Queenie & the Krakens

Rate this book
Naomi Queen swore to herself she’d never get involved with criminals. She didn’t want any part of the world that raised her because she knew the trouble the malicious underground could bring. But all that changes when she witnesses a murder between a gang of mermen shifters.

Swept into the maelstrom of the paranormal criminal underbelly wasn’t exactly high on her to-do list. Neither was being hunted by the murderous gang that called themselves the Rogue Waves.

With her life in danger, Naomi has no other choice but to accept protection from the deadly MC’s rivals. But hiding at the Kraken Motorcycle Club’s compound was the last thing she wanted. These mermen are dangerous, violent, and sexy. Everything she’s tried to avoid. They’ll chew her up and spit her out like the vicious sharks that they are… or they’ll try to.

Naomi has a few tricks of her own up her sleeve, and if the Krakens thought she’d be a meek little witness, they have another thing coming. She can be as ruthless as the monster whose name they carry, and by the time she wreaks havoc upon their lives—and their hearts—they won’t even know what hit them.

Queenie & the Krakens is a Reverse Harem, Why Choose standalone that contains content not suitable for readers under 18. This book contains alphahole men, MM, MMF, and MFM pairings as well as explicit dom/sub themes.

Gorgeous, gorgeous cover... Dissapointing story. This reverse harem mc shapeshifters romance sounded amazing but 7% in and I already wanted to DNF, nevertheless I continued.

I was intrigued by the beautiful cover and after reading the synopsis, I was hooked into Queenie's story but sadly the book did not reach my expectations. First and foremost, this is a romance and I think the author failed to write a romance filled with a meaningful connection between all 6 characters. The characters felt disconnected and their infatuation for one another was unbelievable. I felt like it all happened too fast and the only thing holding them together was the sex which.... I'll be honest, even that was boring. Yes, it sounded exciting but towards the end I was so not invested in the characters that I didn't even care.

The characters... The men, specifically, were not likeable and I understand macho men in romances but they just looked ridiculous and I couldn't really see how Queenie was supposed to fall for them. On that note... The use of the word "b! tch" and "female" to describe women.... Really?? What was the need of that? It completely put me off, specially when the love interests are calling the main character a b! Tch!

Overall, nothing about this book managed to capture my attention and it was forgettable.

This is my second read in a row that was an amazing concept but I took issue with some of the execution.

First of all, the cover is stunning. It feels like - in general - paranormal/monster romances (even reverse harem romances) skew to white heroines, so reading about a Black heroine who's a mermaid in the Caribbean was very cool. I also feel like I haven't read a reverse harem romance in a while, so I was stoked for that because I went through many periods where that was my jam. And motorcycle club romances always hit the spot (provided there's no cheating) because I have a thing for Sons of Anarchy.

The plot seemed simple enough (all info in this paragraph can be found in the description): the heroine Naomi doesn't want to be involved with criminals, but after witnessing a merman MC club murder someone, suddenly she's swept into their world under the protection of their rival club. Cue she's under their protection... but she doesn't want to be.

I like this kind of straightforward plot because I assumed it would lend a lot of time to developing character relationships. Kind of like A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor, which has a very minimal plot... I didn't care and LOVED the book because I loved the relationship building. Unfortunately I didn't feel we got a lot of development of the heroes or their relationship with Naomi.

There are five guys in the harem technically, but one I'm not sure if we should even count because on page he interacts with Queenie five times. And in only one of those instances do they have a full conversation. I think the fact that he was included and got his own POV was a hinderance to the overall book because we really didn't know him.

Even the other guys who got more page-time I don't feel we knew well.

There were questionable choices with some of the writing. At times - especially in the beginning - it felt very stereotypical "badass fantasy heroine who's tougher than she looks". Being super quippy with the guys after waking up at their compound, kicking a guy in the balls... there were definitely some cringe worthy moments. Another thing that made me pause was when one guy was info-dumping his trauma to her... while she fucked another guy. Like - what?!

Also as a side note, it said this book included MM content but it was very sparse.

I liked the world it was set in, the idea of mermen being MC clubs, the "spelling" of bikes to run on water. I wish we had seen more of their time as mermen/women because I think Naomi only shifted once, at the very beginning of the book, so it was underutilized, to me.

Overall, this book was entertaining and no regrets picking it up on a Sunday night for a late night binge read.

2 3/4 "Well Alrighty Then!"

I liked the action and the motorcycle club stuff a lot! I liked some of the sexy times, but not most of them and I did not like one main character specifically. In general there were A LOT of bodily fluids exchanged. To the point I was taken out of the scene and grossed out. Yep grossed out. Several times. I also didn't like the climatic (pun intended) sex scene. There was no coercion or forced anything but I just didn't like the sex scenes. I did LOVE that Queenie was a bad ass. So... Happy reading!

DNF @ 6%

This is one of those books that sounded promising from the blurb, but I actually hated once I started reading it.

Let me start off by saying that I really liked the FMC. She was fierce, strong, knew her own worth, and didn't take shit from anyone. The problems started for me once the MMCs started showing up.

Every single one of the MMCs that I met in the 6% of the book that I managed to make it through were assholes. Without exception. They were also extremely sexist, and all of them—without exception—referred to women, including the FMC, as bitches.

"Bitch randomly appeared in front of my bike," he supplies cooly.MMC #1

I've never felt possessive over a bitch before.MMC #2

I shouldn't care about some bitch who was in the wrong place at the wrong time [...]MMC #3

All of those quotes are in relation to the FMC.

Also, MMC #1 accidentally hits her with his water bike/jet ski/whatever and then sees that she's been stabbed. He contemplates leaving her to die, then decides it would look bad for their club if she washes up dead on their shore, so he grudgingly decides to take her back to get medical help. At this point he starts to get horny since she's naked, and has to tell himself to stop. Because you know, she's halfway dead and needs urgent medical care. What a PoS.

Then there's MMC #3, who's described as being "late forties or early fifties", coming in with this gem after he starts lusting over the injured FMC:
I force myself to get a grip. She's half my fucking age. Not that I think it matters much. A lot of the club honeys are way younger than me and I've fucked them all.

And it's about this time that MMC #3 decides to lock her up in their compound and deny her both freedom and agency, before threatening to 'discipline' her if she doesn't fall in line and do what he says.

So yeah, I'm done here. I see plenty of misogynists and gross older men lusting after young women in real life, I don't need that garbage in my escapist paranormal romance novels too.

Motorcycle club ✅
Black Female MC✅
Filled with Diversity ✅
Witty and Gritty story✅

“Naomi Queen swore to herself she’d never get involved with criminals. She didn’t want any part of the world that raised her because she knew the trouble the malicious underground could bring. This book was a bookclub pick for August and my mind is BLOWN😳😳😳😳. From the first page my wheels were turning, fully entertained and pulled into this fictional world. Queenie was so *clutch your pearls “ moment to moment and I happy to have this author on my radar! I wouldn’t have picked this on my own, but that’s the beauty of bookclub- taking you out of comfort zones - that’s what this Caribbean Paranormal did !🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️IN LOVE - PREPARE YOURSELF, HOLD ON FOR THE RIDE that’s all I’ll say ….

I have so many thoughts—

These characters absolutely CRUSHED me. The flaw each of them have makes them much realer. Each and every character in this book have their own struggles. Take Queenie (Naomi) for an example. She struggles with letting people into her heart. I think the way the author portrays her is very much real. To see her journey into accepting her Krakens is 🥺

I love that a thick guy is included in the harem as well. It was an absolute delight to meet this sweet guy. Delphin is definitely underrated. I wish to see more of him and Queenie together in the future.

I'd love to see more work from this author~ I'm obsessed now 🥰

Another amazing book from Aleera. She is able to tangle together humor, and smut, and tenderness like no other author I read and this book is no exception. One minute I am literally laughing out loud and the next I am tearing up. Any book that can pull real emotion from me in a winner in book.

I had such a hard time picking a favorite out of these boys because they all have so many things that I love. The pacing was great and I loved how this story jumped right into everything. It’s a great steamy standalone, though I have my fingers crossed for a spin-off 🤞

Queenie & the Krakens was my first book by Aleena Anaya Ceres and I wasn't even really sure what I was getting into. It's not my norm, but I will try anything once.

Naomi is a victim of being at the wrong place at the wrong time and seeing something she shouldn't have. When she is "saved" by an MC, she gets caught up with all the men.
I'm not sure what I as expecting, but a paranormal, MC, Why Choose was not on the docket. But I liked that Queenie herself was this strong, bad ass FMC that may have been hiding a part of herself, but also fit with each of her men in very different ways. From Rock, to Box, to Slug, to Delphin and Scorpion, each man filled a different part of what Naomi needed. And what they needed right back. They needed each other to complete their little family. And while I'm not always a fan of Why Choose romances, I liked that each man was so very different. Not always a fan of every one of them, but did like that they came alive under Queenie.

This isn't a book that I would automatically pick up, but it was a decent enough story if you like lots of sex with some plot. I thought parts were funny and over the top sexual, but what kept me pulled in was Queenie. She was the ruling force that kept me coming back for more. The men were just an added bonus. Almost an afterthought, but they definitely filled a void. I'd be curious what else this author writes and was satisfied with this story. Queenie can definitely get it with all her men!

Got this on SYKD, started it the same day. The concept was great, and this world seems quite interesting. I didn't buy into the relationships at all; everything was insta-lust, which was mistaken for insta-love on the characters' part. I always struggle with how MC romances portray the MMCs' perceptions and opinions of women, which is not all that different here. But if that never bothers you, then you likely will be fine.

Also, there's no tentacles if you were expecting some based on the cover and title and shifters.

A Queen

Normal I hate the whole she’s our queen thing in RH, ok, it annoyed me a little here to. But this is an amazing book. My favorite things are that 1) in addition to the FMC being a Black girl, she has a black best friend, and other characters in the book are Black and POC. 2) A diverse harem. 3) Queenie was a badass who legit didn’t need saving. There are a few things I would have enjoyed more if they would have be done differently, but overall this is one of the most well rounded books I’ve come across. It reminds me a lot of Fleeing Fate by Sabrina Day. Each of these has the one element the other was missing.

DNF at 20%. There is a lot to like about this book. The plot set up is interesting, the main character has some great talents, and there are some interesting side characters. However, I hate how MC characters talk about women! And one of the presumable love interests has “slept around with every single honey in the club“ and I just don’t want to be there for it.

It’s a fascinating world where mer people exist, but it’s just not worth it to keep going. Plus, there are a lot of editing errors in here.

Trigger warnings: EXTREMELY dubious consent, murder, blood, kidnapping, explosions, discussions of child sexual abuse, misogyny, gun violence, PTSD, drugging

Oh boy. Look, this is very clearly not my kind of book at all. But I needed a motorcycle club book for a readathon prompt and I thought that a paranormal one might work better for me, purely because it's easier to convince myself that people and organisations like this are entirely fictional.

And, like, YES. It was definitely easier to do that when the bikers are mermen who can ride their motorbikes on water. But also the casual misogyny was a LOT to deal with.

That being said, I did like Naomi as a character. She's extremely sassy and doesn't sit around waiting to be rescued. And the way she .

But the smut was.............not it for my poor lil ace brain. There was a LOT of extremely dubious consent. There were a LOT of fluids all over the damned place. Every single dude had a baseball bat sized penis. There's a lot of sex at weirdly inappropriate times. And I'm legitimately shocked that Naomi doesn't spend half the book with a UTI, a yeast infection or both because there is a LOT of bacteria ending up inside of her. I'm also amazed she doesn't end up pregnant fifty three times over because there's not a condom to be seen, and the full extent of a safe sex conversation is one of the dudes asking if she's on the pill but then telling the reader that he doesn't really need an answer because their tech guy hacked into her medical records to check.

So, uh, yeah. This was not at all for me. But YMMV.

Also, I'm salty because this is set in the Caribbean but it never says where so I can't use it for my Read Around the World challenge >.<

Aleera always knows how to hook me whether it’s an RH book, Fantasy, or Dark Romance. Queen and her boys were no exception, I devoured this book completely in one sitting, as I do all her books.

I honestly feel like Queenie is a very unique character that Aleera has written, yeah she’s strong willed and beautiful but she also didn’t care what anyone thought. She had her boys at the end and anyone who dared give her a second look would probably drown in her path. I love the heart and soul that went into queenie you could really see all her dynamics and while her secret may have been easily predictable when it comes out it does cause all the angst and pain as you would think.

The Krakens they gave me wrapped around their finger like they do Queenie, they all bring something amazing to the table to love. I’m sure we can all agree that Slug deserves to be loved and cherish at all costs though. He’s such a sweetie and I just want to have all the happiness.

I love the story all in all the characters had depth and the story moved and progressed at great speed, I loved how everything tied together and nothing was left unanswered by the end of the book.

What can I say? I'm a sucker for Aleera's reverse harems. It's always difficult to pick a guy!

I loved how diverse and fleshed out everyone was. The multiple povs are one my favorite things Aleera does. It helps me connect to characters in ways I wouldn't otherwise. The premise itself isn't something I would typically pick up, but I found myself invested in this motorcycle gang.

The story stands on its own within its genre, had great pacing, and had a lot of fun characters. It never ceases to amaze me how quicky I get invested in Aleera's characters.

If you choose to pick this up, please heed trigger warnings. If you're willing to give darker elements a try, definitely check this one out! I already can't wait to give it a reread!

Ok. So. No tentacles.🥺 So that was kind of a disappointment.
But.
Everything else was really good.

I really enjoyed this book.
The characters, were everything.
This FMC is a complete badass and Everyone underestimates her. I love it.

The plot was super fun with some action and some rough times.
The sex was hot and dirty and Box was all teeth and roughness.
The characters were each unique and different and added their own thing to the story that helped enrich it.
And the ending was great.

I just really liked it.
All the mershifters and the magic and the land and sea motorcycles were cool as shit.

I will for sure be looking into more from this author. I’m really glad I picked it up. I had a really good time with it.

Aleera knocks it out of the park again with this S T E A M Y Y Y mer shifter MC book! Queenie is the strong female protagonist we all need, and she is truly so well written! I loved the story, the steam, the dialogue, world building, just everything honestly. The relationships within the group are well flushed out and just a pleasure to read along with. Highly recommend!

I want her to hurt me, to destroy me. I want her to take those black leather boots and stomp all over my heart and fuck me up until I’m not the same when this started. And I want to do the same to her. “You call that a blow, Queenie?” I taunt. “That was shit. Hit me again. Hit me harder.”

I recently finished Queenie & the Krakens and also did a Live book chat with my friend and book club cohost discussing this book. It’s still very much on my mind. Like I can’t stop thinking about it. I said in that Live that at first I was nervous this book would be trying to attempt too much at once (rh, mc, mermen shifters, set in a world full of paranormal beings plus magic) but I honestly have never had this much fun reading a motorcycle club romance. This book had me laughing so much. I loved how Aleera was able to have the serious moments but also let her characters be their funny, sarcastic, and authentic selves. I always love it when a book doesn’t take itself too seriously and let’s itself be ridiculous and over the top from time to time. This was such an amazing pick and I 1000% will be anxiously awaiting Lourdes book.

“Nothing sexier than a woman who has the ability to shoot you in the heart.”

I loved all the MCs. I thought they had undeniable chemistry even though Queenie tried to fight it hard. All the guys were very distinguishable and easy to keep track of which can be very hard when there’s five of them. My one and only area where I wanted more was with Delfin. We barely got his POV and he got less time with Queenie compared to the other guys so yeah I wish we had gotten more but I still loved what we got.

“Then hold tight to the edge, Queenie.” I obey. “Daddy Kraken is going to show you how it’s done.”

The writing was wonderful and addicting. It hooked me very early on and it didn’t slow down for me at all. There’s action, murder mystery, a chase scene on motorcycles, rival mcs out for blood and a club run by demons. And the smut? I’m gonna let this list speak for itself:

Sword crossing, Using panties as a gag, Bondage, 69, 🍆tattoos & piercings, Masturbating with her panties/panty sniffing, Cum play, Breath play/choking, Pegging, Spitting, Spanking, Praise, Orgasm denial/edging, DP, Daddy kink, Masochism

4.5⭐️ 4.5🔥

TWs: witnessing a murder, attempted murder, kidnapping of the FMC (not by mmcs), multiple on page graphic murders, guns, blood

I loved it so much. An amazing spin on supernatural biker gang with a badass female and absolutely hot guys 🥵

The plot was spectacular and the way it developed, I was hooked from the beginning 🤞 And the plot line of Queenie singlehandedly destroying the Roughest Waves was so freaking awesome 😍

The s*x scenes were mind blowing and the relationship development and the way the emotions were described was perfect 💯

The ending was so satisfying though I would have loved an epilogue 💙

This book was an adventure!
I was not prepared for the heat packed into this book.
I love the MC theme mixed with a fantasy world. The fantasy aspect in this book was so easy to follow, which I really appreciated. I can get so caught up in fantasy books, I also get really overwhelmed trying to make sense of the physics and laws. But Queenie was so digestible, the laws of the magic given little by little in a very sensible fashion.
I can totally see this world vividly as I read, as if it was a cool new show on the sy-fi channel.
Now for the Why Choose? plot. This was SPICYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
As I finished this book I had to commend the author for so clearly writing the smutty scenes, reading scenes with multiple partner can get so blurry and confusing. But this book was very clearly detailed, leaving nothing up for questioning. I clearly could "see" how point A got to point B and so forth.
Super kinky, and a fun story to read.

3.5⭐️ 3🌶️ It’s intended to be hot as hell but i didn’t like how some scenes were written sometimes. could have been a 5🌶️

Fun quick read that is very smut oriented which I love. Queenie is such a brat lol. Love that for her. Wish it felt more Caribbean. Even though it’s sets in the DR it definitely needed some island twang and maybe more scenery so it made me feel like that’s where I was. Either way, if you are into insta-love, Sons of Anarchy, merfolk, other paranormal species, RH/MMF with pansexual reps check it out!
P.S: I thought Queenie was from DR but I’m unsure now…. Lourdes definitely seems to be tho.

No. Just, no. Like, I probably should have DNF'd this one, but I needed to know if Queenie would get better.

Spoiler alert - she didn't.

I love a tough heroine; who doesn't, right? When they're a badass that can take care of themselves it's empowering. What's not empowering, is when it's smashed into your head every other sentence how badass they are and how they're not just tough, but they're *literally* tougher than everyone else (and probably even an entire MC?) So yeah, no, this was hella annoying. And it was a bummer because I really had high hopes for Queenie but my god she was annoying. And, to be honest, the guys weren't much better. I've never seen such a "badass MC cabinet" completely fall for a random woman after 5 minutes before and try to make it believable. And obviously, Queenie was too badass for love so she was just using them and yada yada and it was just so tired.

The plot line was so intriguing, but the execution just fell so flat and I honestly don't know how I finished this. I don't know why one of the dudes was in the harem (he barely interacted with Queenie), the rest of them were either boring or written too bananas, and I truly was so tired of Queenie being so judgmental and so much smarter and better than literally every other character.

I did not like this, Sam I am. I wanted to, so badly. MCs full of mermen?! Who can also walk on water? And have spelled motorcycles they can ride on water? YES, please! But ugh, it was just written so weirdly I could't finish soon enough.

Here's the thing...the idea of this book is so interesting and there were moments of enjoyment but I'm left so confused. In full transparency I downloaded it bc it kept showing up on my timeline and I've wanted to read more paranormal. However, I didn't enjoy the writing. The first 100 pages were clunky and then maybe 80 pages of sex, it felt like overkill. Now the action scenes were fun but then immediately I thought this is ridiculously unserious it's barely believable but hey I enjoyed it. I think the trouble I had was Queenie's not like other girls framing. Hated it. Then the sexist comments throughout the dialogue honeys vs whores, weak for wanting to be loved, penis size. Ma'am go kick rocks. Oh and to spend so much time talking about the mom being passed around to then use the guys girl what. Anywho if you want to read just for the sex enjoy but if you're looking for world building, character development (every Kraken character was the same), or great storytelling I would say lower your expectations. Now would I stop someone from reading it, no but don't have any expectations just read for the vibes.

CN: dubious consent, stalking, violence, ruffeing, rape, child abuse, drug use and overdose, ptsd, panic attacks, absentee parent, complicated family dynamics, impact and fluid play, humiliation kink

Everything that was after finding out who Naomi’s dad was could have been left out of the book.

Why Choose Why Not?

This book was on go from the very beginning. We have Naomi, a mermaid whose a firecracker. She gets caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnesses a murder. And now her life is in danger. Which brings her to lean on the people she swore she never be with. Her attraction weakens her to not one but five Motorcycle Riding Mermen. This is Fantasy Why Choose Greatness. Queenie was multifaceted. We had possessive men, secrets, action scenes, spice, and a strong FM. Highly recommend.

Making an MC of Mermen was a novel and entertaining combination. The relationships between Queenie and all the dudes - there were 5 - was not as developed as I would have liked. We got background on some more than others. The main appeal of Queenie for the men seemed to be "she's not like other honeys" (ugh) and the sexual attraction was off the charts. Being tough was Queenie's defining characteristic. Lots of spice. Enjoyable enough to justify the evening spent reading it.

I don’t think I can accurately describe how amazing this book was. Ceres is queen when it comes to smut because Omg that was hot.

I also find books with more than 3-4 men fall flat to me because you don’t get to know each man. There are five and I didn’t have a single problem. All were so unique!

I’m about to read all her back list!
