“Welcome to Sinful House, a reality TV show where the 7 Deadly Sins live together in the sunny beach town of Odyssey, California, and compete to become America’s Favorite Sin!”

...That’s the marketing hook that starts each episode. And like most "reality" TV, it’s complete BS. We aren’t the 7 Deadly Sins. We’re just seven misfits who happen to have extraordinary abilities along with our emotional baggage.

Take me, for instance. I'm your friendly neighborhood ghost whisperer, wrought with anxiety and social dysfunction.

The network cast me as Pride. Now, I'm competing against Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust in a high-stakes competition to win our heart’s ultimate desire.

In theory, the show's premise is simple: Solve petty crimes and win over the viewers.

But then I stumbled onto that body.

It's not my job to solve this murder. But viewers love a hero, and I want their votes. So I'll channel my inner Sherlock Holmes and unravel this mystery.

Life’s no beach in Odyssey, and nothing is what it seems. But one thing’s for sure: This will make for great TV.

Veronica Mars meets Supernatural meets The Real World in this fun, quirky paranormal mystery adventure.

Sin & Bear It
Sinful House Mysteries, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: An ad on Facebook.

Media Type: eBook
Source: KindleUnlimited
Dates Read: 7/6/23 - 7/25/23
Stars: 2
Narrator(s):

The Characters:

Sidney “Pride” Sheridan :
:
Lust, Sloth, Greed, Wrath, Gluttony, Envy,

The Story:

Writing: It was okay. It did not draw me in. The promise of the payoff from the mystery is what kept me involved and even that didn’t seem like it would be enough sometimes. There were some things that felt super unnecessary, like the birds in the mom’s room, and somethings that needed more, like a physical description of the main character.
Forward Motion: Kinda slow or I’m impatient.
Overall Interest: Not great. Lack of character connection is the number one reason I won’t pick up a book and that is what happened here.
Length of Reading Time: Fair.
Re-read-ability: Absolutely not.

Amazing Cozy Mystery With a Unique Twist!

I read a lot of Cozy Mystery. After years of reading this genre the same cliche story of a middle-aged woman becoming an amateur sleuth and opening up a bakery gets really old.

This!!! Was not that type of cozy mystery. The premise of the book was very intriguing, basing it off reality TV, in a compelling setting, with fantastic world building.

The MC was completely unique. I would peg him as having ASD even though it's never stated outright. Fisher writes Pride in a way that is unique yet relatable even if you don't have ASD or know anyone with it.

Each character was well developed and left me wanting more. I sort of figured out the mystery about half way in, but didn't care because it was more about wanting to know what Pride was going to do with the information and how he'd handle it. I loved the unique angle the story had.

Overall, if I could give this book ten stars out of five I would. It's a shame to see this book isn't getting as much traction or publicity as it should. I hope my review will help others want to read this! You won't be disappointed.

Which is your favorite sin?

Individuals who strongly exhibit traits of the Seven Deadly Sins; Pride, Lust, Sloth, Wrath, Gluttony, Greed and Envy (one person per sin) and who also each happen to have a paranormal ability, are brought together as housemates for a reality show.
Each episode pairs sins into new teams. Each team is given a mystery to solve. Solving both normal and paranormal pieces of each challenge forces the sins on a team to figure out how to work together.
The story looks at how people develop "sinful" types of temperaments, and how societal and personal prejudice and judgement of people with those traits can affect them. All put together into a fun and satisfying read.
I am off to start Book 2!

Different

This book was a bit like Big Brother. The contestants were all a bit weird though, in a supernatural sort of way, they were given names of the seven deadly sins. Pride is one of the main characters he can talk to ghosts. In this book he is paired up with Lust who is a Siren. They have to solve a mystery in a Chinese resteraunt and of course there is a murder. Even though this book wasn't my usual type to read I did actually enjoy it and will read the rest of the series.

This is the most original story I’ve ever read and still my favorite book series. This book is a really strong opening for the series, the cast is unique and fun, the MC is wonderfully lovable while being just the right amount frustrating, and it definitely sets up the mood for how the story goes later on, making you want to read the rest of the books as soon as you’re done reading the last word of this one.

This was a really fun read! It plays out exactly how you would picture a reality show of this caliber to be like. The main character is grounded enough to help us know the more eccentric house mates, with a quirk of their own that helps them fit in. The twists and turns to the challenge turned full-blown crime investigation also kept me on the edge of my seat!

An interesting premise!

Sin and Bear it started slow but definitely picked up.

It was so refreshing to see a mystery done from a original point of view.

I'm still don't understand why Pride was labeled as "Pride", as the other sins definitely embodied their labels. Maybe we'll find out more as the series go's on?!?

If you're looking for a mystery with interesting characters that doesn't follow the cookie cutter mystery.
You'll definitely enjoy this!

Loved it!

Amber Fisher is a great writer that creates characters you want to invest time in knowing. I wasn't sure how well the reality show theme would come across in a book but I was definitely pleasantly surprised. Looking forward to the next one!

Fun read

What a fun read. The author did a nice job and I'm looking forward to the next book. The characters each have their own well developed idiosyncratic personalities. Highly recommend.

Good fun

The reason I selected this book to read was because it's about a reality TV show with each character representing on of the deadly sins. Sounded like fun and it is! It's a good book.
