English title: This Alpha Is Determined Despite Physical Disability [Interstellar]
I've been reading a bunch of historical or wuxia novels recently, so I wanted to switch things up a bit. That's why I picked up this ABO novel, set in an interstellar world with gender politics. It's a contract marriage to love kinda story, but what I wasn't expecting was that it's also a transmigration story. The alpha, Bai Li, is actually a transmigrator into a novel and has been living in the novel world for many years. Because he tried and was unable to avoid getting his leg injured in the past, he's quite pessimistic and jaded about his future in this world, as he knows that his character gets injured again before ultimately dying a sad, lonely death.
In comes our MC and omega, Lu Zhao, who gets assigned to Bai Li for marriage. Lu Zhao is a well known and skilled mecha pilot in the military, nicknamed the "Eagle of the Empire," and is looked up to by many people as the only omega mecha pilot. When his marriage is announced, there are a lot of online comments from outraged users that Lu Zhao is getting "wasted" on the retired playboy, Bai Li, who's a well known flirt. The online comments compare their marriage to a flower forcibly planted on concrete, leading to his new nickname, "Empire's Concrete."
While they initially keep their interactions to a minimum and treat each other more like roommates rather than lovers, they gradually get to know each other and the walls slowly go down. I personally wasn't a huge fan of their interactions during the getting to know each other period as I found them kind of awkward. I only started enjoying their relationship after the feelings developed and they actually got together for real.
While neither of them had an easy past, Bai Li had it especially hard given that he was the villain in the original novel. He did everything he could, but his leg still got injured to the point where he can no longer pilot mecha which is his life passion, and the whole incident was hushed up because a member of the royal family was involved, so he's kinda given up. Rather than letting himself feel, he keeps everything his anger and frustration bottled up inside and hides behind a shameless and flirtatious mask that he shows to everyone else.
It's not until Bai Li meets Lu Zhao, who has a very straightforward nature and isn't afraid of confrontation, that slowly he reveals his true self. And even then, he doesn't fully trust Lu Zhao as he's not sure what will happen when the og protagonist, his brother, comes back into the story. In the original story, Lu Zhao is one of his brother's lovers, and his brother's return is what triggers that plot point. I'm glad that he quickly realizes Lu Zhao won't leave him and cares about him even with his brother's return, so he finally feels comfortable confiding in him about knowing what will happen and being unable to prevent it.
I really enjoyed the ML's shameless nature. He's not afraid to say anything and I love that about him. From the beginning where he reacted to online comments saying he's not worth of marrying Lu Zhao by posting a selfie of himself to his social media account with the caption "I must be the handsomest piece of concrete," I knew he would be a fun character to follow, and I wasn't wrong. He had me chuckling so many times.
One of the most interesting characters for me was actually Bai Li's mom, Bai Ying. I felt bad for her because she was stuck in an unhappy and abusive marriage for so long and wasn't able to escape due to her permanent mark and her need to be constantly around her husband's pheromones. She easily could have suffered a tragic fate alongside her husband and second son, but instead she planned for herself and found herself a future where she could live independently. I like that the author didn't try to have her reconcile with Bai Li; they were estranged for too many years for that to be realistically possible, so I think she had the best ending she could have had.
As far as the story goes, it's roughly split into two parts. The first part focuses more on their relationship, but after they officially get together about halfway through, the story shifts to focus on external matters such as a mecha tournament and battles against an alien race while throwing in plenty of face slapping towards everyone who put down Bai Li previously, while he gets justice for the wrongs committed against him.
I was much more into the second half, especially as Bai Li finally gets his revenge against his father and brother and others. I also thought the story in the second half touched on some really uplifting themes. There were a couple moments that had me feeling emotional and extra proud on behalf of our main characters. For example, it's possible for someone with a serious leg injury or even an omega to pilot and do really well in a mecha tournament, a role that was traditionally associated with strong alphas due to the heavy physical toil on the body. Or that even if you're small and insignificant like an ant, but with enough ants, you can impact the large immovable tree and really make a change.
Overall I enjoyed the story and reading how Bai Li overcomes all the obstacles that the world's will throws his way. I just thought the bit about the Zergs at the end was kind of random. Maybe the author threw them in because they wanted to give Bai Li a chance to get involved with the military again, but I could have done without it. If the story had ended with the tournament and the face slapping, that would've been perfect imo.
I'm ending my review with some of my favorite scenes from the story:
Bai Li loves nothing more than to get a rise/reaction out of others haha
Lu Zhao was pulled into it, chuckling along.
"You're something else."
Bai Li laughed as he drove. "I just love seeing that expression-when their brains shut down."
"What exactly did you tell them?" Lu Zhao, strangely not annoyed at all, asked, "When I walked out, they were staring at me like they wanted to see right through me."
"I didn't say much." Bai Li laughed even harder. "I just said I missed you and wanted to be the first alpha you saw when you came out."
"Damn." Lu Zhao found Bai Li's shamelessness truly astounding. Bai Li had said it so naturally that even Lu Zhao's mind went blank for a second.
----------------
Bai Li has a special way of handling the media and paparazzi XP
"Model of a harmonious couple, Mr. Bai Li here," Bai Li announced, hooking the bag over his wrist and patting his own chest, then raised his joined hand with Lu Zhao in front of the filming drones. "And Major General Lu Zhao."
The cameras clicked incessantly.
Bai Li turned to the reporters and called out, "Choose the good-looking shots, the handsome ones, and don't forget to Photoshop in some pink hearts."
Wow. Lu Zhao's hand was still held tightly, his expression calm, though he was marveling internally.
This guy actually didn't do the peace sign.
He went straight for the hand-holding, even doing a public self-introduction.
And even requested they add pink hearts.
----------------
awwwww when Lu Zhao chooses Bai Li
Lu Zhao exhaled. "I don't know what you mean, but I know Tang Kai Yuan is problematic." He paused, then added, "I don't understand what you mean by 'fate,' but there's one thing you need to understand."
Bai Li remained silent.
Lu Zhao said, "If fate makes me leave you, then fate can go to hell."
Bai Li lifted his head and looked at Lu Zhao.
"Don't give me a choice," Lu Zhao didn't avert his gaze. "Bai Li, let me be addicted to you."
----------------
Lu Zhao thought of Bai Li in the isolation room, frowning even in his sleep. His tone softened significantly. "I know." After a few seconds, he added, "Do you want me to go with you first?"
As soon as he said it, they heard a kid outside the car shouting to his dad, "I'm not going to kindergarten unless you come with me!"
His dad responded, "You're already five years old. You're a grown-up now, and you need to go to kindergarten by yourself!"
Bai Li: "."
Lu Zhao: “..."
"No need," Bai Li shrank into his seat. "This year, Li Li is eight years old and can handle his follow-up alone."
Lu Zhao laughed all the way from the hospital gate to the examination building.
----------------
when Bai Li doesn't let Lu Zhao shirk his military duty... what a responsible hubby <3
"This is no longer just between two people. It's not about who's doing what for whom. It's something that must be done." Bai Li said softly, "I may have left the military world, but I'm still a soldier."
That thorn in the heart started to ache again.
Lu Zhao sometimes really wished Bai Li could live a little more foolishly - even just a little. Then he could go on pretending not to see, pretending not to know.
But Bai Li chose to live clearly, and he wouldn't let Lu Zhao escape either.
On top of their love, being lovers, friends, and family - there was something else pressing down on them: responsibility.
And it wasn't just Lu Zhao, the Empire's Eagle honored with glory, who bore that weight. People like Bai Li also held it up.
----------------
Bai Li's media interviews are always so chaotic XP
"Back when you first got married, there were rumors... about you being a freeloader," the reporter said awkwardly, obviously embarrassed, but still very curious about Bai Li's state of mind. He pressed on, "What do you think about those claims? Sorry, no offense meant- you don't have to answer."
"No particular opinion," Bai Li said earnestly.
"Freeloading tastes great."
Lu Zhao: "..." Bai Li's always been something else.
Reporter: "..." Uh, this... this isn't quite the inner reflection I imagined.
"So, um, what do you think about the criticism that you allowed your omega partner to work outside, and even participate in mecha battles?" A reporter asked cautiously. "No offense- this topic is still controversial in the Empire."
"Other people's thoughts and actions don't concern me. As for my partner's work, I fully support it," Bai Li said. "I gotta freeload, right? Freeloading tastes really good."
The first half moved the reporters; the second half left them all choking.
This book made me laugh and cry so many times! I never thought I would cry over an ant analogy okay?!
This is about an outwardly arrogant and rebellious but inwardly afraid alpha and a super straightball omega who fall in love and become super supportive husbands as they fight against fate. There's a lot of laughter, tears, and supporting characters that shine in their own way. I loved this so much.
My expectations were minimal going into this considering the hodge-podge mix of genres and tropes—interstellar, mecha, ABO, arranged marriage, military and politics, transmigration into a novel—but it was a pleasant surprise.
Bai Li wakes up as a canon-fodder older brother to the ML of a novel, and he already knows his fate is a terrible one. Despite that, his story is a story of persistence.
In the face of an unyielding fate that wants to see him destroyed, he is, in his own words, but one small ant. An ant trying to butt its head against a large tree, knowing it can't shake it down. But maybe, just maybe, if he takes one step forward and carves out a path, there will be others behind him, walking the same path, ants en masse who can finally fell the tree.
Despite it's poetic message, the text is largely humorous, and I enjoyed that. Lu Zhao, his partner assigned by a government matching scheme, is the grumpy one to Bai Li's sunshine, and yet their initial banter flows very well. Their dynamic is well done, and there is a lot of emotional growth as well as character development.
I can’t find myself picking any faults here, from storyline to characters to translation. I had a great time reading it!
Notes: This novel was a pleasant surprise. Mostly because the title and the summary felt like your mindless funny danmei that I usually read when my brain is in dire need of rest. Who would have thought that it would become one of the best danmei I've ever picked up. 1. MECH. BATTLES. 2. The MC and the ML are not your stereotypical two-dimension personality types. 3. This broke a lot of omegaverse tropes. 4. I never cried over mothers in danmei, mostly because they either did not exist or are the kind, nurturing types that are fully capable of building happy homes. Heck, I didn't even cry for the ones in ErHa, despite the tragedy. This one...I think I wasn't the only one who bawled over her circumstances, and rooted for her till the end. 5. Author is so very good at writing supporting characters, too.
If this ever gets picked up for English-language licensing (AND IT DOES DESERVE TO GET LICENSED), please please change that title and have someone write a better synopsis. I wouldn't have picked this up if it wasn't for a recommendation I encountered at "All Things Danmei" FB group. Include a mech illustration in the cover, too, because those mech battles are *chef's kiss*.
A very good book with a mature and non-toxic relationship. This book is omegaverse and I really liked that our 2nd MC was a strong omega who went to fight with mechas. I didn't expect from the synopsis for this to be a transmigration book where our 1st MC transmigrates into a book he read and become a cannon fodder.
