Amdani: Gwers Mewn Cariad

Rate this book
Llyfr o gyfres Amdani, i ddysgwyr Lefel Canolradd. Nofel ysgafn am ddyn sy'n syrthio mewn cariad â'i diwtor. Mae Liam yn newydd i ddosbarth Liz ym Mis medi. Ar yr wyneb mae'n hollol wahanol i'w diwtor Cymraeg. Er gwaetha'r gwahaniaeth mewn oed mae carwriaeth yn datblygu rhwng y ddau, a Liz yn wynebu creisus tipyn mwy cymhleth na sut i gyflwyno treigladau..."Credaf y bydd dysgwyr yn cael budd mawr o ddarllen y llyfr, gan fwynhau’r stori ar yr un pryd." For me, two stars really, but I'm giving the third star because Gog learners will probably enjoy it at least slightly more than I did, and I'm the first reviewer | I really basically hated this. I would never have read this story in English, a woman who has spent 30 years teaching her family to take her for granted and then one day has had enough and decides to burn it all down by cheating instead of communicating. It's homework for class, so I had to keep pushing through, and it was an uphill battle. So many of the Cyfres Amdani are somewhat Gog, which is frustrating as a De learner, but this was so Gog it was somewhere in Greenland. And the ratio of new vocabulary defined in footnotes to familiar words was awful. Often there would be ten footnotes in two consecutive sentences. There are almost 400 new vocabulary words in forty-some pages of content. Readers don't learn new words when it's all new words, they learn new words when they get the gist from the context of a sentence they otherwise understand. Because this was the Kindle version and hadn't been formatted properly, the footnotes weren't pop-ups, they took me to the end of the book where the translation list was, with no link back to the text I had left. Since in many places every other word needed translation, it meant instead of just reading the book I kept the Kindle screen in navigation mode, tapping "go back to location..." back and forth. The whole thing was not worth my time.

My second Canolradd and tonnes of new and unfamiliar vocab to learn. It’s always a bit intimidating to be faced with so many new words you haven’t come across before, but with each subsequent exposure, you gain a little more in confidence. I’ve got used to feeling rubbish in my language skills and then wildly confident in a see saw of ‘I can read this!!!’ To ‘whatttt. I don’t understand anything’ which I think is fairly standard in anyone learning to read a new language!

The story itself is interesting and well written for Canolradd levels. Perfect amount of challenge but not too much that you feel way out of your depth. Also loved the illustrations!

I’m so happy to have come this far and as always, can’t wait to keep improving.
