A beautiful, helpful, instructive artist's guide with step-by-step instructions on how to use a grid method to make your own masterpiece with little scraps of magazine paper. To sum up: * Choose a photograph. * Use an app to put gridlines on the photo and print it out. * Use a sharpie to draw gridlines on your canvas (which should be thick: watercolor paper, wood or a stretched canvas). * Find high-quality magazines you can cut into little bits. * Don latex or nitrile gloves. * Put liquid glue (the author recommends Litquitex or Golden, no Elmer's or Modgepodge) in a little tray. * Dip your tiny scraps, one at a time, in the glue then place them on the canvas on the corresponding grid points. * Start with the eyes and work out from there.
This generous artist also has a helpful website, artistsamuelprice.com, in which he offers free video lessons and pdfs you can download of all the materials you'll need to try to do the brilliant work he does. I am excited to give this method a try!
I'm grateful to Netgalley and Walter Foster Publishing for providing me with a free ebook for me to review, but this is a book I will buy to have in my art how-to collection.
I have done a little collage, but it was always a hit and miss exercise, and then a read this book which answered a lot of questions for me. Starting from chapters on tools and material, color wheel and circles. To projects such as flowers, color landscape, black and white self portrait and ending with collage portrait of a cat and a dog. The workshop is joy to follow. Working on a grid pattern, the collage material is applied to bring out the shape, shadows, features and perspective of the final collage. A fabulous workshop that I found very informative, easy to follow and gave a great image in the end. Thanks you NetGalley and the publishers for the DRC

From fruit still life to abstract stripes, geometric boxes and sunflowers, Samuel's style is very unique and he has clear step-by-step instructions on how to create the finished product. This tutorial takes collage to an entirely different level by creating one artistic image out of paper scraps of varying shades and colors. Samuel Price covers every detail: supplies, techniques, types of papers the work better than others down to the fact that thick high quality glossy magazines the best for this medium. I haven’t attempted any pieces yet, but plan to start with the Sunflower. The dog is amazing and I’m looking forward to trying that but think. I’d better get some practice first. The instructions are short and sweet. Colorful, clear, photographs illustrate all of the steps. Photographs also illustrate the supplies needed or supplies to choose from, so in one photograph you can see 5 or 6 sealants that the author recommends. I find this easier that looking for supply lists or text. This is a nice book for ,anyone who, wants to explore a new medium or technique. Thank you #netgalley for this ARC of #PaperCollageWorkshop
Paper Collage Workshop is a well written and illustrated practical guide to collage as a fine art medium. Released 8th Nov 2022 by Quarto on their Walter Foster imprint, it's 128 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats.
Author Samuel Price has an engaging and accessible teaching style and the whole manual has the feel of a well organized and effective workshop. The introduction covers tools, supplies, methodology, and some color theory. The introduction also shows readers how to produce reference photos (VERY useful info here), what supplies to use, and step-by-step instruction for producing finished learning projects. Project tutorials include a bullet list of tools and supplies and instructions numbered in sequential steps.
All of the tutorials are well photographed with clear, color photos which are easy to understand and happily without hands or tools obscuring the action. Although the finished projects are clearly highly professional and artistic/painterly, a keen beginner could use the instruction contained in the book to produce works in collage from start to finish. There is an abbreviated gallery with thumbnails for inspiration included at the back of the book. There is no bibliography or index in the review copy provided for review.
Five stars. This would be a superlative choice for public or school library acquisition, home artist's studio, activity/makers' groups, classroom/workshop use, and similar needs.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Couple months ago I saw an inspiration video about how a young artist turn her old magazine collection become art paper collage. Although I am totally mesmerized by the whole process but I found it is complicate and to accomplish such beauty need alot skill and effort.
We aren't stranger to this sticking pieces of coloured paper and cloth onto paper and create a picture. But to take this basic skill to the new level we will need this book. Paper Collage Workshop is a wonderful guidebook to learning this art from scratch. The author provides reader with so much detail about the best material from paper until the glue and how to prepare it, tools, and the most important is an introduction to unique analog-grid system.
This book is organized by level of difficulty and designed to progressively build skills as you complete projects from beginner level such as form and mine into the landscape, abstracts, and pets. I personally delight in chance to learning new skill and completing beautiful projects I can frame and display.
Thank you for Netgalley, Samuel Price and Walter Foster from Quarto Publishing Group for provided me this copy. My thoughts are my own.
This is a beautiful and fascinating book that I couldn't put down, and read in one sitting. Samuel explains his grid system and how it can be used as a tool for translating source imagery to your own collage canvases. The book has various projects inspired by famous artists. He starts with basic abstract compositions and finishes with complex portraiture pieces. This book gets a five stars for many reasons; the simplicity of explaining an art form, the balance between the text and imagery in the book as a whole, the beautiful and colourful step by step imagery, and the overall layout that rotated between artist biographies, projects and inspiring quotes. A truly inspiring read and I cannot wait to adopt collaging as an art form in my work. I will no doubt be doing every one of these exciting projects!
This is an excellent art tutorial book on creating realistic, gorgeous works of art with paper collage. Price shows how to use magazine pages and other paper to make a series of pieces, working from simple to very complex. Price is best known for his pet portraits and there are several examples in here, with you always choosing your own images to use so your pieces are your own. I love that each project is inspired by a famous artist who you get to know through that piece. I am still not convinced I could end up with anything like his work but the book is thorough and inspirational.
I read a temporary digital version of this book for review.
This was an enjoyable collage instructional book with lots of prompts / ideas primarily working on a grid system. I collaged a lot in elementary onward, and it was mostly just a glue stick that I used, and no sort of glue shine over top. I look forward to trying some of these projects.
The photographs of completed art along with a quick biography of the artist was something I read. I generally find lots of info and anecdotes dull, but I truly enjoyed this so much that I'm going to buy my own copy!
The project ideas will be small scale for my middle school papercraft group, as we have minimal time.
Having been using collage longer than any other form, I engaged this book out of familiarity but not expecting to learn so much! I really appreciated the detail, history and unfolding of technique presented!
I have experience with paper collage. Nevertheless I found heppful tips. It is written clearly and understandably and has photographs that work in tandem with the instructions.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC. This is my honest review.
This book blew my mind. I had no idea you could do so much with paper collage. I mean I’ve done the tissue paper collage but this is real art. (Not the tissue paper isn’t) The author explains it so well it really does seem doable.
Wow! What an amazing art book! I am very impressed with the author’s teaching of collage. Looking forward to starting the first project and learning how to create unique artwork. Very inspiring!
I liked it. Good insight and instructions on how to create art. I’m not good at it t but this is very helpful for me. It took me a few months to read the whole thing but I think I’ll give it a go and see what happens next.
Reading Samuel Price’s Paper Collage Workshop: A Fine Artist’s Guide to Creative Collage is like taking a cool, next level art course from a very dear friend.
The talented author is generous to share his wisdom: with encouraging words, tips and techniques, a great website, free resources, and an engaging, masterful style in this must-have book that propels you through your creative journey.
I received an electronic copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Using reference images in the same ratio as your canvas and a grid technique to help you focus on one square at a time, this book teaches you how to make your own beautiful paper collage artwork.
Fourteen increasingly more challenging projects build your skill and increase your comfort zone (hopefully). Each project is inspired by a particular artist's work, and you get a mini lesson in art history before you start.
IMHO--although a level of cautionary tips are welcome and useful, I found it disconcerting how many times the words "mistake" and "failure" showed up in the text.
