In this funny romantic series, the Shackleford sisters descend on a Regency society that doesn’t know what’s hit it…

There was no doubt that things had definitely looked better for Gabriel Atwood, one time Viscount Northwood. Mainly because everyone who knew him or of him almost certainly believed him dead—the bastard who’d betrayed him had made sure of that.

His only hope was to seek aid from Nicholas Sinclair, his former mentor, now the current Duke of Blackmore, before his enemies realised that news of his demise had been greatly exaggerated. Unfortunately, on finally reaching the Duke’s estate late on Christmas eve, Atwood discovered the house shrouded in darkness and realised with despair that his grace had undoubtedly chosen to spend the Christmas season elsewhere.

Hope Shackleford did not relish spending the festive season under the same roof as her entire family, even though the roof beneath which the gathering was to take place belonged to the Earl of Ravenstone and was far grander than the modest vicarage in which she’d spent her whole life. Indeed, given that her two eldest sisters were married to influential members of the ton, it had to be said that her family were becoming increasingly accustomed to indulgences entirely above their station.

Hope on the other hand, despite possessing a head of flaming red hair giving indication to the contrary, was a practical young woman who eschewed both whimsy and optimism, unlike the rest of her eccentric family—in particular her father whose calling as a man of the cloth seemed in recent years to play a secondary role to his passion for meddling in affairs that in Hope’s view were entirely none of his business. Thus, the chances of their Christmas festivities being wholly focused on the simple joys of the season were, in Hope’s opinion, slim to none.

After the unexpected appearance of a vagrant who was clearly more than he seemed, Hope had no idea just how correct her misgivings would turn out to be…

Story line good.

I would have given this book 5 stars but was disgusted at the unnecessary foul language. I deducted a star with every f-word written. The other stories left this word out and still managed to receive 5 stars.

Hope is the fourth Shackleford Sister to get her romance. She is a bit more reserved than her siblings and as the current unmarried oldest has taken over teaching her siblings. She has a bit of a complex about having red hair because the boys in her village always teased her about it. She thinks her one talent is having a loud voice.
Gabriel Viscount of Northwood is supposed to be dead and is on the run. He's trying to get to his friend the Duke of Blackmore to help him and runs into the Shackelford family first. Even with his life in danger he's immediately drawn to Hope.
These books are funny and adventurous and make a good short read or listen to. The voices are on the silly side in the audiobook version.

Hope by Beverley Watts
Book Four of the Shackleford Sisters Series began similarly to the others, in Devonshire in the home of the eccentric Reverend Shackleford. It’s Christmas time, and the family will travel to Ravenstone to celebrate, the three eldest daughters married to influential matches. But Hope, whose flaming hair and big voice sets her apart from her siblings, remains behind until after her father can deliver his Christmas Day sermon. Imagine her surprise when an exhausted stranger arrives, desperately seeking the aid of one of her sisters husbands, and Hope finds herself inexplicably drawn to him.

I love regency romance and this was a fun Christmas-time audiobook to listen to. I love the narrators, and the ‘secret identity’ trope. There was definitely more ‘oomph’ to the plot than previous stories, with political intrigue and spies, as well as underhanded dealings and I appreciated the build of Hope & Gabriel’s relationship.

Probably the best in the series so far. I like that it was more of a mystery than a regency romance.

Interesting enough story. Glad these are novellas. Points removed due to the author's apparent intention to dramatically increase the number of unnecessary F-words in the text.

Silly and fun and I would like a spin off that is just the misadventures of the Reverand and Percy.

Well, this series took a significant downward slide. Hope is the fourth book in the series and by far the weakest. Prior to this installment, I was entertained by the humorous dialogue and even the silliness of the three previous stories. The characters in the first three books were fairly developed and the plot was amusing if not interesting. The language and steam were tolerable and not terribly excessive or repetitive. Then along comes this fourth installment and WHAM, it all rolls downhill quickly.

In my opinion, all the things that were good about the previous three novels of the series have gone AWOL in this novel. The entire book seemed rushed and extremely superficial. The writing was amateurish with a lot of ridiculous repeated phrases, such as: deuced, havey-cavey, and smokey business, over and over again. The storyline was not just action packed, it was action gorged. There was one fantastical episode after another. It was so overdone, it did not even create a feasible storyline. The characters were not well-developed nor consistent. The emotions are imbalanced with the plot and come off as completely riducluous, especially when the situations are somewhat macabre. The f-bomb was dropped throughout and totally out of context with the story and the time period. The sex scene was ridiculous, if not repulsive. The characters were basically described as dirty, starving, can hardly stay upright, and nearing the end; yet somehow roused themselves into a rigorous sexual encounter on the filthy floor. Yuck! Gross! Then they find their idyllic comfort in the afterglow even though they are about to be murdered. Their conversation was completely idiotic. Kissing, laughing, burping, comparisons to the family dog, and "tingles" between the legs is where the author thought it was best to take this story? Cringe-worthy. At this point I almost DNF, and seriously wish I had followed that inclination.

I listened to the audio version. In that area, it was somewhat improved from the other three. There were 5 different narrators rather than the usual 2. Sam Stafford was a newcomer to the series and could have easily handled the whole thing on his own. It was good to hear Eilidh Beaton's voice again. If the book must have more than one narrator, those are the two that performed the best. Harrie Dobby's and Ella Lynch's voices are adequate, but do not add much to the story. As always, Mark Elstob was unimpressive and at times, rather awful. He really should only do narration and not characterization.

I am going to take a break from this series and see if I can talk myself into continuing. Too bad Beverley Watts wasn't able to follow through with her original, humorous storyline and had to pollute it with current fads.

MY RATING GUIDE: 4 Stars.
Happily, I am enjoying each successive book more than the one that proceeded it. HOPE is less ridiculous yet still has plenty of light moments, action scenes and a believable mystery to unwrap. I liked it as a Light, Historical Adventure Romance Romp with a small bit of steam. I am finding this series a light diversion from mysteries and other genres.

1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/fairly good; 3.5= I enjoyed it; 4= I LIKED THIS QUITE A BIT; 5= I Loved this; it was great! (I SELDOM give 5 Stars).

Devonshire, England, Christmas 1810 ~
Lt Gabriel Atwood, Lord Northwood, in his 30’s, retired from a successful Naval career 4yrs earlier upon the sudden death of his father, the Viscount of Northwood. Yet soon after checking on the status of his various properties Gabriel’s uncle, a Naval Rear Admiral working inside England’s Intelligence network, recruits Gabriel to begin working for him in secret. On Gabriel’s 4th mission, just 1yr ago, Gabriel is set up to be killed while outside of England. The perpetrators, believing they have been successful, celebrate and announce the news of Gabriel’s demise throughout the ton. One year passes. Yet Gabriel lives and believes he knows who is guilty.

Comments ~
1) HOPE is bk4 in the 9bk Shackleford Sisters Historical/Comedy Romance series. In the beginning, the story bounces back & forth between the present day & Gabriel’s past of 1yr ago.
2) Each book in this series can be read as a Standalone story, each featuring one of Reverend Shackleford’s eight daughters with the 9th and final book, the Reverend’s only son. I prefer beginning with bk1 and reading the books in order as the older siblings and spouses from earlier books appear in peripheral roles in the books that follow.
3) In my previous reviews of bks 1-3, I remarked upon the frequent & ridiculous behavior of Mr Shackleford. His character has been the comic relief, especially in the earlier books. But the characters in HOPE are more restrained. Plenty of adventure and craziness still occurs with the story moving quickly. But I didn’t sense the utter ridiculousness that was present in the first 2 books. I found HOPE (as FAITH before this) a rather delightful, Historic Comedy.
4) Readers looking for a light palate cleanser, a Regency Comedic Romp Romance, something a bit crazy and not particularly deep might enjoy checking out this series. Books 3 and 4 (FAITH and HOPE) are my favorites.

READER CAUTIONS ~
PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used on occasion.
VIOLENCE - Think 1950’-60’s tongue-in-cheek, comic physical humor (I Love Lucy, Carol Burnett skits or Three Stooges).
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. One brief intimate scene near the end of book easily skipped over if desired.

entertaining but…

I found the characters and the story intrigue of this story one that kept me entertained and quite engaged but the romance was lackluster. By the time the two main characters have any time alone together and any real conversations they have already decided that are in love and have been kidnapped. So needless to say there was never any real getting to know each other for the two “in love” character or for the reader to get to know the two main characters either. There was so much action and nonstop things happening the reader never got a chance to flush out the unique personality’s of the MCs. Since this was primarily a regency romance that was a big blow to my rating. If this was more a regency themed mystery or spy novel I would have been better rated but as a romance it fell somewhat short. Although I did enjoy what we did get to see about Viscount, and Hope did seem to have more rational reactions than the rest of her family which was different and gave her just a little bit of individual character. I will continue to read this series but I’m about 1/2 way though and I can’t ever see it being my favorite. But it’s got good bones just slightly poor execution.

ahh.. i’ve thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series and this one was no exception. in fact, i found it even more engaging cause there was so much going on and so many familiar characters came together. seeing all the families reconnect and have such wonderful moments was heartwarming. Hope and Gabriel made a lovely couple, and while the romance wasn’t as prominent as in the previous books, the compelling plot more than made up for it. from the moment Gabriel arrived in the village, i was hooked, flipping pages as fast as i could to find out what happened next. and that plot twist at the end?.. my jaw dropped!

that being said, i do feel Henry didn’t get the punishment he truly deserved but overall, the characters were fantastic as always. a special mention to Nicholas Sinclair, the ever-reliable rescuer and of course, Mr Shackleford and Percy. they are an absolute delight. their chaotic antics never fail to make these books so entertaining. wherever there’s trouble, you can count on those two to be right in the middle of it and i love it!

5 STARS, HISTORICAL DRAMA & ROMANCE

Beverley Watts gets 5 STARS for her entertaining & exciting storyline for Book 4 in the Series: The Shackleford Sisters. Characters are good with some from previous books in the series.

Another one of Reverend Shackleford's long list of daughters is of course told of her story in this read. Gabriel Atwood, A former lieutenant of the Duke's the 1st son-in-law, who was thought dead had come to ask for his help to get his title back & someone had tried & is still trying to make sure he stays dead.

Hope had remained behind with her father this time for him to deliver the Christmas Eve at Midnight & then Christmas morning sermons before joining the entire family with the Earl & Temperance at the Earl's Estate. Gabriel simply asked the entire church a question & then passed out in the isle.

This tale of spies, intrique, war, adultery, love, laughter, & camaraderie is well written and worth one's time to read. This is Hope & Gabriel's story!

Plotting good but too steamy

The lovemaking scene was just so bad, it ruined an otherwise fun read. This has been the one major black mark in this whole series so far. And it's a shame because otherwise the family is fun, and the stories are much more complex than the usual fare in this genre nowadays.

Could also use a good edit, both for grammatical errors and for story details mixed up. At least this installment in the series had enough going on that the repetitious rehashing was much less than normal too.

Why am I even bothering to read this then? Well, the whole genre has become a wasteland of badly written, weakly plotted trope-heavy drivel. The Mary Kingswoods are few and way too far between. And I love the genre so keep searching, and a half-bad story is better than none.

Another enjoyable installment in this series. They have turned a bit more serious while still maintaining some fun dialogue. It did drag a bit in the build-up and then in the middle. I do tend to get a little confused as to who characters are when names are thrown in, like I had no idea who John was until the last couple of chapters. The depravity of the cousin and uncle were really a bit far for the series, and I wasn’t expecting how the ending resolved, it certainly seemed shocking and then outlandish. I’m still going to read the next in the series! A couple more years needs to pass here to allow for these kids to get older, it was bad enough for Hope and Faith to be 18-19 in their books, but the next oldest is 16 I believe and I need her to be older even if girls wed young 200 years ago.

Sweet Romance

Hope Shackleford was left to stay with her father while he gave him Christmas sermon, then they were traveling to Earl of Ravenstone home.
During service Gabriel Atwood comes in asking if anyone knew where the Duke of Blackmore was, and then fainted.
They tell Gabriel that he is at family members house and they will take him with them.
While traveling some riders came upon them. She puts some rogue dots on Percy after Gabriel sits up with the driver. They check the door to see who's crest is on it. Not the Duke or Northward, they check the cabin and Hope tells them he has smallpox.
Gabriel tells the Duke someone is trying to kill him. Suspense, intrigue and love along the way

As I try reading through this series, because I enjoyed the first and I want to see what happen to the sisters, they seem to get worse.
Firstly, this book now has people using the term varmint! ALL. THE. TIME!

Now, I know it is a term used occasionally since the 1500’s in the UK, but it is now a word mostly associated with America and it certainly did not seem to fit in at all with the style of writing, especially as she had different walks of society keep using it. It was grunge worthy.

Moreover, her novels now seem to be an excuse for some written sex scenes with a story attached.
Gentleman in Regency times, actual gentlemen, might have had baser moments where they went against all their morals to de-flower a Virgin, but four books in a row?! Ah, no.

Although the books in the series all have the basic plot, each is different due to the personality and quirks of the particular girl. Hope doesn't disappoint as she seeks her true love. Gabriel comes to Blackmore to see Nicholas to persuade him to help him clear his name with the Navy. He was accused of stealing from a captured ship and killing a fellow shipmate at the same time. However, before he could be tried, he jumped ship and was thought to have died trying to swim to shore. If he can prove this, he can reclaim his inheritance. Until then, he has to rely on friends and acquaintances for room and board. There is an immediate connection between Hope and Gabriel when they first meet. She and her family get involved in trying to help Gabriel get his inheritance.

The fourth book in Beverley Watts Shackleford series was another good read, albeit a bit different. There was really no back and forth, get into trouble, get out of trouble. It was more of a bad situation that took all the brothers-in-law (so far) to resolve, and, of course, Grace! It was still a page-turner, but practical Hope did nothing to cause any of the awful situations she found herself. Her strength as the heroine came from her character, standing by her resolve until the end. As much as she chastised Temperance for being wanton, she found understanding when love is involved. Without giving any more away, there is a twist at the end and the good guys turn out to be the good guys for the most part, and as always in a good HEA, the villains get their comeuppance.

This is book 4 of the Shackleford series set in old time England, think Bridgertons.
Hope is the twin daughter of Augustus the local preacher and is very sensible in this madcap family where mishaps and daily adventures are normal.
She decides to stay with her parents and attend Christmas services and witnesses a shabby stranger entering her father’s chapel.
She soon realizes he is more than a homeless, hungry beggar who is looking for her brother in law, Nicholas Sinclair. Handsome and well spoken Gabriel Atwood who is thought to be dead needs to reclaim his title of Viscount Northwood.
His uncle and mentor, Benjamin Atwood and his son Henry have assumed the title and riches.
A robbery, kidnapping and threats lead to a fun adventure story with a few surprises.

The series gets better and better,

I am really enjoying this series. Each book offers more surprises as the series grows. This is the story of Hope the second of the oldest twin. Considered least likely to wed of the older girls. A stranger appears in the village looking for Nicholas and that sets the stage for an active story with enough mystery on the side to keep you turning the pages. I really like how we get to revisit the previous couple within the series, it makes you feel a part of a loud and loving family, kind of. I am looking forward to the next book. Enjoy!

She’s given him Hope

I loved Hope and Gabriel’s story. Gabriel is a Viscount who has been on several missions for his uncle after he left the Royal Navy. Hope is a Vicars daughter with no talent except she can yell extremely loud!
When asked to go on a mission with no information he realizes to late that he’s not meant to return. When Gabriel’s cousin tries to kill him a second time he will do all he can to survive.
When Gabriel and Hope meet it’s like looking and feeling your other half and he will do anything to keep Hope alive.
A wonderful story with a beautiful ending.

I have now read 4 of Beverly Watts Shackleford Sisters series and find them well written and very funny. The only thing I do not like about them is she ends them without giving the reader more information on how the hero and heroine get together. You know they are going to she lets you know that but then she abruptly ends the book leaving the reader feel like something is not finished. It won’t stop me from reading the rest of the series, I’ve already started on the next in the series. I just know I’m going to be left wanting at the end.

This book got "only" 4* because of the tedious time-jumps, and a few scenes when our couple kisses after the hero got a lot of brandy (an idea of kissing my man the morning after two bottles of brandy gives me a shudder!!!!!) and the scene of passion after days of sweating, dirtying and hunger (despite of all my imagination I couldn't just picture it!) was not at all relatable. And yet I enjoyed it, and I am promptly downloading next book in the series!

The fourth of the Shackleford Sisters sees Hope caught up with a Viscount... These Sisters seem to go for the big boys (one has a Duke, the second an Earl and the third a wealthy Sea Captain 😄), but this like all of their stories isn't just a cute period romance... This sister has a loud voice and isn't afraid to use it!!!
Whilst I maintain the fact that this series would make an amazing romcom TV series, I cannot wait to see what Patience has to look forward to next...

Audiobook- This is number four in the Shackelford sisters series books. I’ve read numbers 2,3 and 4 and enjoyed this story the most. The narration is the best of the three with different actors and better voices. The story is more developed, more romantic and more likable than in the other two books. These novels would make a great tv series of romcom adventures. I’m looking forward to reading the other stories in the series.

I so enjoyed this humorous book following the antics of the Shackelford sisters and their detective wanna be Reverend father, Augustus, as well as the romances/ husbands of some of the sisters. This adventurous story in this series of books paired Hope with Gabriel as they fought for their lives! I look forward to reading all the Shackelford Sisters books! I love the various British phrases used in this book.. so funny!

Heartfelt & hilarious

The entire series is one of the best rim-coms I have had the pleasure of reading. I truly believe each book would make a delightfully wonderful movie. Beverley Watts truly has a wonderful wit and imagination for writing. I can’t wait to read the next adventure in the Shafkleford Sista saga. What will the reverend do next?

Hope

After being chased over half the country, Gabriel collapse in the vicarage on Christmas eve half starved, weak from cold and injuries, he hopes someone will help him.
Hope is there too help in anyway she can even if she does not know who this man is.
Good story and characters even if one of them is Hope's father.
