When an experimental starship test goes horribly wrong, a scientist from Earth finds herself fighting for her survival, and her only lifeline is a wild, powerful alien king.
Waking on an alien world, wracked by pain, Dr. Poppy Ellison is confused and adrift…until his voice calls to her in the darkness. The big, wild, enthralling man reveals that she’s been infected and is turning into an alien shapeshifter. Poppy has always been smart, practical, and boring, but with her entire life turned upside down, there is no one she can trust…except for this alien wolf.
Emperor Brodin Damar Sarkany is king of Damar and its shapeshifters. As wild as the forest city they call home, the Damari can be volatile, always fighting to control the wolf inside. Brodin uses his immense strength to keep his people in check and protect them from the most dangerous evil of all—his war-mongering father. He can’t afford the distraction of a small, tantalizing woman from Earth, even when everything about Poppy sings to the instincts of both man and wolf.
As his father’s ruthless warlord attacks, innocent children are at risk, and Poppy knows she has to help by mastering her new, emerging abilities. She must also face the shocking passion that explodes between her and Brodin. But as Poppy and Brodin hunt down the enemy, they uncover a plot that could mean the destruction of all the Damari…if they don’t stop it in time.

The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💙🖤💚❤️ Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘 World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌏 Character development: 😠😘🤓🥰 Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙 Narration Type: Dual Narration
The heroine:Dr. Poppy Ellison - she is a doctor and works for Ninotech, a large corporation on Earth that specializes in experimental space technology. She was currently working on a wormhole drive project along with her pilot friend, Mallory when something went wrong and the ship spun out of control, breaking apart. Her half of the ship crash landed separately from Mallory, on an alien planet, Poppy was found and taken to Damar when it was found they could help her more.
The Hero:Emperor Brodin Damar Sarkany - He is brother to Overlord Rhain Zhalto Sarkany from the first book. They each have their own planet that they rule over. Brodin is king of Damar, and all the shapeshifters on the planet. Like Rhain in Overlord, Brodin is at war with his father who has his own planet but is waging war on his son’s in order to try to get them to join him. Though he is a brutal tyrant, so Brodin wants none of that, like Rhain.
The Story: Poppy wakes up to a burning pain and she doesn’t know who or where she is, though she is in a bed and there are people around her talking about her “transformation”. They know that her name is Poppy and that her pain levels are about as high as they can be. She had been experimented on by a warlord sent by Brodin’s father and she was infected by Damari blood. The last thing Brodin needs is a weakness right now, so he tries to keep away from Poppy.
I love the premise of this one. The idea of waking up on an alien planet with new powers, is certainly a fun one and different than most alien romance. Though at first I didn’t really like the story, but I kept listening and it got better and better. The witch that Brodin’s father sent to wreak havoc, really was a baddy and did some horrible things. It really held my interest and I loved the suspense and action throughout the story.
This book is told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Vivienne Leheny and Stephen Dexter. Stephen Dexter is one of my favorite male narrators and has a deep husky voice and is great at portraying emotion through his voice. Vivienne Leheny has a low voice for a female and she seemed to overact a bit too much for my liking, her emotions seemed too overblown to be genuine.
Why do people like this author so much??? Seriously, I just don't see it. The world building is pathetic.
Anyways, DNF at about 20%. So not going to star it.
He's the emperor of a small village of about 20 people. ... at least that's what it felt like to me. He lives in a small cottage, with no retinue, no guards, he has a lot of spare time, etc... why not just call him a clan chief? Actually, even a clan chief would have more responsibility. Is he REEEEeeeeeeaallllly Supposed to be Emperor of an entire planet? If so, where was the rest of the planet??
The lack of follow-thru was ridiculous and impossible to ignore. Like the h, she was in excruciating pain in the hospital for days or was it weeks... anyways, she leaves when she wakes up on her own. Still in a lot of pain, but drawn to the woods she goes walkabout. She tries to fight a demon, and then the Emperor finds her. SO instead of taking her back to the hospital he takes her to the village for a snack. Then she goes to his cottage, where she's going to stay while she recovers.... At no time does he take her back to the healer to get her checked.
The storytelling is just annoyingly manipulative and asinine at the same time.
First Impressions After I read the first book, I didn’t know how Emperor could even come close to what I felt for Overlord, well guess what? Yeah, I was definitely wrong about that. The reason that I picked this one up so quickly is I just know that I can depend on this author to get me into a book, and after a slow read from the historical, I just knew that I had to read something that would be a page-turner and Anna Hackett definitely fulfilled everything that I expected and more from this one. It was everything that I was looking for and also added some elements that I didn’t realize I needed. I do think that if you want to try some great imagery in a science fiction romance, or just want to explore this genre a bit more, I couldn’t recommend Anna Hackett and especially this series has been a blast so far and I can’t wait to read the connecting books to this series. The romance was on point and so solid in so many respects and there was so much competence porn in this one that it just blended so well together.
Summary This story begins with our two protagonists are: Dr. Poppy Ellison and Emperor Brodin Damar Sarkany. Poppy wakes up in intense pain and the only thing that brings comfort is being held in the arms Brodin and in this moment there is an intense bond that is formed between Brodin and Poppy, one that neither of them fully realize at that moment. Poppy is an earth female who crash-landed on a planet across the galaxy and was experimented on and now she is part shapeshifter, and Brodin is by her side being her protector and building the courage she needs to survive the coming tide. As Poppy is learning more about her new abilities and what she is capable of, the relationship that she builds with Brodin develops into something deeper than they ever expected. But Brodin’s wolves are disappearing and when a handful of kids go missing, he is determined to find them, but their nemesis has found their weakness, and only Poppy has the capabilities to fight the change and bring balance back to their people. But they have an enemy who is determined to destroy them all. But will Poppy and Brodin find a way to defeat a crazy scientist who will stop at nothing to destroy them?
What I Loved There are so many things that I just fell so hard for. The first is the setting, the descriptions that this author builds up are so vividly portrayed and it just felt like a magical setting that I wanted to kick back and relax into. Anna Hackett definitely displayed her talents in what she built here with this setting. I had such a fun time with this clan of shape shifter wolves, it was so so fascinating. I honestly have loved the sense of paranormal mysticism that blends so well with these sci fi worlds that are pure magic on the page. When you combine that with a powerful romance, you are bound to fall in love. Which definitely happened. I adored Brodin and Poppy together, while they seem vastly different from each other, they ended up complimenting each other so well in this one. I looked forward to every moment that had together, and seeing them interact and build their relationship definitely had its powerful moments. There is also a very intense plot that builds within the story that while it doesn’t detract too much from the romance, it really adds depth to the characters that come into play here. And as a side bonus we got a teaser to the next pairing in the series and that one is going to be a firecracker.
What I Struggled With. I am not sure what I can say about this as there wasn’t really much I struggled with. If I had to pinpoint what kept this from being a full five-star of a read, it would definitely have to be some slow aspects to the story. It only happened a couple of times which is the only element to this book I could see better.
Overall View Emperor is a read that will twist you up in knots and will inspire you to fly to your imagination’s soul. It brings together beautiful aspects of heart and thrills that you will be hunting down more books from this author. Definitely won’t disappoint any romance lover.

I don't know what it is about this series, but it is ticking all of my boxes!
Dr. Poppy Ellison crashlanded on an alien planet along with her bestie, Mal in Overlord. While Mal developed energy powers and fell in love with the ruler of Zhalto, Poppy had been infected by a Damar wolf, and the transition was killing her. Her best hope was to be taken to the planet of Damar and be treated by their best and brightest. Under the protection of the Emperor, she couldn't be safer.
I loved that while Brodin wanted to make sure Poppy was alright, he couldn't help but be drawn to her. He was so protective and possessive and the fact that she returned those feelings only made this read better. I love when there's no instant denials and lies to get in the way of a must-have romance.
Poppy was a great heroine—smart, quirky, loyal and surprisingly fierce. Through Brodin, she was able to see the potential within herself. She was able to overcome her perceived shortcomings and embrace the life and love that Brodin and his world were there to offer.
And Brodin... he was absolutely yummy. I really, really loved this male. Strong, intelligent, kind, respectful, honorable... he was everything that Poppy deserved.
The plots of these books, where the father of these heroes is so desperate to have his sons by his side that he sends sinister villains to cause trouble, is very entertaining. Poppy and Brodin may have defeated the current foe this time, but everyone knows that Zavir (the evil father that didn't seem quite so evil when he appeared in this story) isn't anywhere near done.
Captain Thadd and First Claw Annora are next. They will be sent on a mission to protect the Talnians, the planet of one of the brothers. It's more than obvious that there is a lot of tension, of the sexual variety, going on between these two and I can't wait to see how it all explodes. Luckily I've already got their loaded up and it's what I'll be reading next. See you there!
I like Poppy's story more than Mallory's. Poppy was much more intelligent. She wans't stubborn to the point of stupidity like Mallory! And I appreciated it.
This review is parts rant part rebellion and fully my personal opinion .
Even though it was highly predictable and formulaic, I liked Galactic Gladiators series , at least some heroes were fun. As a result, I had certain expectation for this spin off and gave some concession to Overlord as a first book. However, I am putting breaks on with this one. To everyone who loved/liked this book – I am happy it brought you pleasure, but it appears that my personal tolerance for rinse/ repeat scenario has reached its limits. I tried to organize my reasons in a cohesive manner and came up with :" Katrina's understanding on general principals , structure and requirements of creating space opera serial based on numerous books and with specific application to Galactic Kings " - phew, my university degree thesis had shorter title ( again, please keep in mind, this is me having a rant and taking a dig not only at Galactic Kings , but at SF /Romance genre in whole. I know, I know we as readers of Hunks in Space genre really do ask for it, but just once in a while something fresh would be welcomed)
Planning - general requirements and guidelines for space opera serial:
Optional: Hair length and style, eye/skin (choose with caution : Chartreuse or Dahlia Pink are not recommended) color and “unique abilities “types. Mandatory: Huge, tall, muscled, powerful, sexy, leader warrior, hung like a horse, possessive, dresses in leather, uses swards, growls.
Earth females
Optional: Blue / brown / grey/ hazel eyes, blond/ brunette/redhead, short /tall, athletic /cuddly, physical/cerebral. Mandatory: ” Smart” – have a profession that requires high level of education such as a degree which does not reflects on thought process or actions. “Brave” – rushing in to anything head first without plan, preparation or slightest of though (not a contradiction to “smart” as it comes under:” I have to save them no matter what” umbrella, which negates any kind of stupidity)
Realization - Galactic Kings
Conflict
Fighting Galactic usurper who happens to be their father (daddy issue)
Alien males
No 1 Rhain: Overlord, Huge, tall, muscled, powerful, sexy, leader warrior, hung like a horse, dresses in leather, can control energy, uses swards that lights up (neat party trick) growls.
No 2 Brodin: Emperor, Huge, tall, muscled, powerful, sexy, leader warrior, hung like a horse, dresses in leather, uses swards turns into a werewolf (hopefully house -broken) growls.
Earth females
No 1 Mal: tall, brown eyed athletic brunette, physical pilot, brave - “I have to save Poppy”, develops super – dooper powers.
No 2 Poppy: short blue eyed blond cuddly scientist cerebral, brave - “I have to save teenagers”, develops super – dooper powers.
Adventure/Danger:
Crash-landing on alien planet/ capture by bad guys/liberated by good ones / bad guys want them dead/ back because of their super-dooper powers.
Male/Female interaction/ sex
Short distrust, mine, me protect/ sexy time (vanilla), from “Who are you” to “My one and only” in 3 heart beats.
Happy Ever After: She “Can’t go back to Earth so of course I will stay with you, you sexy alien beast with gigantic shlong – Galactic orgasms are the best and you think that I am a cherry on top even when I am being a total pip “ He “Have to constantly bleat to convince myself how lucky I am that that this beautiful/ brave/ awesome/ sexy/ smart/ brave/ smart/ sexy / beautiful woman is my mate, or she’ll have my balls because she is soooo tough and resilient and smart and brave. Must make it nauseatingly sugary)
What’s next:
Alien Male Prince/ Sultan/ Tsar/ Pasha/ Khan/Rex/Shogun
Earth female Hazel-eyed redhead, short athletic cerebral brave “I have to save space amoebas / sentient lichen”.
The rest is as previously.
P.S Insure that character’s name fit their physical description: Male names should be “ manly /gruff” and have abundance of hard consonants: B, D, G, J, R, S, T Z ( Brog, Tvorog, Zwog , Agog, nothing that sounds soft or like cough expectorant medication, e.g. Chefokus Pilmet , Memaloth or Eugene ) Earth Females - for tall/ athletic/ physical – Jan, Sam, Ann, Di, Taz. Short/ cuddly/cerebral – Dolly. Molly, Polly, Sally, Annie, -you get the idea.
This is a combo review because a) read them back to back and b) tired and it's been a long week. I liked the setup to this 'verse but I didn't realize it's more of a spin-off to another series. As a result, there's vague references to that series that might help fill in the worldbuilding a bit more. In any event, I'm kind of middle of the road on these right now because I'm not sure what's going on. It feels slightly unfocused, in that I don't know much about the Big Bad in this series, and what I do know doesn't make alot of sense.
As for the individual romances, they're also very similar. Physically the heroines are opposite, but they both struggled to belong on Earth until they get to this new 'verse. Then suddenly they're exhibiting amazing, one of kind powers (of course), and they're hooking up with the leaders of two different planets, who also happen to be half-brothers.
I don't know, I think it has potential but it's like that pretty apartment with a great view that has one chair and a lamp for decoration. It's sparsely furnished. But I'm sold on the view, just and I'm waiting for the next delivery to see if it turns into a comfy place to hang out for a long time or if I'm just going to be staring out the window at what could have been.
I am HERE for shapeshifting alien kings, my friends. HERE. Also, that cover. My heart eyes are strong. So strong.
So. Hunky shapeshifting alien Brodin and wicked smart human Poppy. He takes her to his planet to help ease her through her transition after she's held captive by the bad guys and experimented on. She's...well, she's crash-landed on an alien planet, been abducted and experimented on, and then rescued, and she's holding it together pretty well, all things considered.
It doesn't hurt that Brodin's sexy and wild and she kiiiiiinda likes that. It also doesn't hurt that she's developing abilities that are coming in very handy in the fight against Brodin's father. (Although, just to be confusing, Papa Sarkany isn't nearly the monster you'd think he'd be, all things considered.) Huh. Maybe I should say the fight against Brodin's father's warlord, instead.
Anywho. A nasty warlord with an affinity for poisons, an ability that's been lost for ages, a lot of steamy looks and even more steamy kisses, and a human woman finding her way on an alien world. Good stuff all around!
Brodin is Shifter, Alpha, Emperor and now apparently care giver ! Poppy is brilliant, often overlooked and now far from home and feeling oh so very different ! Two people who are seemingly from completely different worlds and yet so utterly perfect for each other. This fun pairing was easy to read and I actually liked that they didn't dance around their mutual attraction but allowed it to simply be part of who they were. Each has their own strength and each ( who am I kidding here because you know I mean growling Brodin ! ) has to allow the other to be all they can be. Yes Poppy is petite and a novice with weapons but she's just so brave and self sacrificing. Brodin is used to begin obeyed with no questions but I never found him arrogant or overbearing. Sadly I didn't quite get the inclusion towards the end of a supposedly evil character who behaved in an altruistic way that had me questioning where this was going. I'm left with questions about possible redemption, maybe even coercion which clearly left me dissatisfied. Everything else had me eagerly turning the pages and I think it's obvious which battling couple are up next but there's still one brother left and as I type no suitable romantic interest so it will be interesting to read what happens next. This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Another winner for Anna Hackett. I loved the characters Brodin and Poppy. Full on action, evil 🦹♀️ sinister characters who need to be defeated, you won’t put this one down til you’re finished. But, like the first book, it’s missing something that I just can’t put my finger on 🤷♀️. But this could just be me 😂
This is the second in the Galactic Kings series and starts just as the first book is ending. It tells the story of a Brodin, Emperor of Damar and Poppy, a scientist from earth who crash landed on another planet in a galaxy across the galaxy along with her best friend and pilot Mal. Poppy was captured and been experimented on and part of that was injecting her with the DNA of a Damari, a species of Wolf Shifters living on a nearby planet and ruled by Brodin. The ruler and brother of the planer asks Brodin if he can help Poppy as her body is trying to shift and can’t and Poppy is in a great deal of distress. Brodin agrees and takes her back to his Damar to help her.
So that’s the set up to the first book, overlord and now we begin Emperor. Poppy is in excruciating pain and Brodin is watching helplessly as his healers try to help Poppy as she tries to shift. He has strong feelings for this small young woman from Earth and would like nothing better to stay until she is passed it but as Emperor of his world which is under attack he can’t. His people are disappearing and he needs to find them. His father, a cruel leader of another world still wants to join with his three sons and rule the entire universe. He tried in the first book with Rhain in the first book and now he’s trying with Brodin in this one but the three brothers are united and want nothing to do with their evil father.
But Brodin and Poppy spend as much time together as possible and the more time they spend together, the more he comes to admire her. Poppy is discovering changes in herself. Although she can’t fully transform into a wolf, her senses are heightened, she has more endurance and she can run faster. She also seems to have the ability to calm the volatile Damari people. And she is falling for Brodin as he is for her.
This is a good, fun, solid adventure romance and another one by Anna Hackett I’m glad I read. Poppy is a great heroine. She starts off somewhat timid, nerdy scientific type who never really fit in anywhere, into this real kick ass woman when her new powers begin to kick in. Add that to the positive and valuable affirmation she’s getting from Brodin and it’s great to see her come into her own.
And I think Brodin makes for an excellent hero. He’s a great ruler to his people and cares for them very much. He’s a strong alpha hero, after all, he does shift into wolf form. The more he comes to care for Poppy, the more possessive he becomes and while he wants to take care of her and keep her away from the evil forces attacking his world, he acknowledges that she has the knowledge and talents and determination and growing love for his people, he welcomes her help.
I think the author has done a wonderful job in creating this world and that’s so important in a SciFi/Alien romance. The people of this world are very much like us except for different powers and that’s what I prefer honestly. I can get on board with blue skinned heroes with horns but many of the books I see others reading; spider looking heroes, kraken, bird men, lizard men, are just a tad too different for me to try. I enjoy watching how much others are loving them but I don’t think they’re for me. It’s like watching rides at fairs and carnivals. I can spend hours just watching and loving them and the people enjoying them but I’m ever so glad I don’t plan to get on. I live vicariously through others in that way (grin).
Now back to the book after going a bit off topic. If your a fan of this genre, I highly recommend this book. I don’t think it’s necessary to have read the first book, this one takes place on a different planet and the hero/heroine of that one only have brief cameos in this one. I’ve read a number of Anna Hackett books and she’s definitely on my list of authors of this genre I enjoy. You can get it free on KU.
Series: Galactic Kings #2 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
Dr. Poppy Ellison woke up alone on an alien world to find that she is turning into a shapeshifter. The more time she spends on Damar and with its Emperor, the more she realizes that she isn’t a normal shifter and that she doesn’t really want to leave.
This book picked up shortly after the previous story ended. Poppy finally wakes up and is struggling to deal with the sensory overload from being a shifter. I liked that Poppy didn’t just automatically adjust to being a shifter. She struggled and had to learn how to do certain things. I liked Poppy from the very beginning and loved that she wasn’t afraid to stand up to Brodin. She was smart, compassionate, and will make a great empress. But, I really wish we had learned more about her abilities since she is a unique shifter.
Brodin is a protective alpha wolf. He is determined to keep his people safe and carries all the burden on his massive shoulders. I liked that while he was extremely protective of Poppy he still let her be a part of their missions and help when she could. He was the perfect blend of extremely protective but willing to bend if necessary.
I found the enemy in this one very interesting since she dealt with poisons, and also because it was a female. I really enjoyed the battles and all the creatures they fought against. Also we finally get to see what their terrible father looks like and he is definitely going to be an interesting character.
Overall, this was another very enjoyable alien romance from Anna Hackett. I am really enjoying this Galactic King series and can’t wait to read the next book with Thadd.
Trigger Warnings: - Poppy was kidnapped and experimented on, which turned her into a shifter. - Poppy’s sister died in an accident when she was a child. - Brodan’s mother and stepfather were killed in a natural disaster. His baby sister died during infancy. (Briefly mentioned) - Grief.
Emperor Brodin Damar Sarkany is tasked with helping human Poppy Ellison survive the change occurring in her body after she is purposely infected with blood that turns her into a partial wolf shifter. This is a rigorous change, and Poppy is having a hard time adjusting to the pain. For some reason, Brodin makes her feel safe when she is hurting the most. He promises his brother that he will see Poppy through the change, and he is honoring that promise, but he is also drawn to her for some reason. These two brothers and a third brother rule three of the planets in a solar system comprised of five planets. One is uninhabitable and the other is ruled by their father, who seems to be power hungry and is sending horrible hordes of animals, creatures, and warlords to each planet to disrupt it and hopefully overthrow it. His ultimate aim is to have his sons by his side so he can use their power to rule the entire solar system. However, his sons are fighting against his rule and his tyranny, and fighting the invading forces that he sends to attack each planet.
This book was difficult to put down once I started it. It is tense and fast-paced. The action rarely slows down, and there is always a new challenge to face. Brodin and Poppy learn to fight together and save each other several times throughout the course of the story. They are surrounded by a good team of other fighters and they aren’t afraid to face danger and overwhelming odds. Poppy’s skills are the perfect match for Brodin’s skills. She is strong in areas where he isn’t as strong, and vice versa. They make an excellent team. This story is just so much fun to read! These characters are likeable and they face their challenges with strength and dignity. They are supportive of the others around them. It was unexpectedly delightful to have Brodin know everyone in his village. Even though he is an emperor, this detail makes him more likeable and approachable. And making Poppy so intelligent and curious makes her a very intriguing protagonist in her own way.
This is the second book in this series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but would be a better experience if readers have read Overlord first. This is a wonderful series by a very creative writer.
I enjoyed this installment in the Galactic Kings series. Poppy and Brodin's story is interesting and entertaining. I liked learning about the Damar people and seeing Poppy find a place among them. Brodin is a great hero and Poppy is a good match for him. Their romance was well done.
I look at work forward to the next book in the series.
DNF. Wished there was more tension between the MCs. There was literally no intrigue and everything was just so smooth sailing...a few chapters in and I'm bored. Sorry if I'm part of the tough crowd.
This second book is a great addition to the series. I loved the charters finding themselves drawn to each other but unwillingness my to acknowledge it almost till the end. Well done Miss Anna Hackett.
This is an awesome book! Poppy is from Earth stranded light years away. Her journey brings her Brodin. A wolf shifter who is Emperor of his planet. Such diverse characters and creative world building in this book. It's a delight to read.
