Jeni MacGregor fled from Massachusetts to Montana to marry Scott Maxwell. Being a mail-order bride had to be better than staying behind, where a violent suitor won’t take no for an answer.
When Scott refuses to marry her, without explanation, she’s left desperate in a town full of strangers—and she’s running out of time. Her only solace is that Scott puts her under the protection of the fearless men of The Maxwell Group, with his cousin Caleb as her personal bodyguard.
When her past catches up with her, Jeni has a hard decision to make.
I was originally going to DNF this at 39%. Then I skimmed to the end and saw that Jeni was now with Caleb and I was like WTF, is this a typo? Nope. After months of Jeni pining for Scott, the author killed off Scott on their wedding night after they consummated the marriage. No mourning period because she marries Caleb that night. She’s married to two different men in 24 hours. Could this really have happened!? IDK, but it was awkward.
Then the rest of the book is about Jeni and Caleb’s relationship. The transition was abrupt, to say the least. She’s naked with Caleb the night/morning after Scott was murdered— they’re intimate a week after. I had whiplash. Although the writing wasn’t bad, there was something wooden about the characters’ portrayals. I couldn’t really get into it. Aspects of the plot were bizarre. There were some typos. Doubt I’ll continue with this series.

The first of a five-book series, Jeni Finds Safety is the story of Jeni who escapes a man who insists on marrying by agreeing to be a mail-order bride to a rancher in the town of Hope, Montana.
Surprised at first at his rejection, she sticks it out and gets to know the entirety of the Maxwell Group which is a group of brothers and friends-turned-brothers who are nothing if not loyal to each other and their friends.
Tragedy strikes but Jeni finds a home - and the help of all those who don't hesitate to come to her aid when her past comes back to haunt her.
I was surprised at the end, but mostly because it just ended, as in the author stopped writing, not because the story was wrapped up. It was abrupt. Subsequent books had improved endings.
This was an enjoyable book to read. I've already pre-ordered the remaining books in the series and am currently enjoying book 3.
I enjoyed reading this book. The characters were interesting and the plot so far was intriguing. There are plot holes but I am assuming this being the 1st of the series that those holes will be addressed as the story progresses. I like how the main character goes after what she wants in the beginning. She seems to become complacent in the middle but finds her spunk again later on. Looking forward to reading more.
This was the first book of the 5 books that come together in one book.
This book felt like it was in a hurry, there were a few typos and even a few times repeated sections. It ended very abruptly to the point I thought I had accidently skipped ahead on the kindle file. Not even a feeling of a cliffhanger just felt like the end of a chapter but there was nothing left.
I think the story had potential but just something about the writing didn't sit well with me.

This book made me sad. And, every time I think of it I get a sad feeling. She killed off Scott. How can Jeni be happy when she is always feeling guilty about Scott's death. There will always be an emptiness there. And, the author never resolves two issues. What happens with Mr. Benson and why was Amy kidnapped. Why did Scott and the other "brothers" feel guilty about it?
Good story, bad editing...if it was edited. Since this was a free book, maybe it wasn't a finished product.
Didn't like all the unanswered questions I was left with. Was the baby a boy or girl. Was the baby Scott's or Caleb's. What happened to Mr. Benson? Did Will find Maggie?
I won't be reading any more Krissyann Granger books
They premise for the book was quite intriguing but it didn’t live up to that promise. The writing felt very heavy handed at points and quite rushed. There was also absolutely no ending whatsoever, I understand it’s meant to be a series but it really feels like the book ends in the middle of a chapter definitely not a standalone read. There were numerous errors in the kindle version.
I managed to read the whole book but found it irritating. The whole thing is a mix of 1880 and 2008 morals and attitudes. Trains and horses for transport but people can call each other? Women are to be seen but not heard and then insist loudly that they be taken seriously? What drivel!
I loved this book so much! It took me forever to read it only because I was having trouble finding the time to read it! But overall, I really enjoyed this book and the characters. I'm really looking forward to reading the next book and can't wait to see what is in store!
Seems like the author kept repeating herself and it drug the story on. She also should have finalized the villain at the end. Too many mishaps, jumped around too much.
What the heck did I just read? First nothing is resolved when it ends. So frustrating. Book seemed to last so so long. Just when I thought it was a HEA. Nope. Frustrating!!
I was expecting a simple, cute story but it was also part mystery and part romantic suspense. Jeni, running from an unwelcome suitor, becomes a mail order bride to solve the problem. After a lot of drama she is married into a wonderful large family of 6 men, some related, some not and their housekeepers who are more like mothers. The characters are wonderful, all with unique personalities, even the identical twins. An event from the past haunts all of them and causes many misunderstandings. Jeni’s pursuer won’t give up and sends his minions to kidnap her. There is a lot of tension, drama, and page-turning action sequences. The major theme is seeing past a person’s looks and getting to know them and judging them as people. Although the romance comes to a satisfying conclusion, the threat to Jeni is not resolved and the reason for it is a mystery that continues in the next book. Be prepared to read 5 books in total to get the complete story.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The first book in the series was great! I picked this book plus three others in the series I wanted to read book 1-3 first before reading the new one coming out on October 1st I am so glad I downloaded these books from Bookprout the Maxwell’s are awesome. In this one Jeni is a mail-order bride but when she gets to Montana her groom does not want her. Now get this it is because she is beautiful. For as long as Jeni could remember men only see the outside never who she really is and let’s face it that made her feel scared. Caleb is the first man who does not make her feel unsafe and she wants him for her husband. The journey that Jeni and Caleb take is one you need to take too. This well written tale blew me away and I cannot wait to read the next book. There is action, misunderstanding, and set ups for the next books. I highly recommend this western I loved it. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.
I enjoyed this book. I really, really like the characters and am glad this is going to be a series. There is love, adventure, danger, plot twists, and friendship. There were typos at times which could be distracting to some (the reason for 4 stars instead of 5) but honestly, I find errors/typos in books from well-established authors who -I assume- hire the top-of-the-line editors in the field. It is what it is. The plot is engaging and the bold first line in the book starts it off with a bang. A good debut novel for the author. For those that care, there is cursing (no "F" words though), two accounts of physical assault (trigger warning), and some sex (but not explicit). I would recommend to others.
I've just started this series. I love the distinct characters and the camaraderie that's evident among the Maxwell men and their family and friends. Each of the 'brothers' is different yet likeable. (That handsome bunch can guard me anytime!) I can't wait to see how each man finds his bride. The romance is just right, warm and well written but not too steamy. Each book apparently has a happy ending, but there's a long game, too. You get the best of both worlds in this western romance meets western saga. I can't wait to see where it leads!
The story cut off at the end without any resolving of the problem. Does this mean you have to buy the second in the series to discover the ending?
I did not like the heroine one bit. She was selfish, irritating and pushy, causing endless amounts of trouble and endangerment. How she could say she was in love beggars belief. I will give no spoilers however.
This was a free book. Story was interesting but I refuse to put purchase additional books from this author. A person is bless with the talent to write and choose to tarnish said gift by using the Lords name in vain throughout the story. Sex scenes you can skip but not the written word!
My mother in law got me this book because it was from a local writer. I read it on vacation and cruised through it! I am not a lover of reading series because I’m bummed I don’t know the ending after finishing the book - not as much gratification. However, this book definitely had curveballs and was not what I expected!! I appreciate that.
The first book in the Maxwell Brides Series a well written story with a very good storyline, by a new Author to me. I want to read more in this series by her. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book is a fascinating read. There are twists and turns that are completely unexpected. Found it every difficult to put down and recommend it for anyone who enjoys Western novels with realistic characters.
The stories we’re exciting. I couldn’t put the books down. It was sat of the tormented put women through. It still not changed any today. I enjoyed reading the joy that the Maxwells had. And how they grew as a family.
I thought this one was a bit ridiculous and romancey. It was sort of silly. I finished it and it kept my interest but was just too weird for my taste. I didn't like that she was too pretty. That was the reason her groom rejected her. Just seemed a bit far-fetched.
Best book I have read recently drama silence romance and when I thought the book was done it kept going I cried laughed and really enjoyed this book and recommend it .looking forward to reading more books by this author .
So the story and the characters was great couldn't put it down. Really needs some editing. Repeated sentences drove me nuts. The random underline, not sure what that was about.
Almost finished this in on day but had to get to sleep. I read book 2 first, and decided that I needed to start at the beginning an I'm so glad I did. The characters are real and this had me laughing and crying. Will definitely read the rest of this series.
