I’m a writer, traveller and hopeful romantic with a lengthy bucket list, and many of my travel adventures have found homes in my novels. I’m also an avid reader, a film buff, a wine lover and a coffee snob.

I am currently on a one-year sabbatical, living and writing across the world, with my partner, Ben, who I met while travelling in Greece. Our real-life love story inspired my debut novel One Summer in Santorini, the first in the five-book Holiday Romance series with One More Chapter, an imprint of HarperCollins.

Also with One More Chapter, is the Christmas Romance series, celebrating my favourite time of the year, and a stand-alone romcom, The Dating Game, set in the world of reality TV.

I am now writing for Boldwood Books, including the 5-book Ever After Agency romcom series. Next up are 5 more standalone romcoms for Boldwood.

This was the perfect book for a winter day…or a summer day…spring day..,any day you fancy an escape. It features a beautiful setting, yummy food, a sweet love story and a woman’s journey to reinvent herself.

Jaelee is an overworked, super stressed PR rep who decides to take a sabbatical and figure out what she wants for the rest of her life, so she heads to a digital nomad retreat and there meets up with others from around the world who are like her and who are very much not like her in some ways, but quickly become good friends. Jaelee finds that she thrives in the unstructured setting and is able to revive her love for her work and find a new shot at happily ever after.
“Family isn’t just the flesh and blood people we’re related to-family is the people we chose to love.”

Read this if you love to travel, need a unique escape from reality or need a warm hug on a cold day.

A Sunrise Over Bali by Sandy Barker was the dose of escapism that I didn't know I needed. Prepare to be whisked away to gorgeous Bali, and to have your wanderlust stirred.

Jaelee Tan is a woman for whom overachievement is the status quo. Highly successful in her professional life, she has been unlucky in love, and it is her most recent heartbreak that sends her seeking an escape to the other side of the world. Rather predictably, she will find romance, but she will also come to fall in love with herself as new friends and adventures become the order of her unstructured days.

While the Balinese setting quickly seduced me, as I knew it would, I was less enamoured of protagonist Jaelee, who was emotionally and socially complex, and the polar opposite of the self deprecating heroine who is more familiar to readers of this particular genre. While this by no means detracted from Jaelee's story, I did find myself to be less invested in her journey toward a happily ever after.

Many thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for an ARC.

A Sunrise Over Bali was just what the doctor ordered! It’s been now 1267 days (not that I’m counting) since I traveled abroad so this fictional trip to Bali was the next best thing. Hopefully one day it won’t be fictional and I’ll be able to visit in real life cause, if I trust this book’s descriptions, it must be gorgeous.

After a recent break up, Jaelee decides to take a two month sabbatical in a digital nomads community in Bali (first time I hear about that). There, her priorities will take a 180º turn, in a journey of self-discovery that will change her life.

First of all, I didn’t know this character had some ties to other books from the author, but not having read them didn’t diminish my enjoyment of this story.

I’ve read some reviews saying it was a bit difficult to empathize with Jaelee, but I found it to be the exact opposite, maybe because I could see myself in her somehow. Her whole life she’s been pretty focused in her work (not me) and she’s built some barriers around herself, not letting other people in and holding her feelings (very much me) even with those closest to her. I found her journey pretty interesting, especially when it came to her relationship with her mum.

I adored every single person (and not person) she met in her retreat! Peta, Helena, Lu, the hot Scottish man (man bun and all)…They made such a tight group it felt like reading about your own group of friends.

Another thing I liked was the author didn’t limit herself to present the nice and touristy part of Bali, but she also described the not so perfect parts you won’t find out in in a travel brochure.

A Sunrise Over Bali was perfect escapism to a wonderful location in this time of restrictions, so join Jaelee in this journey of friendship, love and self-discovery. You won’t regret it!

Well clearly I need to follow in Jaelee’s footsteps and take a sabbatical in Bali! The setting for this story was magnificent and I loved all the tidbits of Bali food and culture. A Sunrise Over Bali was a cute, quick, easy to read, feel-good romance novel. I wanted a little more chemistry between the main characters, but the character development was well done. Good fun summer read!

Thank you to HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, and NetGalley for granting me a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

I struggled to connect with this book; compared to my other reads from Barker, this was not my favourite.

Jaelee decides to upsticks from Miami and take time out in Bali. Barker does not take long to transport readers to the Indonesian paradise and before we know it, we are being introduced to others who are staying at this retreat for ‘digital nomads’. (Yes, I have looked this up and it is actually a thing – remote working from anywhere in the world.) In this paradise, one nomad stands out above the rest: gorgeous Alistair, who is compared to Chris Hemsworth. For me, that ticked a box straight away!

However, I never was really convinced by the blossoming relationship between Jaelee and Alistair. I didn’t get swept away by the romantic magic of their connection and instead felt it moving too quickly. Indeed, in my opinion, I don’t believe the writer developed the characters enough in this story. Not only did I not get a sense of the chemistry in this romance, I thought the supporting characters were quite bland and easily confusable. This lessened my enjoyment of the story.

It was the delightful descriptions of the settings that really captured my imagination. It is clear that the writer knows this area very well (as referenced in the acknowledgements at the end of the book) and I felt transported to the hot and humid climes of Bali. It was so vividly described that I could imagine walking around with Jaelee and I loved the escapism this provided. When the story moves to juxtaposing Edinburgh, I was also entranced by the setting. It might have helped that I have recently visited this beautiful capital but, just like Bali, the descriptions were spot-on and incredibly enticing.

Over the course of the story, I don’t think too much really happened. Jaelee experiences a kind of “rest” whilst in Bali: reassessing what she feels is most important to her and taking stock of her career. There’s a lot of chat between characters but I didn’t think it really contributed much to the story, finding instead that I was a bit bored by some of the scenes in the story. Whilst Jaelee’s relationship with Alistair develops quickly, everything else seemed slow and prolonged, especially the ending. I would have preferred some more energy in the story, but I guess the nature of the plot reflects the relaxing time the characters are experiencing in Bali.

By far, it was the backdrop to the story that made this the most enjoyable. I loved the descriptions and I think it has whetted my appetite to visit what seems to be a very beautiful part of the world. Unfortunately, not gelling with the characters and remaining unconvinced by the romance did lessen my enjoyment of this escapism fiction.

With thanks to Harper Collins, One More Chapter and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It's always good to be able to curl up with one of Sandy Barker's holiday romance series, and this was no exception.

And we get to escape to Bali in this journey of self discovery for Jaelee. Well she may not think that is why she has taken a two month sabbatical the other side of the world, but it's certainly one of the effects of the trip.

There were many things I really loved about this book -

- the links to That Night in Paris, I didn't realise or quite twig before I started reading but Jaelee was on the coach trip in that book, there were assorted references to it, especially her close friendship with Cat, so i was delighted to see how Cat was getting on now too.
- the setting - well I do love an exotic setting and Bali is so well described that I felt as though I was there in the heat alongside Jaelee
- the idea of digital nomads, and places like UROP existing, thus being able to stay there for two months making good use of the way tourist visas can work in Indonesia.
- the group of friends that Jaelee makes, including the hot scot with the man bun, Lulu, Kermit, Peta and Helena (and not all of those are human!)

It's just a really enjoyable story that then had some surprises in store for me, that made the last quarter rather addictive to read as I needed to know what would happen next!

Another great book from the always talented Sandy Barker.

Thank you to One More Chapter and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

“We heal when we’re not paying attention and then, one day, we realise the thing that once tore us in two no longer has that power.”

Jaelee Tan is all the things her mother wanted her to be, yet she’s miserable. So miserable, in fact, that she is leaving her job and heading off on sabbatical to Bali, the magical land of introspection, for two months.

I absolutely loved this holiday romance! That’s saying something, as you probably notice, I don’t read romance. Barker, a seasoned romance writer, knows how to develop characters and their backstory, how to cultivate a believable romance and how to balance humour with life’s more serious challenges.

Jaelee Tan is now one of my favourite characters. I didn’t read ‘That Night In Paris,’ but I understand she was a supporting character. Regardless, I love how honest she is and how she recognizes her vulnerability. It’s also refreshing to read of a feisty and independent female lead who doesn’t come across as hard, uncaring or brash. This bold and flawed character with Korean heritage is a mass of contradictions and readers see her peeling away the layers she’s built up to protect herself. I’d love to sip an espresso martini with her and catch up on life.

I’m like Jaelee and don’t care for man buns either, but somehow (gasp) I fell for Alistair. I watched him through her eyes as he progressed from Mr Man Bun to the ‘verra, verra, sexy’ Hot Scot. I giggled reading Barker’s description of him as ‘Hemsworthy.’ He’s flawed and trying to live his true life, but he’s so in tune with his emotions and his passion and I honestly felt that the two were really meant to be together. The blossoming chemistry, with its tension and flirting, felt real.

I think the book's success is due to the author allowing Jaelee to walk in her footsteps. Barker also enjoyed two months in Ubud, Bali at the ROAM co-living space for digital nomads! The lovable dog, Lu, is real, too, and was at ROAM during her stay. The zen feeling, authenticity and the natural flow in the narrative is a result of the author knowing the setting with her eyes closed. I appreciated the threads of (1) ‘your past influences your future’ and (2) compassion, for yourself and others, is a necessary ingredient for moving on with one’s life.

I’ve only read The Christmas Swap by this author, but I will gladly go back and read about the Parsons sisters in books 1-3. I’m looking forward to book 5, Wedding in Tuscany, in June 2022, the Christmas sequel, The May Ladies Christmas, in October 2022, and her new crime-thriller adventure with author Fiona Leitch sometime this year.

I was gifted this advance copy by Sandy Barker, HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

For context: I'm in freezing, dark Norway, and this book lifted my mood so much. Sandy Barkers books never disappoint. This time, I've enjoyed travelling to Bali with the lovely Jaelee and following her journey of … well, that would be spoiling the story. Needless to say, it's beautifully written, Bali is a character in it's own right, and the characters surrounding Jaelee are quirky and lovable. In other words, a perfect holiday read to get you in holiday mood.

Romance and a far-off destination...A Sunrise Over Bali is a perfect combination for me.

Thirty-five-year-old Jaelee Tan has crammed into and achieved much in her life and is now a Junior Vice President of the second largest PR agency in Florida. Hard work and determination, fuelled by Tina Tan have reaped their rewards as she owns a South Beach Condo and far too many pairs of designer shoes. Yet, despite her success, Jae is lonely and unhappy with her life.
When at her best friend's 40th birthday party she spots her ex and his new wife, it highlights how miserable she is. At a time in her life when it's smarter to handle issues head-on, she does the total opposite by running away, as she flies to Bali for a two-month sabbatical, in the hope she can turn her life around…

As a heroine, Jae doesn't instantly warm to readers. With a mother who has always been a force to reckon with, it's no surprise, her only daughter has achieved much in her life. Jaelee is tough and ambitious but also, uninformed with the world that surrounds her as she views and judges others with a critical eye. However, all it takes is a change of scenery and new acquaintances to change her attitude and to see the world and other people from a whole new perspective.

Ms. Barker fills the pages with beautiful words to match the stunning Balinese backdrop as the heroine settles into her temporary accommodation. It's a steep learning curve for her, but it isn't long before she meets fellow residents at UROP (You Are Our People) and begins to see that her life is full of opportunities to grasp. The supporting cast of characters is a delightful bunch of people… the kind you would want to be friends with. This and the engaging narrative creates an escapist adventure for anyone looking for a distraction from their everyday life.

As I dived into this novel, the lyrics from the late great John Denver sprung to mind, as the suppressed feelings of my wanderlust surfaced. I dreamed of packing my suitcase and laptop… "to leave on a jet plane", and head off to paradise to indulge in some meaningful 'me time'. The reality, however, means I've remained where I am but with a longing to visit a new destination, sold to me through the author's vivid descriptions.

For those who have read, That Night in Paris, (like myself), you'll get an opportunity to catch up with Cal again. If you haven't, don't worry, as both books are stand-alone. Either way both books won't disappoint.

A SUNRISE OVER BALI by SANDY BARKER.

If you fancy some sunny escapism to a tropical paradise this is the book for you.

This is book 4 in the Holiday Romance series. However, A Sunrise Over Bali can easily be read and enjoyed as a stand alone story.

Jaelee is a high achiever, but unlucky in love. A sabbatical to Bali could be just what she needs to change her life.

There are some fabulous characters in this book. Alister the Hot-Scot will raise your temperature and although Jaelee was a bit of a challenge to take to, her journey did change her into a much softer and more likeable person.

This book is beautifully written and an utterly charming, fun read.

I loved the setting, Bali has been on my wish list for years. Some mouth watering food descriptions too, really added to the ambiance of the story.

So grab your factor 50, pour yourself a Pina Colada and escape into this absolute gem of a book.

The fourth book in the #HolidayRomance series centers on Jaelee Tan. While on a sabbatical in Bali to escape a fight with a friend and to get over a broken heart, Jaelee quits her successful PR job and then needs to decide what to do with her life. There's also the matter of fellow traveler, Alistair. He's been dealing with a long-term relationship breakdown and a family health emergency and might be just who Jaelee's been looking for. While there's the obvious romance factor of this story, I really enjoyed the friendships Jaelee formed with the people she met in Bali and how they helped her find a new career path. There was also an added layer of family drama and dynamics, both for Jaelee and Alistair, which lifted the story for me and held my interest. As is usual for Sandy Barker's books, the descriptions of the settings and food will have you inspired to book an overseas trip. Recommended for adventurous lovers of romance stories.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own. I have read all of Sandy Barker's Holiday Romance series and this one is my favorite by far. I loved the Bali setting - a place I'll probably only ever dream of visiting. But this book did a good job at fulfilling my Bali wanderlust, even if just for a short time. I really enjoyed the characters and their dynamics with others in this story. And I love that the book was centered around digital nomads, which is very in nowadays. Sandy Barker's writing and stories just get better and better in my opinion, and I can't wait to read more!

Tropes
- Vacation romance

Jaelee has had enough of her life, after taking a sabbatical from her PR job, she books a trip to Bali. To relax and hopefully heal after seeing her ex with his new wife at her best friend’s birthday party. In Bali Jaelee has to adjust to a different level of home comforts and makes friends with a fun bunch of travellers, including a “Hemsworth” lookalike from Scotland.

This is the type of book you want to read on a beach, it’s a carefree read but still filled with depth and beautiful emotion. I enjoyed it! It wasn’t life changing or anything but it was enough to grab my attention

‘So, is this some kind of Eat, Pray, Love thing?’

Does Bali appeal right about now? Do you need to feed your wanderlust and escape on a sabbatical? Sounds good. I am, however, torn as I just don’t know how to reconcile my polar response to, A Sunrise Over Bali. I have read some of Sandy’s other books such as, The Christmas Swap which I very much enjoyed but this one I am undecided about.

The defining attribute of this book is definitely the location - Bali. Whether you have ever been or just wish for some armchair travel, then Sandy has you covered. From stunning locale to the digital nomad lifestyle, you become immersed in expat living. Sandy delves much deeper than all the touristy spots and, as the title indicates, sunrises will never quite be the same again.

‘The sky is lighter now, the pink having dissolved into the distinct blue of the Balinese sky. My gaze shifts to the dense jungle, picking out palm trees, their fronds swaying slightly in the morning breeze.’

There are some good characters and plot stories that evolve with everything from friendships to romance. It was, however, the soul searching that drew me in and what better place to contemplate your future direction in life than Bali. Sadly, however, I just did not like Jaelee - brash and rude and her insta love did not ring true for me. I just could not connect with her. She does have a solid character arc but too little too late for my liking. Therein lies my dilemma with this book.

‘Now, apparently, I have a resting bitch face. I’ve been accused of being moody, angry, annoyed, and just plain bitchy, when all I’ve been doing is nothing, simply because my default - i.e. resting - expression is ‘bitch face’.

A Sunrise over Bali definitely provides the perfect getaway where you can literally feel the sand between your toes. The camaraderie and friendships are enticing you to throw in a towel and book and catch the next plane there. I only wish I had more empathy with Jaelee but she was just too selfish for me.

‘Maybe I’m finding a way to cope with my avalanche of fuckups. If I focus on the beauty around me, on the simple pleasures of a run, or a decent coffee, or a visit from Lu - if I stop obsessing about everything that’s wrong in my life, stop complaining - I can find my way out of the mire of my own making. I can find peace. This is why, Jae - this is why Bali and not the Bahamas.’

I am going to have to DNF this one at 29%. I have been trying to get into it for over a week and I just can't. Which makes me really sad because the cover and the synopsis both hold so much promise. The main character, Jaelee, is one of the worst characters I've read. She is judgmental of others, condescending, childish, talks about her bitch mode that she goes into like she's proud of it, calls someone an idiot literally for no reason, she talks about how self conscious she is but then a few pages later is saying how hot she looks and needs to take a picture...I could go on...just know there is a lot going on with this character that is very unlikeable. I can't get into a story about her finding herself or loving herself when at almost a third of the book I can't connect with her enough to care that she grows. Also, the "romantic connection" she is forming with another character just doesn't feel believable either.

But please don't take my word for it if this book seems like one you would enjoy! The majority of readers on Goodreads are loving it! It's just not my cup of tea.

I am a solid Sandy Barker fan and have devoured all her previous books, in a flash, so to know there was a fourth coming in her travel romance series, was just fantastic.
I love how each story is individual, but that there are links and characters that tie them all together. so, yes, it could be a stand-alone, but equally, it's always fun to read books in a series, in order, to keep track of each character's story.
This book centres on Jaelee Tan.
She's a bigwig VP back in the US, and the daughter of a mother who doesn't show much emotional involvement in her life but expects big things from her only child.
After bumping into her ex at her best friend's party, and feeling her world unravel, Jaelee takes a sabbatical from work, which ends up being the catalyst for her leaving her job.
She moves to Bali to UROP, a place filled with 'digital nomads', where she hopes to ground herself.
Jae finds herself in paradise, with new friends, and ideas for a new future for her career.
As I was expecting, there was going to be romance, and it came in the form of Hot Scot, Alistair. An intense romance that gathers speed fast in this idyllic location.
But, romances are not meant to be smooth-sailing, are they?
There are exes involved, then families and their issues have to crop too...
So Jae swaps the beauty of Bali for the gloom of Scotland...
All in all, an easy, fun read, with lots of laughs, love and sizzles!

Jaelee Tan is all the things her mother wanted her to be, only, she’s miserable. So miserable that she is leaving her job and heading off on sabbatical to Bali, the magical land of introspection, for two months.

I picked up this book purely based on the cover, and it didn't disappoint. I felt the more you read of Jaelee’s story, the more you grew to care for her and empathize with her. Let's be honest, if we weren't over an ex and saw him and his new bride walk into the same party, how gracefully would we handle ourselves? I’m like Jaelee and don’t care for man buns either, but somehow (gasp) I fell for Alistair. I watched him through her eyes as he progressed from Mr Man Bun to the Hot Scot ashes called him. Jaelee and Alistar definitely have great chemistry there were some times where I felt like it was moving too slow. But as the reader you are always cheering them on to overcome the oppositions against them.

All in all, a solid 4 star read. A perfect summer beach read that has you dreaming of tropical locations and laughing.

I loved this book. It’s another “escape” romance where the characters go to find themselves, (and maybe find someone else!) in an organized setup for digital nomads. And it’s in Bali, not just any old vacation destination. The romance was well done and felt very real.

The descriptions of Bali the island , the food, and especially the scenery had me checking ticket prices. The descriptions of Scotland were great too!

From the publisher:

I loved that Jae makes new friends there and realizes how important her old and new friends are to her happiness, they’re her family. She realizes that home can be anywhere she feels loved and appreciated.

Jaylee feels like she is at a crossroads in her life. Her ex boyfriend has gotten married, she has a difficult relationship with her mother, and she needs a timeout. Her answer is heading over to Bali for a two month sabbatical. The day she arrives, her boss calls to tell her she needs her back at work immediately, and Jaylee quits her job. Now jobless, she really gets the chance to re-examine exactly what she wants out of life.

Just like herself, she meets others who are also in Bali for a two month stay, and makes friends and connections she never would have imagined. Included in those friends is a handsome Scottish man named Allistair, who she gravitates toward.

This was a wonderful read that will have you grabbing for your passport. The characters all are well rounded, with their own reasons for escaping. The backdrop of Bali is so well described that I felt like I was there along with everyone, and the relationships forged were meaningful and heart warming.

A Sunrise over Bali was an absolute joy to read with compelling characters and a fun, intriguing plot that kept be firmly in the story. Main character Jae is complicated and layered, but as the story unfolds, we get to see those layers peel away. She is vulnerable, appealing and relatable. Armchair travel—I must mention Bali! All of Sandy’s books are set in different locations, and she’s incredible at it. I was literally whisked away. A Sunrise over Bali is a must read for all fans of the genre. Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed the slow burn of this romance. It was a perfect storyline for Bali.
As an Aussie who has been to Bali many times, the airport, mad driving, food and language were spot on! I could picture myself walking out of the airport and getting into a car as Baker was writing it. Although I take cars with seatbelts, rather than the vans without (as they are plentiful and cheap).
A great setting with lovely characters.

Today I am delighted to be sharing my review for this wonderful read set in the gorgeous Bali. I love how reading books by Sandy Barker enables us to travel to such wonderful locations, this is an element that she brings to all of her books and that I love.

After the past couple of years we all need some escapism and this book is literally that on prescription. The location is gorgeous and I loved getting to know the wonderful characters and learning more about their stories especially Jaelee starts to reassess her life. I have heard of retreats for digital nomads and loved the idea of Urop and spending time there with the ability to work but also relax and take in a new culture and experiences.
As always Sandy brings her extensive travel knowledge to the table and offers the most wonderful descriptions and insights to make us feel like we are there right alongside Jaelee. A truly wonderful story and it was a pleasure to read and review.

I always enjoy Sandy Barker stories. With great characters and always a beautiful setting, she writes a wonderful romance, and A Sunrise Over Bali has hit the sweet spot again.
Bali sounded so magical- the perfect getaway from it all destination - and all of our characters needed that time away to regroup and work out what was important in their lives.
I really liked the chemistry between Jaelee and Alistair - both strong individuals, they supported eachother from the very beginning of their meeting. All of the friendships through the story were supportive and warm.

A Sunrise Over Bali is the fourth novel in the Holiday Romance series, which connects standalone stories with overlapping characters. After greatly enjoying this novel, I definitely need to get my hands on the other three, One Summer in Santorini, That Night in Paris, and A Sunset in Sydney. As some of the characters were introduced in the previous novels, I did not have any prior knowledge of them, but it was extremely easy to catch up on the dynamics. This story follows 35-years-old Jaelee Tan, who has an amazing job that’s she very qualified for with her BA in Communications and Masters in Public Relations. She currently lives in Miami and is the Junior Vice President at the second-largest PR firm in Florida. Before beginning this story, I loved that she not only has a graduate degree to add to her qualifications to have the higher power job, but she has it in her mid-30s. To me, it helped add a touch of realism to the story.

After a break-up with her boyfriend, Paco, she ends up running into him at her best friend, Ali’s birthday party. Not only did Ali forget to mention his attendance to Jaelee, but Paco is in attendance with his new wife. This causes fallout between her and Ali and Jaelee is currently not speaking to Ali. This also spurs Jaelee’s idea to take a sabbatical. She ends up booking a two-month trip to Bali where she’s staying with other digital nomads at a place called UROP (“You Are Our People”) that is a co-living space. After her arrival, Jaelee ends up receiving notice from her job that they need to rescind her sabbatical and she needs to return home. Instead of leaving, she ends up quitting. Now her time in Bali is not only to heal herself emotionally but to use it as an opportunity to figure out the next steps in her career. As a character, Jaelee was initially difficult to like as she was judgmental of people and places. She came across as self-absorbed and closed-minded at first; however, over the course of her story not only does she grow as a character, but the reasons behind some of her characters are revealed. By the end, everything came together nicely, and she was very likable and enjoyable.

At the compound, Jaelee meets Alistair, a software engineer Scots man, and the two of them have an immediate attraction to the other. While they are both willing to be together, it is not simple as Jaelee is still dealing with residual feelings for Paco and Alistair is dealing with his own break-up. Their relationship develops both at a quicker rate and also as a slow burn, which fits very well into the story. As each of them is meeting in a destination away from home and living in the same place, the timeline moves differently compared to meeting on one of their home turfs. The two of them worked together nicely and I enjoyed both of them as a potential couple. While I loved the romance, I enjoyed the friendships even more. Peta, an Australian lifestyle coach, and Helena, an American model/actress were both staying at the same place and I loved the friendship that formed between them. Each character was at a different stage in their life and I loved how they all came together to form a genuine bond.

Overall, I loved the escapism and Bali made a fantastic backdrop for the story. Bali is an incredible destination, but it is not a complete paradise, so I liked that the story did not highlight only the secluded resort side and instead showed everywhere. I have heard of digital nomads and co-living situations before, so it was amazing to see it featured in a story. If my job allowed this, I would easily pack my bags to participate. The novel is an amazing emotional journey for Jaelee as she rediscovers everything that she wants out of life. The friendships she formed were amazing and I enjoyed her relationship with Alistair. I do wish that their romance was explored a little more as it did sometimes take a backseat to the internal journey of Jaelee; however, it was an enjoyable story and I cannot wait to read more from the series!

**I give a special thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter, for the opportunity to read this entertaining novel. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**

There was so much I enjoyed about this book that I really don’t know where to start – but I’m going to begin with location. After a few years confined to our homes, I think everyone’s probably ready for some virtual travel – and where could be more aspirational (and inspirational too) than Bali? In this book, it’s so much more than a backdrop – it’s total escapism. The author’s wonderful descriptions entirely immerse you in the island paradise, and by the book’s end I really felt like I’d been on a really good holiday.

But the author uses her intimate knowledge of the island to give much more than a postcard representation. While the sunrise that gives the book its title takes your breath away (and a tear to your eye), and there’s nothing you yearn for more than to take your turn on a paddle board on the clear blue sea or to run on the isolated tracks, it doesn’t skirt away from some of the less picture-perfect detail – I never knew about the ever-present rubbish, and the way it detracts from the perfection. And I was absolutely fascinated by the whole idea of UROP – a resort catering for digital nomads, that contemporary phenomenon of people who can work anywhere with decent wifi and mobile reception (who knew?), and a lifestyle I’d really never heard of (and certainly not read about) before.

And it’s the perfect refuge for Jaelee, who needs to escape from her high-powered job in Miami for a while – and to lick her wounds after a relationship break-up she really hasn’t got over, and that feels much worse after encountering her former partner and his beautiful new wife at a friend’s birthday party. She feels betrayed, and really needs to run and hide for a while – and when the pressure of work follows her, with a demand for her to return forthwith to handle an unforeseen problem, she resigns from her job and kicks back to contemplate her uncertain future.

If you read That Night in Paris (and you really don’t have to – this book stands alone quite perfectly) you might remember Jaelee and her friendship with Cat as they travelled round Europe. In this one, they’re still in touch and it’s good to hear how life has moved on for her – but I will admit that I was slightly worried about Jaelee being the main character in this book when she really wasn’t someone I’d particularly warmed to. But I certainly engaged with her in this book, and felt for her from the very start – her first person account takes you right inside her thoughts, feeling all her fears and uncertainties, revealing her as a far more complex character than she at first might appear, and I was never anywhere but entirely in her corner.

And, as you can always expect from a book by Sandy Barker, there’s then a lovely focus on making connections and forming firm and supportive new female friendships – although Jaelee’s closeness with model-slash-actress Helena understandably does take just a little longer to develop. The whole supporting cast is wonderfully drawn, along with the relationships between them – there’s even a superbly characterful dog, the lovely Lu, initially untouchable but becoming steadily more friendly, and her appearances nicely punctuate the story. And Jaelee slowly gains a new confidence, has the unexpected opportunity to mend some trampled fences, and feels ready to set about making plans for her future.

And I haven’t even mentioned the romance yet, and it’s a major part of the story – there’s a real chemistry between her and hot Scot Alistair from the moment they first meet, some lovely exchanges, and things steadily heat up in a way I thoroughly enjoyed. But he’s every bit as complex as I like my romantic leads to be, and their mutual attraction felt both authentic and believable – but their developing relationship doesn’t progress as smoothly as you might expect or hope for, complicated by secrets that emerge and the intrusion of family issues. And the story does takes an unexpected turn for a while, away from Bali and into a situation that might cement or irretrievably damage their relationship – and it was a diversion I really enjoyed.

This is a book that certainly has all the lightness and touches of humour that I always enjoy about the author’s writing, but there’s also a real depth of emotion that I found particularly satisfying. And it’s a great story – it certainly kept me entirely hooked, hoping that Jaelee would have the happy ending she deserved. Beautifully done, as always – and a book I’d thoroughly recommend.

I’ve read one of Sandy Barker’s novels before and loved it so I knew I had to read this one! It was such a cute holiday romance, and made me want to immediately take a trip to Bali!

After running into her ex and his new wife at her best friends party, Jaelee books a flight to Bali intending on staying for two months. Feeling betrayed by her friend, and shocked that she still isn’t over her ex, she fully intends to make the most of this sabbatical. Jaelee is an overachiever and has a very high up job in PR, but something is lacking in her life. On her first day in Bali, her boss calls and tells her she is needed back in the office. In a whirlwind, Jaelee quits her job and decides to focus on her self and her priorities.

This wasn’t just a romance, there was a lot of soul searching in this book, as Jaelee discovers who she is and what she wants to do with the rest of her life. Her accommodation in Bali is a communal hostel-type area for digital nomads. This gives her many opportunities to connect with people in a similar field to her. Throughout this book she rediscovers her love for her job and working with people and companies to make their dream happen. Jaelee has never been good at expressing her feelings, which she gets from her mother. She has never told anyone she loves them, including her parents and friends. Whilst in Bali, she works on herself and tries to bring up the courage to truly express her feelings.

‘For who he is, for how he sees me, and for the future that seems all the brighter because I know, without a doubt, that he will be in it.’

The love interest in this book was a gorgeous Scots man, Alistair. After their first meeting, they quickly realise they’re both attracted to each other. However, their romance isn’t as straightforward as it first seems. Alistair recently broke up with his long-term girlfriend and Jae and Ali keep forgetting to have the talk about what they are. This wasn’t a slow burn romance, but it was slow for the characters to figure out what they were to each other. The scenes between these two were cute and I found myself wanting more.

Jaelee makes some important friendships throughout this book, and each new person teaches her something different about herself and encourages her to be better. I enjoyed this romance and will definitely be reading more of Sandy Barker’s books.
