Sunnyville is perfect. It twinkles with total loveliness. Until Rhino drops a toffee wrapper!
“What? It’s only one!” he says. Soon things are messier, noisier and a WHOLE LOT grumpier!
Can anyone save the day? The perfect book to teach kids that a little care for your local environment and taking time to think of those around you, makes for a joyful world for all.
Tracey is the author of Hubble Bubble, Granny Trouble. She was born and grew up in industrial South Wales and now lives in a hidden valley in Gloucestershire with her husband, two children and an ever-increasing menagerie of devilishly-cute-but-sometimes-rather-naughty pets.
A trained teacher, Tracey has always had a passion for wonderful literature and began writing for children in 2006. Her books for other publishers include The Grunt and The Grouch series about two riotous trolls, and numerous picture books including “The Little White Owl.
Tracey’s head is happily crammed with countless ideas and stories and she’s loving the adventures that her characters insist they share…
This book address situations in which someone excuses poor behavior by arguing that it's only one. Throwing away a can, picking a flower, or singing in public. This book drives home the message with a mouse that decides to care for a flower, though it's only one. The other animals realize that we can only make a difference one at a time and that only one can matter a lot for a community.
This story has a clear message; the illustrations are best for preschool and kindergarten, though obviously this message could be useful for students and people of all ages.
I read this book to my students as part of our project on 'Our World' My students were enthusiastic when pointing out all the naughty things the animals did, we then made a collage of all the rubbish we had and could find around the school. Great starting point for SEN students really gets them thinking.
IT'S ONLY ONE is a cute picture book that shows the importance of taking personal responsibility for being considerate. Sunnyville seemed perfect, until one day, Rhino tossed a piece of trash on the ground, thinking that it was only one. However, other animals followed suit until the ground is covered in trash. Giraffe decides to look at something prettier by picking a flower from the park, thinking that was only one - of course, it wasn't. Soon all the animals are picking lots of flowers until there is none left. Penguin then decides to play a song in the park to cheer himself up, and soon all the animals are playing loud music.
Mouse is so annoyed and decides to make one small change - planting a flower. It reminds everyone of the way Sunnyville used to be. As the other animals again follow suit, they can take charge and change their town for the better.
What I loved: This book has a simple and clear message about personal responsibility and consideration. It comes across throughout the story. The repetitive nature of the text makes this a great book for young readers, and a low word to picture ratio also makes this great for young children or those who really enjoy illustrations. The pictures here are fantastic with lots of color and animals that make each page fun to look at and dive into the details.
What left me wanting more: In scenes where Sunnyville is getting more chaotic, there are scenes of animals being physically mean (for instance ones hitting the others on the head) and destructive (for instance, an animal smashing a boom box with a mallet). These add to the chaos and depiction of inconsideration, but may not be great examples for children as the message is conveyed without these inclusions.
Final verdict: IT'S ONLY ONE is a fun picture book that shows children how they can make a difference with a small act - for better or for worse. With great illustrations, this picture book conveys a clear message asking the reader to take responsibility for their actions, as it is never only one.
Please note that I received a review copy. All opinions are my own.
I was actually laughing out loud while reading this book. There is probably not a person out there that has not experienced some element of this story and can understand the importance of the message. The story takes place in a beautiful little town called “Sunnyville” filled with all kinds of friendly animals that are kind and courteous to each other and their town. This all changes one day when Rhino casually tosses a candy wrapper onto the ground. When asked why he did that, his reply is “What? It’s only one.” However, it was not only one. Pretty soon everyone in Sunnyville is tossing their trash on the ground. This careless behavior continues with other actions--Giraffe picks a flower from the public garden and then everyone picks the flowers and Penguin plays music too loud and now everyone is making too much noise. Eventually, Sunnyville becomes an awful place to live with too much trash and noise and not enough beauty. Mouse sees this as an opportunity to make a small change. Mouse plants one small flower-just one, but it does make a difference. Soon, everyone joins Mouse in cleaning up Sunnyville and making their town beautiful again. In the end, the animals have all learned a valuable lesson on what it takes to keep a neighborhood nice and enjoyable for everyone.
The last few pages of the book offer some helpful tips about being a good neighbor and respecting your town and others that live in your town. This could really be used as a teachable moment with young children (and maybe even some adults!).
I think the illustrations will also be very appealing to young children. They are bright and colorful and the characters in the story have some very expressive facial features showing the range of emotions in the story.
Doch was dann geschieht, hätte wohl niemand gedacht.
This picture book provides a gentle but relevant reminder that one person can make a difference in the world, whether it be for good or for ill. The town of Sunnyville is a pleasant place to live until Rhino tosses a candy wrapper to the ground rather than putting it in a trash can. That act might seem to be no big deal, but others follow his example. Things go from bad to worse when Giraffe plucks just one blossom from the park and Penguin decides to blast his music in the courtyard. It quickly becomes apparent that the happy little town has become a noisy, dirty, selfish place. Mouse decides to set a good example for her fellow citizens, and they realize the error of their ways and return to being more considerate of those around them. While I liked the message in this book and would use it to remind youngsters to think of others rather than behaving selfishly, I found the moves from one scene to the next a bit abrupt as the story moved from littering to taking flowers to loud music. I'm not sure how annoyance over one person's actions would result in other acts of selfishness. Some of the illustrations feature close-ups of various animals such as Mouse, and the story's pace is fast. The book contains good examples of how to behave while keeping the needs of others in mind, but I wish there had been more reasons for the selfish behaviors provided.
Sunnyville was perfect, friendly and fun. Then one day, Rhino decides to throw his candy wrapper on the ground. After all, it’s only one. But others do the same thing and soon there is an offensive trash pile. The same goes for picking flowers and playing music very loudly. Soon “Sunnyville had lost its twinkle” and all the residents are extremely grumpy. Thankfully, Mouse has an idea that everyone appreciates. She plants a flower, which reminds everyone that every little kindness helps.
I loved this sweet and thoughtful introduction to being considerate and empathetic. Things go awry when Rhino thinks it isn't a big deal when he throws one piece of litter on the ground, but soon everyone is littering, and "only one" IS a big deal.
The theme is that we all make a difference with our everyday actions--and that can be for good or bad. I also liked the tips at the book's conclusion, that encompass both respect for the environment and its creatures and respect for each other.
Personal giggle for me:this is "Sunnyville" NOT "Sunnydale," but I still thought of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and of a wise young lady long ago who said of the Purple Dinosaur Who Shall Not Be Named, "the show would be better if it had an ax murderer on it."
Very cute art, totally didactic story, complete at the end with lessons in "Let's Learn to Be Good Neighbors." Teachers and those who love the Berenstains will enjoy this.
Accessibly presented look at how every little way we damage the planet, from litter to noise pollution, adds up. Hopeful in that it counters the cumulative effect with a small step toward change. Solid explanations in the back about each kind of damage. Would tie in well with the 'Take only pictures, leave only footprints' mantra of LNT/National Parks.
This book shows readers what can happen when we don't think about anyone else, litter, and cause disruption without care. With a simple cause and effect theme, it makes for a clear lesson that even very young children would understand. A good way to help children be mindful of the world around them and how they can do their part to make their home and neighborhood a good place to be.
Littering, picking flowers, playing music--think of others before you do. I have never seen a message book of this nature which includes the latter. I get so tired of going camping or to the lake and having music blasting from vehicles and RVs! I realize some is caused by differences in culture by some participants, but oh, I long for the old quiet days!
This was a super cute story with great, busy illustrations. It is perfect for reminding people of any age that rules and customs of a civilization exist for a reason. People who believe rules only exist for other people don't realize how many other people think that same thing. I love how the community came together to fix the damage.
I really enjoyed this picture book. The illustrations are beautiful and show what each character is doing to the environment that can be harmful. I like that at the end of the book there are sections on how to be a good neighbor, how to make our park a happy place, and how to not litter.
I love this one. Set in Sunnyville, every one is happy and friendly. And then....Rhino throws a candy wrapper on the ground. That leads to everyone else in town doing the same. Good book to teach about green responsibility.
Fantastic illustrations, good story illustrating the power of example and kindness. The end pages after the story are a little didactic, but the message overall is an important one. A solid, but not outstanding, offering for story time.
Never litter on the ground and say "It's only one" because it's not going to be only one. And never pick out flowers and say "What? it's only one" because it's not. And don't put on loud music and say "What... too loud? its only one song." Because it's not.
Eräänä päivänä Onnelan asukkaat alkavat heittämään roskia maahan, poimimaan kukkia ja kuuntelemaan musiikkia liian kovalla. Kirja käsittelee hauskalla tavalla yhteisomaisuuden ongelmaa, jos kaikki toimisivat piittaamattomasti.
A book with a strong moral about how individual actions add up. Definitely has an environmental note to it. A bit cheesy, but the illustrations are cute and the message is positive.
