Breaking Point became one of my favorite books instantly. One of the best climbing stories ever. Gripping detailed description of the first ascent of central buttress of Mount Hunter’s south face was unlike most climbing stories I’ve ever read. Randall not only pulls you in to make you climb the mountain alpine style in the storm with you, but he weaves in the story of John Waterman, the climber who attempted the climb solo expeditions style before them.
The story had more meaning to me than to an average climber, as I’ve climbed Mt.Foraker, the mountain next to Mount Hunter, the same alpine style the year prior, and so was able to relate to high Alaska climbing adventure. Just like Glen, Peter, and Athens, we’ve spent much more time on the mountain than we planned to, run out of food, and surprised ourselves by surviving to tell our story. I’ve waited 41 years to read this book, but believe it would make a great movie.
Gifted to my by John Lind. An excellent account of the first alpine style ascent of a route on Mt. Hunter. Spellbinding. And interesting to read about and acquaintance, Peter Metcalf, who was on the team.
I read this in high school and LOVED it! It is my second favorite mountaineering book, right behind "Minus 148 Degrees." I would highly recommend reading it! :)
