How does a Christian woman live? What does it mean to follow Jesus today? What can we practically do to lead a godly life? While her presence in the Bible is hardly substantial, the principles illustrated in the life of Mary Magdalene offer us insight and wisdom. Filled with Scripture and story, humor and gravitas, While It Was Still Dark examines the three major places we find Mary – in Christ’s life, in His death, and His resurrection – and how we can find ourselves there as well.
WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT THE It is one of my greatest joys to see women stepping out to follow their Savior, utilizing the gifts He has given them to encourage and edify the body of Christ, and Joelle is doing just that! As someone who has taught on Women of the Bible many times, it is so exciting for me to see Mary Magda-lene brought to the forefront of our hearts and minds. Hers is a story I have loved, studied, and related to intimately and Joelle does a great job of connecting Mary’s story to our own. She has a fantastic way of writing that is easy to understand and relatable to us all. This book would be beneficial for both new and seasoned followers of Christ and would be wonderful for individual or small group study. I love the Powerful call to action to be present in the life, death, and resurrection of our Savior! So needed! I encourage us all to press into that calling!—Ashley Possin, Founder of One Truth Ministries, Speaker, & Bible Teacher.
‘Beautifully disrupted’ was I as I took in this thoughtfully written account of the life of Mary Magdalene & the ordinary, yet the extraordinary way she followed Christ. While It Was Still Dark so wonderfully lays out the call to actively seek after Christ through His life, death & resurrection as a Christian woman today. Joelle, the author, captivated & drew me in as I read her candid stories, the humility she displays in her delivery, and her obvious understanding of God’s word. I would highly recommend this book to any woman today looking for clarity, encouragement, edification, or simply a challenge to search deeper with Christ on how to lean into the difficulties of life trusting in God’s greater plan. Five stars!—Shelli Deniston.
While It Was Still Dark is a beautiful gospel-soaked read. Through a retelling of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, I experienced newfound joy in the gospel and my call to follow Christ. Joelle traces the life of Mary Magdalene and other individuals from the Bible to show us what a life devoted to Christ should look like. I found myself convicted at many different points as Joelle discussed what it looks like to step out of my comfort zone and live-in joyful obedience and submission- a true challenge to our current cultural conceptions! Through both light-hearted and difficult personal stories, I found her to be honest about her own struggles while still calling fellow women to a bold faith. Joelle’s heart clear-ly pours off of these pages. Her love for Jesus and desire for all to share that love is at the foundation of this book. It would be a treasure for anyone to read it!—Grace Skelton, Pastors Wife and Stay-at-Home Momma of Four.
ABOUT THE Joélle Davidhizar is a wife, mother, speaker, and teacher from eastern Washington. Her years as a student at Moody Bible Institute and work in women’s ministry have created in her a passion for inciting a love of Scripture in women. She and her husband have three biological children and have fostered twelve others through Safe Families for Children. She enjoys reading and gardening and never turns down a maple bar.
I personally know the author and the family she lovingly speaks of in this book. Her brothers’s accident hit close to home in so many ways at our church home, our church family and for the community. As Joelle speaks in this book, she speaks of following Jesus even in the darkest moments, with joy in your heart. Her family had been on of the reasons that I try to find joy in everything. They taught me that joy could be found in the darkest day❤️
This book was opened at the very moment in my life, that I’m being “disrupted” in many ways I didn’t ask for. But the words beautiful disruption ring true in my head. Though it’s not what “I want” it is, what is to be. I trust that God knows what is before me and I will joyfully accept my charge.
This is a great read and would be a great way for a women’s group to get to know each other as the discussion ?’s are good, deep but also reflecting of what we need prayer with. A good solid read❤️
