Rate this book

Beautiful and heartbreaking. The story of Yves Saint Laurent has captivated my imagination for the past few years, and this past April I was lucky enough to visit the Musée Yves Saint Laurent in Paris. After floating through that absolute fucking dream of a museum, I picked up this slim volume in the gift shop.

These are the letters that Pierre - Yves's partner in life and in business - wrote to Yves after his death. From sharing the process of auctioning off their massive art collection in the present to recounting times both bright and dark in the past, it's an intimate look at a cultural giant through the mind of the person who knew him best.

"Some people are paranoid, others claustrophobic; we were collectors." p. 30

"I know you wanted this misfortune. It took me some time to admit it. One day I understood that you wished, more than anything else, to play with the devil." p. 36

"Truth only belongs to those who know it, others have the right to one they've invented." p. 46

"How many times did you complain about being lonely? But it's not the wind that carried off your friends, it is you who brushed them away. You refused to see them. You would tell me you loved them, but just couldn't do it." p. 71

"I've often wondered if you're aware that your greatest achievement is to have transcended an aesthetic field and had an impact on society. If indeed, as they say, Chanel gave women their liberty, then you gave them power. You clearly understood that power was held by men, and that by dressing women in men's clothing, you were empowering them. That's what you accomplished: le smoking, the safari jacket, the trouser suit, the peacoat, the trench coat are proof of this. Not the slightest trace of androgyny. Each to their own. Dressed this way, women nurtured their femininity, exuding an unsettling eroticism." p. 74-75

"Like those extinct stars that keep shining, Yves Saint Laurent illuminates us." p. 100

Broke my heart in all the right ways! Pierre writes to Yves in the time after his passing, as a way to continue the conversation with his life partner of 50 years but also as a testament of their love. Time to write more letters to those we love

Beautiful but devastating (love) letters written during the first year after Yves's death. I really appreciate how real and honest these letters were, Pierre didn't romanticize Yves as a person or their 50 years together, every letter was just raw and heartbreaking reflection into the past.

"This role, I know, was made for me.
And your role was written for you. You had decided to be death's lover."

The read was succinct, insightful and intimate, but I wonder if YSL would have liked some of his personal life divulged as Pierre did. Some of the pages were homo-erotic, drug related, and matter of fact. However, they led a fascinating life: one of artistic license, travel, and had interesting socials, mixing it with the celebrated. Visiting their memorial in Marrakech added gravitas and a connection.

Te listy były cudowne, wzruszające i pełne uczuć.

A lot to love. Berge's account of coping with grief and feeling as though everything reminds you of the past is described through pointed metaphors that never feel fake or forced—though writing in French almost ensures that, I think. This is ultimately a private correspondence, so I can't harp too much on some of Berge's particular opinions on expressions of homosexuality or the notes of orientalism that are found in his descriptions of Marrakech lovers. The only other letter collection I've attempted is Letters to Vera by Nabokov and those are very pretty to read but someone didn't engross me as much as these. This is partially a reflection of the curation, and Berge's own writing style, and the universal appeal of 60s Paris and the rise of some of the greatest fashion houses to date.

TAGLINE: "If only these people knew that sex was the real driving force, and not art! It was sex, and my forcing you to discover it, that was the motor for: our love, our fashion house, our collection, our lives! Sex triggered our first meeting, sex reconciled us when necessary, and it's remembrance of sex which we so often evoked and united us till the end"

Reading Pierre's letters to Yves felt like an intrusion in an incredibly intimate space. Very similar to the experience of visiting Dali & Gala's house in Cadaques. Like sneaking in through the back door and being nervous for being caught in the act.
