others. I love the fact that this is both a second chance and a RH which makes this an unusual combination that along with the fact the characters grow throughout the book and the side characters are equally as intriguing just keeps you flipping those pages. The world building is absolutely incredible with a real feel for the slums as well as how Mika grew up. One little thing, it does have a little bit of this superman vibe of take the glasses off she’s unrecognised (except she changed her hair colour.) I get it’s six years on but I’m pretty sure that the love of these guys lives would recognise her… then again Louis Lane never did so I went with it and just enjoyed rather than nitpicking and getting annoyed! 😂 The book is heaped with mystery, murder, chemistry, secrets and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what book two brings!

This book was absolutely phenomenal! This book packed an epic punch in the form of Mika, a kick butt female assassin! Mika is a true warrior and despite her profession, she truly cares for the well-being of others and knows the difference between truly right and wrong. It was fascinating seeing so many sides and facets of her character.

Then add in Rykon, Zayden, Ajax and man oh man do things get even more interesting. Each of these men are so different in their own right, but also together just make so much sense especially with Mika in the mix. Seeing them each in their elements inside their guild and their compassion under the surface despite circumstances is fascinating.

This story was packed full of action, mystery, and so so much more! I was totally consumed from beginning to end and am so excited for what’s right come. I am loving these characters so much and this story line has me waiting with bated breath to see what’s to come.

I feel like I can’t convey fully how much I loved this story, but trust me when I say it’s one you’ll want to pick up and devour!

It took a few chapters for me to get hooked on this story. There is a lot of back story for the FMC, Mika. Mika’s story begins with a refusal of a job from the King. As an assassin for the King, any refusal forfeits her life. Luckily, no one knows who she is under her disguise. The world building really immerses you in Mika’s story.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The world building is in-depth and riveting. The FMC is strong, fierce and although she is an assassin, she does small moral code.

Now Mika’s men are something else… Rykon belongs to the thieves guild. He’s probably the most “normal” of the three. Zayden is from the pleasure guild and he is definitely confident and full of himself. Honestly, he is the best. Ajax is in the assassin’s guild and he’s rough around the edges, but he is definitely the most similar to Mika.

I’m really looking forward to how Mika and her three musketeers fare in the next book!

Mika is the perfect assassin, proficient in killing, fighting, disposing of bodies and keeping secrets. She is a character who is worth caring about because she has a moral compass and her current circumstances mean she can literally pick and choose her targets. Mika is a FMC of to become obsessed with because she is so much more than that though, she is conflicted, she let's her rage build up and she needs an outlet. If you enjoy books about assassins then I think you will like this fantasy about humans and fae who are currently at war. The men in this story are soooo good to read about, the crazy whore, the psychotic assassin, the thief that seems the most normal out of all of them and (I really hope he is one of her men!) the crown prince. With a city that is a character in itself, heists, plots and secrets a plenty, this book is a winner. You should definitely read if you are a fan of fantasy!

I love the character development this author is weaving. Having a strong female lead without male bashing is refreshing!
The story line grabbed me from the first chapter and held me straight to the end. I'm fully invested in these characters and can't wait to find out how they will grow and meld into their full potential in the continuing story.
I read this in one sitting and found it to be entertaining and satisfying.
I also love that, while there is obvious sexual tension, this book wasn't full of mindless sex scenes that seem to take over. This allowed for a deeper connection with the characters as individuals instead of as lovers. It allowed the story to develop into something worth reading.
I'm highly looking forward to the next book in the series.
Great job Kira!

This book wasn’t what I expected it to be. This story is about 5 people. I thought the POV of the 4 MC was going to be to much but it wasn’t. This did have some spicy in it but not as much as I am use too. I’m very happy it didn’t fade to black. When I learned it was a reverse harem I was more intrigued. The main female lead is Strong and intelligent but also soft and warm. The main male leads all have a soft side but don’t let that fool you for their dark side. This was also a fantasy RH in a different realm. I wanna learn more about the Fae and the other realm.

Characters: 100000/10
Spicy: 6/10
Plot:10/10
Triggers: Listed in the beginning.* Cliffhanger *
Trope: reverse harem

I really enjoyed this book. I love a good Assassin book. Kira Stanley didn’t disappoint. The Assassin was giving a job by the King. The job was refused by the Assassin. The King wanted the Assassin caught. So the Assassin had to go into hiding. The Assassin became the Hood. The Hood helped out the citizens of the Slums. The Hood didn’t help people for money. The Hood had a job that would require help. So the Hood recruited help from the men the King wanted taken out. Will they help the Hood? Will the Hoods job go off without a hitch? Will the guys still work with the Hood when they find out who the Hood really is? Read the book to find out.

If you are looking for a book with a strong, independent, can take care of herself main character, Assassin's Refusal definitely has it in the form of Mika. Add in a few secrets, hidden identities, and three guild heirs pining after her and it is such a strong first installment of a series that will be on my buy on release day list.

Kira Stanley's writing is smooth and makes the story flow so well. The characters are fun to learn more about and trying to figure out what the end game may be.

Overall I loved it. 4.75 stars

This was a lot of fun to read. There is obviously a lot of thought and work that went into the world-building. I am a big fan of having a female lead who knows what she is and what she wants and is not afraid to pursue her own goals. The story starts with the action and flows well into the main conflict. It’s a great start to the series and I’m really excited to see where the characters go!
As with any story, it is prudent to mind the trigger warnings! Overall, it was well planned and fun to read! I look forward to the next installment!

Oh how I loved this book! Let me count the ways.

One strong BAB, who hides her compassion.
Three sexy strong kicka$$ men, who are the “bad guys” but there so good.
Mystery, secrets, and intrigue
Lots of sexual tension and slow burn
All of that while being written by one of my favorite authors.

I have been waiting for this book, and it was everything I didn’t know I needed. I can’t wait to read more of Mika’s story! 10/10

Absolutely loved this! I have read a lot of assassin books lately and this one took a different twist!! It was fun and intriguing. The FMC Mika is just amazing. I love how badass she is and how she lives in the shadows. I love the fact that she is the true assassin in the bunch and the assassin's guild is really the poser's trying to be exactly like her. I love Kira Stanley's writing and the way she takes you on this journey with Mika and the men is just amazing!! Definitely Recommend!!!

This book was absolutely amazing. I am usually not a fan of slow burn but this one had me hooked. The way she wrote her main character amazed me as both a reader and a writer. I cannot wait to see where this series takes Mika and her little group of men. I definitely would read this book if you are interested in RH and a badass female mc. Thank you Kira Stanley for letting me be a beta reader! It was an honor!

Mika is a force to be reckoned with. She is cold and calculating with a side of blood thirsty psychopath with the hope of love some day. Watching her interact with the guys and them thinking she Emerald not suspecting her as the Hood or Mika was amazing. Now they know "Emerald" is the hood, I can't wait to see what happens when her plan against the king comes to fruition.
