A gritty, gripping story filled with heart-pounding moments, raw, realistic characters, and a fascinating world. I loved how everything felt so unique and immersive all at once. Looking forward to the sequel!

How shall I fear that from which I'm protected by Heaven's wings?

Um. That was incredible.

Which is completely unsurprising, Claire is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

I was instantly intrigued by the pitch of this book, and the vibes? were so immaculate? I felt like I was in a dry and dusty desert setting from the first page, and the descriptions from then on were just perfect. I have zero idea how a motorcycle works, but I could totally picture every riding scene without trouble. A+ on the writing style.

The characters also captured my heart instantly and I cannot wait to see more of them in the sequel. (which I need like... now please) ((also I totally called one of the twists towards the end and it made me so happy I loved it))

Overall this was such a fantastic read that I can't recommend highly enough for fans of unique fantasy worlds, well-developed characters, and fast-paced plots. Five stars from me!

Content warning for violence, language (it's on the milder side, but it's still present), and mentions of sexual abuse

What a delicious romp through the desert!

I had a chance to go out West and see the wilderness this past summer, and it was GLORIOUS. This book gave me all the emotions I felt when I saw the Grand Canyon (which is a lot.) It doesn't quite fit into my top favorites category, but it was SO good. I haven't read a book in a while that stood out this much to me.

Update: haven’t been able to stop thinking about this one so it’s on my favorites of the year now hahaha

"How shall I fear that from which I am protected by Heaven’s wings?"

*collapses onto floor* Phew..We made it!!! What a ride! *checks blood pressure* Yep, that's not coming down anytime soon. XD

-I'm embarrassed to say..I didn't see that twist coming. *shakes head at self disapprovingly*

-My favorite side characters are alive and kicking [for now😶😑], so I am a happy camper!...well..a slightly... stressed..happy..camper.

-An Enjoyable ride overall! I think my only complaint is that the middle of the first half[does that even make sense?] dragged a bit for me-maybe I'm just impatient-, but it picked back up real quick at the 50% mark!😬

Content: PG:13
Language[not a whole ton, but enough]
And..Err, some obscene hand gestures? XD
Suggestives/innuendos - very very mild/brief mentions of the warlord taking women to his tower. The author does a good job getting her point across without being crass or descriptive, so no worries there.
Romance: barely there-unless you count holding hands and gazing at each other longingly...
Actual there is a kiss, but it's not really.. romantic..more combative actually[I'm probably not making sense again.🤡]
Violence: -You know I'm here for it! Haha! Jk ;P There is certainly violence, though it's relatively mild for the most part...except for the executions, I suppose.
**forgot to add*--there are mentions of substance use**

“Strange how he thought he had nothing until he stood to lose something.” -Then Comes a Drifter

This review is just me gushing about this book and I’m not even sorry.

I LOVE this book/duology (*dies waiting for book two to actually be published*). It’s carved a place into my heart and camped out there. There’s a scene that almost made me cry.

The world Banschbach has created is gritty, vivid, fascinating, and so well-developed. The plot pulls you along with intensity and action, interspersed with humor and heart. And all of the characters, MCs, secondary characters, and minor characters, are even more raw, real, and vivid than the world.

Laramie is one of my favorite spitfire female characters, so much fun, and her stubborn, hopeful determination is inspiring.

Banschbach is the queen of found family/close friendship vibes. Gered, Dayo, Gioia, Laramie, and even Axel, and their interactions and the moments of humor and bonding just fill my found family trope-loving heart.

My all-time favorite character archetype is the tortured hero fighting a battle between darkness and light, who is a bit morally gray due to circumstances but has a good heart, and I’ll be surprised if I ever find an example of that archetype that is better or that I like more than Gered. He has my whole heart.

I also love that this book has a male and female MC and it's about a growing platonic friendship! (Some minor romantic subplots, but not between the two MCs.) It's so well-done and I love it.

There's also a twist at one point that is just SO good.

This book kinda ends with just seeds of hope. There’s a lot of darkness and suffering and doubt, with moments of goodness and light poking through like stars in a night sky, and maybe some hints of more like the first lightening of the sky before dawn. The next book is really where hope and redemption and healing are grappled with, but you’re just gonna have to wait for that. (I had the pleasure of being an early reader. 😉) But TCaD is still so good, and I highly recommend you pick it up ASAP!

If you’re wary of cliffhangers, this one has a soft one, but more of a “plot A is finished, plot B has been opened” feel, if that makes sense. No “what will happen in the next five minutes” type of cliffhanger.

Disclaimer (which I nearly forgot about entirely, oops): I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for purposes of honest review, and these opinions are entirely my own. Also I ordered a paperback because I love it so much.

Content note: Some PG-13 level profanity and gestures, blood, a lot of violence
Trigger warnings: Lots of death, references to physical abuse/torture, implied references to/threat of r*pe, alcoholism, and drug use.

I don't rate and/or review my books normally. Instead I'll use this space for updates or to give some extra info about the book.

Author review/note:
If you've come here from some of my other works, expect something a little grittier, a little rougher than the others. But still filled with action, adventure, hope in the darkness, choices made when evil looms large, and perseverance to the end. As far as actual content rating, I give this one a hard PG-13 rating. Some mild language (what you'd hear in a marvel movie), some rude gestures, mentions of drinking and drug use (not framed positively), gang life, mentions of physical and s*xual abuse in some characters pasts, and violent bad guys.

But in these pages there's a story of found family, discovering strength when backed against a wall, showing someone there's a better life, fighting for the weak, and a young man finally looking up to see a helping hand extended to pull himself out of the darkness. It's mistakes and choices and being brave. And always having hope.

Oh my word this book was AMAZING! Seriously, I don’t think Claire can write a bad story and this one is no exception. Found family, motorcycle escapades, desert fantasy vibes, tyrant overlord—it was all amazing. She has the ability to create a world that sinks into you and holds on long after the final page is turned.

Plus, her characters? *sequels uncontrollably* honestly I love every character of hers I’ve ever read, but these ones...raw, gritty, pain filled humans that just spoke to my heart. Some of them covered their hurt with humor, some with a mask, some with subtle kindness. But the hurt was there and honestly I just wanted to give them hugs.

Content warning: mild language, the hint that one charcater was raped, detailed blood and other injuries.

Absolutely loved this book!!! Banschbach outdid herself with this one. I haven't binged a book so hard in a long time. The story, the world-building, the characters!!! I am mentally in this book still and probably will be for the next few weeks. Can't wait for book two! Thank you for this gift of a book, kamé.

“They teach you to fight, too?”
She nodded. “In case I ran into any psychotic wannabe warlords.”
Rosche curled a lip in a smile. “I like you.”
“Wish it was mutual.”

Thanks Uncommon Universes Press for the arc! Sorry that my (honest ;) ) review is coming a day or so late!

The first in the duo-logy, Then Comes a Drifter whirls us through an adventure of dust, gangs, fear and perseverance. This wasn't a light hearted book. Foul language (though it felt natural and not just yeeted in there), flipping the finger, violence, drinking and threats for (and past) events of powerless woman stuck with evil men. The story was dark, but Laramie drove her motorcycle through the darkness demanding that hope isn't lost.

Laramie is an amazing character. As a talkative extrovert myself reading about Laramie made me happy. She's a role model. She talks a lot, is sarcastic, has emotions but make rational choices. She can fend for herself, but she doesn't want to be alone. She's kind, brave, funny and epic.
In this book, I think she had a flat character arc with Gered having a positive character arc.

Gered, I would fight everyone who goes after him, had as much or more page time than Laramie, making me think that he was actually the protagonist of the book. But I think the two shared the role well.

The other characters:
“Someone attacked you?” He sounded unreasonably excited.
“Yeah, kid. I almost got blown up. It was great.”
Axel, Dayo, Gioia etc. had vivid personalities and were enjoyable and fun!

The world's worldbuilding and western-like + fading magic vibes was fabulous. The characters pasts 'ghosts/wounds/fears" were shown well. One emotional scene had be staring at the screen in shock, almost crying. The tech (lightening canister thing) for the motorcycle was cool too!

I'm excited for the next book!! I can't wait to see what happens!

This book is so unique. I recommend it based on that quality alone. Banschbach crafts a plot and world that feel so different from anything else I've ever read. I may need to reread this one before I know how I feel. It's just not fully clicking the first time through, but I think it's a me thing.

[ARC Review]

A clean, low-fantasy dystopian with gang and bikers, vast deserts and lost family. Although some of the MC's are a little older I believe, I would still class this as an older YA/NA story.

Favourites
- MMC: I started out really loving the FMC at the start of the story, but as it continued I lost my connection to her unfortunately. I did, however, feel strongly invested in the MMC. So flawed, secretly so passionate, and with so much pain. I'm a bit of a sadist, I suppose, so I loved it.
- World building: though we don't get a ton of magic and we don't see a whole lot from this world yet, the hints are enough and the description beautiful so that I'm eager to learn more. About the different peoples living in it, the magic that is mostly not working anymore, and what else there is to see besides these deserts the author describes so vividly.
- Themes: yes. No spoilers, but yes. The deeper questions the story asks us, and the characters worked for me.

What I missed:
- Surprising twist: the big reveal that the entire story leads up to, was clear as daylight to me from the start, which is alright and doesn't ruin a story necessarily, but it would have been cool if there'd been an actual surprise alongside it somewhere.
- the FEELS: this is a very, very well written story. There isn't anything in it that i specifically didn't like or any actual problems that I could name. But for me it lacked one thing. It didn't make me feel a lot, except here and there following the MMC. I think part of this is because the FMC doesn't seem to experience some of the tension, fear or danger that I as a reader was told was there. I didn't feel immersed into the danger because she seemed unnaturally cool about it at times.

Sexual content: none, except for a few hints at rape
Coarse language: none
Violence and gore: moderate violence, no gore
Other: alcohol and drug abuse, not necessarily glorified but it is on screen,
This is a very clean read, and although not suitable for very young readers, I wouldn't have any issues with any 13+ year olds reading it.

Conclusion
Although I missed those 'feels', this was a VERY good story and the author shows a lot of promise. I'm excited to read the sequel! If you like badass characters with moral dilemma's in a dystopian world, living among bikers, this needs to be on your reading list.

A gritty, intense ride of a book with flawed characters, found family, debilitating past trauma, and lots of hope. Gioia was my favorite character (unsurprising since her story dealt with sexual abuse) and I look forward to learning more of her story in the next book.

All My Favorite Tropes

I picked this book up because I'm basically writing the Sci-fi equivalent and it sounded too close to pass over. But I'd seen it around for a while.
It's a great story that leans heavily on its characters and relationships. The setting is unique for a fantasy, while still being familiar enough to give you an idea of what to imagine without too much description.
I did wish for a little bit more of a plot. The character goals are simple and the story doesn't lean into them until well over half way, but the character work and tension more than make up for it.
I'm going to pick up the second book and start reading right away.

First off, a big thank you to the publisher for a complimentary review copy of this book. My honest review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

Oof… where to start. I hate to be the dissenting voice on a book I know will be raved about in my circles, but I did promise to be honest. Let me first say that if you love this book, ignore my review as it will not be helpful for you. And also I’d like to mention that I do respect this author and have thoroughly enjoyed her other works.

Characters:
I have a really hard time getting into a book where I dislike the characters. And in this case, the two main characters were unlikable to the point where I could not root for them. Gered was my least favorite type of male character—the dark, broody, angry all the time jerk. I realize a lot of that was supposed to be his front that he put up to protect himself, but it was so pervasive that it made his attempts at having more tender moments unconvincing. Laramie was your typical “strong female character”… and someday I hope to live in a world where that means something more than a girl who smirks a lot, speaks nothing but sarcasm, and punches stuff. Alas, today is not that day. Both Gered and Laramie constantly committed one of my personal unforgivable sins in fiction: making objectively stupid decisions to further the plot (or add drama to it.)

Grit:
This is more of a personal issue, but it’s worth mentioning… I did not like the mood of the book at all. It was like watching Mad Max: Fury Road on repeat (for those of you who don’t know me, that’s a contender for my least favorite movie of all time.) There is nothing noble or good or praiseworthy in this book. Maybe I just don’t know dystopian well enough, but if this book is a representation of the genre, count me out. Everything is dark and dismal, all the good guys are bad people, and the descriptions are nothing but miserable hopeless wastelands, bad smells, sneering villains, cheap beer, grime, grit, and blood. Yikes. I get that the barracks were supposed to be a miserable place and Rosche was supposed to be the epitome of everything evil and vile, but like, I felt dirty reading this book. There is no reprieve, so if you start reading, prepare to be in the dumps the entire way through.

Language:
Really surprised and disappointed by the amount of coarse language from this author. There was plenty of real-world swearing (not mild or euphemisms but like actual swear words), dozens of rude hand gestures, and about half a million instances of “fake swearing” (i.e. a stand-in word: “dust/dusted/dusting/duster” but we all know what it actually is supposed to mean, now don’t we.) Also lots of coarse sexual references, some more graphic than others (which granted, were all made in reference to the bad guy but that didn’t make me okay with reading them.) This content alone would’ve made me ditch the book under regular circumstances, but since it was an ARC I felt responsible for finishing it.

Worldbuilding/magic/religion:
This is probably the most minor of my quibbles with this story but I’ll mention it here as an aside— I thought the world left a lot to be desired. The god/gods seemed like an afterthought to the story, and didn’t really come into the plot except to mention that our gritty heroine carries a well worn prayer book (but if you’re thinking that makes this story in any way Christian, think again.) Magic was present but minor and ill-defined, to the point where any time it was mentioned I was a little thrown off because it seemed so out of place in the story. Also at the beginning it seemed like the Itan were supposed to be the magical race but as the plot progressed it was revealed that travelers also had magic but it was different? And the Tlengin had magic too but for some reason they decided to wipe out the Itan, but nobody else? Idk, it was confusing.

Two stars instead of one because Banschbach’s writing is well-constructed and she knows how to paint a vivid picture with her descriptions. I didn’t like the picture she painted, but she does write well.

All in all, this is a solid “can’t recommend” from me, and I won’t be joining along for book 2 when it releases.

Banschbach's books are restoring my love for actually reading a book versus relying completely on audibooks.

I'm not sure how to classify Then Comes a Drifter. Westernpunk? Motorcyclepunk? It's a mashup of fantasy, dystopian, and western. Whatever you want to call it, it is oddly refreshing to read a story that doesn't seem to fit neatly into an established genre.

I've seen other readers reference, in delight, Banschbach's knack for writing found family and "bromances." I'm equally delighted. She dusts in more typical subplots of romance, but her forte seems to be developing deep, non-romantic relationships between her characters, and I love it.

Summary:
Laramie has been drifting, looking for survivors of her people group, when she takes a risk that doesn't pay off. Caught in the forbidden territory of a menacing warlord, she has two options: adjust to her new life of being one of his soldiers or die. Laramie is determined to create a third option out of sheer will-power. When she begins to recognize the goodness of some of the people in the unit she's been asigned to, she grows even more angry at the way the warlord crushes hope out of those who come under his thumb. Can she carve a way out for herself and her new friends, or will she persuade others to leap to their doom alongside her?

Trigger Warnings: physical abuse and non-graphic SA

Language: Some mild language and reference to rude gestures throughout.
Romance: The actual romance in very understated, sweet, and non-physical.
Violence: The warlord in the story rules through an abusive combination of knowing and recognizing personal details of his minions, and holding the constant threat of pain and death over their heads. He is known for taking women for himself, and one of the women in Laramie's unit suffered such a fate before becoming part of the units. The threat of similar treatment hangs over Laramie's head and comes close to actualization at one point. Gered suffers flashback's to his traumatic upbringing as a child soldier (though it's not described as such).
Religion: Laramie and Gered both think about Jaan, who seems to be an equivalent to a saint. Religious texts are mentioned.

I couldn't finish this book. It is too unlike what I enjoy, despite being by an author I love. The plot dragged, having me flip to the ending because I was so done with the constant cycle of bar fights, motorcycle rides, killing rebels, flipping each other off, and plotting to leave without actually leaving. That being said, I really loved the characters (Gered and Laramie were great!). I just didn't like the plot or setting (apocalyptic/western/steampunk). This just goes to show I probably shouldn't have volunteered to read this book in the first place (sorry about that, Uncommon Universes Press). This book genre isn't my cup of tea, and I've learned a lesson about volunteering to read something out of my comfort zone.
You'll probably like this book if you like Sons of Anarchy, motorcycles, old westerns, and a sprinkle of magic. As for me, I realized I should stick to fantasy, adventure, and romance.

I was provided with a complimentary copy thanks to the publisher for my honest review.
WARNING: Possible Spoilers!

THE BASICS
First of all, this book was a WILD RIDE. I could hardly put it down! The story, the world-building, the characters, the backgrounds---loved it all! I was kept on my toes the whole way through. I will add, however, due to some mature content in regards to language & violence, I would recommend caution in young readers. More details below.

All told, despite the unexpected foulness of language, I SO enjoyed this novel. And while this is the first book of a duology, I felt satisfied in the resolution of the ending, AND still more than ready for the next book!!

VIOLENCE
In order to have the best chance of surviving capture, a girl challenges a burly gang leader to a fist fight. It's very brief, and she holds her own enough to impress him... Some punches & breath-snatching blows.

Ring fights amongst gang members---basically for entertainment. Bare-knuckle fights in the arena. A serious challenge to take a leadership position leaves a man unconscious with a broken wrist.

A man is shot in the head---cold blood. A shootout takes place in the streets of a town; men are shot in the head & chest; a man is ambushed & takes a bullet in the chest (he's wearing an armored vest), and is then attacked & punched in the head. A bomb explodes, killing at least three people.

Two thugs attack a girl in an alley because she beat them [fairly] in the motor races the night before. (They lost money in the bets & decide to ambush her as an easy target.) They pistol-whip her, but she manages to get some punches of her own in & knock out at least one guy before she herself blacks out; bruisings, swollen eyes, & blood.

In another shootout in a different town, people fall to flying bullets & some are executed in cold blood for the little uprising.

Gunfight during a motorcycle race: bullets knick arms; a cycle crash leaves a man badly scraped. An injured man is beaten & kicked by multiple people---barely left alive, and strung up by his wrists as punishment for his rebellion. We're told those who try to run from the gangs' "membership" are shot by sniper's bullet.

SPIRITUAL CONTENT
A character mutters a prayer to a "Jaan" for luck---we later learn that Jaan, or John, is a being known as one of the four "messengers of God, who took the form of an eagle; John's Path, a cosmic phenomenon, appears like a comet, or cluster of stars, streaking across the sky. Matteo/Maatu is the winged patron of the Itan people.

A phrase is referenced several times: "How shall I fear that which I'm protected by Heaven's wings?"

A worn prayer book is found in a girl's bag & tossed aside in a raid of her possessions.

LANGUAGE // ALCOHOL & DRUGS
The phrase "shift off" is used numerous times---especially seeing as the majority of the characters use or are associated with motorbikes. "Pissed" [someone off] is used at least once, as well as "a--," "a--holes," "d---," and "hell." Other slang such as "for dust's sake" (it's a desert setting); and uses of "that dusting this, or that dusting ____," among phrases like "dusting hells," "Jaan's Wings!", or simply "dust" itself is in place of more foul words & phrases. There are three uses of the word, "b----," and one use of "whore."

Multiple uses of the middle finger in a variety of different scenes/scenarios.

//

We observe a room full of alcohol at the gang's headquarters. A character is known for always having multiple beers, and teased about it. People get drunk & stumble into others or things. Some gambling & bets are taken in regards to challenges & races. Smoking, as well---mention of a guy probably finding something stronger than a cigarette. Bars in different towns sell alcohol & whiskey. Some gang members smoke joints of a drug. A man recalls a memory of being drugged at the age of 16 in order to receive (involuntarily) a tattoo without resistance on his part.

ROMANTIC CONTENT
A gang warlord is known for his "love of whiskey & women." A young woman is warned that if she wishes to "stay out of his bed," she should prover herself a challenge. It's implied that at least one female gang member was once an unwilling companion of the warlord.

A guy jokes with his friend: "what if I'm feeling cuddly?" (to which his friend flips him off).

It's implied that many girls who are captured by the gang are taken advantage of by the warlord. A bully makes a lewd remark about wanting company at night. A rather sensual-looking woman shows off all of her curves. A few sexual implications & innuendos suggested. But nothing is ever described or graphic in any way. And absolutely no spicy scenes.

Two members of the gang share a secret relationship but are forbidden such as part of the warlord's rules. They are extremely careful in snatching precious moments together.

A bar in town sports flirtatious waitresses in short skirts & low necklines. At a local bar, a rider sidles up to Gioia & runs a hand down her back, but immediately encounters a punch to the throat and the threat of her blade.

A man forces himself on a girl---kissing her smack on the mouth; but to everyone's (and the reader's!) utter surprise, she kisses him back (all the while fighting revulsion at her actions, but seeing a means to survival), and promptly challenges him to a race.

CONCLUSION
Loved it. I. Need. The. SEQUEL!! We're not left with a cliffhanger, so to speak, but there's obviously PLENTY of room for another book, and I needs it!!!!

The whole story---the plot, the TWISTS, the world-building---I enjoyed it all. It was rather refreshing to be in a desert setting where the world has the tribal vibes of the Native American cultures (maybe even some African cultures), mixed in with the more modern, western feel of motorcycles, mechanickin', and endless desert roads.

I could have done without the unnecessary language & numerous uses of the middle finger---hence my reason for only a 4-star rating instead of the full five, but this would still be a book I'd heartily recommend.

4.5/5 stars (rounded to 5)

I received an ARC of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Laramie's family was murdered when she was a child. Now, she rides her motorcycle through the desert in search of any family that might have survived. Since she's an amazing mechanic, she doesn't really face trouble on her journey--until the day she rides into gang territory. And the gangs don't just let people leave. Fighting for her freedom, Laramie meets and befriends a man named Gered. He's sick of his life in the gangs. Determined to fight her way to freedom, Laramie will do whatever it takes to escape.

I love how, despite how dark this book is, it has so many wholesome and touching aspects to it. The situation is bleak, mistakes are fatal, and there is no way out. Even so, the characters are there for each other. The found family in this book definitely put a smile on my face with their banter and comradery.

I really liked both of the main characters. Laramie isn't afraid to fight for what she believes in, and she makes it known that she will not just bow down like the others. Gered hates himself and the things he's done, but he will keep doing it to survive. He fights for what's right in his own subtle ways, even though it puts him at risk. It was interesting to read both of their POVs! These two really made the book for me.

While the main two characters are my favorites, the side characters are great as well! They have their own personalities, goals, and struggles. They make for a wonderful found family.

Overall, this was an action-packed, gritty, and suspenseful book! It killed me to put it down. It doesn't shy away from darker themes, but even more prevalent is the theme of hope. The struggles the characters face feel so real, and it makes you want to root for them. The cliffhanger at the end sets up the next book without making me want to scream, so I will do my best to patiently wait for book 2. I felt it was a fitting end for the first book.

I would recommend this to those who like darker books, or those looking for an action book with a western theme! There are lots of content/trigger warnings so I'll try my best to list them below.

Content: swearing (no s or f words though), drinking, drugs, multiple uses of middle finger, violence/death, sexual harassment and assault, implied rape

The setting/premise (desert sands and motorcycle gangs) and post-apocalyptic feel was what first drew me to the book. It’s different from anything else that I’ve read, which had me interested! (Now having read the book, it doesn’t really seem like this is a post-apocalyptic world necessarily, just so you know!)
A few things about the book are that I enjoyed were the different backgrounds/ethnic groups as well as the driving themes of the book seeming to be finding belonging and new purpose. The book does touch with some deeper emotional themes, such as a traumatic past and difficulty rebuilding trust and beliefs. I like when authors add in histories, lands, and gods to the world which is also touched on in Then Comes a Drifter. (Though these could have been expounded upon more, in my personal opinion.)
I will note that there is use of lighthearted use of alcohol/drugs and some sexual/rape references which doesn’t align with how I view these things. However, the author had provided an appropriate content warning when I was inquiring about it. I understand that it creates the “gang” feel, which is what I think the author was going for.
It was difficult for me to get into the story—only at 60-70% of the way through did it really start to pick up for me, and I had a hard time connecting with the main characters (I was much more interested in the side characters!). Unfortunately, there were many instances where I had to choose to suspend disbelief in order to continue reading onward. I think that within fiction, there should be wiggle room for the “unbelievable”. But when it strikes the reader clear enough that it brings them out of the written world, it can be detracting.
All this being said, I am still going to pick up another Banschbach book—this is the first I’ve read of hers and want to give some others a try!

I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, so thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read.

I should begin by saying I am a fan of C.M. Banschbach's work and have really enjoyed her other books. This one just didn't quite hit it for me as I am definitely more drawn to fantasy. I would definitely recommend for readers with a bend toward gritty contemporary (and gang intrigue and a hefty dose of motorcycles) Themes of loyalty and found family are certainly strong. The friendship vibes are very real. I did like the support of Gered, Dayo, and Gioia and how they are respectful (mostly) of weaker areas in one another.

I must also make a note on content for drinking, mention of smoking/substance use, rude gestures, and sexual mentions (nothing on page). While they do fit the world, I had a difficult time (mostly as it pertains to the drinking) being portrayed with little to no consequences(or risks) in a high violence environment, which not only seemed unlikely, but also irresponsible on the part of the characters. I do feel that the issue of rape and rape as a possible consequence/story stakes was not handled as sensitively as it could have been.

I applaud the author for tackling such a unique story.

This wasn't particularly easy to write, but these are my honest thoughts and opinions are my own.

In a world where Mad Max meets western fantasy, Then Comes a Drifter delivers a gut punch of resilience. The setting drew me to this story at first; deserts are very near and dear to my heart, and any story set there has unique challenges for the characters. This is a world where magic has faded—remaining only in the spots of color in its descendants’ eyes—and faith has disappeared save for the few people who cling to hope.

Against this tapestry comes Laramie, a young woman searching for something—or someone—she barely remembers. When her best-laid plans go awry in spectacular fashion, we meet Gered. After a lifetime of grief, pain, and slaughter, he’s on the verge of giving up when Laramie offers him a glimpse of hope. I’ll be honest, his character resonated more with me as a reader than Laramie’s did. Nonetheless, the interactions between all the cast members were so engaging I couldn’t set the book down.

This story was described as gritty, hostile, even brutal, and it certainly lived up to its description. It’s definitely not a book for young readers, and adults with sensitive hearts should probably pass as well. There’s a lot of death, a lot blood, a lot of (on-page and implied) violence inflicted deliberately by humans against other humans.
However, even amidst all the grit, the light still shines through. Characters make deliberate choices for the benefit of others, even at the detriment of themselves. There’s sympathy and even empathy for those trapped in situations beyond their control. Faith is a prevailing theme for one character in particular, and the importance of family (both found and blood) cannot be emphasized more.

I wish I could give higher than five stars to this one. It might not be to everyone’s taste, but it was the perfect book for this reader.

A fun, action packed ride (ha!) from start to finish and I loved it ❤️

Laramie was kickbutt epic, and I loved her stubbornness that helped her hold her own against the Villain Boss. Gered was epic in his slightly moody way (one of the best kinds of epic XD).

Ahh, but Dayo. He and Gered both have my heart but Dayo is adorable and I loved the sibling-esque bond between him and Laramie.

And the tension!!! So much delicious tension that builds and builds!

I'ma need book 2 ASAP 😂

How shall I fear that from which I’m protected by Heaven’s wings?

Gritty and soulful and brave.

🏍️ heads-up, to take from what the author says herself: this book is definitely PG-13. Characters swear and gesture, reference abuse (physical and sexual), occasionally abuse substances, and are often forced to fight brutally. All of it feels very believable, but it’s certainly an intense read. 🏍️

Another fabulous book by C. M. Banschbach, that's all that really needs to be said here. If you haven't read one of the author's books... you're truly missing out. And now I'm really not sure how to pick a favorite one to recommend! :P So maybe just do what I did and go pick up as many as you can. 😂

"This is one of my top reads of the year." - me after finishing this book at 3am on February 6th

Seriously, people, you need to get your hands on this book, especially if gritty, dark redemption stories are your thing. (They're definitely my thing.) Toss in some post-apocalyptic vibes, a hint of magic, a desolate southwest setting, and found family, and you've got a recipe for perfection. These characters completely stole my heart. Especially Gered, my broken trauma boy with a hidden heart of gold. When is the second book coming out? Because I need it approximately now.

I received a free ARC in return for an honest review.

The writer had me hooked from the first chapter! Such a refreshing low fantasy read that takes you out of the normal fantasy lands and into a desert filled with bike gangs and betrayals. And Gered?? I'm here for him all day!! If you need to break up your reading routine and go into a world that's fresh and different, you need this book in your life!
