I confess to being a person who has undervalued Disney's Princesses: so often they have needed a man to "save" them, it seems. I've not always appreciated them, and have discounted their power in the overall story. This book opened my eyes to the power of their characters, their individual voices, the cultures they represented and the times in which they were written. Whereas in other forms of art men were the leads without fail, Disney celebrated the voices of female characters.

This book is separated into 8 chapters, discussing origins and inspirations, reimaginings, toys/collectibles/games, fashion, music, parks/resorts/cruises, fandom/cosplay/art, and then "girl power". I especially enjoyed learning of the real-life inspirations for each character, and how she was developed. There is nothing negative in this book, just a celebration of these Disney heroines and an appreciation for the far-reaching impact they've had in the world. The timeline and sources at the end are extremely helpful, as well. A delightful coffee table book for Disney fans, absolutely full of wonderful images.

At the beginning, I was excited to read more about the Disney characters I love so much. The first chapter did a nice job summing that up, and discussing how the creative process has changed over time, and how the princesses have changed to reflect their times.

However, when I realized what a massively materialistic empire these princesses rule, I started to feel a little sick. Of course there's films, but there's also sequels, and TV series, and live action versions. There's beautiful, iconic costumes, but there's also dress up clothes, Halloween costumes, wedding dresses, Disney Bounding, and imaginative time-warped, gender bent cosplay. Every type of media: soundtracks, sheet music, video games, mobile games. And the mountains of Disney Princess blessed merchandise. Toys, obviously. But ANY commodity at all can be princessed. (I once bought a fresh pineapple and noticed it was branded for Frozen 2. I figured there must be a reference to pineapples in the new movie, or they have a tropical summer adventure. Nope. Just another commodity to princessify.) And last but not least, there's princess vacation spots, cruises, resorts, etc.

Bazillions of dollars constantly being shelled out of our pockets, and for what? Characters that teach us not to give up? The encouragement to pursue our dreams? The concept of happy ever after? How did this symbol grow so all encompassing?

What a beautiful book! If you love the Disney Princesses, you will love this book that is all about them and their influence.

There can be so much negative talk out there about the Princesses. Sometimes, I start to think that I'm the only one that loves them and thinks they are a force for good. If you have ever felt that way, rest assured, that is not the case! :)

Each chapter of this book deals with a different area of their influence: Toys, Collectibles & Games; Fashion; Music; Parks & Resorts; Fandom, Cosplay, & Art.

I was most surprised by the Fandom/Cosplay portion of the book. Evidently, the D23 Expo actually welcomes Disney Cosplay. I guess I thought it was a more formal event for the Disney company. But no, it seems to be an all out convention for Disney fans.

I actually learned a lot of things that I didn't know. For example, I thought Disney merchandising, especially their way of having the merch out BEFORE the movie is released, was a fairly new thing. Like, a modern way of doing things. People are always talking about Disney in terms of a "money-grab" like they don't care about anything but making a buck.

However, this idea was actually in place way back when the very first Princess came on the scene. There was actually merch for Snow White out in stores before the movie came out! This is quite amazing when you think about how, back then, no one knew if Snow White was going to be a hit. People were even saying Walt was crazy to attempt a full-length animated movie.

But Walt partnered with a well-know marketing man of the time and that was their plan. Having the merch in stores created interest in the film, and allowed people to take home a little piece of the magic. So, whether or not you like that strategy, it is a long standing tradition for the company that goes all they way back to Walt and Snow White.

There are lots of beautiful photos and illustrations to enjoy throughout the book.

Two of my favorite little extras were:

A page that includes all the Princesses autographs. This is what you would see if you got their autographs in the parks. I have always loved that each character has an official way of signing "their" name. I have gotten some of the Princesses autographs, but not all. It's beautiful how each signature reflects that Princess. It's their own personal calligraphy - if you will - and a little detail that I love about meeting the characters in the parks. :)

The Forward by none other that Jodi Benson - voice of Ariel - herself! BTW, if you have not read Jodi's book, you definitely should. My review of it is here: Part of My World

Princess: Beyond the Tiara is a must-read for all Disney Princess fans.

DNF @ 37%

This DNF has almost nothing to do with the content, but rather the way the eARC itself is formatted. I understand ARCs are still likely undergoing changes, but if they’re being released to the public in any manner, I expect to be able to consume the content with little to no problem.

I’m fine with a majority of the pictures being unavailable since this is an advance copy, what I’m not okay with is full sentences being interrupted only to continue several pages later; images breaking up words; two separate sections being so mangled together I have no idea where my original thread was left let alone where it went.

I will say, from the content I was able to decipher, this seems like more of a Disney Adult publication, than for someone casually interested. There’s lots and lots of praise but absolutely no discussion on how problematic Disney has a tendency to be. For example, there’s no acknowledgment that Disney’s first Black princess spent 3/4 of her movie as a frog, or that there was such backlash to the live-action Mulan for multiple reasons.

I was also looking for more historical context, maybe some deep delving into how Disney found these characters, how they chose to adapt them, and the history behind the story (or, in some cases, the person herself). It’s all very surface and prideful, like “Look at all these neat things Disney has done since the ‘30s!”

I think I’ll return to this once it’s properly published, because I really do love the princesses, and I’ve always been thoroughly obsessed with fairytales. Hopefully since I have more than half of the book left, there will be some saving grace in the future.

I received an eARC from Edelweiss & Epic Ink in exchange for an honest review.

An adult non - fiction book for adults about Disney Princesses.

The first half is very interesting. Or documents the creation of the character, the voice actresses, and very interesting early concept art.

The second half devolved into filler about merchandise, ect that I mostly skimmed.

In the early 2000s, I purchased a thin hardcover book entitled Disney Princess: The Essential Guide because I felt it was important to have the reference materials to back it up my princess fan status. At that time, there were only six official Disney Princesses, and the brand was still fairly new. Since then, the Disney Princess brand has exploded into a corporate empire that has kept my blog alive and thriving for over five years. So it seemed like a good time for an upgrade. Beyond the Tiara by Emily Zemler is a nearly 200-page long coffee table textbook that puts The Essential Guide to shame. It contains quotes, concept art, memorabilia, and other Disney Princess facts that make it the most comprehensive guide on the market for the Disney Princess brand today. Plus, it has a sparkly holographic cover.

This book contained everything I was hoping for and more. It covers each and every aspect of the Disney Princess brand from conception to reception. Just about everything that I've ever posted about in my blog that relates to Disney was mentioned at some point. I kept thinking "I could have written this!" Emily Zemler sounds like a genuine fan of all things princess who understands the positive impact that princess culture has on society and celebrates the old and the new with photos, quotes, and obscure historical facts. The first chapter of the book was my favorite. It was the longest by far and gave a brief summary of how each princess movie was developed alongside quotes and stories from the production teams. Each princess got a full-page spread that depicted the women who inspired their character designs from popular celebrities to the original voice artists and live-action models.

The rest of the book covers everything in the Disney Princess fandom that has ever paid tribute to the characters from Kingdom Hearts to Sofia the First to popular cosplayers. It referenced other things I've posted about in my blog that I thought were long forgotten as well such as the #DreamBigPrincess campaign and the discontinued Disney Princess Majestic Quest app. It also paid homage to the women who worked behind the scenes such as Mary Blair. Nearly every page has lush full-color artwork and photos of various merchandise and conceptual designs that had rarely been seen before these films were released on DVD in the mid-2000s. I learned something new about Belle from a Paige O'Hara quote in which she expressed how she thought the original design for the character was too refined and perfect for audiences to relate to, so the animators reworked the character to give her more of a "girl next door" look so that fans would be able to see themselves in her. That stray wisp of hair on her forehead that the animators like to talk about in interviews was likely related to this.

In addition to being a reference guide for the Disney Princess movies, Beyond the Tiara also serves as a history book. Snow White, the first Disney Princess, came out in 1937, which was over 80 years ago, making it a historical brand. The look and personality of each princess is a reflection of what the ideal woman is like during that time period. The book references famous women throughout history who provided inspiration for the Disney Princesses such as Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana. The merchandise section shows the evolution of the dolls over time and reveals all kinds of experimental themed products such as Snow White-themed house cleaning fluids! The music section serves as a reminder that recorded soundtracks predate home video, so in the era of Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty, the only way that fans were able to re-experience their favorite moments in the films was by listening to the soundtracks. It shows us how far we've come and not to take modern streaming services where we can watch out favorite princess movie at the press of a button for granted.

Beyond the Tiara is the ultimate guidebook for every Disney Princess fan to keep on hand and learn about how the brand has evolved over the years. Though the book attempted to reference future properties like the upcoming Tiana series, it failed to reference Raya as an official Disney Princess even though the movie was mentioned in a blurb about Disney films exploring other cultures. Another minor error I found was Aurora's page listing her film as 1955 instead of 1959, but this could have been an editing mistake rather than part of the manuscript since the author seemed to know her stuff pretty well. If you're on the fence about buying this book, I say go for it! Not only is it a nice display piece, it's also just as much fun to flip through the pictures as it is to read the actual text. Plus, it's a great way for millennial parents who grew up with the Disney Princesses to bond with their daughters and stealthily teach them about women's history.

Book provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review

Starting with Snow White, the book breaks down the inspiration behind the character by mixing facts with vintage photos and sketches. Each section is chockfull of fun blurbs like for instance Disney writers based Princess Tiana on famed restauranteur Leah Chase. Each section has a separate colored box that gives details on what went into the voice and character clothing for each Princess.

Disney Princess: Beyond the Tiara: The Stories. The Influence. The Legacy. is an exciting release that presents multiple chapters on Disney Princess history. Chapters that do a deep dive on each princess are included showcasing the books, live-action films, toys, Disneyana, fashion, and books. It’s a massive amount of information compressed down to the most important aspects of Disney Princess marketing.

One of the most compelling parts of the book is the discussion of music and the theme parks associated with Disney Princesses. Utilizing interviews with Disney historians, author Emily Zemler gives readers some background information but also shares the magic of Disney songs from the movies and theater that capture viewer's attention.

Beyond the Tiaramakes an excellent coffee table book or a gift for a Disney lover. It's a balanced mixture of facts, archival photographs, and some modern inclusions like Princess memes and products making this an exhaustive collection of everything to know about Disney Princesses!

Bursting at the seams with more than 200 illustrations in 192 pages of concept art, posters and relics from Disney history, "Beyond the Tiara" delves into the cash cow that is the Disney Princess phenomenon.

Delving into the DNA of what brought each animated character into existence, the work of author Emily Zemler pulls back the curtain on the insight, character development, voice performances and historical influence that went into each character.

Included on the roster are Moana, Merida, Rapunzel, Tiana, Mulan, Pocahontas, Jasmine, Belle, Ariel, Aurora, Cinderella and Snow White.

The foreword is by Jodi Benson, the voice actor behind Ariel. There are also interviews with composer Alan Menken and Lea Salonga, who voiced princess songs in "Mulan" and "Aladdin."

The book seems geared to younger fans, with nods to historians who can take the rose-colored view with a grain of salt. It would have been interesting to have included some feminist voices on the evolution of the Disney Princess concept throughout the eras, as well as some comparisons with non-Disney female animated figures throughout correlating times.

Still, the book stands as a gorgeous and informative coffee table tome that pays heartfelt tribute to the aspirational figures in the Disney realm.

I have wanted to read this book ever since I saw it first advertised months ago. It has a good assortment of background information on each Disney Princess movie, along with some concept art. My favorite section in the book was Chapter 1: Once Upon a Dream, which focused on the origins of each of the movies. That was a lot of fun to read. The other sections were also good reads too. I love how the book focused on each of the princesses' impacts on the world. Also, the forward from Jodi Benson was great. Ariel will always be a favorite princess of mine. This book taught me something that I did not know about her. I did not know she was named after Ariel from Footloose.

*Thank you to Edelweiss for my ARC of the book. All opinions are my own.*
