Ivan the Bold

Rate this book
Listening Length: 11 hours and 2 minutes

She’d walk through fire to save their world. To claim her, he’d let it all burn.

Her widowed heart freshly healed, Lavinia wants nothing more than to bind herself to Ivan, the man who adores her fatherless sons almost as much as he loves her. Then duty calls her to risk their future and return to a life she’d fled - to a man who wants her as much as she fears him.

Tasked with escorting Lavinia back to the land of her birth, Ivan pledges his heart along with his protection. He’ll have his mark upon her within days. But no sooner do they arrive than her previous life threatens to tear her away forever. Haunted by the mistakes of her past, Lavinia would do anything to redeem herself and save her people. Consumed by desire, Ivan must decide if passion is worth more than the survival of his race.

Duty or love? They can’t have both.

When Denali Day was trying to figure out “what to be when she grew up” she noticed all her written stories featured a scene where the beautiful heroine patched up the wounds of a gallant hero. So she decided to become a nurse. Twelve years and two degrees later, she realized all she ever really wanted was to be a writer.

Now she lives in the midwest with her adoring husband, a real life gallant hero, and their two wicked goblins (children). When she isn’t writing she’s reading and when she’s not doing either of those things she’s probably plundering the fridge for something she can smother in whipped cream.

She couldn't allow this to truly happen. Not yet. Not when the future was still chaos. She wouldn't risk Ivan like that. His one chance at happiness.
She reached for the blade. Ivan caught her wrist, blocking her.
She flicked a pleading look up at him and started to speak. He cut her off, his voice soothing.
"Trust me."
She would.

I made it!

Almost a month late and a bit heartbroken, but I finally finished my third book of this amazing series (fourth, if you count the gem that was the prequel Sven the Collector) and, like I anticipated, I definitely wasn't disappointed.
I found Ivan the Bold to be very mature in terms of covered topics and very strong in its prose. Once again, I have zero problems with the execution.
Denali Day is an impeccable writer, there's no denying that.

I think I already said this, but when it comes to this series, I don't mind repeating myself.
The thing I love the most about these books, aside from each book being darker than the previous one, is how every story follows the same general plot, but it still manages to maintain a certain singularity.
In fact, Ivan the Bold, gives its own version of a "forced marriage" shenanigans garnishing it with new elements the other books left uncovered.
You could read each book individually and you'd still be able to enjoy yourself.
I sill highly recommend reading the entire thing back to back, though, because they're all filled with details and amazing scenes and relationships it'd be a pity to miss.

Anyway.
Like I said, Ivan the Bold brings yet again something new to the Dokiri Brides scenario, and I appreciated this new insight I got into the story, but it was probably also my least favorite romance.
It had its moments and some very specific scenes that had me all hot and bothered, but I couldn't let myself get invested like I had in the past.
I must admit wasn't a big fan of Lavinia, either, and that's probably what got me on the three-star rating side of the argument for the first time.
She was a bit too abrasive and edged for my tastes.
Don't get me wrong, I love damaged, flawed, deep character like the next reader, but there just was something about her that didn't tick with me.
However, I believe the fact that, despite my dislike, I was rooting for her to get the redemption and happy ending she clearly deserved, tells something about the story and how well it portrays how even people we might not like are, at the end of the day, sill people and are worthy of a second change.

Overall, I really liked this book and thoroughly enjoyed the way it proposed Magnus, who will be the next male lead. I really can't wait to see what Denali Day comes up with, next!

3 1/2 "Sacrifice" Stars!

Well... what can I say... for this one I felt somber, and a bit hopeless for a very large part of the book. There was a lot of strife. And once again, Denali Day threw me for another loop with the Dokiri Warriors being off the mountain and all that that exposed them to.

The story kicked off almost just where the last book ended. The Dokiri Clans were facing a threat they could not have imagined. Lavinia, a Dokiri bride that had been widowed may know of a weapon that can help her adopted Clan turn the tide on their enemy. So the Dokiri warriors venture to the lowlands; to Lavinia native lands where she had a destiny waiting for her she'd run away from in desperation almost twelve years earlier. But in order to help her new clan, she may have to give up everything and everyone she had come to care for and love. The Ebronians- Lavinia's native people were awful.

What I did enjoy so much in this story was Ivan and also Lavinia. They both had so many personal obstacles to overcome. Both the main characters went through great transformation and personal growth. Individually and together I loved them both.

Now! I will be excitedly awaiting Magnus's story. I cannot wait to see what new element Ms. Day will throw into the series mix. I think it is going to be very good and very unpredictable. Plus Magnus is such a cheeky guy. If his love is who I think it is, there will be fireworks!

I highly recommend this series for Fantasy Romance readers. The intimate scenes are just that- intimate. But not graphic. Start at the beginning, as the stories build upon each other and enjoy. Happy reading!

An amazingly written book!
The series is progressing fantastically and in this a new country (and culture) that is completely different from Na Dokkiri is introduced.

I loved the hero Ivan the bold. I loved that chapter with the same name too. He was strong, rash, impulsive, but loving stepdad.
Heroine, not so much. Because she made a mess of things. But I cannot pinpoint what. She has my respect and I loved how she transformed from a stutter stark to an eagle.
The characters were all complex and had depth and so many new ones where also introduced.
I just wish hero’s equation with his brother’s were a little more smooth.

Recommended.
Safety issue is a lil bit tricky as heroine was promised to a vile man when they were intimate. But that didn’t bother me in this book.

- 4.5 stars -

This series is very refreshing and original. I absolutely love the Dokiri and their way of life. The main characters of this book are Ivan and Lavinia. Lavinia is a widow and has two sons but has been growing closer to Ivan, who was her late husband's best friend. Ivan is very protective of Lavinia and her boys. There is danger and an upcoming war for which they'll need allies. One of them are the Ebronians from Ebron, from where Lavinia is originally from. To defeat their enemies they will need a pendant that will help them, which is located in Ebron. Lavinia travels with Ivan and other Dokiri warriors to convince the leader of the land that they have to fight together.

The world that the author has built for this series is amazing. In this book we are travelling to a new part in this fantasy world, and I loved seeing the characters maneuver this new strange place. This book was detailed, interesting, and engaging. I'm always afraid that the author will dump a lot of information in a short amount of time in fantasy books, but that is not the case for this series. The author is broadening the world she created each book and does a really good job at it. Ivan and Lavinia were a great couple, with their flaws and all. I loved their imperfections and the way their relationship started and developed throughout the book. Their individual growth was also great. They had their ups and downs, and my heart broke seeing some of the decisions they had to make.

Ivan the Bold is my favorite book in the series so far. It was action-packed, romantic, emotional, funny, and had me hooked until the end. I especially loved the characters and admired their courage and loyalty. They weren't perfect and had to find themselves, and I was happy to be on that journey with them. The Dokiri Brides series has become one of my favorite fantasy series, and I already look forward to the next book. These books can be read as stand-alones however, I think you'll be missing background information on both the culture and characters. There is also a story-line that continues throughout the series, so it can be that you'll get a bit confused if you start with this book.

Aaaannnnddd....

We're 3/3 now on the sleep deprivation train.

To be honest, I went into this book a bit skeptical. Ivan and Lavinia weren't my favorite characters, and coming down from the high that was Erik and Tysha's book, I wasn't sure how the author would be able to make me care about them enough to read the story, let enough care enough to forget that I'm human and I need sleep to function.

At first, Ivan was his usual entitled butthead self, and Lavinia closely resembled a doormat.

Then, Denali Day grabbed me by the ear, looked me dead in the eyes, and said, "I'm the captain now."

I shouldn't have doubted her.

One of the things that makes this series so captivating, so special, is the massive transformation the characters go through over the course of the story. She starts with characters who are deeply flawed at best and straight-up unlikeable at worst. Then she gets to work. Like a master craftsman (and potential sadist), she pounds the clay, scoring and shaping it over and over until it becomes something beautiful.

There's just something about a good character arc that simply resonates with the reader, giving us hope that we too can make it through the pain and struggles of life to become our best selves.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go drown myself in a pool of coffee before jumping into book four!

Boy this series is something else. Huge hit, miss, huge hit, sorta miss..... This installment was no fun. Good writing, story is good but.....angst from first to the last page all the way through. I wasn’t a huge Lavinia fan from seeing her in previous books and felt like Ivan deserved to find his own wife, not his friends widow. But the next book looks to be a great fiery couple with Magnus and Nadine. 🤞🤞🤞 Overall this is a good series.

Ivan is a wonderful man

I'm definitely enjoying these bold women, and I do believe the next one will be the boldest yet. Ivan's story was a good one, he and his chosen much their way through things but both end up better for it in the end. I great look forward to the next book.

One of the most pleasing aspects of this series is how individual each story is. It is so easy in this type of series to allow each couple's story to be formulaic. Thus far, each installment has been anything but. Ms. Day has infused this series with such creativity and heart, what's not to love?

Ivan and Lavinia's road is not an easy one and is often filled with anxiety and heartache, but it is one that I was glad to traverse. What a great treatise on the meaning of love this is. On showing what love can look like and what a burden sacrifice can be. It was truly a pleasure to read this.

I loved Lavinia far more than I thought I would. The slow burn was good but man I wanted to smack both of them a few times. Ivan is amazing and such a rough and tough man. He is so caring and does whatever he can for the ones he loves. I actually liked that they had to find themselves before one another. Ivan had to grow up some and realize there was more to himself then just his mission. I devoured this one just like the rest.

This was a mixed bag for me.
First of all I like that the author has made all three books, four if you read the prequel, so far in the series so different.
The scenario of stealing a bride could have become stale but each couple has different circumstances and issues
This book is Ivan and Lavinia.
We have had teasers of them in the previous book.
Lavinia is a widow and has two sons but although it is said she loved her now dead husband it has been a few years.
She also has a stutter and in this book we get to see a possible explanation for it.

I loved Ivan, he was totally into Lavinia and has respectfully waited for the right time to make his move.
I wasn't too keen on Lavinia, I'm not sure why.
It's hinted in the blurb that the story will centre around her past, her life before being taken as a bride.
I found it a bit frustrating, she knows she should explain the circumstances of her past and knows what will happen when she returns and yet chooses not to.
Her character is one of a timid nature, but still it has a huge impact and she doesn't say anything.

I don't want to spoil the story by explaining but it becomes a case of putting her desires before the lives of the Dokiri people or putting them first.

There is no intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine, this author writes closed door bedroom scenes, but the only intimacy is between the couple.

There is small other woman drama but of no consequence, though he had opportunity if he had chosen.
There is other man drama.

There are huge breadcrumbs dropped for the next book, Magnus.
The book could be read as a standalone but characters are introduced in previous books and an enemy threat runs through the series and develops in each book.

ARC.

The book is well written, but it is not my favorite so far.
On the one hand, I liked that the story went out of the usual format of the series and turned in a new, fresh and interesting direction - both in terms of the development of the connection between Lavinia and Ivan and in terms of the events that happened around.
I usually don't like a story taking place within the walls of palaces and prefer more open and wild landscapes, but that suited the story and it was diverse so it was fine .
The main problem for me was that I did not connect so much to the character of Lavinia. At first I was very curious to see how she would cope with the immense difficulty she had to take on her shoulders but as the story progressed I found myself repeatedly disappointed by the endless amount of tears and her indecision. The stage where she decided to take matters into her own hands and found her strength was a little too late for me. Ivan, too, was less the type I connect with. Yes, he was brave, total in his love, but also very bitter, jealous and always too serious.
In general, their whole love story was presented as a tragic and difficult story. I would be happy if from time to time there were also points of laughter and lightness and not just sadness and heaviness.
What I liked most about the book from the very first moment I met her character was Nadine !!!! Magnus and she are exactly the kind of characters I love! And I look forward to their interactions and the sparks that fly between them !!

So good!
This series is quickly becoming one of my favorites. The combination of fantasy, romance, action and adventure are perfect and Denali Day creates such vivid worlds that you can see.

It was almost 5 stars but for whatever reason it took me a minute to get into the book and to connect with the characters but after I did- it was smooth sailing and good times. I think part of it was that Lavinia was very unsure of herself and I really needed her to stand up and take charge. It can be difficult for me when characters let themselves be walked on. However, she was able to redeem herself to me later on.

Ivan the Bold is the third brother in the Dokiri Brides series and he brings a twist on the traditional taking of a bride by wanting a known widow instead of a stranger. Lavinia knows heartache and she must make hard choices and sacrifices when it comes to protecting those she loves.

This story was different from the previous two as we are introduced to more of the world that is easy to imagine thanks to the detail Day writes and I envisioned myself exploring as though I was in the book.
I can’t wait to read the next installment of the series shortly!
I highly recommend this series if you are into sexy shirtless Viking types, romance, fantasy and adventure.

Each story in the Dokiri Brides series is unique. Rather than follow a template, the author gives us a truly singular adventure and romance in each book. Though the heroes of the stories are siblings, each brother follows his own particular path.

In this third installment of the series, the Dokiri leave their mountain in order to try to form an alliance with the Ebronians to defeat the Soul Theives. Both Ivan and Lavinia are part of the party that travels to the desert.

To me, Ivan is the least likeable of the brothers. He is quick to speak, often in criticism of his eldest brother Hollen. And he appears to be selfish, lacking the ability to consider the big picture. Romance readers know that this does not make a good hero, so at the very least, Ivan will have his own journey of self-discovery in the tale that bears his name.

Lavinia has been a favorite secondary character in the previous books, particularly in Hollen the Soulless when she befriended Joselyn, the future Dokiri Saliga. In this story, Lavinia is revealed as both weaker than imagined and much stronger that she ever believed she could be.

To me, Lavinia's heroism overshadowed Ivan on every page. Her heart and wisdom could not be matched by Ivan. But when it came time for Ivan to also act like a hero, his sheer bravery and skill as a fighter was breathtaking (as in you might stop breathing while you are reading a certain nightmare of a scene).

This is one of those stories where the hero and the heroine have roles that will take them on divergent paths. And no matter how much you want them to be able to be together, honor and duty will conspire to separate them. Expect heartbreak, tears and despair.

However, this is a romance. I had to keep reminding myself of that while I was reading Lavinia’s and Ivan’s story. It is supposed to have a happy ending. And it does. The ending will wipe away your tears and then make you want the next book now.

It is no secret that I love this series! Ivan the Bold can be read as a standalone, but I recommend you read the entire series.

Many thanks to the author who provided a copy of her book in exchange for my honest review.

Denali Day does it again! She wrote a book which kept me totally engrossed in the story with my stomach clenched in fear for Lavinia, and more so for Ivan as this is their story. Lavinia was a gritu who had 2 sons and had lost her beloved husband Soren in battle, and who stuttered because of her lack of self confidence yet when the time came to show her worth, and to do what was necessary for those she loved and for Bedmeg she took the fearful plunge. The veligiri were becoming a massive threat and the Na Dokiri knew they could not face these monsters on their own any longer, they needed allies and they needed the amulet which belonged to the Pajel. So because Lavinia was Pajel, she volunteered to return to the home of her people, who she feared and had run from before she had become Dokiri. Once she gets to Ebronia, she is separated immediately from Hollen's group and even from Ivan and from thereon her life seems not to be her own any more. Her uncle and her sister Nadine, see the Dokiri men as savages, barbarians, little more than animals and do their best to keep them away from her. The story is tense in the extreme and very intriguing as all the previous books in this amazing series have been. The characters are very charismatic and those who are labelled barbarian and who are looked down upon once again manage to put those who label them to shame. I really loved seeing Lavinia come into her own, she shows great courage and loyalty to her clan and it is very satisfying to see her beloved by Ivan in such a way. Every woman would just love to be loved as Lavinia was by Ivan. The fight against the Valigiri continues in the next book called Magnus the Vast, and I just cannot wait to read further into what has become one of my very favourite series.

Denali Day delivers another breathtaking Dokiri romance! I enjoyed Hollen and Joselyn’s romance. I liked Erik and Tysha’s even more. But Ivan and Lavinia’s romance blew me away! Denali is such an incredible author, and her books deserve far more attention than they are getting!

I immensely enjoy the skillful character crafting in these books. Ivan the Bold’s character crafting reached new levels, though! Ivan lives up to his name again and again and again. He is an impulsive, reckless and fearless man paired with a sweet and loving nature. I adored the romance between him and Lavinia! I loved how sacrificial their love was. Even though this is a romance, halfway through the novel, I was legit freaking out that Ivan and Lavinia would not be able to be together. I laugh at myself now, but that is just how good a writer Denali Day is!
Tysha’s character is so well-developed. I love how she simply seemed to come into a truer version of herself when placed under pressure, and put under fire. There is just something about these characters that makes me have all the feels.

One of my favorite scenes with Ivan: **slight spoiler alert** Ivan and the giant white bat. Wow. Just wow. He is so incredible.
Another one of my favorite scenes: Lavinia when she stands up to her husband near the end of the book. **spoiler alert ended**

I started Magnus the Vast as soon as I finished Ivan the Bold because I knew that Magnus and Lavinia’s sister Nadine would somehow have to end up together, and I couldn’t wait another moment to find out how that would happen.
Thank you so much for another lovely installment in this series, Denali! I enjoyed it immensely.

Lavinia is a Queen!

She may not literally be a queen but she is to me. She has overcome soooo much throughout this series. She may have a vice but so what, so many do now a days. Her willingness to get up and care for her family and tribe just speak to the strength of her heart and character. She doesn’t let her stutter deter her from living her life to the fullest and the fact that the tribe depend on her so much more proof of how great she is.

She had me internally applauding and cheering for her at the end when she took her place in front of all and rallied her people. Queen!! Not in title but heart and example.

Now Ivan had some major obstacles to overcome and his steadfastness and strength were impressive. The battle scenes in this series are some of my favorite of all times. So detailed, fast paced and so full of great unique creatures and twists.

Now from previous stories Denali has proven she can create happily ever after stories in if the journey may not always be happy. I don’t skip ahead or read the end first but this book I did! Denali has such a strong way of telling a story that you are drawn into the scene and don’t want to leave. I just had to make sure that a certain couple characters made it after a particular scene, especially after what happened to Sven. I won’t spoil what happened but this story was amazing. I love where this series is going and can’t wait for the fireworks and strength of wills to come in Magnus’s story.

The writing and editing of the ARC version of the manuscript was clean, with no typos and pretty sentences. I will admit that I enjoyed the previous novel in this series more than I did this one. The world building was excellent, with me getting a vivid picture of the heroine's home culture and nation, which was really interesting in many ways. I liked how there were so many seeming contradictions in this culture. The characterization was excellent, with both hero and heroine being sympathetic, complex individuals with strengths and weaknesses. The development of the romantic relationship was sweet, angsty, and satisfying, even though there were no sizzling sexy times in this novel. The plot and pacing were tight and exciting, with this novel having both high angst and high stakes which I enjoyed. This novel used the Star-Crossed Lovers trope. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship were both four stars in this novel. The world building was five stars. The plot and pacing were four stars. The combined rating of this novel was therefore four stars. This novel had a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that is a big plus. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy fantasy novels and readers who enjoy romance novels. This novel has strong cross-genre appeal, in my opinion. I look forward to reading the next novel in this series when it releases. I will buy myself a keeper copy of this novel.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved Ivan and Lavinia's story. Ivan's determination to show Lavinia that he chooses her above all others, that he loves her enough to respect her choice not to be with him, was a wonderful testament to loving someone against all odds.

Ivan refuses to give up on Lavinina. He trusts her, believes in her and sacrifices everything for her- including his own chance at happiness.

Lavinia is convinced that saving her kingdom and her people require choices that will forever part her from the man she loves. She pays this price to protect her children - even though her heart is breaking.

Reconciliation and redemption are never easy. Trusting someone with your heart and your happiness is both a burden and a gift. But it's one Ivan will happily slay the evil horde for.

This slow-burn, intense emotional ride will draw you ever deeper into the Dokiri world.

Ivan the Bold by Denali Day is the third book in the Dokiri Brides series. I could hardly put this book down! It's my favorite book in the series so far. The things that Ivan and Lavinia have to wrestle with are hard! Do they choose love or survival of the clan? Will Lavinia be the brave eagle that Ivan sees her as or remain the timid stutter-stark that others see? This story is a page-turner with all the feels, good and bad. The ending left me craving more! I can't wait to read the story of Magnus the Vast and his future bride!
I received an ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.

This is the fourth Denali Day book I’ve read in the Dokiri Brides series (the first is the free prologue) and I was really wondering how it could possibly be different from the other three. And I was so happy and excited to see the setting change, and move to where Lavinia grew up!

I also loved how Lavinia was a widow who Ivan actually knew and formed a friendship with first; much different than the other books where the Dokiri men kidnap their brides.

This is actually the perfect book series to turn into a Netflix series. Netflix, are you listening?

If you enjoy easy to read fantasy (nothing too crazy with land names and too complex worlds, which can take you out of the story) and romance, than give Ivan the Bold a read!

So this is book three in this great series and our main characters are Ivan and Lavinia and what a great story it is! With an intriguing and intense storyline I found myself once again lost in this amazIng world that the author has created and just did not want it to end! It’s action packed and very emotional and yep I shed a few tears but it’s also a romance with a hea for our hero and heroine and I loved it!

I enjoyed reading about Ivan and Lavinia. I enjoyed the strength and selflessness Lavinia showed. I also enjoyed the surety of Ivan's feeling. I also liked reading more about the Dokiri and the Ebronians and the plotline. The story does continue off of the first 2 books so I would recommend reading them first. While Lavinia and Ivan were not my favorite couple in the series, I think the plot in this was just as exciting.

Best of the series

Absolutely amazing! A roller coaster of emotions, action-packed and some sweet romance.

This is a great book. It's a whole new world compared to the other books. The Dokiri don't get lost by any means but this integrates a whole new culture and way of life. I wanted to crawl inside this book and kill some Ebronian's, that's for sure. They are a bunch of stuck up know it all's. I really loved watching Ivan and Lavinia's relationship bloom. Not to mention it was action packed. I loved it.
